This is the first email from them for the season! Watch for more news as things become known!

Auckland Track Cycling
Friday Night Racing 2008/2009
Newsletter #1

The Track Racing Committee invites you to another great programme of Friday Night Racing at Manukau Velodrome. The programme runs from 14th November 2008 to 20th February 2009 with a short break at Christmas/New Year and for Auckland Champs.

The preliminary list of dates for the season is as follows.

Friday 14th November
Friday 21st November
Friday 28th November
Friday 5th December
Friday 12th December
Friday 19th December
Friday 9th January
Friday 16th January
Friday 23rd January
Friday 13th February
Friday 20th February

The dates for Auckland Champs need to be confirmed but will be in the period around late January/early February. Once the dates for Champs are decided we will update the Friday Night Racing calendar as required.

The National Track Championships will run from Monday 2nd March – Saturday 7th March 2009 in Invercargill.

Recent happenings
Due to the New Zealand track team’s exceptional performances at the Olympics and some good promotion locally, the interest in track cycling at school level has been overwhelming. Already the entire stock of hire bikes have been let out for the season meaning there will be some good Under 17 racing developing over the course of the season. For anyone with a spare track bike in the garage, now might be the time to consider hiring it out for the season or selling it outright to a keen new rider.

Grades/Number of races
As usual, we will be running racing for 5 grades comprising Under 17 Girls, Under 17 Boys, B-Grade, A-Grade and Women. Each grade will get four races a night scheduled in the program, and some evenings will have an additional feature race for one grade. Each grade requires a minimum of 5 riders entered to run its own grade for the evening– for grades with less than 5 riders entered they will be amalgamated with one of the other grades and the programme will be revised accordingly.

Sign on/Entry fees
Sign on starts at 6.30pm, with racing commencing at 7pm. Entry fees are unchanged from last season - $5 for Under 17 grades, and $10 for all others.

Prize Money
Prize Money is also unchanged, and depending on rider numbers, generally the first three places will be paid out for each final event to the sum of $8, $5, $3 for first, second and third place respectively for Under 17 grades, and $15, $10, $5 respectively for all other grades. Number of riders entered in the grade has an effect on how many places are paid out. Seven riders are required for prize money to be paid down to third - if there is only 5-6 riders prize money will be paid for first and second places only.

Officials
As with many sports, we rely heavily on volunteers and once again we look forward to introducing friends, family and supporters to the excitement of helping out as an official in the center of the track. We have an enthusiastic core group of officials willing to coach newcomers on judging and other jobs and it adds an extra level of entertainment to your evening.

Weather
As the velodrome is outdoors it is at the mercy of the weather. If bad weather requires that the racing be called off on a Friday night, it will be postponed two days to Sunday afternoon at 3pm and will run the same programme.

Auckland Track Cycling
In addition to the Friday Night Racing, Counties Manukau will be running racing on Wednesday nights and Cycling Auckland will be running a development programme for schools and clubs on Saturday Mornings.
Over the course of the season we may also see the long-rumoured track club come into being. We look forward to a range of racing opportunities for Auckland track cyclists, and an integrated and constructive track community focused on providing the best it can for our riders.

Contacts - for dodgy weather!
To check on postponement due to weather, or for other Friday Night Racing enquiries, please contact one of the following.

Brett Slater 021 223 3312
Peter Alexander 021 235 2522

Good luck from Vickie Burr (& Q)

Hi to all my friends at Morrinsville Club

Just a quick note to wish all Morrinsville riders a great time away at Nationals in Wanganui and hope that you all achieve the goals that you have set.

I would have loved to have been there but as fortune has it my belly is getting a little bit too big for my cycling tops now and there is now way I'd fit my skin suit. It is that time to dust off the track bike in the readiness of a new summer season! If you have never ridden track it could be something worth thinking about. Morrinsville Wheelers have a few track bikes to lend, or talk to Rex & Mark at Kaimai Cycles for decent advice. Events that you can ride include racing at Te Awamutu, Rotorua, Auckland or further a field if you wish to travel... however, in previous seasons Auckland on Friday Nights are quite good (large fields to contend with).

If you are a junior rider track racing gives you a number of bike handling skills that help you on the road as well... Something to think about!!

To race at the NZ National Track Championships riders must be selected to represent the Waikato Bay of Plenty Centre. Selections are generally made as a result of the WBOP Championships & after watching riders throughout the track season (i.e. at Auckland & Te Awamutu club nights)... At nationals riders are expected to wear Official Centre Clothing.

Nationals Dates: March 2nd-March 7th 2009

Location: ILT Velodrome in Invercargill.

This an indication of the types of events riders can enter and how many from WBOP centre can race. Where a + is mentioned indicates there are qualification times which may allow more riders if the qualification time is met. This is a guideline only - ask WBOP selectors for verification.

