Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger: Episode 4 Review

THOUGHTS

Before this episode I wasn’t really sure if I liked Joe, mainly because we hadn’t seen much from him. This episode really gave a lot of character to Joe, showing that he’s dedicated and focused to his swordsmanship compared to the other four. We still don’t know why Joe is so committed to his swordsmanship and I really like that there’s some element of mystery about that. I’m sure this’ll be revisited in a future episode and Joe’s character will continue to develop.

It was also great to see more of Ahim in this episode. She has been one of my favourite characters since the first episode when she called civilians ‘commoners’ and I’m looking forward to seeing some of her back story.

I enjoyed the villains a little more in this episode because they had more than one short scene. However, I still can’t remember all their names. I know Waruzu Giru and Barizorg but I can’t remember the other two. I’m sure this’ll change over the course of the series as we see more of their characters and individuality.

GokaiBlue’s ‘Blue Splash’ attack was one of the best finishing moves I’ve seen and was an interesting twist on the usual Final Wave. I wonder if they’ll do similar versions for other Rangers. It would be easy for a red version since most element-powered Red Rangers have the power of flames. It might be a little more difficult with others where elements can vary.

I also need to mention the phenomenal soundtrack for this series. My favourite so far is from the scene where Joe trained in the forest at night. I’ve heard this track played in previous episodes and it has a real ‘pirate-y’ feel to it. Another one of my favourites is played during the first fight between GokaiBlue and Zodomas, which is a slower instrumental version of the opening theme. This track was also played in Episode 1 during the Gokaiger’s first Final Wave. I can’t wait for the OST to come out in the coming months to hear these epic tracks in full.

GRADE

This episode was an excellent focus for Joe and got me to like him. While this episode wasn’t as good as the last, I give this episode a 4/5

This episode wouldn’t be hard to adapt since the episode is mainly focused on Blue rather than a previous Sentai team. The Gokaigers transform into Gekiranger and Dekaranger which were both covered by Power Rangers so again, it wouldn’t be hard.

Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger: Episode 3 Review

THOUGHTS

When I first heard that Magiranger was going to be the first past team focused on I was ecstatic. Magiranger was my first season of Sentai that I watched all the through so I was excited to see the characters again. I was slightly disappointed that only Kai (Magi Red) was returning, but this is only Episode 3 so there are chances of the others returning in future episodes.

After the opening sequence we hear the episode title along with a Magiranger spell attached onto the end: ~Maagi Magi Go Gokai ~. I really like that they’re using naming conventions during these past season focus episodes and I hope they continue this trend in the future.

The moment where we first see Kai is perfect; we hear his voice echoing throughout the forest first and then the familiar background music kicks in. The Magiranger background music really added to the scene, giving it a lot more impact.

The interaction between Marvellous and Don was done excellently because it showed both Marvellous’ ingenuity and Don’s fearfulness. I also really like that Kai was used to develop Don’s character and show him that he has courage, rather than just being a cameo.

One complaint I do have is the transforming effect. In previous episodes and later in this one, the transformation effect has been similar to effect from the original series. However, this episode featured the team’s symbol coming out of the Mobirates and merging with the Ranger. I’m not sure why they have two different effects, but I much prefer the original effect rather than the symbol effect. I loved the homage to the Magiranger henshin sequence, especially because it was accompanied by more background music from Magiranger. This is another trend I hope will continue with future episodes. I was also really glad that the Gokai-Magirangers used their individual weapons and attacks to show off the team of the week’sabilities.

While I’m not a big fan of Magi GokaiOh, I did enjoy the mecha battle. Unfortunately, I was slightly disappointed with the final attack. After Magi Dragon trapped Salamandam with the Magiranger insignia I was expecting some sort of final attack like Magi Dragon to use fire or maybe Magi GokaiOh to fly towards him with swords drawn. Instead, Salamandam was defeated just by being trapped by the Magiranger insignia. I didn’t just think that it was impressive enough to be a final attack.

RANDOM NOTES

The crash landing feels very reminiscent of Jetman where Jet Garuda crash lands in a similar fashion. It’s probably just a coincidence but it’s just something I thought of.

Another thing I thought of while watching this: How does Luka get up and down from Gokai Galleon’s mast? It’s not really a big deal, but still, I thought about it.

GRADE

As usual, the fights were fantastic and I really enjoyed the interaction between the characters. It was great to see Kai back and I’d really love to see him with some of the other Magirangers in future episodes.
Overall, I give this episode a 4/5.

When, or if this gets adapted, I would think that they'd reshoot the scene with Big One and White Swan. It would probably be best to only show new Rangers if they were focused on the episode (like this episode focused on Magiranger), rather than confusing the audience with cameos from unknown teams.

Power Rangers Samurai Premieres!! What Did You Think?

It's been a long time coming and finally we got to see the Premiere of Power Rangers Samurai!

For me, this was not just the beginning of a season of Power Rangers, but it was more the premiere of the Resurrection of the Power Rangers. Saban taking back what was rightfully his and releasing the series from its Disney Prison. I hope and still do, that this was enough to bring fans back to the series or new fans. Hell! It was anough for me to start this blog, once I heard MMPR v2 was being cancelled. What a terrible few months that was!

I can't, on this blog or anywhere, come out here and say "That sucked!" or "That rocked!"giving it my disgust or happy rants. Instead, I will speak only for this episode and its meaning to the ressurrection of the Power Rangers.

I loved every freaking minute of it! From the Opening theme mixed with a sweet bassline of the Original Theme; to the Rita Repulsa inspired music aboard Master Xandred's ship! The Villains I loved as well, hoping to see a lot more moments like those aboard his ship. Dayu's voice left something to be desired, but I'm sure Kate Elliot will play into her role well over time.

