If you live in the United States, you wouldn't just be looking for cowgirl boots at BootCity.com, but you may have SPAM included in your everyday breakfast list, as it is after all common there. But here in the Philippines, unless you are well to do, you will not have SPAM on a regular basis. You may not have SPAM even on a monthly basis. Technically, you will find SPAM at the imported section of the grocery. And if you are running your household on a tight budget, you will not have SPAM in your grocery list.

After TS Sendong hit our city, we were running on a really tight budget. With our house and vehicles up for repairs and clean up, we knew that expenses are gonna be bumpy. Plus expenses for other things will surely arise. It was a depressing scenario but we managed to smile when my father, out of humor, brought home this Hormel SPAM Oven Roasted Turkey. A day after that, it was cooked and served during breakfast. That particular day, we were about to start cleaning up again after the Christmas holiday. That afternoon that he bought the Hormel SPAM Oven Roasted Turkey, was actually the afternoon he received his differential from his retirement fund. We asked him why he bought such a pricey canned good, and he said that with all the canned goods we have been receiving, we must at least have something that will make us want more out of life. I couldn't quite figure out what he meant, but it was like, after Sendong hit you and you have been spared, been given canned goods that actually have the same labels, you must have one that must be unique to keep you wanting for more out of life. If I am to put that in simple words, it would be "a canned good for inspiration" with a twist of my father's humor. I guess that is quite understandable...

So yeah, after that SPAM was devoured, my sister told me that we should be able to stand up after the storm that passed. Otherwise, we may not have another chance to eat SPAM again, lol.. Kidding aside, I think it worked.

Anyway, if you wanna know more about Hormel SPAM you can find data here.

Another type of fish that we have been buying since the TS Sendong devastation is this Pangasius Fillet imported from Vietnam. We have plenty of them at our local supermarket. And that is quite a blessing.

This white fish meat is actually very popular everywhere in the world, not only for its tasty meat, but also because of its cheaper price. And what's really good about this fish fillet is that, it is boneless, so no hassle for the cook or for the eater, lol.

How we cooked the Pangasius Fillet comes in a variety of recipes. Here are two ways we cooked the Pangasius Fillet. This one below was just sauteed with a little garlic, onions, some chili peppers and other spices.

There's the breaded fillet which we pan fried..

Of course, there are many other recipes for this kind of fish. One very good ingredient if you prefer light meals, or if you wish to substitute meat in a meat recipe. If you have a recipe to share, do leave them as a comment here, as I am very much interested to know how you cook Basa fillet or Pangasius Fillet.

After TS Sendong has devastated our city, we have not been able to eat fish because we were afraid of buying fish. Let alone, what we could see in its belly... But then, one day, we just couldn't take eating pork, chicken and beef alternate with the canned goods that we have plenty of. So one time, we decided to buy Century Bangus Belly. It's quite pricey if you compare it with the fresh Bangus that our supplier always sell to us. But even our supplier have temporarily stopped her fish business after TS Sendong passed through...

Well, here's what we did with the Bangus Belly. Some soup minus the vegetables to go with it.. We didn't have any vegetable to go with the soup. Some cabbage or Petchay would have been perfect. You could say it's a poor man's Bangus Belly Soup, since it lacked some of the ingredients, lol..

Anyhow, it was still a pretty good soup.. We just love how Bangus Belly is when cooked this way. Other recipe would call for steamed Bangus Belly, or Baked Bangus Belly. Well, maybe next time. So far, after Sendong, we have only been able to buy frozen and prepacked fish. I so miss the fresh ones--- Well, it's better that nothing at all. On a lighter note, do you know that when i looked for wind spinners online, all I have been seeing are milk-fishes hanging by threads of different colors? Am I hallucinating or just day dreaming? hahaha...

Here's one treat that I think I have already posted about in the previous posts. I am posting this again because this one is quite different from the previous treat I tasted..

Last week, my mom came home with this yummy treat from her office mate. This is a huge special dodol. Special indeed because this is not too sweet or too oily. The taste is quite different from previous dodols I have tasted.

