Yama Girls - cousins of the mori girls?

In the last two years, an emerging Japanese subculture has gained increasing popularity.

Meet the yama girls.

While mori girls identify with quiet lives in the forest, yama girls (or mountain girls) embrace the undulating majesty of mountain landscapes. Yama girls enjoy hiking and the great outdoors, and this is reflected in their clothing and accessory choices.

While mori girls are represented by the magazine Papier, the quintessential yama girl magazine is Randonnée.

Yama girl fashion places an emphasis on bright colours and functionality. Sturdy and comfortable hiking boots, tights, leggings and socks in a variety of colours and patterns, flannel and backpacks are key.

Yama girls have also popularised hiking in skirts, and several Japanese clothing labels have started selling hiking skirts to cater to the demand.

Of course, this also means that a variety of beautiful camping and hiking equipment including tents, mats and foldable chairs has now become available in Japan (click on the pictures for a closer look).

While this is a site about mori girls, I thought it would be appropriate to welcome our yama girl cousins.

Yu Aoi collaborates with Journal Standard

Months ago, Yu Aoi collaborated with Japanese fashion label Journal Standard and launched a special collection. As regular readers will know, Yu Aoi is the favourite actress of many mori girls. The collection showcases her personal style--gentle, quirky, but never cloying or overly sweet.

Tshirt, lace collar and rolled-up chinos. An unexpected pairing, but somehow the effect is very nice.

This is my favourite item in the collection. What a glorious dress!

This translucent lace top worn with checked pants gives us a boyish take on a usually ultra-feminine material.

This orange jumpsuit with beaded belt is very spunky.

Cuffed boyfriend jeans in a variety of candy colours. Love this look!

While this collection may not be for everyone, I love how Yu Aoi is taking risks and lending a unique touch to the clothes and styling. Can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

Depending on where you live, there may be organisations around you collecting donations for water, food, clothes, etc. You may even have a chance to volunteer your time. However, I'm going to focus on donating money because I'm sure every one of us in every country will have a chance to help out in that way.

There are many avenues for donation. However, it would be good to check that you're donating to a legitimate organisation, what proportion of the money spent is actually donated, and how they plan to use the money to help out. No use purchasing an expensive product you don't really like if they'll be donating only 10% of what they receive.

For most people outside of Japan, your local chapter of the Red Cross Society would probably one of the best channels for donation. Visit the website of your country's Red Cross Society to find out how to donate. Making a donation is easy and should involve nothing more than mailing a cheque or making a trip to their offices.

Just a few weeks ago, I was feeling down because I felt like I always seemed to be running out of money. I just never seemed to have enough money left over at the end of the month to buy any of the nice clothes I wanted or to eat at fancy restaurants.

The recent disaster really put things into perspective for me and made me realise how small my own problems were. It also reminded me that it's nice to live a bit more simply. If you buy one less dress every month, or take the bus/train when you could have taken a taxi, or skip your manicure, or pack lunch for two days, or borrow that book from the library instead of buying it, and then you donate that amount of money you would otherwise have spent, you'll find that it's actually really easy to help out in a small way even if you're not feeling rich.

Recently I went for a manicure for the first time in years and I immediately regretted it. The polish chipped after just one day! And the whole process cost me enough to buy 3-6 decent meals. So I've told myself to be more careful with how I part with my money. There are always people who need it more.

So let's all try to help, shall we?

Just a quick post to share some pictures of Yu Aoi in the November 2011 issue of Japanese magazine Jille. The theme of the photoshoot is boy's style, and the baggy layers are quite reminiscent of mori girl style. She carries off the boyish clothing perfectly. There's something about her. I would never use the word "girly" on her, yet her face radiates feminity in a very earthy, natural way.

The theme of Japanese fashion brand Ciaopanic's ladies' collection is "sweet vintage," something that should interest most mori girls. The pictures below were shot in the United States. I love them!

I have a thing for vintage motorcycles, lazy shirts with collars and well-worn cardigans. The first picture contains all three!

