Note On Circadia Art Centre: Communal Art Center for performances, art shows and education. Has seen some fucked moments in the past like any newsprung project but is worthy of the support of the community, in our smaller art and performing circles as well as the Portland Community at large. Due to a fire dept. conflict they are out 2 months rent and need to drum up 3K to keep the building open so we all have the continued freedom to have experimental shows not always supported by more established venues.

Spring Projects

There are two film projects on the table this month. I've been doubling as a location sound mixer for both. The first, Meat Market, has been shot and is in video post production. Currently I'm just waiting for that part to be finished so we can go in and do the audio post mix. This really has been a great project. Shot on a RED camera, this will have great production quality to it and the script and acting looked great on location.

The other is a super short reel project. We'll do the shoot at the end of the month and then I'll be handling the all the post production cuts in the Morphed Productions studio. Already I've pulled Ben Darwish into the studio to track a piano piece that will accompany dialogues between the two actors in the scene. Darwish really nailed it. We tracked three takes in an hour and it was ready to hit the edit bay.

Operation: Enduring Economic Hardship

No doubt, times have become difficult in this current economic downturn. We may find more time on our hands than we are comfortable with. Winter being here reinforces that yearly cycle of studio cave dwelling, with a chance to refocus towards the coming seasons. Many of us here in the Northwest choose to utilize those spaces as our creative juices are compressed to quartz for the coming sun. From some other time...

Passion of the Tribe by Morphed Productions

My recent winter/recession tech project was to install XP x64 on the studio tower machine. Knowing there was all this available power not being used by my old 32 bit OS always had me wondering what I could really be capable of on this machine. It was well worth the effort.

Currently I am running 2 dual Opteron processors on an Asus k8n-dl board, for quad processing. I moved my streaming audio library onto a SATA drive and record drive on it's own IDE (I'll go SATA for this later). The performance and stability is quite noticeable. Running an Ableton session the other day, had the CPU meter in Ableton running smooth at 93-97%...!!! I kept waiting for hiccup or crash, but solid as a rock. Latency is dirt low.

XP took the install of Pro Tools 8 without a hitch. Once I got up an running, I set all preference settings to the most demanding, low latency, high CPU hit I could. The hardware buffer ended up comfortable at 512 for recording and over-dubbing and the monitor latency is ALMOST INEXISTENT!

I got to tooling around with the above audio project and in hardly any time rapped up the "Passion" track . Mixdown was smooth considering I was able to do all the pre-production at 96k 24 bit. Mastering was such a blast, it just came right out....certainly good enough for the few hours I put into it. The hardest part was learning the instrument parts...which is exactly what I like to hear in a computer based music production environment.

It's like a reverse wet willy.

The Synchronicity Frequency site page on Morphed Productions is almost finished. In the meantime, I thought I'd post these couple of tracks, as a sneak listener to the upcoming release by Synchronicity Frequency, Decapitation Renovation.

The track is titled Flek, and opens with a field recording taken as the mountain awakes with the morning sun. The birds, the bugs and the trees create a sound collage difficult to emulate and best conveyed through direct capture of that moment, a true picture of sound. The classic struggle between nature and man ensues and leads us into the melodic phrase of the track, and before you know it.....d-rop! Here comes the cut. Tweaked, glitched, chopped and consantly unfolding.

Enjoy this preview into the caverns of the human experience.

And, as an added bonus, here is the remaster and remix of Sensory Journey, originally released in 2006. This track will be featured on body mod and performance DVD being produced by Operafication and is not available on the re-release of the self titled Synchronicity Frequency album due out this fall. Ms. Hilary will vocalize the opera-tics for the final DVD Operafication version. I am so looking forward to this production!

We drew lines in the sand only to have the boundaries erased by waves of water....

We will be going through some 33 hours of recordings, mutations and collaborations to bring you some of the sounds we made while on this 9 day trip to the beautiful mountains of the North Umpqua River.

The Underscore Orkestra Live at The Someday Lounge

My good friend Peter Archer and company, in manifestation as The Underscore Orkestra. Peter is a rather versatile artist, musician and collaborator. It's always a pleasure to do gigs with this bunch.

Most things were actually on DI, which has its pros and cons. On one hand, we don't get open mic squealing and feedback nearly as much, but then again, it's difficult to control the nature of sound of a particular instrument as the engineer is at the mercy of the pickup or contact mic placed inside the instrument. Nonetheless, I think we put together a pretty good live mix of these guys. Click the title and give the gypsies some hit counts on there site.

This would be the second time I've ran sound for this bunch at The Someday. They are a really great crew to work with, and they really can throw live show. From an engineering perspective, the world bands and eclectic ensembles are definitely most enjoyable to myself. The array of percussion was certainly a mic experience, especially with only 16 channels for FOH. I dream of 24 channels after a show like this.

Hive ran at The Someday Lounge on Sunday and I captured a few minutes of the evening. This might just become a habit, as I find many events I happen to be running sound for enjoyable, technically and/or entertaining. This is a pretty straight forward setup, capturing a camera feed and a matrix of the room and board mix, simultaneously, so post is a zip, sound is great, vid is decent. My focus on these shows is always the audio, but being able to supply a basic visual representation on the cheap that is enjoyable later is just a bonus to the whole event and the artists.

Morphed Productions is proud to announce it's 3rd podcast release, Morphcast #2: Spectrums Redefined. Delivered by the narrative stylings of Noah Mickens, we are walked through a labyrinthe of music and sounds produced at the MP studio, offering up the razor's edge of the sub-underground audio spectrum, diversity and multimedia cross-platforms to any appreciator of exquisite experiments of audio explorations and visual medias both post produced or performed live.

Previous Morphcasts have been delivered as mp3 or enhanced AAC, but this time around we decided to go by way of video podcast. We feel this format is the most straightforward for the end-user to experience our podcasts on not only iPODs or PC, but video capable internet phones and mobile devices. And though Morphed Productions is purely focused on custom music and sound production, we think you'll enjoy the video/photo colliages that accompany our podcast. Accompanying imagery will be from performances, projects and our own digital manipulations, headed by sound designer and visual artitst extraordinaire, Jason Cesarz, aka noyouyesme.

We do music production and sound design here at Morphed Studios, though some of us are visual arists as well we are by no means film producers. This is where you come in!

So, you think you can do it better? We do too.

In this project, anything goes for visuals you want to employ. Maybe you want to actually film 'actors' or supply real footage, or maybe it's graphics animation or digital imaging you create, it's totally up to you. A/V Remixes are encouraged as well. You download the audio from our site, produce your version and POST TO THIS BLOG THREAD.

WHY?

The direction of the piece became more apparent during production as a style or genre of storytelling we decided to dub, 'Reality Horror', a slightly comedic, overblown realization of the often insane world we live in. Since we are not cinematographers we decided to offer it to the video community to see what you all could do with it. Ultimately the point here is to provide an open and creative platform with less than commercial aspirations in its outcome, but with all the elements of professional production, on a topic that many of us are having to restle with more and more as the current socio-political world stage intensifies. In the process, all involved will help to create an environment for others to witness not only all of our skills, but our processing and understanding of the world around us, as a human collective of minds and ideas.

We will stream the original trailer live from The Someday Lounge in Portland on October 28th, 2008, for an event called "IT", over a live a/v stream and again in a few months after a 'best of' has been collected. Ultimately the point here is to provide an open and creative platform with less than commercial aspirations in its outcome, but with all the elements of professional production, on a topic that many of us are having to restle with more and more as the current socio-political world stage intensifies.
