ARM WRESTLING. Hada a chance to shoot the CNY Arm Wrestling Championships at Steve's Restoration and Hotrods in Herkimer NY. Met some great people including Jim Dougan, Organizer of the event who allowed me to get close to the action. Arm Wrestling actually goes back to the Egyptions in 2000 BC, was popular among Native Americans and the finally became a sport here in 1952 at Gilardi's Saloon in Petaluma California.

Jim received an important award, the National Anthem was sung and then the games began.

Here are some images of this intense competition. Like two gladiators in the ring trying to win but without the intent of harming your opponent. Dramatic, but full of friendship and concern not to injure your opponent.

Street Portraits

2021-11-16T12:05:00.001-08:00

I love meeting and photographing people on the street. For me, it is easy. I smile, chat a bit and find that most people are happy to have their photo taken. It is important to use a small camera that does not intimidate. For this, I use a 12 year old Fuji X-Pro 1 with an 18mm f2.0 lens.

OLD CAR CITY

2018-01-14T13:21:00.000-08:00

These images are a few from my recent venture to Old Car City in White Georgia. The owner, Dean Lewis declares this junkyard as a work of evolving art as the forces of nature interact with 4200 pre-1972 autos placed on 34 acres of woods and field. Certainly there is a lot of US automotive history here represented by post WW ll and Korean war economic growth. You can see that car designers were obsessed with airplane and rocket design, trying to create vehicles that presented power and speed. Paint, oxidation, rust make for interesting artistic companions. Tech: Nikon D500 with Tokina 11-16mm for the wide angle shots and a Tokina 100mm Macro for the closer images. Enjoy, Jeff

Waterfall photography

2017-11-01T09:19:00.001-07:00

These photographs were made this morning at Chittenango falls in Madison County New York. The falls are near the town of Cazenovia.

Some tips: it is always great to go to waterfalls either during a very light rain after it's been raining for several days or just after the rain which was today's case. The water is flowing and you have an opportunity to make beautiful photographs

The camera should be secured on a tripod because of the slow shutter speed required

The aperture should be narrow about F 16, polarizing filter should be used to reduce glare from the rocks and deepen the color of the water. The shutter speed depending on the ISO used. In this case, ISO 100 needs to be slow between 3/10 and one second long.

A cable release or in the absence of that, using the timer mode of two seconds works just fine for this type of photography

The editing of these photographs was done in one of my favorite iPad applications, Snapseed.

Snapseed allows you to create a wide color dynamic range to bring out details from the shadows and really cause the image to pop, if it is not over done..

I hope you enjoy these images as much as I do, Jeff

Safari of the Weeds

2017-06-23T16:40:00.001-07:00

Great bugs out his AM. With insect macro photography, you really get an appreciation for the detailed functional design of our insect companions

I love the structure of the ants, the robber flies and especially my little buddy, the jumping spider. He kept on turning toward the lens! What a subject!

Gear: Nikon D500 with Toking 2.8 ATX VR Macro and a 1.4 Converter. ISO 1000, F9-10, Tv 1/1250 sec and a little flash burst through a soft box mounted on camera for the spider. Enjoy, Jeff

Nature Outing

2017-06-05T15:04:00.000-07:00

Five Rivers was very productive this morning.with young deer, goslings and a Blue Heron. I was thrilled to capture the Heron in flight!

Tech details: Nikon D500 w Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary Lens, ISO 2500, F7.1, Tv 1/1500 second. Enjoy, Jeff

Bleeding Hearts

2017-05-24T15:29:00.001-07:00

I shot these in our garden today. I love these flowers, their design and symmetry. Shot with a Fuji XPRO-1, Tamron 90mm 2.5 Macro lens. Tv 1/1000, F5.6, ISO 400. Handheld and manually focused. Enjoy, Jeff