The floral bomber jacket in the first picture below is great, and the very American tshirts in both pictures are great fun.

Great examples of layering. The scarves wound all the way around the neck are distinctly mori girlish, and the roomy white dress in the bottom picture has a great silhouette.

These pictures smell of freedom.

Several months back, a Mori Girls Interior Magazine was published showcasing some truly lovely examples of mori girl-inspired interior design.

The key thing to remember when creating a mori girl-inspired interior is the subtle use of plants. A few stalks or a tiny bunch of flowers in shades such as yellow and cream, placed in simple glass vases or bottles, would be perfect.

Another thing to remember is to let in lots of natural light. So keep curtains light and airy. Large windows are always a plus.

While the look should be light and generally uncluttered, it's okay to make a bit of a mess here and there, especially when there are many things to be stored. Just use lots of shelves and drawers, preferably made of wood.

Let the quirky spirit of mori girls shine through with some well-placed decorative items and pictures.

Brighter colours can be used too if you prefer a bolder look.

Home is where you dream and cry, it's where you feel the most human.

Syrup Winter 2010 catalogue

Continuing the trend of spending Christmas in a European wonderland, Syrup's winter catalogue (as well as a special in Japanese magazine Spoon) was shot in the Czech Republic. How do you think these pictures compare to those in last year's catalogue, which was shot in Estonia?

The Syrup models have been sporting these long, relaxed silhouettes that can easily be recreated with long coats or tops and below-the-knee skirts.

Syrup clothes never seem to have any waist, something I actually prefer maybe because I don't have much of a shape to begin with. If you prefer slightly more fitted silhouettes, cinch your top or dress at the waist with a simple belt.

I am enamoured with these darling animal cardigans! Animal motifs are a favourite of mori girls, and it doesn't get any cuter than this.

I hope all of you are having a good winter and/or Christmas season. In anticipation of winter, many of the mori girls' favourite clothing labels have produced fashion spreads shot in Europe. Scandinavia is often cited as the textbook definition of the mori girl's dream destination.

So it's no surprise that SM2, a Japanese label that is by now a firm favourite of many mori girls, has travelled to Sweden for the winter.

Cycling to the bakery with backpack in tow followed by an hour or two at the library is many mori girls' idea of a perfect day.

Just like last winter, practical and cute duffle coats are the outerwear of choice. Other cold weather options include padded jackets, shawls and knits, to be paired with all manner of socks, stockings and tights. Layering is a mori girl's best friend.

SM2 sticks with its customary earthy, neutral palette, playing around with texture to keep things interesting.

A quick post--found these pictures in a random folder on my computer and wanted to share them before winter really and truly hits. Seems like it's been a strangely warm winter for many anyway.

I regret not spending much time outdoors this summer. It's been pretty cold and wet lately.

Sigh, I'm really missing beachy weather. I'm loving the bag in the second picture. It's perfect for bike riding!

As has been the case for quite a while, I've been finding the indoor pictures very charming indeed.

What are your plans this Christmas?

Like its name suggests, the clothing by Japanese fashion label Auntie Rosa is feminine, incorporates lots of florals and draws inspiration from vintage designs.

It seems to me that mori girls will be incorporating lots of fur and knits into their outfits this winter. There is so much scope for layering and playing around with textures during the winter months.

More knits, stoles, vests and winter hats will be making an appearance as the temperature falls.

Super Hakka is a Japanese brand I've wanted to feature for a while, but I could never find a website with pictures to post here. The fashion label has been featured in many Japanese magazines such as Spoon, Soup and Pretty Style. Loose shapes and lightweight fabrics make their dresses and tops perfect for mori girls.

Don't you just love the print on the first dress? There are snowflakes on the fabric! The second dress is simple without being boring and is perfect for everyday wear.

The first dress has such a fairy-like print, while the second would look great paired with sandals for a day at the beach, or with brown boots for an urban adventure.

The second dress features carousel horses, while the first dress has an autumnal air.

This dress gives off the ethnic or bohemian vibe that some mori girls love, while the polka-dotted scarf is simple yet whimsical and goes with anything.

