FDA Report Says 400 Shades of Lipstick Contain Lead

With the news that a woman died recently from an allergic reaction to her hair extensions,the awareness of health over beauty is on the rise more than ever…which makes this latest news brief super disturbing. The FDA recently did a report claiming that 400 shades of popular lipsticks contain lead.

The FDA maintains that lead in lipstick is not a cause for major panic, but the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, who has been pushing the government to set lead levels in lipstick for years, makes the point that lead builds up overtime. Mark Mitchell, co-chairman of the Environmental Health Task Force for the National Medical Association, said via The Washington Post:

“Lead builds in the body over time, and lead-containing lipstick applied several times a day, every day, can add up to significant exposure levels.”

Kim Kardashian goes natural for Allure Magazine

In the summer of 2011, Kim Kardashian married basketball player Kris Humphries. Seventy-two days later, she made headlines when she filed for divorce.

While chatting with Allure, the reality star was prepared with questions for herself about her life and her future:

"Do I want kids of my own? Absolutely. But I don't know if that's what's meant for me. Maybe I'll just work, work, work, and not think about it."

"Is it tough to watch [the show]? Yeah. Tough to see an unhappy time in your life."

"Do I think there are more haters than before? Not really. But I think this has given them a platform to have a louder voice."

"Will I be more private of a person? Am I more guarded? Absolutely," she says. "But, also, I'm a firm believer that my show is who I am."

People [think] because you film your life on a reality show, you live everything for the cameras. But we all have limits," says Kardashian. "My mom has no limits. We need someone, right, to have no limits? That's my mom."

As for Kardashian's limits, they are evolving. There was a time when she thought she wanted an ongoing record of her marriage for posterity.

"When I saw Khloé and Lamar get married—and they had their wedding on TV—I thought, Oh, my gosh, that's so exciting! That's what I want! If you were to ask me now, that's not what I want.

Hairstylist Serge Normant (above) curled Kardashian's hair with a one-inch curling iron to give it random waves. Then he smoothed on a dry oil for a damp-looking sheen and dabbed pomade near her roots to add weight and texture.

If Kardashian has regrets about sharing so much of her personal life on camera, she doesn't dwell on them.

Still, she says, the experience "definitely made me want to be more private with my relationship, whenever I choose to get into one again. I'm not ready, but when that time comes, I'll be more cautious about who I let my world open up to."

Instead of her signature smoky eyes, piles of lashes and layers of lip gloss, Kardashian’s skin appears dewy and nearly makeup-free.

According to makeup artist Fulvia Farolfi."We went for a very low-key, natural look! she wrote."Kim is a natural beauty, so we wanted to show her as naturally as possible, like she had just come back from the beach." To achieve this, the makeup artist skipped both mascara and eye shadow, and instead simply drew a red-brown pencil on the upper and lower lids. She then swirled a bronzy cream foundation on Kardashian's cheekbones and dabbed on a pink-beige lipstick. To give her a dewy look, Farolfi misted water and Rodin Olio Lusso onto Kardashian's skin.

The star has been known to ask her 12 million Twitter followers (she calls them "dolls") what color lipstick she should wear. When they respond, she actually takes their advice. It's this mix of fantasy and accessibility that makes audiences tune in to her family's shows, Kardashian says: "It's the glitz and the glam, but then we have the normal fights. I get a lot [of comments] like 'I have no sisters and I wish I did' or 'I have tons of sisters, and we're just like you!' There are so many of us, someone can relate to one of us in the family."

"Khloé joked with me and said, 'Will you be my surrogate?'" Kim says about having children. "I said, 'I think I have a couple more years when I just want my body to myself. At 35, I promise I'll consider it.'"

As for her future wedding? "I would just want it to be so special, with our family and close friends, and that's it. Somewhere on a deserted island, very private," she says, lowering her gaze. "No cameras."

Singer Whitney Houston, who reigned as one of the world's top pop stars in the 1980s and '90s but suffered from recurring bouts with drugs and alcohol, was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel room Saturday.
Law enforcement sources told The Times that paramedics arrived at the Beverly Hilton hotel, where Houston was staying, and found her dead. Her cause of death was unknown, said the sources, who asked to remain anonymous because the investigation is ongoing.
Houston, 48, was in the Los Angeles area for a musical tribute for music executive Clive Davis and had performed earlier this week.She was also planning to attend Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party Saturday at the Beverly Hilton hotel, the see-and-be-seen event of the year

She was known to have fashioned some of the best (and worst) '80s, '90s, and '00s trends. with her love for sequins never taking the back seat. Whitney will always be remembered for having style befitting her "diva" status. Banke Kuku Finds Home in Selfridges

BK (Banke Kuku) Textiles, creator of bespoke woven and printed fabrics for the fashion and interior industry can now be found nestled in Selfridges among other luxury lifestyle brands such as Missoni and DVF. A product range of 60cm x 60cm cousins/poofs are now available for purchase and on display in Selfridges Sleep Section on the departmental store’s 4th Floor.

The label’s Creative Director Banke Kuku studied Textile Design at Central St Martins and Chelsea Art College and has since collaborated with designers such as Duro Olowu, Jasmine di Milo and Jewel by Lisa.