BIRDING

2017-05-20T14:20:00.001-07:00

TRIED MY FIRST BIRDING TRIP THIS MORNING AT OAKWOOD CEMETERY WITH A GROUP OF BIRDERS. BEAUTIFUL DAY AND SOME NICE CRITTERS. I LEARNED THAT BIRDING IS NOT FOR ME AS IT REALLY HURT MY ARTHRITIC NECK- ALL THAT LOOKING UP IN THE TREES TO SEE SOME TINY BIRD. GEAR: NIKON D500 WOTH A SIGMA 150-600MM LENS, 1/1250 SEC, F8, ISO VARIED WITH THE LIGHT FROM 800 TO 2000. ENJOY, JEFF

Open Aperture

2017-05-16T16:20:00.000-07:00

The standard way of shooting flowers is with a narrow aperture to achieve everything in focus. Often I like to do things a little differently. Here I was looking for a shallow depth of field, focusing on just one section of these backyard flowers shot near sunset with the sun behind. I used a Fuji XPRO-1 with an old Tamron 2.5, 90mm Macro lens shot at 2.5. On an APS-C camera, this gives an effective aperture of 3.75 when shot at 2.5, lens wide open.

Shutter speed had to be fast at 1/1000 sec and ISO was 1000. All shot hand held with flowers blowing all over the place! Notice on the third image the reddish blur on the left side of the composition. That was a red flower behind the daisy that I used to contrast the yellow petals. Enjoy, Jeff

Times Square

2017-05-16T16:11:00.001-07:00

Times Square pretends endless people street photo opportunity! These were shot recently over two days using a Fuji XPRO-1 and a Fuji 18-55mm lens. Just great to engage and shoot! Enjoy, Jeff

Cardinal

2016-12-17T15:34:00.001-08:00

Finally, the elusive Cardinal! Today i was lucky in that 2 of 195 images were of the Cardinal unobstructed by branches. Shot at Five Rivers Game Farm with a Nikon D500, Sigma 150-600 C lens. Settings were 1/1250 sec, f8, ISO 800 at 550mm. Enjoy, Jeff

Special Edit

2016-10-27T15:43:00.000-07:00

I love shooting horse races. Being near Saratoga raceway, I go every summer and manage to get a Pass to the backstretch. I've been doing this for many years and gradually have realized that there is a special way to display these beautiful animals and the riders that goes beyond the ordinary photographs taken by the camera.

The majority of these photographs of been taken with the Nikon D 7200 with a sigma 100-600 mm Lens. Shutter speed and depth of field are set to try to capture the action and exposures for the proper ambient light exposure. Also, I have learned that it is best to be about 1/8 mile-1/4 mile from the starting gate. The horses are better grouped then, not bunched up yet not to spread out. Also post rain and a muddy track adds to the drama. My camera fires about 7 frames a second which helps capture the right grouping.

The magic however occurs in the editing as you can see from the original photograph followed by the specially edited photographs. All of the specially edited photographs were simply edited in my iPad using Google's wonderful program Snapseed

With Snapseed I am able to bring out details, color and dynamic range that are not available with traditional editing techniques. I use HDR mode and then the various structure and ambience modes elsewhere in the program. I play around with the sliders until I simply like the effect that I see and finish the photograph

I have printed several of these images on 16 x 24 reflective aluminum done by Bay photo. They look outstanding.

If you haven't downloaded and played around with Snapseed on your smart phone, iPad or android pads I would strongly recommend you give it a try. Photographic enhancement which for me brings out "the joy" within the image, is easily available.

Also just like we rarely if ever use silver coated tin plate photography anymore as image making progress has led us to digital imaging and more advanced, unique cameras including smartphone cameras, we are seeing a very interesting camera coming out in 2017, the pocketable Light L16 Camera with a total of 16 lenses and 52 MP! I hope to get my hands on one! Enjoy, Jeff

2016-08-06T07:46:00.001-07:00

Shot this morning at Five Rivers. My goal was to capture some bees in flight. Very challenging! Out of nowhere a Hummingbird Moth comes by and luckily I was able to capture a few decent images. Gear: Nikon D7200, Tv 1/1000 sec, F8, Auto ISO at 2500. Enjoy, Jeff
