In it’s second week out, The Help, a film that is angering some and bringing pleasure to others, took the top spot in the weekend Box Office wars with $20M. It may not seem like a lot, but a movie of this subject matter with no CGI, explosions, gunfire or gratuitous sex, holding on to the number one and 2 spots two weeks in a row is nothing to sneeze at. It may also be a indication to Hollywood that audience want to see substance.

In July 2011, Texas Ranger fan Shannon Stone reached out for a ball hit is way. Stone reached too far, fell over the railing and onto the field. The 39-year old fan died on the way to the hospital.

Today it has been announced that the Stone, a firefighter and father of a 6-year old boy, will receive a bronze statue in his honor.

“The statue, which is tentatively to be named Rangers Fans, is expected to be in place for the 2012 season. The full-size bronze statue is likely to be located outside the home plate gate of Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.”

The statue will depict Stone and his son at a Rangers game.

If that was not shocking enough, Schultz is calling for a halt on corporate donations to any and every politician, Republican/Democrat, Congressional and Presidential. The CEO wants a freeze on political donations until the government comes to a bipartisan and fair deal on the debt.

Of course the flexing of that muscle would shine a spotlight on the power and influence corporations have on politicians and politics, but it’s entirely possible that a bit of leeway is given in this case. Voices of influence calling on others of influence to loosen the belt and help the country first, is a light I would like to see more of.

The very well done prequel to the saga of Apes over Humans, has proved to be strong rebirthing of the POtA franchise. Rise took in another $27M to bring its two-week total up to $105M.

The ‘Destination’ that isn’t so ‘Final’, came in with a 5th installment and opened in 3rd place with $18M.

Cowboys & Aliens fell to 6th place taking in $7M, while ‘The Help’ took the 2nd place slot with a respectable $25M.

Then, as abruptly as it arrived, the Peacock spread its wings at 6:45am this morning and returned to the Central Park Zoo, unharmed and unchanged by its new celebrity.

There is an unfortunate problem arising in the world today, I’m talking about the reluctance of some to adopt cats that look like certain well known human beings. Take Hitler cat for example. This cat can’t find a home because it looks just like Hitler.

Conan O’Brien has found a few more cats that look like humans low on the likable chart, like the cat that looks like Snookie.

Hulu fans and subscribers are about to get a little more than they are used to when it comes to the online streaming service. Hulu will be offering its own original programing, the first of which is with the help of Morgan Spurlock, the maker of “Super Size Me.”

The very first series will be a show that follows famous people around documenting their daily lives.

The company is planing several shows to introduce a Hulu line-up to subscribers. The shows will be limited in budget, but will aim to please the wants of their online audience.

A 14-year old mother in Sao Paulo Brazil, gave birth to a baby girl. The baby was pronounced dead after being born, and the time of this writing there is no word on why the baby girl died.

The baby was sent to the mortuary and the undertaker began preparing the body for burial when the baby girl sudden began to cry. The undertaker rushed the infant to the hospital where surprised doctors placed the baby in intensive care.

UPDATE: Sadly it has been reported that the baby did not survive in intensive care.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and surmise that most people did not see ‘The Green Lantern’ because it starred ‘Ryan Reynolds.’ For some reason, Hollywood seems to think that Americans really want to watch this guy for 90 minutes, I call it the Dane Cook theory.

The rest of the American and worldwide public didn’t not go pay hard earned money to see the movie because they heard how awful it was. Take those two guesses, put them together and you get a Box Office flop. $53M opening weekend, $114M domestically and $154M internationally to date. It hasn’t even made its production cost back.

But, once again, great Hollywood minds are at work. ‘The first one didn’t have enough fight scenes, it spent too much time on earth and it wasn’t dark enough.’ Yes, I said first because they are making another one. There will be another large stinking pile of green crap starring Ryan Reynolds, and they think they have the formula that will make us pay for a sequel of a film most didn’t want to see the first time around.

Please, right your local Hollywood producer and tell them, no demand of them. No more crap!

One death is being blamed for the death of one person and the sickness of at least 58 others. Salmonella poisoning has been found in some samples of ground turkey. The poison is believed to have killed one person, sent 22 to the hospital, no information on where in the country or what brand caused the death.

Harry Potter films have always done well at the box office, but the very last film that ends the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2, has now broke the bank and joined a very exclusive club.

In its 3rd week in theaters, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, has pulled in $318.5M domestically, pushing it into the Billion mark when the $690M worldwide haul is added to the total.

After weeks and weeks of scare tactics, allowing the markets to dip and setting the stage for the downgrading of the United States credit, a deal that allows the raising of the debt ceiling is on its way to becoming signed, sealed and delivered.

After hours and days of hard work, Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, and Minority leader Mitch McConnell hammered out a deal that President Obama and John Boehner both say isn’t the best deal possible.

Final hammering, grand standing and time wasting will take place Monday before the deal is signed and approved by all three branches, beating the August 2nd deadline.

There was a battle this weekend, a little known battle between Great Britain and the United States of America. It wasn’t built up much because the two countries have a fondness for each other that goes deep. But under the civility, a nasty little competitive bug rose its head for better or worse, and for this time at least, America came out on top. Captain America that is.

When the final chapter to the Harry Potter franchise hit the theaters last weekend, it was unstoppable, with the smarter money going to Potter reigning supreme for at least another two weeks. But the smartest money knew the following weekend would usher in an old throw back super hero with the name ‘America’ in his monogram, and that would be hard to beat.

Captain America: The First Avenger saw it’s opening weekend bring in $65M to take the number one honors from Harry’s farewell. But don’t count Harry out yet, the last of its kind managed to rake in another $48M in its second weekend in theaters, bringing its two week total to $274M. And unless I miss my guess, the fascination of yet another comic book hero coming to life on the big screen, will settle, and Harry and his crew will be back on top, gracefully making its exit next weekend.

Amy Winehouse, the grammy award winning singer has lost her battle with drug and alcohol abuse today. She was found in her North London home dead from an apparent drug overdose. The singer has battled drug abuse since 2007 and has been in and out of rehab.

She was recently released from her latest stay in rehab, and booed off the stage for a drunken performance in Germany to kick off a new tour. After that performance she quickly put the full tour on hold.

Winehouse was 27 years-old.

Ouch! Not only did Shane Mosley lose badly to Mayweather Jr., then to Pacquiao, but now the man known as Sugar as lost his belts to his now ex-wife.

With the divorce now settled, Mosley’s ex can now claim ownership of three of the former champs belts, which is exactly half his former greatness.

Married and divorced in California, Mosley had to fork over half of everything he owned to ex-wife Jin, which included his championship title belts. The ex will also continue to get half of all earnings from any media created during the time of their marriage. Mosley’s last fight with Pacquiao is exempt because the fight took place after the two were legally separated.
