Moose Jaw Cultural Centre presents Tenore: Christmas with You: Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. The multiple award-winning tenor trio sings hymns, gospel and contemporary Christian music. They are auditioning for the TV show America’s Got Talent this December. Music and Dance!: Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The Regina Symphony Orchestra and the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre present Music & Dance, a concert where the RSO Chamber Players and members of Youth Ballet and Contemporary Dance of Saskatchewan perform together. Attention students and teachers!

With the SaskTel Youth Tour, Persephone Theatre of Saskatoon brings two plays for elementary and high school students to the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre on Wed., March 11, 2015.

Head à Tête, for Kindergarten to Grade 6, is at 9:30 a.m. This production is suitable for students in French and English immersion classes.
Here's the plot: Two strangers, one English and one French-speaking, meet on a barren landscape and do not understand the other’s language. This charming and insightful play uses physical language to explore how friendships can grow despite differences. Head à Tête will appeal to young audiences of all ages and will be especially appreciated by students who are learning to speak English or French as a second language.

The Stones, for Grades 7 to 12, is at 1:15 p.m.
Here's the plot: “How do you judge someone’s actions and what should the consequences be?” This thought provoking play about responsibility and choices incorporates live music and heightened theatricality to tell the true story of two teenage boys who dropped stones from a highway overpass, killing a passing motorist. Two versatile actors will take on the roles of the boys and the investigating detectives as they move through the Canadian Youth Justice System.

The cast of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre

The Moose Jaw Cultural Centre (MJCC) is proud to announce the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk, its 2014 pantomime production. It’s MJCC’s fourth annual pantomime, or panto for short. The audience is invited to interact with the cast by doing such things as cheering the hero or booing the villain. Laugh and sing, scream and shout with the hilarious comedy and terrific music!

Five of the core cast members have been in other MJCC pantos, with two coming on board for the first time. Three are currently or originally from Moose Jaw, and three others are currently from Regina or Saskatoon.

Here’s the cast:

Daniel Falk, originally from Moose Jaw, has been in all three of MJCC’s pantos. This year, in Jack and the Beanstalk, Dan plays Jack Trot. He was Prince Charming in Cinderella (2011), Aladdin in Aladdin (2012), and Prince Michael in Snow White(2013). Daniel now lives in Toronto, where he works as an actor and writer.

Stella Salido Porter of Moose Jaw returns to the MJCC panto this year as Princess Jill, after playing Princess Jasmine in the 2012 production of Aladdin. Stella currently resides in Moose Jaw and teaches and coaches voice and conducts vocal workshops.

Kevin Power of Saskatoon returns as the MJCC panto villain. For Jack and the Beanstalk, he plays Fleshcreep, following in the steps of Abanazer in Aladdin(2012) and The Red Queen in Snow White (2013). Kevin has appeared in lead roles in Tony Award-winning musicals, and can be seen in several principal roles in movies and television.

Andy Trithardt, originally from Moose Jaw, returns to take the role of Silly Billy in Jack and the Beanstalk after appearing as Muddles in last year’s Snow White. Andy is based in Toronto where he works as an actor and sound designer.

Brad McDougall of Regina takes the role of Dame Beyonce Trot in Jack and the Beanstalk. He played Baron Hardup in Cinderella (2012) and Widow Twankey in Aladdin (2012). Brad has acted in several Regina Little Theatre productions.

Ken Spencer of Regina joins the MJCC panto for the first time as Ethelfred the Unsteady. Ken has been active in Regina’s community theatre scene for 25 years as an actor and director.

Sarah Sheps of Toronto also joins the MJCC panto for the first time as Fairy Sweetpea. She is not a stranger to Moose Jaw Cultural Centre, however, having performed there with travelling shows such as The Big Comfy Couch Live, Strawberry Shortcake, and Max and Ruby. Sarah now works full time as a casting director in Toronto.

Trudy Moffatt of Toronto returns to direct Jack and the Beanstalk after directing MJCC's last three pantos.Trudy is an experienced theatre director.

The Doris Sitter School of Dance has appeared in all three of MJCC’s pantos, and returns again for Jack and the Beanstalk.

Culture Days: Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Moose Jaw Cultural Centre is participating in the national Culture Days with an activity called “Painting a clay mosaic” in a second-floor studio. Help Moose Jaw ceramic artist Rob Froese with his latest art project! Paint a few of the clay “teardrops” that will be fit together for a colourful mosaic that will later be placed on a wall of the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre. This is a drop-in event. Admission is free.

The Moose Jaw Cultural Centre is 10 years old this year, and there will be a birthday celebration with an amazing show in the Mae Wilson Theatre on Sept. 6, 2014, at 8 p.m.

