Every place in this world has a story… sometimes beautiful, sometimes sad, every abandoned place becomes a memory, a memory that will soon be forgotten if we do not try to keep it alive and discover more of its secrets. Bodie is a genuine California gold-mining ghost town from the late 1800′s, located in the eastern slopes of the Sierra, close to the Nevada border. Due to an extremely wild climate, the forgotten city can be very very hot while summer and covered with snow in winter. Its story began in 1859, when William S. Body (Bodey) found gold here. The mining camp grew slowly from 1860 to the mid-1870s, became a boom town in 1877 and by 1879, it had a population of about 10,000 with 2,000 buildings. Sadly, the boom was over in four short years and by 1882, Bodie fall into decline. At that time, the town of Bodie bustled with families,

robbers, miners, store owners, gunfighters and prostitutes. It seemd to be known more for its wild living than for its big gold resources. There was entertainment for every taste: more than 65 saloons in town,’houses of ill repute’, gambling halls and opium dens. In 1932, after a big fire, almost the entire population finally left Bodie. Today, there are about 200 structures buildings well preserved. Bodie became in 1962 a California State Park and is maintained in a state of “arrested decay”. Many people are interested in Bodie and schools, universities, and accredited online colleges touch on the subject of its history. Although, the ghost town looks almost the same as it did 50 years ago when the last residents left, the streets are quiet now. Only from time to time, the ghosts visit their abandoned houses in the memory of those days.

In fact, Tulum has yet to be completely invaded by tourism and is, therefore, still rather secluded and peaceful. A near perfect semi-circle of white sand is surrounded by a backdrop of waterfalls and gorgeous mountains stretching up past the clouds. While it can get crowded, especially during the winter when the surfing is excellent, you won’t find a more stunning view to gaze at while tanning anywhere in the world.

Ocracoke Island

If privacy and seclusion are what you look for in a sunbathing location, then look no further. This little gem of a spot can only be reached by boat, private plane or ferry. While modern electronics (ie: phones and computers) have reached this island paradise, they are still frowned on. The wilderness beach on Ocracoke has some of the most pristine sand to be found. Relax, get that book out you’ve been wanting to read and enjoy the rays.

Ipanema Beach

Yes, the beach made famous by the song! Actually, Ipanema became famous in the 1970s when women first started wearing tangas (precursor to today’s thong bathing suit) on its shores. That atmosphere of freedom is still alive and well in Rio de Janero. It is a city full of life and is more than tolerant of self expression – on the beach or off. Topless sunbathing is common and thongs are still the preferred beachwear. If you want to let your hair down and show off your hard work at the gym, Rio is the place to do it.

If you want some fun mixed in with your sun worship, then Main Beach is the place to be. Main Beach has an old fashioned boardwalk and amusement park, complete with rides, games and food just steps from the beach. Santa Cruz has something for everyone and a beach to suit everyone’s style.

The beaches of the Dominican Republic are renowned for their beauty and tranquility. Pristine, unspoiled and scenic, you almost can’t go wrong anywhere in the D.R. The only way to access La Minitas Beach is by a ten minute shuttle or golf cart ride, making this a great pick for those that prefer to sunbathe in relative seclusion. Despite being relatively secluded, there are restaurants fairly close if you get hungry, and, best of all, there is a massage room directly on the beach. Sunbathing and a massage – how can you go wrong?

The Sutherland Falls

The beautiful fiords of New Zealand have been featured before in this site, but as gorgeous as the fiords are, the water is not limited to the inlets. Just south of Milford Sound lies Sutherland, arguably New Zealand’s most famous waterfall. Usually tall cascades don’t provide a good representation of what a powerful waterfall should look like. There are exceptions of course, and the first edition featured a couple. So, keeping up with that tradition, the Sutherland Falls is an unbelievably tall waterfall at 580m, and is thankfully not too narrow, nor imperfectly vertical as with non-plunge falls; both common faults with tall waterfalls. Also the water flow certainly isn’t weak and being reduced to a trickle as is the case with some of tallest waterfalls of the world. The

thundering Sutherland Falls reminds us how height can be such a plus with enough water flow. Tourists say that the noise is more deafening than some of that of the other more popular falls they have been too. Now, that is power.

Jim Jim Falls

With Jim Jim falls, we slowly venture into that territory of the classic rectangular waterfall with a robust sheet of water falling in one single plunge. That, to me, is the perfect kind of falls, and I try to promote that in the previous edition as well as this one. Jim Jim Falls suits this purpose very well as it plunges 150m down from the straight cliffs at Kakadu National Park, located in Australia’s Northern Territory. It is seen best during the wet season, which runs from December to March in the southern hemisphere. So, with the desired copious amount of rain, the falls emerge straight out of the upper plateau with fantastic force. Sadly, in the dry season the water ceases to flow completely, but this makes for a remarkable transformation as the seasons change, and Jim Jim Falls delivers a very aqueous outcome.