Dodol is actually a treat more common among our brothers and sisters of Islamic faith here in Mindanao. At least the kind that I am featuring here on this blog. It's a sweet treat they serve during celebrations customary to their faith. Of course, when it is served, it shall be placed in grandiose dishes befitting the occasion. The taste and texture is quite similar to a hardened Calamay, the treat that Bohol is famous for. But if you go to Cebu, a certain place there serves Calamay that is hardened, much like the dodol.. So in a way, Dodol and Calamay are quite similar.

Anyhow, if you search about Dodol online, you will learn that there are many different kinds of Dodol.

My daughter and brother had been asking me for pizza and ice cream since Sunday, but we didn't have time to buy some, so last Tuesday, we ordered from Alberto's Pizza two kinds of pizza and pint of ice cream too. I would not have been able to buy some or order, if Alberto's staff didn't call me to inform that I am only two points away from my free pizza.

The ice cream had always been our favorite since we first tasted it...

The Alberto's Pizza varieties comprised of All Sausage Pizza and All Pepperoni.

Ice cream in rich chocolaty goodness, combined with spicy pizza was a knock out! We all loved the said food combination.. If you ask my daughter to choose between this food combo and a set of personalized bracelets, she will definitely give you a yummy answer..

Sorry I was not able to update right away. I had been busy. Anyway, here's one update that will surely leave you craving for bananas and all other recipes with banana as the main ingredient.

But let's just focus on what my sister made from the bananas that my cousin gave us.. It's Banana Bread--- though some call it, Banana Cake.

In the course of baking, my sister was able to bake 8 of these babies.. The bananas given to us were actually export quality Dole Bananas, and my golly! There were too many of them. We were told that it will take a month before they can be eaten but 3 weeks after, they were ready. So much bananas and so few of us to eat all of them, so we ended up giving most of them away.. Some of the baked goodies too were given away to friends and family.. That's what I call, sharing blessings.. perhaps next time it will be Golden Eagle gold bullion that we shall share.. That is when luck falls in place after the Chinese New Year. Well, we'll see.

Christmas eve and New Year's eve came and gone. It's officially year 2012. The year-ender was quite devastating, yet we continue to hope for a better new year ahead. During Christmas, we tried so hard to be happy and thankful that none of my family members died, but knowing that we have friends and neighbors who lost family members, we were devastated as well. It was not the same Christmas celebration compared with those of the previous years. We may have cooked and prepared food, but we didn't have a table to place all of them on, as well as the zest to be merry. So yeah, we had a thankful celebration, but not a merry one. Come to think of it, it was more like a rest day for all of us who had to clean up and wash clothes after the storm. And funny, even now that 2012 has arrived, we are still not done. On the lighter note, we did enjoy the food, for when we got hungry, we had food to eat.

Earlier in the day, prior to New Year preparations, CDO Bloggers distributed Media Noche treats in Barangay Pita, Kauswagan, in Macanhan and in Balulang. And I could say that my family, although a survivor as well, are way better than their current condition.

We didn't have to chase cars of people giving relief goods, or race with each other to have more...

We didn't have to sleep in the cold pavement in the night, and stay there in the heat of the mid morning, high noon and afternoon..

We had food, though not as grand as the previous New Years.. No Lechon, no table.. no house of our own... But we had the following...
And fruits... It's not exactly like the previous years where we have a complete assortment of Christmas fruits, but they're good enough.. We have each other, and that's all that matters, right? But with no table, we also didn't have any family photo for 2012.. Somehow, we slept through the New Year, except for the short time watching fireworks outside.. Not quite a happy new year, but it was all okay.. Hopes are high, though spirits are low..

Well, from my family to yours, from TS Sendong survivors to the world, Happy New Year... a blessed one for all of us..

My group and I, the CDO Bloggers Inc went around Barangay Pita, Kauswagan, in Macanhan and in Balulang to give Tropical Storm Sendong survivors some Media Noche items. This morning, we cooked Biko and prepared the Media Noche loot as well before distributing them in the afternoon.

That's Venus and Rob mixing the biko with the sugar syrup...

