I have always wanted to post about this street food that people love to eat, not only here in Cagayan de Oro City, but in other parts of the Philippines. However, I am not able to do so because I find the smell of used oil too intoxicating, especially when simply passing by Pabayo Street, where stalls selling Chicken Proven have sprouted like mushrooms for years and counting, leaving the street totally unhygienic and polluted. Simply put, I am NOT a fan of the food they are selling there.

But one time, while waiting for my mom to come down from her office building, we parked the car just beside this singular stall that sells Chicken Proven. Actually, I wouldn't know about it if my father didn't mention it. I didn't smell any stinky odor of used oil, and the place was clean enough. There were even two tables for two groups to occupy, should that be the case.

And just like all other stalls, they sell compact rice, in lieu of "puso", or hanging rice. Most of their customers here are students from the schools nearby, as well as passersby coming from the different offices in the area.

Although there is just one attendant at that time, she was able to show me how fast their service is, in a clean and organized fashion.

What makes the Chicken Proven more tasty is the sauce.. But unlike those we saw at Pabayo Street, the sauces are placed in closed containers, which only gets opened when customers use them, as they drizzle the sauce on the Chicken Proven.

There are two types of sauce. One is Spicy and Hot, that's the one with brownish color, and the Spicy and Sweet, in orange color. With sauces in their containers, you are assured there is NO DOUBLE DIPPING here..

Now if you're wondering how Chicken Proven is made, it is made out of the proventriculus of a chicken, seasoned and coated with flour or corn starch, then deep-fried and served with vinegar dipping or a specially-made sauce (sweet and sour ketchup mixed with pepper, etc). In Cagayan de Oro City, you may try Chicken Proven located in many different places like divisoria, Corrales Avenue along Xavier University, and as mentioned above, Pabayo-Chavez streets. Find them in several "stalls" in these streets. Chicken Proven costs 5 pesos (less than $USD 1 = 42 pesos [varies]) per stick. Although Chicken Proven is quite addicting, especially with specially-made sauce, I must warn you that it is bad for the health. A little may be okay, but eating them every day won't be good for the body. Think of uric acid and gall bladder/kidney stones. Get the picture? Since Chicken Proven would go well with "puso" (a type of rice wrapped in coconut leaves and steamed sold at 5 pesos each), some people eat them as regular daily meals. The combination may satisfy hunger in an instant, and may be easy for the budget, but let's all be conscious of its long-term effect..

And again, there is no other Chicken Proven I can recommend in this city, but the one located at Tiano/Del Pilar Streets.. Lastly, this is NOT a paid post.. Just a happy customer..

I have never liked Ampalaya, or Bitter Gourd. But when I saw this image shared by my cousin, I suddenly had this craving for the yummy Ampalaya dish, minus the bitterness. It felt like being caught in a frenzy choosing between kobo versus kindle, and I could not even blink..

I do not know how some people do it. While most of the time, bitter gourd dishes are always bitter, some cook it without the bitter taste. Just like some of my family and relatives, my aunt and cousins, cook this dish very nicely too. How the bitter taste disappears is an art that only a few knows how to deal with.

Shop at More Food Adventures

My sister and I went to the groceries yesterday afternoon, with the two kids in tow. Well, our original plan was to buy something at the department store but since we had to buy meat and vegetables and some cold cuts, we went to the grocery and decided to do some fashion shopping when we do not have kids with us.

I came across the ready to cook version of Roti Prata, which I so loved when I was in Singapore a few years back. Unfortunately, when I asked the counter girl how much it was worth, I was stunned by the high price. NOT a good buy so I decided to let it slip my fingers. I also thought that I should just look for a recipe and try to do it myself.. I am no expert, but I am sure it will cost less when I make my own.. But then again, I am not Hindu, not experienced in doing a Roti, so maybe I will take time to really learn how to make it.

By the way, Roti means "bread" in India, and Prata means "flat", so Roti Prata can best be translated as Indian Flat breads..

Here's a recipe I found:

Ingredients:
500g all purpose flour
1 tbsp sugar
Pinch of salt
1 Can condensed milk
1 egg
Few tbsps ghee or oil
water

Procedure:

Add everything to the flour, except the water . When adding water, do it a little at a time and make a soft dough. Leave dough overnight. Then divide dough into small equal balls.
Use ghee or oil and work on a flat , clean surface.
Roll up each ball and twist it into a coil.
Roll each again as thin as possible into a round shape.
Roll up and coil it again. Then flatten it by flipping and tossing it. I found this video in You Tube to see how it is done.. My goodness, this cute guy is an expert... wish I could do just that...