The show will feature singer-songwriter Jeffery Straker, who will be releasing his CD, "Jeffery Straker: Live with the CBC" which was recorded in the Mae Wilson Theatre in 2012. Joining him on stage as special guests throughout the show will be guitarist and songwriter Jack Semple, singer-songwriter Megan Nash, and fiddler Scott Benson.

1 – 2 p.m., Mae Wilson Theatre: Pride flag raising ceremony. The flag-raising ceremony will have a variety of guest speakers including politicians, educators, youth and other community representatives.

2 – 2:30 p.m., Mae Wilson Theatre: Readings of excerpts from the play The Laramie Project by local community members. The Laramie Project, by Moises Kaufman, deals with the tragic murder of Matthew Shephard, a young gay man living in Laramie, Wyoming. Please note: Some excerpts contain descriptions of violence.

2:30 – 4:30 p.m., main lobby: Better Together Community Fair. Find out about different organizations that support or provide services about gender and sexual diversity in the Moose Jaw-Regina area. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Persephone Theatre returns to the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre with two plays for local students

Persephone Theatre of Saskatoon is bringing two thought-provoking plays on the topic of mental health to the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre on March 20. The plays will be presented to students in kindergarten to Grade 12.

“The 2013 SaskTel Youth Tour played to rave reviews from teachers and students around the province and the 2014 line-up is even better. This year’s tour provides two excellent, entertaining and thought provoking productions that address head-on the topic of mental health and the stigmatization that surrounds it,” the Persphone Theatre website states.

“These two plays respectfully and artfully navigate through the topic of mental health and provide an excellent springboard to engage in meaningful conversation about the impact it can have on those we care about."

On March 20, Edward the “Crazy Man”for kindergarten to Grade 8 will be presented at 9:30 a.m.

Beyond the Cuckoo’s Nest for Grades 7 to 12 will be presented at 1:15 p.m.

Teachers of students in Grades 7 and 8 have a choice between the two plays, as both are appropriate for students in those grades.

Both plays support Saskatchewan Arts Education Curriculum and English Language Arts aims.

Admission to the plays is $5 per person - students and teachers.

Edward the Crazy Man by Emil Sher, for kindergarten to Grade 8, is a humorous and touching story of a special friendship between Charlie, a 12-year-old-boy and his incredible will to help his homeless friend, Edward the “Crazy Man”. The play challenges our perceptions of mental illness by addressing prejudice, discrimination, homelessness and difference. This production is an excellent vehicle to nurture empathy, understanding and a compassionate view of the homeless.

Beyond the Cuckoo’s Nest by Edward Roy, for Grades 7 to 12, is a frank, real and honest portrayal of Patricia, Jude and Trey, three teens who have been newly diagnosed with mental health issues. Meeting regularly at an early intervention clinic for teenagers to deal with the realities and stigmatization of their newly-diagnosed illnesses, they discover and explore the impact they have as the characters navigate through their immediate world of dating, relationships and school workload.

Steven Palmer of Moose Jaw is holding a CD release party concert for his latest CD, "Prairie Airs" in the Mae Wilson Theatre at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre on Feb. 22, 2014 at 7:30 p.m.

Get ready for an evening of warmth, humour, and toe-tapping country favourites! Palmer, a folk music singer-songwriter from Moose Jaw, will perform songs from Prairie Airs.

The new album is as sweeping as the Prairies itself, honouring the country roots legacy of Canadian superstars Stompin’ Tom Connors and Gordon Lightfoot and the gospel roots of the Carter Family and Merle Travis.

At the concert, Steven will be joined by special guests Sister Reign, a young duo of two sisters from Minnedosa, Man., and keyboard wizard Kelly Sapergia of Moose Jaw.

Want to work with clay?

Here's your chance: Take the clay hand-building workshop at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre, taking place over two Saturday afternoons: March 15 and 22, 2014, from 1 to 4 p.m. each day.
(Note: This is a new workshop that opened up after a workshop scheduled on March 1 and 8 filled up so quickly another was required.)

The workshop is for all skill levels, including ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS. It is suitable for ages 16 and up.

The workshop is facilitated by Rob Froese, a ceramic artist who has worked and exhibited in Canada and Japan (read more about Rob on his website at http://www.robfroese.com). The workshop will cover tile making, slab dish making and carving in clay.

The cost is $126 ($120 plus $6 GST), which includes materials and a finished piece you make.

Advance registration and fee payment is required for the workshop. The registration deadline is March 13, 2014, but the sooner you register, the better - there is a workshop limit of 12 people.