This Biko is supposedly yummy, because it is especially made with buko in it...

And "lunok" on top..

They were placed in disposable or reusable containers and when we gave them to the surviors, some of them could not wait to eat the Biko for they have not had lunch or breakfast yet...

Apart from Biko, we also gave Bihon ingredients, a large loaf of bread and a 1.5 bottle of softdrink..

There were actually two bags that each family received, one from the in-kind donations of Iloilo Bloggers Inc. and of course, the other would be from the Paypal donors and sponsors...

I hope, with the goodies we gave, TS Sendong survivors had a good media noche as they welcomed the New Year 2012...

Thirteen days have passed since Sendong's wrath immobilized the city and mobilized help from all over the world. It is actually a good thing that there are many organizations giving help and more and more donors sending help in cash and in kind.

Above is a truck filled with relief goods that people in Macanhan have received. and below is the truck filled with drinking water.. Sorry about the date on the images, my camera was set to have a date on, but I was not able to key in the correct date.. will edit in a while..

While some areas help come and go, there are other areas where help is nowhere near.. I pity them who have nothing to eat anymore as they can not leave their place..

Cagayan de Oro is slowly rising, and its people are helping hand in hand in the efforts to rebuild the city. Engineers, health workers and and even doctors, those who work as a Dietician or Nutritionist Jobs handled, are working for the people's recovery. That is indeed a good thing. And I saw how people, even with their differences, continue to work to help the victims of the flash flood.

While others continue to distribute relief goods, others also undergo workshops and training for the psycho-social debriefing of the victims. I hope one day, everything will be in place, that all victims shall be able to move into new homes, and move forward for a better tomorrow.

Shop at More Food Adventures

We have received so many packs of noodles, along with grocery items and all others, from friends who extended help after they learned that my family is one of Tropical Storm Sendong's victims. Here is what I did to make the food more healthy and nutritious. A hearty breakfast before we did our chores...

Here is the recipe:

3 portions of Chicken, sliced and seasoned

1 bulb onion, diced

garlic

Baguio beans, sliced

Sauteed the chicken, onions and garlic, added water and allowed it to boil. Added the noodles. and the Baguio beans, plus the flavoring. Voila! A hearty noodle soup that is yummy and nutritious...

In the afternoon, we cooked Spaghetti, but didn't have the proper dish to serve it, so it's simply placed in the pot where the pasta was cooked.

My aunt cooked Chicken Kaldereta minus some of the ingredients... and had to stay in the carajay since we didn't have the proper dish to serve it too...

As for our Christmas dinner, we simply ordered Super Family Premium All Meat Tuscani pizza from Pizza Hut and got a second one, Family sized Bacon and Ham Pizza for free courtesy of my Palm Card.

And bought Jelly Roll and Mocha cake from Kathryn's, as there were already no more cakes available at Red Ribbon and Goldilocks.

Brother's girlfriend's aunt sent us yummy cupcakes and my aunt who was also a Sendong survivor sent yummy Kutchinta with cheese...

Seems that the Mocha cake was the first to go, lol.. Thanks to that lady who kept pushing me, I was given the order first instead of her. Hahaha...

Well, Merry Christmas everyone.. it may not be as merry as the previous years, but it was blessed all the same..

Yesterday we went to SM for so many reasons. First, I needed to renew my SM Advantage Card which I always use at Save More Capistrano when buying groceries. Second, we had to look for Lili's costume for their Christmas program tonight, plus all other accessories. I also opted to buy a new camera so I would have a remembrance for my money in December. Not the expensive kind, but the one within a budget I have in mind. But that happened after our dinner. We were famished after looking for and buying the costumes and the gifts for Lili's Christmas party come Monday..

So first, we ordered Mozzarella Sticks. We do not like them that much, but Lili and River loved them, so the order..

We actually ordered the P 198 fair which is good for two and we had two soups namely Cream of Mushroom and Cream of Chicken, and the latter has always been my favorite... With that came the garlic bread, and two pastas plus drinks of course.. We opted for two Spaghetti Bolognese. But the one above we had asked the waiter to change because there was a long strand of hair atop the baked sauce...