When done, put dough pieces on a greased ladle and cook it until flaky and crispy .
Serve hot with Curry (fish, chicken, beef or lamb). You can also serve it with sugar or condensed milk.

By the way, there is the plain roti prata, and there is also the flavored ones, such as the egg roti prata, or the onion or garlic flavored ones.. I think it goes with commercialism.. But the recipe above is for the plain or original recipe of roti prata..

My sister, Lili and I, do not really love these dessert cups from Greenwich. They are not really that great, but the creaminess is something we adore on a hot day. But if I have to chooses between the two, I would prefer the Chocolate flavored dessert than the Caramel flavored cup.

I know people need not have ample analytical balance to realize that teh snack below is better than above.. Well, Quaker Oat cookies is truly better that a creamy dessert.

Of course, you have the option to buy them or simply bake your own. Of course, a huge glass of cold fruit juice is the best partner of this treat..

Last week we went to our family's temporary abode in Opol and spent a couple of days there. It was like a week-long gathering for my little brother's birthday. The night we set forth for the journey, we passed by the Durian vendor and bought some..

It was by far the creamiest Durian this season.. So the next day, we used some Durian meat to flavor our Maja Blanca. Well, we simply added it to the old recipe, but instead of putting vanilla, we added Durian into the mixture..

A couple of stirs through the heat and some molding and refrigeration, we enjoyed our Durian flavored Maja Blanca.. Served it with grated cheese as topping. So yummy!!!

Do you know that this ordinary looking bowl of beans can actually help increase testosterone levels? Well, it's not just Mongo Beans, but all other kinds of beans can do so too. You see, beans are rich sources of zinc. Zinc increases testosterone levels and sperm production, that's according to a magazine I have read, which somehow got it's source from a US study. The said vitamin, Zinc, is vital to health because it strengthens the immune system, and helps build new cells too. It also promotes mental alertness and growth. While Zinc plays a key role in the health of the male and female reproductive systems by giving a testosterone boost, there are also other kinds of food that do the same. On the contrary, if beans is not allowed in your diet, there are alternative sources of zinc.

I am a Tapa, Longanisa, Tocino and Chorizo addict. I have favorites and I have tasted not so good ones too. Though I always make it a point not to remember the bad ones, and only reminisce of the yummy ones, I can't help but remember not to buy them Anyway, I was taught that in cooking any of them, you have to have water first before oil.. Except for the ready to fry kind where oil is the only thing you cook them in.

In cooking the SLERS Chorizo we bought at SaveMore, of course I also used water...

But if there was one thing different from all other cooking process, I remembered what the SLERS attendant told me as he handed me my packet of Chorizo. He told me, and I listened, that as soon as the water would boil, I should put oil...

After putting oil, of course it continued cooking the SLERS Chorizo when the water evaporated. The oil browned the SLERS Chorizo, and that added to the yummy looking treat on our table during breakfast...

Most people, including myself, love a healthy treat and this SLERS Chorizo is actually one that I can rank among the healthy indulgences of life. See, the reason why oil is needed to is that, the chorizo is made of solid meat. I saw with my own eyes that there isn't any trace of pork fat in it. If you use a healthier kind of oil, it will be wiser too.

This SLERS Chorizo is available for only P 36.00/10 pieces. That's actually quite affordable..

For those who have a sweet tooth like us, here's what we had yesterday, on a humid Sunday... It was just easy to buy the Turon from Monterey Market Express near Corpus Christi, and served them with Crumpy chocolate which melts unto the hot Turon.. And when it was time to eat it, my oh my... It was really good.

By the way, this Turon from Monterey Market Express is really yummy, even without the chocolate topping.. And it's clean too. I should know, I know the people who prepared them...

Simple and yummy..

On our last night with my aunt's family, we enjoyed the dessert that she and my sister made the previous night. We actually had dinner at my other aunt's place and when we got home, we couldn't resist the yummy dessert that my aunt wanted us to try since day one of our vacation.

Black Sambo entails having two different recipes of gelatin infused treats. One being milk flavored, while the other is chocolate. Here is the recipe:

For both white and black layers (do them separately):

1. Boil the knox gelatin on water.

2. Mix all the other ingredients with the dissolved knox gelatin.

2. Let it cool down.

3. When first layer is cool, do the next layer (1).

Last Sunday, we went to Masao (Mazaua) Beach to cool ourselves at the beach due to the recurring brown out in the city of Butuan. It was unplanned hence, we didn't bring so much food nor prepared for said beach activity. What we took, however, was what we prepared for lunch, which supposedly we ate at my aunt's house. But the heat due to the lack of electricity was unbearable that we had to leave for the beach..