Mori girls like accessories that are as functional as they are quaint, and these boots and backpack can very reliably take any mori girl out of summer and into fall.

SM2 Summer 2010

Those of you who are familiar with my blog will know that I feature Japanese brand SM2 every season. I think SM2 has a truly mori girl-style concept. I love checking out their interpretations of each season. This season, SM2 paints an idyllic picture of a gentle warm summer.

This time, we're uprooted from the temperate climate that SM2 clothes are usually associated with and relocated to the tropics. Making an appearance once again are sturdy sandals (see more here and here) and boyfriend jeans, this time accompanied by lightweight scarves and overalls.

Instead of sweating it out in the heat and humidity we usually associate with tropical climates, the SM2 girl seems to be enjoying comfortably moderate sunshine and a cool breeze.

The mori girl interpretaton of summer seems to involve keeping as cool as possible, perhaps by going out in the morning or evening rather than in the blazing hot afternoons, and never forgetting your hat.

I somehow really love pictures of people reading. I also really love her white blouse. It's simple and pretty and the fabric looks wonderfully light.

One of the life's best experiences is taking a nap outside in the sun after a long walk outside.

It seems to me that there are two types of fashion labels catered to mori girl tastes.

The first type of fashion label is liberal in its use of whimsical designs and bright, cute, often intricate details. Q-pot comes to mind as one such brand.

The second type is characterised by a laid back, organic-looking style. An example of such a brand would be SM2.

Earth Music & Ecology falls into the latter category. Simple, casual tops and comfy boyfriend jeans make up much of their summer collection. It's interesting to see mori girl interpretations of summer this season. Instead of the bright colours and taut, tanned, beach-ready bodies that usually adorn summer collections, Earth Music & Ecology's promotional photographs feature a dreamy, misty-eyed seaside scene and a contemplative Aoi Miyazaki.

Birkenstock-like sandals are featuring very strongly in this season's collections as mori girls trade in their boots for more summery footwear.

I love the dress she's wearing in the top picture. Light and airy, it's perfect for the beach and an alternative to the tanktops and daisy dukes usually seen on the beach.

Summer is here, but it's somehow looking as gentle as spring....

Just thought I'd share another photoshoot featuring Aoi Yu, this time from Japanese magazine Anan. It seems like her star has really risen alongside the increasing popularity of the mori girl aesthetic.

What sweet outfits! I love the relaxed yet tidy proportions.

The relaxed-fit clothing Yu Aoi is frequently seen in suits her perfectly. Even though these outfits can't be described as baggy by any measure, they retain a breezy, comfortable feel.

After seeing their lovely ads in several Japanese magazines, I decided to check out W Closet's clothes, and I wasn't disappointed. W Closet retains a laid-back, almost earthy aesthetic while keeping its designs up-to-date and on-trend. Lots of styling ideas here!

The boater hat has now established itself as a common sight on Japanese streets, as well as in the wardrobe of many a mori girl. Collared shirts, tied at the waist or just worn loose and unbuttoned, are a great way to incorporate layers into spring and summer outfits.

The first picture features one of my favourite articles of clothing for layering at the moment: the amorphous cropped tshirt. Great for wearing over long, printed dresses or anything with a high waist!

As feminine as mori girl fashion tends to be, I like to believe that the loose layers and high necklines lend an air of androgyny to the style. The menswear- (or, more accurately, boyswear-) inspired coordinates above are absolutely adorable. I particularly love the sailor shirt paired with sloppily rolled up trouser legs.

While their individual pieces aren't as intricate as those of many other brands, W Closet's styling is refreshingly down to earth and very achievable.

It's easy to see why Yu Aoi is a shoo-in for the mori girl title. From her quirky film choices to her whimsical persona, Yu Aoi doesn't seem to inhabit the same mundane world we sometimes feel trapped in. The first half of her most recent photo shoot in Japanese fashion magazine Pretty Style is otherworldly indeed.

