The way in which Bryant recounts his linguistic mishaps in Russia reach beyond any geographic boundaries and address the difficulties of cross-cultural communication on a much broader level. I lived in China for a year during college and completely identified with the 'fish out of water' experience that Bryant so perfectly captures. This is a book that speaks to anyone who has ever attempted to tackle a foreign language/culture or has had a desire to do so. That said, I was rather skeptical when I ran across "The Moscow Diaries' while browsing the web. I ultimately gave in to my book addiction instincts and ordered it. Despite my desire for it to be mediocre, I have to admit that I was quite pleasantly surprised. It is a well-written, meticulously-crafted tome that will now proudly share space with the other books in my 'Russia pantheon' bookshelf.