A peddler of green Mangoes passed by so we bought two bags from her. A little later, the food ordered by my uncle arrived at our hut.

There was Kinilaw, which was prepared quite well by the Manang at the stall... As to the kind of fish to use for Kinilaw, or Ceviche, it's all up to the customer..

Then Fish Head soup.. It's actually your choice whether you will opt to have soup or simply have the whole fish, body and head broiled to perfection. Or you may choose another fish for that recipe.

The Sinugbang Isda, of which, the body of the fish was broiled along-side squids that were tastefully served on a banana leaf.. The stalls are just along the road, which are actually just near the cottage where we rented...

They actually sell different kinds of fish. Sea water fishes as well as milk fishes from the nearby pond owned by the Aguilars.. The ponds you will pass by as you enter the beach.. This is what will catch your eye before looking at the Mazaua Shrine.... After which, you will see the stalls selling the fishes, ready to be cooked to your desired recipe.. While food is being cooked, you can either take a pose at the beach, at the cottage or at the shrine..

Do watch out for other vendors for if you get lucky, you will be able to get some bargain when you buy souvenirs and what-nots...

As for us, we had yummy seedless grapes for dessert, as I haggled with the vendor who gave it at a huge discount and added bunches for my loot... hahaha... Anyway, aside from the food above, there are also Lechon Manok, Lechon Baboy and all others sold nearby. There is even ice cream, if you so desire....

Oh boy. We found a really good teacher for Saxophone here in Butuan, and I am quite excited to meet his mom too. I saw the etude alto Saxophone and how he played it so smoothly. Word has it that his mom is also a musician, and a music coach too. The mother and son tandem had been playing in many events in the US before they decided to move back here and opened their hearts to teaching and training people for some musicality. If only we are not going home tomorrow or the next day, I could enroll the two kids under their tutelege.

This Mother’s Day, show your mom how much you care by getting her a box of Krispy Kreme’s flower-shaped doughnuts.

That’s right! On its 75th birthday, Krispy Kreme honors
every mom by releasing its first-ever flower-shaped doughnuts. Made
especially for all mothers out there, these melt-in-your-mouth treats
come in three fun and festive colors that are sure to bring a smile on
everyone’s face—pink, yellow and white.

Krispy Kreme’s flower-shaped Mother’s Day doughnuts are only available
from April 13 to May 31, 2012. So hurry and go to a store near you.
Grab a bouquet before they wither away.

My sister and I went to my aunt's office two days ago and we three decided to have a break and walked a few steps away from their office to have snacks at Gold N' Pearl. With all the different choices, we got to taste some goodies, including this slice of Cassava Roll. It resembles a huge Peanut Cassava Roll, only it had cheese as topping and not crushed peanuts. Nevertheless, it was good. I will definitely recommend this Cassava Roll should you chance upon Gold N' Pearl.

My sister also liked their Cinnamon bread, and it was good too. Soft bread with yummy cinnamon on top.

I also tried their Sylvannas, but it was not what I expected a Sylvannas to be, so I wouldn't really recommend that..

Their Chocolate Roll is not as rich as others we have tasted, but melted chocolate chips make up for it.. It's worth a try.

Lastly, the Custard Cake was good, although, it would have been a better fair if the custard is a little thicker..

Now, if we compare their prices with other bakeries, they are of course very affordable. Most of the cakes and rolls are priced at P 16 per slice, while bread is only at P 7.. Their food price, plus some Medifast coupons, your savings can go a long long way...

Weeks ago, we bought Indian Mangoes from a stand in Plaza Divisoria, and when we reached home, peeled them and enjoyed every piece with Boyong's Bagoong.. YUM! The mangoes were crunchy and just right. Not too sour, and we all enjoyed them..

Yesterday, at the beach, a beach peddler sold me two bags of peeled mangoes and I didn't like the bagoong she offered with it, so I simply chose salt.. Unfortunately, we all didn't like the mangoes. It had crunch alright, but not the right sourness.. It was too much.. We should have bought only one bag..

My sister and I went to eat lunch at this small food shop near her former school, with her wearing her scrub tops, after her weekly rounds at the place where she works. It's actually just beside The Barn, and eating at this new joint is actually a good experience for us. The staff were nice, and the food arrived on time.

