Light stenciling is like light graffiti, except that it uses stencils for greater control. This past September photographer Wittner Fabrice had the opportunity to visit Vietnam where he managed to execute a number of his unique light stencils in various locations around the country. Keep in mind these are not digital, but rather long-exposure photos created with lights shone through large cut stencils.

Motion blur photography is accomplished using slow shutter speeds, panning, or zooming, and can yield very cool results. By moving either the camera or the subject, an awesome sense of motion and action can be captured using these techniques. The following shots are of moving subjects where the photographer has made the choice to set their camera to capture the movement as blur rather than freezing it.

Kofun are megalithic tombs for rulers in Japan, constructed between the early 3rd century and early 7th century. The most common type of kofun has a shape of a keyhole, having one square end and one circular end, when looked down upon from above. The funeral chamber was located beneath the round part and consisted of a group of megaliths.

Next to the big tombs there are also tens of rectangular smaller tombs, called baicho.

Forty seven kofun, including the Daisen Kofun, make up the Mozu Tumulus. The other kofun were built not by emperors but by other wealthy elites of a growing Japan.

The Hashihaka Kofun, an ancient burial mound in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture. It was discovered that the monumental grave was surrounded by a large moat, just as the later tombs of the emperors.

Like Egyptian Pharaohs, the Kofun aristocrats who were buried in the tombs were buried with bronze mirrors, swords, jewels, and other items. Today, the Imperial Household Agency has listed 740 kofun as tombs of imperial family members, although this number is in dispute. Neither the public nor archaeological teams are allowed into most of these kofun, although a team was permitted to enter the tomb of Empress Jingu in 2008.

In photography, double exposure is a technique in which a piece of film is either exposed twice, or two different images are merged, and the resulting photographic image shows the second image superimposed over the first one. The photos below are some beautiful examples of double exposure. They are original because they did not need any Photoshop editing.

Tejal Patni is an Indian photographer based in Dubai. Patni takes the concept of new beginnings to conceptualize a 2012 calendar for fashion brand Splash. What can be described as a giant hole in the water is actually a method for controlling the release of flows from a dam or levee into a downstream area. These spillways help prevent floods from ‘dam’-aging or destroying a dam. The most eye-catching spillway is the bell-mouth, shaped like an inverted bell, which is particularly noted for its resemblance to a giant plughole.

Usually this message is conveyed through some abstract symbolism which can be interpreted by the viewer. The conceptual art uses Photoshop effects, image editing and image manipulation effects.

These photographs of ‘spirits’ are taken from an album of photographs unearthed in a Lancashire second-hand and antiquarian bookshop by one of the National Media Museum’s curators. They were taken by a controversial medium called William Hope (1863-1933). In about 1905 Hope became interested in spirit photography after capturing the supposed image of a ghost while photographing a friend. He went on to found the Crewe Circle – a group of six spirit photographers led by him. Following World War I support for the Crewe Circle grew as the grieving relatives of those lost to the war sought a means of contacting their loved ones. In 1922, the Society for Psychical Research sent Harry Price to investigate the group. Price collected evidence that Hope was substituting glass plates bearing ghostly images in order to produce his spirit photographs. Later the same year Price published his findings, exposing Hope as a fraudster.  However, Hope continued to practice, despite his exposure.
