The web browser that Google made has entered the terrible two’s. Except, it’s not actually terrible and instead of uttering the word “NO” incessantly, Chrome is saying “yes.” Yes to a more streamlined look – if that were possible, a slightly improved color scheme, and a boost in speed, of which Google says makes the little browser that could – 3 times faster than it was yesterday. All this and a lot more comes tied by a birthday gift because the browser turns the mighty two today.

Today, we’re releasing a new stable version of Chrome that is even faster and more streamlined. Chrome is now three times faster than it was two years ago on JavaScript performance. We’ve also been working on simplifying the “chrome” of Chrome. As you can see, we took the already minimalist user interface and stripped it down a bit more to make it easier to use. We combined Chrome’s two menus into one, revisited the location of the buttons, cleaned up the treatment of the URL and the Omnibox, and adjusted the color scheme of the browser to be easier on the eyes.

Sliding back into Doc Brown’s DeLorean and setting the dial ahead by a few months, we have more in store for Chrome. As always, we’re hard at work on making Chrome even faster, and working on ways to improve graphics performance in the browser through hardware acceleration. With the Chrome Web Store, we hope to make it much easier to find and use great applications on the web. We also ratcheted up the pace of our releases so that we can get new features and improvements to everyone more quickly.

A rig sitting in 250 miles of deep water has exploded and left 13 workers in the water. Early reports are that one of the workers is hurt. The platform is not an oil drilling platform so it is not yet known if there is any oil leaking from this latest Gulf incident. The rig is said to be on fire and rescue missions are currently taking place to rescue those in the water.

It was a tough day for Victoria Azarenka at the U.S. Open. Not only was she falling far behind her opponent Gisela Dulko, but she also fell victim to a 90 degree New York day. Her agent said she was talking and is okay, but it was not yet determined why she collapsed.

What makes this special is what some are calling it’s “Shrek” like facial features. Have you been dying to be your old self again? Well look to Google to help you make it happen. The Internet giant has teamed up with Chris Milk and the band Arcade Fire to bring you the interactive experience of “The Wilderness Downtown.” Right there in your little ol browser, you can walk down the streets where you grew up, taking a look at windows you broke and the house where the first girl to break your heart used to live. You can do this all with the integrated Google Maps and music provided by the band Arcade Fire.

What would a music experience designed specifically for the modern web look like? This is a question we’ve been playing around with for the last few months. Browsers and web technologies have advanced so rapidly in the last few years that powerful experiences tailored to each unique person in real-time are now a reality.

Today we’re excited to launch a musical experience made specifically for the browser. Called “The Wilderness Downtown”, the project was created by writer/director Chris Milk with the band Arcade Fire and Google. Building this project on the web and for the browser allowed us to craft an experience that is not only personalized, but also deeply personal for each viewer. “The Wilderness Downtown” takes you down memory lane through the streets you grew up in. It’s set to Arcade Fire’s new song “We Used to Wait” off their newly released album The Suburbs (which you may be familiar with, especially if you were one of 3.7 million viewers who live-streamed Arcade Fire’s concert on YouTube earlier this month). The project was built with the latest web technologies and includes HTML5, Google Maps, an integrated drawing tool, as well as multiple browser windows that move around the screen. “The Wilderness Downtown” was inspired by recent developments in modern browsers and was built with Google Chrome in mind. I have to say, this one surprises me.  I actually thought that movie going audiences would have had enough with the whole Exorcist deal, but I was wrong.  Or, maybe there just wasn’t anything else for audiences to see, so the one new flick with an ounce of an interesting theme won out at the last minute in the ticket lines.  Yeah, I’m going with that.

This can be the only real reason The Last Exorcism came in first.  And when you look at it’s opening total it makes a little since.   The tired story with the same events that happen in every other Exorcist film may have come in first, but it did so with only a $21.3M in the collection purse.   The $.3 is what stood between over done horror and overdone shoot em’ up hip hop cool young guys in tight shirts robbing something, seen it a million times action.   Of course I’m talking about Takers. The film took in $21M on it’s opening weekend and won the hearts and minds of 2nd place.