Their approach to cooking Liempo is quite different from the usual fair. Although there have been many Liempo places which sells Liempo in a Lechon-like manner, Liempo King offers a different experience as one takes a bite of the bits and pieces of sliced Liempo. From the size when it was cut, marinated and broilled, Liempo King Liempo looks totally like a whole new face of Liempo. The taste is commendable as it is cooked just right. What's more, the crispiness of Lechon skin can be crunched upon evey Liempo King liempo skin.. I wouldn't say it's better than lechon though, but, it is better than other Lechon-Liempo products that's around Cagayan de Oro City..

Lookie... it is yummy inside and out.. Crunchy skin, tasty meat that imagining it while doing this post makes me salivate... hahahaha

Some peddler sold us this yummy seedless grapes at P 230 a kilo. Actually, they priced it at P 270 a kilo but we haggled and ended at the lowest price they can give..

I had fun taking photos of my sister and the grapes.. Crazy huh?

But really, we enjoyed every bit and piece of seedless grape that we ate.. Healthy choice for snacking at the beach.. Good source of vitamin C for the kiddies who have colds..

Yesterday after swimming at Masao, we went to buy Shrimps and Crabs. We didn't bother changing from the beach because it was a rainy afternoon anyway. We could all get wet if the rain came again. From sleet, it stopped and so we enjoyed our ride at the back. Still, our legs and feet had sand all over, so we really needed to wash them off. Good thing that the area had a water pump. At least we were able to clean ourselves while our uncle and aunt went to the dealers for the seafoods. After we washed up, some people came with buckets and pails. So it must be a community owned water pump. Since it is near the seafoods dealers' shops, customers who may want to wash can directly go there and pump water out..

Now, enough with the water pump. What really amazed me there was the crab that weighed 2 kilos..

Shop at More Food Adventures

So Easter arrived and it was also the time Malanang celebrated its Fiesta with their patron saint, San Vicente Ferrer. Because it is my parent's alternative home after Sendong, we found an excuse to celebrate too. But unlike the previous feasts, we only had simple food served as budget is tight.

We had the following:

Fruit Salad with Cherries on top.. Lili's favorite... This was what I prepared on a Black Saturday.. Boy, this was so creamy because of the milk and cream used..

My father's yummy Humba...Soft meat that falls off the bone, delicious sauce to match..

My father's Patatim. This took hours to cook inside the presure cooker outisde the house, on a low burning charcoal cooker. I tell you, the pork leg is to die for. My father's been cooking this recipe for years and the taste remains the same.

This is Suman given by my mother's offciemate who happens to live in the same village. My mom gave her a bottle of Macaroni Salad in exchange, lol..

I prepared meat balls, and I forgot to snap them when they were served, lol. The photo above was when I was yet cooking them, deep fried in vegetable oil.

My mother's Chicken Tanghon, or what's left of it..

The Macaroni Salad I also prepared the day before the fiesta. I used elbow macaroni for the pasta, cheddar cheese, raisins, pineapples and Best Foods Mayo Magic all purpose dressing. And I wouldn't recommend any other mayonnaise.

We also had Fried Chicken and some fish recipe, but I totally forgot to snap them. Anyway, the food may just be few and the selections are quite ordinary, but because the food served were prepared with love, they all were expectedly delicious..

We woke up early for an early trip to El Salvador to visit the Divine Mercy Shrine. We saw that another structure will soon rise, a community church.

After our visit, we went straight to Gaisano Bulua for grocery shopping. If there was a healing mass, our stay at Divine Mercy would have been longer, but due to the Lenten Schedule, the ordinary schedule was not followed.

Although it was Black Saturday yet, we bought MEAT: Chicken, Beef and
Pork. And as soon as we arrived at my parent's place, we cooked them in
preparation for the Feast of San Vicente Ferrer which fell on the same
day as Easter Sunday. We also cooked Nilagang Baka for our viand for lunch of Black Saturday. I guess you could say that lunch and all the way through all meals that day and the next, we had meat.. and more meat..

Except the chips that we bought, lol..

Good Friday came without Internet connection for me, so it is only now that I have been able to update. We didn't have "Binignit", but we had sweetened or candied bananas. I didn't prepare binignit because we planned of going to my parent's new place, the alternative place that is.

So when we got there, that was what greeted us. Yummy dessert. We had lunch here at the apartment and I actually prepared three types of fish recipe. Fish Fingers, Fish Fritters and Fish Chips.. The difference is in the size of the fish fillet used, as well as the batter.