Streetwear has never looked quite so ethereal. Yu Aoi manages to make even the baggiest of silhouettes look delicate.

I'm loving the first outfit. The scarf wrapped all around the neck, the amorphous dress and the white sneakers--perfect!

In the second half of the photo shoot, Yu comes back to earth--but oh, what a winsome, charming earth it seems to be!

Watching a movie alone in an old theatre and waiting for someone at the station.

Waiting at the cinema beside a bucket of popcorn and good old grocery shopping.

We too should begin ferreting out charming little moments in our everyday lives.

Wonder Rocket Spring 2010

I was browsing through the Wonder Rocket website and noticed their clothes were completely different from what I saw the last time I was there, so I thought I'd give them another mention. Many cute coordinates as usual!

I really like the second outfit. The loose tshirt and skirt combo avoids looking sloppy because of the intricate graphic and cheery sky-blue. And I'm sure many mori girls have worn tiered or ruffled dresses over long sleeved tops as in the first picture.

These dresses are ultra-feminine. I suggest giving these dresses a little structure by wearing them with boots.

The first dress is quite ethereal, while I love the colours in the second outfit!

The dress in the first picture is my favourite dress in the collection. It reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, though it's actually supposed to be grey not blue.

These skirts are delightfully fairy-like and remind me a little of ballerinas too. I've got a few dresses with similar skirts and have been told that they remind some people of the fairy dresses they wore when they were children.

Spring has officially arrived, and the loose, casual silhouette that more and more Japanese labels are adopting these days is perfect for breezy spring mornings. Olive des Olive is one such brand.

I'm seeing these floaty little floral skirts and shorts everywhere this spring. Very cute when paired with loose tops, tucked in or out!

Now that the weather is warmer, I forsee many mori girls turning away from boots to clogs and sandals. Biking and picnics are also two activities I am determined to enjoy more this spring/summer!

Alice in Wonderland-themed shoot in Kera May 2010

Just thought I'd share these pictures from the latest issue of Kera. Alice in Wonderland looks set to be a huge trend this year, and is particularly relevant to those into lolita and mori girl fashion. Alice-inspired fashion is sweet and feminine, but not too delicate for adventuresome sorts, and successfully captures the childlike spirit of exploration and curiosity that appeals to mori girls.

I think the third picture captures the spirit of Alice best. The boater hat and the baby blue skirt (light blue has been designated as Alice's official colour ever since the Disney's incarnation), with Alice perched on the edge of the rabbit hole, make me wonder what's on the other side of that tunnel.

Japanese brand SM2 is loved by mori girls everywhere. The brand's image closely echoes mori girls' chosen lifestyle, with its soothing images and rustic settings.

SM2's Spring 2010 collection is a subtle departure from the outdoorsy vibe present in its 2009 collections. The pictures in the latest catalogue create a more demure and domestic atmosphere.

Instead of exploring the great outdoors, the SM2 girl now settles down in a home filled with quaint furniture. Instead of picking apples outside, this season the SM2 girl bakes bread indoors.

The collection is characterised by SM2's signature loose silhouettes, this time in pale, creamy shades and accented with patterned socks and scarves.

I really love those sandals the model is wearing. This SM2 collection strikes me as much sweeter than the previous one. What do you think?

Just thought I'd share these photographs from the February issue of Japanese fashion magazine Fudge, which is popular with mori girls. These pictures give off a very quaint vibe. The offbeat accessories, layers, innocent-looking tights and the model's slightly geeky vibe make these images something mori girls may be able to relate to.

I am liking that checked jacket! The matryoshka dolls and cards also add to that Alice in Wonderland-like feel that's been everywhere of late.

Part of the charm of the mori girl lifestyle is that it offers a quiet brand of escapism. And there are few things more appealing to would-be escape artists than an imaginary life. Akira Minagawa's fashion label Sally Scott offers just that.

Sally Scott's brand concept revolves around the life of the imaginary girl (lives in Ohio, no dogs, two cats) after whom the brand is named. Of course, this means the label's catalogue is filled with charming images of a quiet little life many mori girls would aspire to.