Eat Pray Love could seem to take advantage of a weak week for openings. The Julia Roberts come back flick only managed to come in fourth behind The Expendables with $7M. But one thing can be said for Eat, Pray, Love, it has managed to stay in the top five since opening.

If you’re burning with excitement over the announcement of the pending release of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, you may want to tred lightly to see it in action, you might blow a head gasket. Thanks to a Korean site, you’ll get to see the new tablet up close and personal, matching wits with the iPad. The clip shows off the 16:10 screen size against the iPad. You’ll also get to witness the smooth Froyo UI showing off the front-facing camera which is dedicated to video calling for a little WCDMA 3G, 802.11n WiFi, action.

There is also a look at the expandable SDHC memory slot and DMB TV tuner. I have to say, this thing looks pretty darn good. Not quite sure about the size however. Too big to be a carry around phone, too small to be a real match to the iPad. But we shall see when it becomes official in September.

Jon Stewart stayed on the war path with those who have gone to war with an entire religion. Where I can hear things like “Why Don’t We Try Not Giving A F*^k,” his retort to the banality buried in the constant sole searching for what the ‘Jihadist think’ by talking heads on TV.

And then, just when I’m beginning to feel okay, Aasif Mandvi goes to Tennessee, where he speaks to a dunce of epic proportions. She is gathering her fellow citizens to oppose the building of a new Mosque by a Islamic center that has been there for 30 years. The current center is too small and needs to expand, but dunce extraordinaire opposes it because Muslims don’t allow “pork on their plates”.

A few days ago, a Chinese diplomat (may have been Japanese) said Americans are “simple minded” …….. Some Americans where outraged by this. Then they packed up their signs, went out, and protested someones religion.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is investigating the woman you see in this because for some reason she thought it appropriate to throw Lola the cat in a trash bin, after petting the cat. The owners found the cat the next day after hearing muffled cries coming from inside the bin. The woman was caught on England’s famous surveillance camera’s. Since being identified, the wacked out woman has had guards posted at her home because of the amount of outraged and angry citizens.

Investigators plan to talk to her to find out just what in the hell is wrong with her. Although, I do have one question. Why don’t people get outraged when a human suffers this sort of cruelty or worse by the hands of another human?

It’s so incredibly sad and pathetic that each week in the year 2010, another group is singled out to hate. Race, sexual preference and now religion are all we in America can talk about these days, it is absolutely pathetic.

Again, this is one of those times that I am completely happy to have Stephen Colbert around to make me laugh about it, because it’s so utterly mind numbing and grotesque, that making fun of the over abundance of ignorance is about the only way to keep from going crazy.

Pay attention to Stephens look at the Manhattan anti-Mosque rally which saw a Black man get harassed because he was Black and there. He didn’t have the decency to show up like the other Black people, White. Very funny!!!

Dateline Venice Beach California, August 22nd, 2010. The Venice boardwalk took a stand for equality this past weekend when women and men gathered to protest the inequality in the law that states a man can go topless, but a woman can’t.

Oddly enough, a week before I heard this was going to take place, my wife and I had a discussion on the very issue, brought up due to a pink, sweaty, shirtless guy jogging down the street we were driving. I’ve never thought it was fair that a man can do it but a woman cannot. Not from a perverted point of few, although that would seem natural since I am a man. No, I would much rather the law state that no one, no one be allowed to walk around in public with their shirt off.
Why would I want that? Because of the pink, sweaty, shirtless guy jogging down the street.

If a woman can be fined, jailed or kicked off a beach because she is not wearing a top, why shouldn’t a man suffer the same, everywhere? Then consider this fact. There is an extremely high majority of men and women you really don’t want to see with their shirts off. Give them the license and things well get ugly fast.

That’s is exactly what this protest that saw a few hundred gathered was all about. Roughly 50 men wore Bikini tops supplied by the organizers to show solidarity with the women who wore taped cross’s across their nipples. The women want the law changed, changed in the direction that my wife and I agreed about a week ago. Either everyone can go topless, or no one can.