I actually used the same fish, Pangasius that we bought frozen from the supermarket. My friend Debbie was able to buy some with tiger direct coupons, and she saved a lot.

In the evening, we had the left over food from the apartment, some dilis, and Fried Tulingan. A few hours after dinner, we had ice cream..

Well, that's our NO MEAT Good Friday... How was yours?

Shop at More Food Adventures

Century is a name brand we have loved for years. From the canned tuna products, Century Tuna has come up with yummy Bangus treats. There's the Bangus Tocino, Bangus Longanisa, Bangus Tapa and the many others to choose from.

If you want simple Bangus, there are many flavors and cuts to choose from too. You can have them whole if you wish.

My family loves Bangus Belly so much that buying the whole Bangus compared to buying the belly cut will not be a great idea.

For our Holy Week food, we have included some Century Bangus, apart from all the other sea foods that we bought. For my family, Holy Week is the time where we do not eat meat, be it chicken, beef or pork. We eat mostly fish and all other sea foods plus vegetables and fruits.

It is always nice to have lots of alternatives, especially on occasions where there is a limitation. And although there is a limitation to what we can eat for this season, surely, there are varieties to choose from. Also, they can be used to create new recipes as well, alternative to meat to be precise.

My daughter loves Sky Flakes. Aside from the original flavor, she has come to love the many varieties. Her current love is this Sky Flakes crackers garlic flavor. She has loved Sky Flakes ever since she was three. She would get some for herself while grocery shopping, and I adore the fact that she keeps telling me Sky Flakes is healthier than all other crackers. Sometimes, I ask myself if this is normal. Don't get me wrong, she loves choco cookies and polvoron tasting cookies that most kids her age love, but she loves Sky Flakes all the more..

Shop at More Food Adventures

So today we started our day with a NO Meat breakfast. Just milk and some bread, crackers and muffins. By lunch time, we had a hearty meal of rice, vegetables in coconut milk and some dried fish.

These two are perfect...

By snack time, we had Squid Balls... part of the loot that we bought for our NO MEAT Holy Week meals...

For dinner, we had left over vegetables on coconut milk and some fried marinated boneless Bangus (Milkfish) Belly.

Yummy NO MEAT day----

How many
restaurants are there in your vicinity? Chances are that you have a Chinese or
Indian restaurant tucked away around the corner, or maybe a good little French
bistro or Italian restaurant on the high street. In this multi-ethnic society
more choices are available from Turkish, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese sushi, or
even a dish of Swedish meatballs in a certain home ware store will open our
world a bit more. It gives everyone a chance to try out something different.

There is probably a local restaurant offering excellent food stamped with the
hallmark of fine quality like Michelin stars or AA rosettes, to suit the more
discerning palate (and wallet).
When it comes to food, the world is at our fingertips. Food has become
synonymous with big business. Magazines and TV programmes are entirely devoted
to food, often offering prestigious awards. There are hundreds of TV chefs.
Book shelves are groaning with the weight of cookery books. As a result, we
have become more discerning when it comes to food.

Everywhere we look, restaurants are tempting us to enter and try their fare.
When it comes to eating out we are spoilt for choice, and there’s something to
suit every pocket and occasion.
Most restaurants now offer the facility to pay by either credit card or charge card,
enabling people to splash out once in a while without worrying if they have
enough cash in their wallets/purses.

There is so much more on offer now, compared to 20-30 years ago, when we were
stuck in a time warp with our prawn cocktail, Cordon Bleu Coq au Vin and Black
Forest gateaux.
How times have changed, owing to the influx of immigrants who have started up
restaurants and have enabled us to try out world foods.

With world-wide travel a norm, most people have a wider experience of sampling
foreign foods and often like to recreate that holiday feeling by going to
places like Spanish tapas bars to relive the delights of foods they have tried.

Maybe you are lucky enough to live in a gastro tourist location, crammed with
fantastic eateries to suit all budgets, where the most is made from using local
ingredients, like home reared cattle, fresh fish, organically grown fruit and
vegetables.

Pop into your local restaurants and see what is on offer. It might not be like
Orchard Road in Singapore, littered with eateries, but you might be pleasantly
surprised.

Today was a busy day, and I have missed eating a NO MEAT meal. In fact, my aunt and I ate some pork Humba for lunch, and pizza smothered with sausages and pepperoni for snacks. So, as soon as I came home this afternoon, I asked my sister to go with me for some NO MEAT trip to the grocery.
