Whitby Man's Body Located in Rutter Lake

Bracebridge OPP were called to the Fish Hatchery Road area of Muskoka Lakes Township yesterday where a man was reported missing after a kayaking incident. Officers were notified around 5:00pm that the man had become separated from his kayak in Rutter Lake and could not be located. Officers searched the waterway and surrounding forest but did not find any trace of him. Today, the OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) was called in to conduct a search of the lake. Just before noon, divers located the man. Twenty-year-old Douglas James Vickery of Whitby was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. Police are still investigating the factors that led up to his death.

Fundraiser Will Shut Down City Streets

Drivers are reminded about the hospital foundation fundraising event on Sunday that will shut down city streets for one hour. The closures include Bay Street starting at the Stockey Centre, James Street south to Seguin Street, and Seguin Street from James Street to the intersection at Great North Road and River Street. The streets will be closed from 8:30am until 9:30am. The Georgian Bay Biosphere Walk, Run, and Pole event supports the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation.

Firefighter Injured by Falling Tree

A Lake of Bays firefighter has been injured while fighting a bush fire on Walkers Lake. He suffered lower back injuries when a tree fell on him yesterday and he was kept in hospital overnight for observation. The fire is now out and is believed to have been caused by an unattended camp fire. Huntsville Fire Chief Steve Hernen reminds everyone that there is a total fire ban still in place for all of Muskoka and it will remain until further notice.

Defeat Depression Day

It's a chance to raise awareness for and defeat the stigma towards mental illness and depression. Muskoka Parry Sound Community Mental Health Services is hosting Defeat Depression, a two or five kilometre walk, run pole or roll on Sunday. Brent Baker says they want people to talk about mental illness openly. The event is happening in Parry Sound, Huntsville, and Bracebridge. Parry Sound and area is now among most of the rest of Northeastern Ontario and under a fire ban. Because of the recent warm, dry weather, the West Parry Sound Fire District, including Magnetawan, declared the fire danger rating "Extreme". An extreme rating means NO OPEN BURNING and camp fires are not allowed, except for those in organized commercial campgrounds or Provincial Parks. In addition, the Municipality of Whitestone has enacted a complete fire ban, meaning ALL open air burning is prohibited.

Government Gives Belvedere Heights $50,000 Towards Veterans Memorial

Belvedere Heights is getting $50,000 to help build a war memorial from the federal government. Parry Sound-Muskoka MP Tony Clement made the announcement yesterday on behalf of Minister of Veterans Affairs, Steven Blaney. Clement says they have the National Remembrance Day service in Ottawa, but the reason for the funding is because it's really about the local level.

The new cenotaph will be located in a well-landscaped garden area as part of a large park development project, which will include a Veterans memorial walkway around the perimeter of the park.

Social Media Presentation to Cover Dangers of "Sexting"

A social media expert is coming to Parry Sound High School to talk to students and parents about internet safety. Jesse Miller is a national speaker who has addressed thousands of people about social media awareness. Miller worked for the Vancouver police force for 5 years, and has a solid understanding, interest, and knowledge surrounding the challenges in our schools today, including the distribution of explicit photos amongst students. He will speak to students on Monday morning in two separate presentations, then on Monday night beginning at 7pm, he will give a presentation that is open to parents and other members of the community.

Skipping Team and Two Individuals Heading to Worlds

It was a successful trip to Nationals for our skipping team. The Georgian Jumpers were in Moncton, New Brunswick over the holiday weekend where they competed against the best rope jumpers in the country at the Canadian Jump Rope Championships. Out of the three teams that represented the Parry Sound area, the two mixed teams finished 4th and 5th, while the senior team, Starstruck, finished second which qualifies them for the FISAC world championship being held in Tampa Bay, Florida in August. Four out of the six individual competitors finished in the top 4 overall with Jocelyn and Meghan qualifying to compete in their individual events at Worlds. The team is back training for an Open World Camp and Competition in Washington DC at the beginning of July.

CAA North & East Ontario's Annual Great Battery Roundup Starts this Week. Starting tomorrow and continuing until Saturday, June 2, the campaign provides pick-up service and drop-off locations for old automotive and marine batteries in several municipalities throughout North & East Ontario including Parry Sound. In addition to safely recycling your derelict automotive and marine batteries, for every used battery that CAANEO collects, the Club will make a donation to an environmentally-friendly organization or event. Here in Parry Sound, old batteries can be dropped off at Constable Auto Body and Towing on Hoddy Side Road during regular business hours.

Local Volunteers Recognized in Huntsville

It was a ceremony to recognize a combined 14-hundred years of volunteer service. The Huntsville Volunteer Service Awards was held at the Algonquin Theatre last night. The ceremony recognized volunteers who have served for five to 60 or more years from the Muskoka, Parry Sound and Almaguin Highlands districts. Sixteen men and women from Parry Sound were honoured along with numerous others from around the Parry Sound district.