BK Textiles is one of 10 designers set to feature at “Tales by Moonlight: A Fashion Folklore”, a static exhibition presented by Style House Files at British Council and British Fashion Council’s International Fashion Showcase 2012.

Duro Olowu Presents: “Material” At Salon 94, New York

London-based fashion designer Duro Olowu will present a show and pop-up shop of fashion and art at Salon 94’s Freeman Alley Gallery. The show will present a group of limited edition fashion and accessory designs from Duro’s Spring 2012 collection as well as a selection of vintage and contemporary photography, textiles, contemporary art, furniture, music, books and objets trouvés.

Duro has long curated, in his London store in Masons Yard Saint James, a diverse assemblage of “things” that have captivated and inspired him and his work. Clothing created by Duro for the exhibition will include intricately draped bias dresses with ruffle details, guipure lace jackets and paneled tail coats, collage bib sheaths and gilets, corseted and full skirted print dresses, billowing chiffon gowns and skirts, and hand made footwear and will be featured alongside commissioned pieces by Paris-based jeweler Taher Chemirik, New York-based artist Mathew Ronay and paintings by Katherine Bernhardt.

Installed in a mise-en-scène featuring works by Juergen Teller, including images from collaborations with Duro, vintage photography by Malian photographer Hamidou Maiga and designer Carlo Mollino, a large photograph by Laurie Simmons, illustrations by Bella Foster, woven canvases by New York artist Tony Cox, prints by Suzanne Wenger, drawings by Lorna Simpson, furniture and objects by Martino Gamper and Maria Pergay, sculptures by Ghanaian artist Paa Joe and London based Francis Upritchard, ceramics by Matthias Merkel Hess, vintage West African textiles and rare fabrics from couture fabric makers including Abraham of Switzerland, along with work by Kara Hamilton, Jackie Nickerson, Ludovica Gioscia, and Philip Kwame Apagya. Olowu adds ” My work, like my eye, is certainly international in its aesthetic, offbeat yet focused. As such, I am always open to the surprise of the new, the technique and skill of the past and the ability of fashion and art to challenge preconceived ideas of taste and culture.”

After training in law, Duro Olowu turned to a career in fashion, launching his label in 2004. In 2005 the British Fashion Council honored him with the prestigious New Designer of the Year Award. In 2010, he won the Best Designer Award at the African Fashion Awards and was a finalist for the Swiss Textiles Award. Alluring silhouettes, sharp tailoring, original prints and vintage textiles in combinations are Duro’s signature, inspired by his Jamaican-Nigerian heritage and London upbringing, making him a favorite among fashion insiders.

10 Beauty Habits You Must DROP this season

Many people believe that this is just about the time when we abandon our old habits this season of Love . At this time, we are supposed to feel totally refreshed and renewed.

That said, here are ten beauty routines to let go of…forever.

1- Sleeping in your makeup

When you are not Kim Kardashian and yeah yeah we understand you are tired. But is the 3.5 minutes of extra sleep really worth waking up looking crazy? Plus, your skin will not only look dull, but the slept-in makeup can also clog your pores (um, blemishes anyone?)

2-Chipped nail polish

Ah, there’s nothing like a fresh manicure; base coat, top coat, and the perfect color. The only problem happens when that beloved hue wanders away from your digits. When that happens, send an acetone-soaked cotton ball on a kamikaze mission pronto

3-DIY bangs

We’ve all gone through stressful times when we feel less than zero. Why is it at those times when there’s no salon in sight, that we decide to cut bangs or give ourselves a trim? C’mon, it’s not just me…is it?

4-Self-plucked brows

Let’s say you’re watching the Grammy’s or something and you see a gorge starlet on the red carpet with the sickest brows ever. Odds are her dream team consists of a “brow beautician”. Leave the tweezing to the professionals. I speak from experience.

5-Dirty brushes

We’ve all read magazines that remind us that dirty cosmetic brushes lead to a whole lot of bacteria issues (read: zits or a rash). Do yourself a favor and clean your makeup brushes every couple of weeks.

6-Unwrapped P.M. tresses

This kinda’ goes hand-in-hand with the sleeping-in-makeup thing. No matter if your hair is relaxed or natural, you need to protect your hair before hitting the hay. So whether that means slipping on a bonnet, scarf or a satin pillowcase, wrap it up.

7-Beauty product grave yard

Being a beauty writer, I have tons of products hanging around; so trust me, I get it. We hold on to products with the thought, “I might need this one day”. As days (and months) go by, we don’t touch them. Release those expired products into the universe (i.e. the trash can). If they are still good, give them out as little gifts.

8-The love below

If you wait too long to get your private parts waxed, you will be in a world of trouble (and indescribable pain). Try to stick to a schedule so you can get in and out smoothly.

9-Relaxing hair too often

Stretching relaxers is so this season. In fact, I remember hearing my stylist say no one’s hair needs to be relaxed every four weeks. Challenge yourself to stretch your relaxer by one week (and don’t overdose on the flat iron in the meantime). After all, baby steps can help save your “baby hair”.

10-New season, same products

Just as you pack away last season’s clothes, the previous season’s products also need a hiatus. For instance, just as your summer cleanser is too intense for winter, your winter moisturizer is probably too rich for summertime heat.