Senior Men:
Kilo 2 +
Sprint unlimited
4000m pursuit 2 +
15000m scratch 5
points race 4
team pursuit (2 teams of 4 + one junior team)
team sprint (2 teams of 3)
open kerrin 6
Madison (2 teams of 2)
Omnium 2

Women:
500m time trial 3
3000m pursuit 2+
sprint unlimited
scratch race 4
points race 4
kerrin 6
team sprint (2 teams of 2)

U19 Men:kilo 2 +
3000m pursuit 2 +
sprint unlimited
points race 3
scratch race 3
team sprint (2 teams of 2)

U19 Women:

500m time trial 3
2000m individual pursuit 2 +
sprint unlimited
points race 4
scratch race 4

Masters Men: Masters Men are divided into two categories, Masters 1 (Masters 1&2 road) & Masters 2 (Masters 3 & above road).
points race
3000m pursuit
scratch races

U17 Boys:
sprint unlimited
500m time trial 3 +
2000m pursuit 3
500m scratch 6
points race 2
team sprint (2 teams of 3)

U17 girls:
sprint unlimited
500m time trial 3 +
2000m pursuit 3
points race 2

Under 15 girls & boys have events (at the time of writing we are not certain how many can enter)

U15 Girls:
500m time trial
5km points race
derby
U15 Boys:
500m time trial
8km points race
derby

Accommodation near Morrinsville

At Morrinsville Wheelers we welcome riders from other districts to ride with us. Highlights have included the successful hosting of many club events and opens, the increased interest in the twilight series, the number of junior members and the accomplishments by members at the national stage.

This year we have organised many events. These include the following:

Waikato BOP 40km time trial hosted on behalf of the centre
Club fun ride based at Mangateparu
Kaimai Cycles Invitation race held at Kiwitahi
The club open over two days (Bill & Hazel Summers Memorial Event)
The VeloSport Bev May Women’s Tour (record 85 entries)

Riders and supporters from outside the club have remarked on several occasions that they enjoy the manner in which the club organises and runs such events. This is testament to the efforts of the many volunteers that provide marshalling, STMS and administration. Without this support we would not be able to run these events – it should be noted that any income left over from these activities form the major part of our fundraising efforts throughout the year. In particular I would like to acknowledge the support of the Morrinsville Police who ensured the smooth running of the Morrinsville Open and the Women’s Tour.

Of course not all riders participate in these larger events. They are still catered for with the many club races that are scheduled throughout the year. These cannot take place without the efforts of a core team of organisers led by Bev and Dave May.

The Twilight Series which runs during the course of Daylight Savings has proved extremely popular this year. The largest number of riders attending on one night was 60 and in total 107 riders participated throughout the series. Of particular note was the number of junior riders, this is encouraging for the future of the club and the sport. It would be great if more of these riders could be convinced to race throughout the year.

Several accolades at national level have been achieved by club members this year, these I have listed below:

Tim Bennett - silver medal in the Elite Men’s Points Race at the 2007 Track Cycling Nationals in Invercargill.
Sarah Williams - Silver medals in the U17 girls sprint and 500m time trial at the 2007 Track Cycling Nationals in Invercargill.
Tom Scott – Gold medal in the Hand Cycle time trial at the Club Road Nationals at Auckland.
Vaughn Madsen – Silver medal in the Masters 1 time trial at the Club Road Nationals at Auckland.
Tom Scott and Barry Hutchinson - Gold and silver medal respectively in the hand cycle road race at the Club Road Nationals at Auckland.
Eliot Crowther – Outstanding achievement in winning the gold medal in the U23 men road race at the Club Road Nationals at Auckland, finishing over three minutes ahead of second place.

Special thanks must be made to the sponsors of the club in general and of events throughout the year. Our main sponsor is Kaimai Cycles and their support both through mentoring and financial assistance is much appreciated. Other sponsors of the club are Daddios Pizza, RD1, Te Aroha Scrap Metal, AgCentral and Fergusson Green Valuers. The VeloSport Bev May Women’s Tour is assisted by VeloSport, EnduranceSport and Ultimo Clothing who are all valued partners in this event.

The velodrome project is about half way in reaching the funding required to complete. Much of the planning associated with this project is due to the work of club captain Mark May who has been busy approaching construction companies, local council, grant agencies and potential sponsors with a view to getting this off the ground. We have had funding through trust grants and projects such as the cookbook, fun ride and other event proceeds.

The website continues to be a major gateway into the club. We have had comments from all over the country on the professionalism and up-to-date nature of this website. It enables the club to have a “shop window” open 24/7 throughout the year.

In conclusion I would like to thank the club committee for their efforts throughout the year, your contribution is appreciated.

Quentin Ginever
7 April 2008

Treasurers Report - Thank you to Matthew Luckie for your efforts as Treasurer. Matthew went through balance Sheet - he has done a thorough job and we appreciate that.

Please pay money as it is due for registrations, events etc. Money will not be held for you in credit.

Please sign appropriate forms and hand them to treasurer when you register (our new club membership form is working well).

Election of Officers:

Patron: Rex Thorley & Jill Law (Kaimai Cycles)

President: Quentin Ginever

Vice President: Shane Robinson

Secretary: Bev May

Treasurer: Matthew Luckie

Committee: Dave May, Mark May, Roz Reekie-May, Sandra Ginever, Cindy Murrell, Katheryn Stevenson, Terry Semmens, Wayne or Mary Aberhart, Colleen Bennett.

Club Captains: Mark May & Rex Thorley

Club Handicapper: Bev May.