It didn’t shatter any Box Office records, but The Expendables still managed to hang onto the number one spot for a second straight box office weekend.  The Expendables hauled in another $16M to bring it’s two week total to $64M during a weekend that saw nothing, absolutely nothing interesting open up and challenge it.

That is of course if you unless you’re the one that was looking forward to Vampires Suck.   You and a few others managed to bring this one into the number two slot, knocking Julia Roberts from her previous 2spot to number 3.   Eat Pray Love came in 3rd with only $12M more in the kitty, bringing it’s total to $47M.

Hollywood romance, or lack there of can be quite amusing sometimes. Here’s two people that I would never put together outside of some mutually attended awards show. But in fact, in the early 90′s, the two went out on a date during the first season of friends. Jon brings it up and they discuss the fact that she brought a bunch of her friends with her. Awkward.

But this is actually the second coming of the G2 to be released in the states under the T-Mobile logo like it’s older brother, the one who kicked it all off, the G1. iPad Gmail users should be pleasantly surprised the next time Gmail is opened on the iPad. Google promised that they would continually bring the updates, and it looks as though they are living up to the promise. The update brings ‘Stacked Cards’ to the interface. Now selected conversations from the toolbar will be stacked on the right side of the screen in useful little cards, making keeping track of who you’re emailing a lot less confusing on the iPad. In fact, I like the look and idea so much that I hope they bring it to the desktop version.

Note to anyone living outside of the United States. It’s not yet available for you. Sorry.

In April 2009, we announced a new version of Gmail for mobile for iOS and Android. Among the improvements was a complete redesign of the web application’s underlying code, which allows us to more rapidly develop and release new features that users have been asking for, as explained in our first post. Today’s topic for the The Iterative Web App, a series where we continue to release features for Gmail for mobile, is the Stacked Cards Interface on the iPad.

When we announced our new interface for Gmail on the iPad, we requested feedback on how we could improve this experience for tablet devices. In June, we responded with a new compose screen. Today, we’re addressing the top feedback by launching a new “stacked card” interface for selecting and managing multiple conversations.

In the past, performing actions on selected conversations was awkward. There were two similar toolbars on the screen: one on the bottom left and the other on the top right. The former affected the selected conversations, while the latter affected the currently open conversation. Since the toolbars’ buttons looked similar, it was easy to mistakenly use the wrong toolbar. Sound confusing? It was.

In the new interface, selected conversations are displayed stacked on the right panel for easy organizing, archiving or deleting. The second toolbar is gone so it’s always clear which conversations you’re working with.

This new interface has also been an opportunity for our team to experiment with CSS3 transitions, which give mobile web applications a similar look and feel to native applications. More details on the implementation are posted on the code blog.

But for what it’s worth, the whole ‘will he/won’t he’ thing with Brett Favre is tired and takes a bit of the like off. Thanks to Brett and the sports media, once again we will have to endure announcers babbling on and on about this latest off season exploit during every Viking game. So with a heavy heart, it’s great to see someone outside of the sports world, actually get angry with Brett and tell it like it is.

Although with Stephens shocking announcement, we now have to wonder if Oprah is really retiring from her daytime television show.

40 people where injured in Spain when yet another type of ‘running with the bulls’ turned ugly yet again. The bull jumped into the crowd and injured 40 people, goring one man in the back seriously injuring him. The bull was finally subdued, but not before creating another highlight reel involving humans trying to match wits with an angry bull.

Those looking forward to running a little Blackberry OS6 action on their anticipated Blackpad coming this year, might be in for a bit of a surprise. It looks like the fruits of RIM’s dip into QNX Software Systems is rearing it’s head if the reports are true. Bloomberg says that RIM will be offering up it’s Blackberry connected tablet not with a larger OS6 running, but with software built by QNX. RIM is working desperately to keep up with the iPad and every other tablet introduced and still waiting to be introduced.

So what kind of OS could we expect from a company that makes software for BMW and Caterpillar Inc? That remains to be seen, but suddenly, don’t you really, really want to see it?