We also ordered the new Pizza Hut Tuscani Super Family size pizza in the Premium All Meat flavor. Since I have my Palm Card, I got the Bacon and Pepperoni pizza above, also in Family size for free...

But then, look, they are not actually the same size, lol.. Pizza Hut Tuscani Super Family size is a lot bigger, and of course it's thin crust with full flavor so it's yummier... But hey, we took the free pizza as it is free, lol..

The Spaghetti Bolognese arrived and didn't look the same.. I jokingly asked the waiter if they simply scraped the baked sauce from the one we had taken away earlier during the course of our dinner, and he said that the one that was not baked was rushed so they can have them both at our table in no time..

Given the benefit of a doubt, we believed him, but in my mind I was still wondering even after we arrived home with two boxes of take home Pizza, and two containers of Spaghetti.. In short, we didn't finish all our orders there since there were just four of us, and the two are just kids. So this morning, we heated them and we've been burpin Pizza and Pazta, lol.. Even when we had liempo and rice for lunch, we still couldn't stop burpin pizza, lol...

A week ago my daughter and I had lunch at Pizza Hut in Gaisano Mall. After lunch, we passed by Mister Donut kiosk and bought their Christmas sweets.. They are actually Mister Donut's Belgian Bites encased in holiday tin cans.

This one is in the shape of a huge candy cane with seven pieces Mister Donut Belgian Bites for P 150 only.

I actually like this one as I will use the tin can for something come Christmas day.. I love the idea of putting chocolates and candies in them.

The other tin can is in the shape of a miniature Christmas tree with 9 pieces Mister Donut Belgian Bites. This is prized at P 160 only.

I think this is also good for putting in candies and other sweet stuff during the holidays..

We always liked Tita Fannies Liempo de Lechon, whenever we eat at Tita Fannies. Now that they have opened shop here in Macasandig, I find it much better that we can satisfy our Tita Fannies Liempo de Lechon cravings as easily and as near than before.

Bought one sometime ago and I was really glad that I was the first costumer for the afternoon. I was able to get photos of how Tita Fannies Liempo de Lechon is cut/served for takeout...

The removal of the string. The string actually holds the meat together so that the spices and herbs won't fall off while it is cooked on the roaster.

So there, I saw what makes Tita Fannies Liempo de Lechon flavorful.. Then the chopping into bite sizes.. I checked and the chopping board was clean before the attendant started doing his routine..

Technically, the chopped Tita Fannies Liempo de Lechon then will be served in their serving plates, if one is to dine in at the shop in Corrales, but since my order at Macasandig Branch was for take out, the chopped meat was placed in a foil, impeccably wrapped and placed inside their take out bags..

The taste of Tita Fannies Liempo de Lechon is good. Better than your everyday liempo as it has flavors of the herbs and spices that were placed in between. It is also synonymous to lechon thus the name, but it is much better than lechon...Oh, and if you have problems, Tita Fannies Liempo de Lechon is comfort food, especially on days when auto collision estimating software is what you have been looking into from breakfast to lunch till dinnertime, lol.. What could cheer you up after knowing that you have so much to pay and so much to spend to make your vehicle look like new..

We have just visited Cadayunan Primary School, and we are going back there for more help and gifts we can give, with the support of all our sponsors. Tough job being a teacher in the hinterlands. The school have just opened last July and they are not equipped with the necessary materials as well as a decent classroom. But I swear, the teachers have done quite well with the make shift classroom. I commend their skills and talents for that. Now I wonder why not all applicants for a teaching career are good enough for the job. Some prove themselves to have chosen the profession as their last recourse to find means to survive. Which is quite sad because I see lots of teachers, especially in the public schools, who lack compassion for their students. Some even use their students for more income, like selling snacks and food stuff inside the classroom, and the students are the prime consumers who buy for fear of a low grade. Perhaps in some schools it does not happen, but I know a school where this is rampant. And the more I fee sad about it. Surely, choosing a career is choosing one's vocation. I do believe that one's job is his calling and he or she can only perform well in it if he or she has the passion to excel on the job, and compassion for the job's direct client, in a teacher's case, the students.