The Rangers seem to work well together in human and Ranger form. Their rapport with each other is fantastic, this is an great cast! So far the Shinkenger footage is utlized wonderfully. and hinestly I like the idea of them adapting straight from Shinkenger, I jutst do!

The Megazord battle was very well done in conjunction with the Mega Suit scenes and the intensity of the re-imagined finisher is epic! Not to mention the new HD look and feel of the Rangers on Nick.

All in all, it was everything I expected. Sadly, this episode was full of the clips we had already seen over the past week. This leaves me waiting for next Sunday anxiously!

IGN Reports, Paul Schrier "Bulk" Returns to Power Rangers!!!

Ok How Cool is this news?!?! WOW! So excited, read the IGN article and check out the clip below where we get a first look at Felix Ryan's "Spike" and the fan-favorite Bulk's return to Power Rangers!!!!

"When Power Rangers: Samurai premieres on Nickelodeon next week, a very familiar face to longtime Power Rangers fans will be present – someone who was there for the very first episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers back in 1993.

That person is Paul Schrier, who will be reprising his role as Bulk on Power Rangers: Samurai. Schrier was a longtime cast member of the franchise, appearing in both the Power Rangers feature films and throughout the first several seasons and incarnations of the TV series. Schrier last played Bulk in 2002, when he made a guest appearance on Power Rangers: Wild Force. In addition, Schrier directed episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy and Power Rangers: Turbo.

Schrier will appear in the premiere episode of Samurai -- airing on Monday, February 7th at 8pm on Nickelodeon -- and then make guest appearances throughout the series.

Nick Has Released A New Press Release about Power Rangers Samurai,

There's some new info on how Nick will support the show, A tiny bit of Character Bio, Takeru is now Ji, PRS Scheduled for SUN @ Noon, and Take a look at the bio for the "premiere" episode which sounds more like the second episode to me.

Here are some of the important highlights:

Nickelodeon, the number-one entertainment brand for kids, introduces a new generation of kids to the legendary Power Rangers franchise with the prime-time premiere of Power Rangers Samurai, on Monday, Feb. 7, at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT).

Combining comedy with action-filled storylines, the all-new half-hour series features a new cast of Rangers and never-before-seen villains, as well as high-octane action, martial arts and advanced special effects. From SCG Power Rangers LLC, an affiliate of Saban Brands, the long-running hit kids’ TV phenomenon, now heading into its 19th season, is helmed by Haim Saban, who created and produced the original “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” series in 1993. Following the premiere, the show will air regularly Sundays at noon (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon, with encores Saturdays at noon on Nickelodeon and Fridays from 8 to 9 p.m. (ET) on Nicktoons.

“We are very excited to introduce this fun and iconic property, which has spanned over two decades, to a whole new generation of kids,” said Pete Danielsen, Executive Vice President, Programming, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group. “This new season of Power Ranger Samurai will feature all new heroes, villains and special effects while keeping the core messages of friendship, teamwork and empowerment that the series has always exhibited.”

Power Rangers Samurai follows a new generation of five Rangers who must master the ancient Samurai Symbols of Power which give them control over the elements of Fire, Water, Sky, Forest and Earth. Under the guidance of their all-knowing Samurai mentor, Ji, and with the aid of their devoted animal Zords (Lion, Dragon, Ape, Turtle and Bear), they battle to save Earth from the dark forces of the Netherworld led by the evil Master Xandred.

The Samurai Power Rangers are: Jayden (Alex Heartman), the Red Ranger and the team’s leader; Mia (Erika Fong), the Pink Ranger who is the confident and caring “big sister” of the Rangers; Kevin (Najee De-Tiege), the Blue Ranger, is a great swordsman who lives by the code of the Rangers; Emily (Brittany Pirtle), the Yellow Ranger, is the youngest but most optimistic of the group; and Mike (Hector David), the Green Ranger, who is a bit of a rebel and would rather be destroying video monsters than real ones.

In the action-packed premiere episode, “The Team Unites,” after Mike can’t anticipate an attack like Kevin and Jayden, he grows frustrated and takes a break from training to meet up with old friends. But when a long-armed monster named Rofer attacks, Mike unsuccessfully attempts to fight him alone, and his friends are injured. Jayden and Mentor explain the hard truth that Samurai Rangers must stay away from family and friends in order to protect them from the dangers that are involved with being a Ranger. Inspired, Mike begins to take his role and training as a Samurai Ranger more seriously. With Jayden’s help, Mike uses his training and creativity to anticipate Rofer’s moves and defeats him.

The premiere of Power Rangers Samurai will simulcast in full on Nick Mobile, and post-premiere, a dedicated show category will be available through Nickelodeon’s video-on-demand partners. In support of the show launch, Nick.com will feature a new Power Rangers Samurai-themed Game of the Week beginning Thursday, Feb. 3, where players battle villains as his or her favorite Power Ranger. The site will also include a dedicated show page featuring videos, photo galleries, a quiz, a villain flipbook, message boards, as well as cast and character bios.

The Song seems to be a "cover" of the original MMPR theme song from 1993. They've simply changed, "Mighty Morphin" slightly and added:Rangers Together, Samurai Forever.
What Do You Think of the New Theme?Personally, I like it so far. It does seem rather lazy for the theme to be a basic carbon copy, but I do enjoy the nostalgia of the original theme tying in with its creator being back at the helm. Keep in mind this is not confirmed just yet.
