company's JS1 controller has just added drivers for every S60 3rd
and 5th Edition device on the market -- N97 and 5800
XpressMusic included -- plus a whole host of S60-based LGs and
Samsungs like the INNOV8 and the

KT770. Of course, that doesn't solve the whole issue of N-Gage
incompatibility with many of these, but the JS1 can also be used
for nifty parlor tricks like web browsing; combine that with the
5800's included desk stand and you've got the couch potato's

Quick, what's easier to find: an E52 or a game
that'll run on it? You'd think this is an egregious case of putting
the cart before the horse, but you've got to give the N-Gage team
credit for being well-prepared -- they're already listing Nokia's
new mega-thin business candybar as being compatible with the
service. Also on board is the just-released (and still hard to find
in many parts of the world) N86 8MP and --
perhaps most notably -- the N97, making the
beastly handset Nokia's first S60 5th Edition phone with N-Gage

A little tip to Nokia: don't bother announcing stuff like this at
the exact same time as monsters like the E72, because we
assure you that no one's going to care. That's a shame, too,
because the 3710 fold is a surprisingly well-equipped phone for the
€140 Nokia will be asking for it (about $193) unlocked when it
launches in the fourth quarter of the year -- on top of the
standard Series 40, AGPS, stereo Bluetooth, FM radio, and concealed
external display, you've also got a full 3.2 megapixels of
photographic power and 3G. No carrier partners have been announced,
but couldn't you totally picture T-Mobile USA wanting in on this in
an AWS flavor?

Nokia Music veep addresses slow Comes with Music sales in the UK

After some rather disheartening (albeit unconfirmed) estimates last week that Nokia's Comes with Music service had snagged only 23,000 subscribers in the United Kingdom, Rob Taylor, vice president of Nokia Music says that the company is pretty "happy" with what its learned there so far. He admitted that the UK launch (the service's first) devices -- the 5310 Xpress Music and the 8GB N95 -- were "slightly out of date" at the time pointing out that the service was doing much better in subsequent markets, which all boast the 5800 as their hero device. Taylor said he also recognized that Nokia needed more retail partners to help move units, and that the company is not "giving up" on the UK as a market for CwM, adding that they'll be bringing the 5800 there in the future. No word on when that might happen yet -- but we're going to keep out eyes peeled for you.

Nokia N97 specs fully revealed

The remainder of the N97's juicy technical details have now been spilled on Nokia's dev-oriented Forum nokia site -- previously, only cursory data had been posted here -- and there are a couple notable bits that might be of concern to developers and would-be buyers alike. First off, the processor turns out to be a single-core ARM 11 putting along at 434MHz, just 65MHz faster than the 5800's. It's an improvement, yes, but when you consider that the competing i8910 from Samsung runs a higher-performance 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8, it throws a wet towel on the whole thing. Seeing how this is designed to be Nokia's premier device for 2009, couldn't they have gone for broke with the silicon? Secondly -- this is something we already knew, but the spec sheet reminded (and delighted) us -- the N97 supports charging via micro-USB, which the 5800 does not. Life's about tradeoffs, isn't it?

Thanks to the always revealing FCC, we knew good and well Nokia's painfully expensive N97 had Carolina (and probably the other states, to be fair) on its mind, but now we know the moment of truth is drawing near. As of right now, Nokia's US website has a teaser block informing us Yanks that we'll be able to pre-order this here smartphone "soon." Hitting the link only directs us the European legalese that we've digested before, but surely it'll lead to something meaningful in due time. Patience... it's a virtue.

After hearing initial reports that Nokia's Comes With Music subscription service was doing "okay," word on the streets is now... even less good. According to estimates released by Music Ally at an Association of Independent Music conference in London, Nokia's gotten about 23,000 subscribers to the service since it launched last October. That's not a great number, if it's anywhere near accurate... though Nokia has "refused to confirm" whether or not it is. Tim Grimsditch, head of Nokia's product marketing division added that it's "a very new business model, we're live in five markets and the numbers only mention one. We're going to continue to develop the model and fine tune how we market it." That said, the report can't be terribly heartening either way you slice it, and is rather reminiscent of N-Gage's niche market status if you ask us.

It's 2009 and we're still waiting for the Near Field Communication revolution. However, due to tough economic times and a lack of consumer devices, planned commercial NFC rollouts will likely be pushed into 2010. Still, we can add one more device to the NFC tally -- the Nokia 6216 Classic. The 6216 is Nokia's first handset with an embedded NFC chipset that communicates with NFC applications stored on the SIM. That little trick keeps the carriers happy while allowing consumers to keep their credit card info and contact-less ticketing and payment applications on the SIM for easy mobility between NFC devices. A good thing too, since this middling 3G candy bar with camera, FM radio, and microSD slot will be of limited appeal to most.