Anyway, I am so reminded of my experience in a previous place of work where I was the GCPO, or the Guidance, Career Placement and Promotions Officer of this said school. I think it was quite a miracle that I have loved the job as much as the people I come across with. Perhaps it's because I had really supportive direct bosses, the school director and of course, the VP for Marketing. They believed in me and my ideas, so I loved doing more for the school. When we conducted a survey among our students as well as the graduating students of the schools we visited for Career Orientation, my work was made simplier as the data helped us a lot in our marketing plans to get more students to enroll. Of course, being the guidance counselor at the same time, I had to hit two points, that the students are also guided as to the right career choice parallel to their skills, talents, abilities and inclinations aside from an added number to the enrollee's list. I am sure that if there was ever a Survey Software available at that time, it would have gone faster than how it went. We wanted to develop an Online Survey where students can just visit our website and participate in the survey, but some schools, especially in the far flung areas, do not even have electricity. So if one becomes a teacher there, he or she must have initiative to cater to the needs of the time and location. But then again, as I mentioned earlier, some teachers just go after their salaries without ever trying to help the situation before their very eyes.

My sentiment is that, the educational system should be geared towards building a more educated country by having talented, multi-skilled teachers who are willing to go the extra mile to foster a good educational environment. I am sure the worst teachers in the country never really liked education to begin with, but feel they have no choice but to embrace their bread and butter for the time being. When and if they are given the chance, they will move away for greener pastures and a brighter future for them. I guess, before a teacher is even accepted as an applicant, a survey must first be done in order to know if the applicant will be good or bad at the job. Surveys open windows somehow, and looking through said windows will let administrators know the possibilities. Unless the administrator is downright naive of the needs of the school and its studentry..

Thinking about these things frustrate me all the more, whew! I better have a Belgian Bite instead..

If you have been living in Europe for quite some time, you have probably been using all of your vacation time to visit famous cities, to go sightseeing and to view historical locations. Maybe you want to travel more, but you do not know where to go next or what you would do when you got there.

All of this time, you have been traveling to see and experience new things. Perhaps what you need is to start traveling to experience new things with a different sense, meaning your taste buds. Food tasting road trips can be an absolute blast and planning them is half the fun. You'll visit new places, taste amazing food and sip fantastic wines. For even more fun, keep an online log of all of the places you have been and rate restaurants for your friends. Try to find a car with good gas mileage, like a used ford, so that you can go farther for cheaper and be sure to add these top five European food destinations to your must-taste list.

1. The most obvious location to make it on the list is probably Paris, France. Yes, you have probably visited Paris a dozen times. Paris is rich with history, beauty, culture, shopping and incredible music. But it also has incredible food. Restaurants in Paris have a wide price range, so you do not have to make reservations at the fanciest restaurants in order to get a good meal. In Paris, seemingly everyone cooks amazing food, so you will probably enjoy yourself at any restaurant that you happen to walk into.

2. If you love seafood, you should definitely head to Barcelona, Spain. Barcelona is known for its fish dishes. We didn't know that there was a sale going on, so ultimately, we saved a lot. Though we didn't finish the huge pack at one time, we managed to finish the two packs in two weeks. We are not really big on junk food, but when we watch a movie or do something fun, we gobble a few. Thus it always pays to have some at home. Now, if I buy gold bars, and they come in the same way, 2 for the price of 1, I am sure I'd be millionaire in no time as I will be buying lots of them, lol..

My daughter and I always go for cakes, cupcakes, breads, cookies, bars, and everything else that's sinfully addicting. But it bears a much heavier load on me because daughter seems to like the idea of seeing cakes, cupcakes, breads, cookies, bars, and everything dandy, but would only taste some and leave everything for me to finish-- hahaha.. Of course, if she likes something, she will finish her share. I have seen her eyes twinkle with a really colorful and yummy treat. To a six year old, anything colorful is indeed good looking. But once the taste is bad, it's a goner.