Of course, Sally Scott would have to be immersed in a vintage-inspired environment careful not to be too cloying and sweet but cosy nonetheless.

She is frequently seen around rabbits and cats that possess strangely human qualities.

Needless to say, Sally Scott participates in all manner of quaint recreational activity, from blowing bubbles to bicycling.

And as any full-fledged mori girl would tell you, life imaginary or otherwise would not be complete without a few long walks through some foliage.

Sally Scott manages to do all this all the while clad in sixties-inspired frocks, pretty printed skirts and cute collared blouses.

A charmed life indeed.

Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2010 Ready-To-Wear

When I first became interested in fashion during my teenage years, Marc Jacobs was my favourite designer. I still have a soft spot for his label mainly because, even in its more serious collections, it always manages to maintain an air of youthfulness.

The Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2010 Ready-To-Wear collection not only retains the loose, slightly awkward silhouettes that characterise the brand's clothing, but also uses a light springtime palette that mori girls will love.

The first dress just smells of spring and looks adorable layered with the collared shirt, while the second polka-dotted dress is really cute and has layering potential too.

The first dress is an unusual spin on the well-loved checked dress. The hairstyle on the model in the second picture reminds me of Hagu from Honey and Clover.

These lovely long dresses are very suited to mori girl style.

I love the way the dresses seem to burst forth from the coats like budding flowers.

That last dress is beautiful and ethereal, but still manages to maintain an air of innocence, especially when paired with flat sandals instead of heels. I really love the idea of pairing beautiful dresses with flats.

The Syrup catalogue is consistently and unfailingly enchanting. Their beautiful pictures always inspire me to live a slightly sweeter life. The three concepts shaping the Syrup Spring 2010 collection are not only charming but also strike a chord in the hearts of mori girls. I have no doubt that the clothes are but a fraction of Syrup's charm.

The first concept, 'Syrup Culture Club,' brings to mind a quiet lifestyle filled with piles of books eagerly waiting to be read, old movies and solo voyages.

The clothes this time around are a bit more urban than those in their previous collections. The brown loose cuffed trousers and the khaki coat (in the first picture) remind of adventurer Tintin. Skirts are paired with loose tops, and the long-sleeved worn under the one-piece dress makes yet another appearance.

The second theme is a picnic at the botanic gardens. Personally, I love picnics, and I'm certain many mori girls share these sentiments. They're a great, hassle free way to feel a little closer to nature, even when you live in the city.

I love the different picnic set-ups in each picture. A-line dresses are featured liberally in this photoshoot and offer a comfortable way to enjoy picnics in comfort.

The third concept features lots and lots of flowers, primarily indoors and in pretty vases. The models are pictured in such beautiful surroundings. Anybody coming home to a house like that everyday would be lucky indeed!

The first dress has a lovely, elongated silhouette that's made a little cuter with white sneakers and apatterned top. The models always look so contemplative that just looking at these pictures calms one down right away.

Japanese fashion label Marble Sud has been a favourite of mori girls for quite some time, having been highlighted in Choco's Mori Girl Fashion & Style Book, as well as the Mori Girl eMook. Marble Sud clothing features playful prints and graphics and avoids being too delicate. There are graphic-print tshirts featuring lovely ink drawings, and everything else comes in delightful patterns.

The first outfit reminds me very much of Yu Aoi's Dandelion photobook in which she travels to Russia.

These pictures were taken from the latest issue of Spoon. The loose dress on the left looks cute when paired with sneakers and leggings, while the ethnic-inspired outfit on the right is perfect for woodland nomads. I also love this dreamland-themed photoshoot, particularly the picture of the model dozing off to another realm.

Much of Marble Sud's clothes are light, casual and down-to-earth. This is great for mori girls who are unwilling to compromise on comfort. The dresses, skirts and tops somehow always manage to retain a quaint air.

Adorable accessories make those daily walks even sweeter. With an umbrella that cute, afternoon showers become a pleasure rather than a hindrance.