Anyway, I showed Lili the ticket for the Dessert All You Can, an event on December 3, 2011 where the abundance of cakes, cupcakes, breads, cookies, bars, coffee, tea, juice shall grace thy presence. And she asked if her favorite desserts shall be served. Since it's Dessert All You Can, anything is possible, that's what I told her. Oh, and I showed her the cakes that Monster Kitchen’s Fundamentals in Baking and Pastry Arts Batch03 have made. They are after all the people who shall prepare the desserts for this event. It shall be held at Thai Me Up Restaurant on Capistrano-Mabini Sts. If you guys are also looking into desserts, be there from 2:30-7:00pm, and buy your tickets before you plunge in, it's just P 250 for the indulgence of a lifetime..

Oh and, do not be conscious of the security cameras, your every bite won't be recorded thereat, lol..

My sister introduced a new junkfood-- hahaha.. It's actually the chicharon for junkfood eaters. Not that Chicharon itself is a good food to be precise, but just imagine, pork fat being squeezed from the fat itself-- grease or not, it's still fat and well, too much is unhealthy. But for food lovers like me, chicharon is okay, for as long as you get the kind from SLERS, or those from Monterey Tomas Saco (not a paid post okay, lol..), and NOT too much in just one sitting. Betteryet, share it! Company always delights in food--- agree?

Anyway, Baked Porky Popps is actually good for my tastebuds. I specially like the one in red packet. And it's also affordable. You can buy it from groceries everywhere. When we bought all four packets, I thought that the Retail POS System at the grocery was broken that it showed a very small amount, but then we realized it was really that affordable.

That's what I bought yesterday while shopping at SaveMore. For some reason, it was guided by the urge to earn 20 points for my SM Advantage card. Ha! Now, I am rather confused as I cannot think of many chicken recipes for Chicken Thigh. Last night however, when we arrived home, my instinct told me that I should boil them, and later baked a few pieces with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and some garlic.
Anyway, I still have a few pieces soaked in chicken broth, and perhaps I will do some more this week. In the mean time, I better think of the next recipe so food here in the house won't be a bore. Perhaps I should use the chicken thigh in my next pasta recipe, or cook them with lots of tomatoes. Seriously, as much as I wanna make everything exciting, I just lack time to do all the work..

I love fruits. And I love Mangoes most of all. I can name so many Mango recipes and mango products, and never tire eating them, even on a daily basis. That's the reason why my friend Julie told me to try african mango. It's actually a slimmimg product that is from the fruit of the Irvingia tree. Or what is known as wild mangoes or African Mangoes.

Unlike our usual mangoes, African Mangoes are said to burn fat, suppress appetite, and best of all, control the obesity hormone Leptin...it also decreases the bad cholesterol levels and regulates digestion. People in Africa eat it raw and get its full advantage. Whew! Then we better get hold of a seedling and start planting them here, lol.. Of course, we can always order the supplement online..

For a month or so, we have been buying food from everywhere we find yummy homemade viands for lunch. We have so many sellers here in our area so it saves me energy and time. But we are always in caution for we do not exactly know if they are clean when they prepared said foods. So we make sure that we buy only from those who we see are clean in their food preparation, as well as their surroundings. I would not want to see for an actos attorney should anyone of us contract bladder cancer due to the use of actos..

Our constant provider is the manang and her family whose home cooked meals serves so many patrons, yet they are still able to maintain cleanliness in their area..

Plus, they are not much of a commercial venture as they serve only lunch..

My daughter and I went for a stroll at Divisoria one time and she wanted us to eat at Jollibee afterwards, instead of our usual McDonalds trips. So we went and she told me that she wanted to try the Jollibee Hash Brown Burger.

It's pretty much the same as a regular burger, with cheese. The difference is that, instead of the bun or bread, with the Jollibee Hash Brown Burger you get two hash browns hugging your burger.. Perhaps the plus deal here is that, the hash browns were baked and not fried.. Lili says it's just okay, so I presume it's not quite a hit with my daughter, otherwise, she'd ask me or tell me that we buy it again when we go to Jollibee the next time..