Rhine Falls

Rhine Falls presents itself as one big blur of rushing water. It takes some time for the eye to make out where the waterfall starts and ends as the deluge of water just camouflages with river Rhine, and there is no visible terrain present at the top as the sheer volume of the water covers it all. It is a lowly 23m tall, but boasts a large width of 150m, and together with the enormity of its water flow, Rhine Falls seizes the no.7 spot. In fact it always makes high appearances on waterfall charts ranking flow rates. And due to the fact that it doesn’t carry any rapids and is large enough to have a distinctive appearance, it can be easily counted as one of the elite pure waterfalls. There are also a few viewing platforms which let you observe the falls from up close, adding to the feverish excitement.

Montmorency Falls

USA and Canada have many things in common. One of them is that both nations are hosts to fantastic waterfalls. Montmorency Falls can be argued to be Canada’s best waterfall, after Niagara, with its awesome dimensions of 275 feet in height and 150 feet in width. It certainly accounts for a grandiose display of falling water on the Montmorency River, in Quebec. Fortunately or unfortunately, as per one’s own taste, they have made the falls easier to access by making a park around it, complete with facilities to make the viewing easier. These include a footbridge across the falls and a cable car to transport you up and down the cascading waters. This tourist-friendly approach might detract some visitors preferring the thrill of a nearly inaccessible beauty left alone and hidden in its remote location, but then again, the number of possible views from varied angles would be limited without the constructions. Either way, Montmorency Falls is sheer greatness.

Tis Issat Falls

Normally, when asked about Ethiopia you might shout out in name of its famous coffee bean varieties, but you know it is a safe bet to bank on a state’s natural wonders if that country happens to be on the Dark Continent. The Ethiopian Tis Issat Falls is also known as the Blue Nile Falls and it is an example of the power of the river Nile, which happens to be the longest river in planet Earth. Due to the building of a hydroelectric dam, the water flow really dries up during the dry seasons providing only a meek sight – a fairly common phenomenon around the world where dams are built. But come rainy season, the water really barrages down and can transform to a 400m wide, full blown waterfall. The height of the Falls ranges from 37 to 45m and there are some wedges of terrain breaking the sheet of falling water. But despite that, Tis Issat continues to amaze, fully deserving an entry at no.5.

Skogafoss Falls

Iceland had been established as a minefield for big staggering waterfalls in the previous edition, a list which featured two waterfalls from the Nordic nation. So I can’t believe that Skogafoss Falls got away the first time, as it merits the same attention given to its other two counterparts. It is probably the smoothest waterfall in this list, as the water falls down immaculately in a perfectly edged out rectangle of dimensions of 25m width and 60m height. There are no rocks or ridges in between to separate the flow or result in sprouting different water flows which ultimately are close enough to mix and give the illusion of one single large plunge. While this is the usual case for some of the biggest falls out there, it isn’t for Skogafoss as there is one large sheet of streamlined descent of water, giving the waterfall a very potent appearance. With Skogafoss included, the Icelandic big three are now officially covered.

Gokak Falls

Continuing another trend from the previous list, India’s state of Karnataka seems to have churned out yet another ravishing waterfall, and there were many more strong candidates from that region when doing the research. Undoubtedly, Karnataka is South Asia’s best waterfall province with its multitude of waterfalls, and it gives us Gokak Falls at no.3. Now we really kick into beast mode, with the water barraging down from gorges and creating tremendous amounts of mist below. The water of Gokak is of a brownish color which sets it apart from other large waterfalls, and it definitely has the proportions which command respect – a height of 50m, but more importantly a width of 177m. The construction of a hydroelectric dam has curbed the water flow to some extent, but come monsoon season this fearsome waterfall hits top gear.

Kalandula Falls

When it comes to Kalandula Falls, stats speak for themselves. It is 104m tall and can be 400 to 600m wide depending on the water flow. This Angolan treasure can look similar in appearance to the Tis Issat Falls with its flow consisting of long stringy plunges coming together to form a creditable sheet of cascading water, revealing brown ridges in between. But it’s over twice the height of Tis Issat, and thus, naturally, makes an appearance in this list. It is, by far, Africa’s second biggest waterfall after Victoria Falls, not counting the many rapid containing falls across the river Congo, which should not be technically classified as waterfalls, as they look nothing like them. It’s a funny thought that nature goes uninterrupted in spite of all man-made conflicts. The former Portuguese colony took a long time to pull out of a civil war after its independence and is recently working on developing its tourism industry. Kalandula Falls will definitely boost this effort.

Kaieteur Falls

Kaieteur Falls was the reason for writing 10 More Awe-inspiring Waterfalls. This was the one cascade closest to making the cut in the first edition, and so I justify its previous exclusion by rewarding it the no.1 spot in this list. Located in Guyana, Kaieteur Falls is blessed with the measurements of 221m in height and nearly 100m in width. Its flow is as planate as you can get without any breaks, it produces more than generous amounts of mist, and no other waterfall at over 200m is as voluminous as Kaieteur Falls. Altogether, it is one of the best exemplary waterfalls out there. The top three waterfalls in the previous edition are dwarfed in height by this wonder, and it still manages to have an extraordinarily heavy water flow. In the previous edition, we showed that Iguazu Falls had Niagara Falls beat in all fairness. Kaieteur Falls similarly has got the features to hog your attention, and it should be mentioned more often when speaking of the world’s most awe-inspiring waterfalls.

Detian Falls

Big wholesome waterfalls serve as great separation landmarks in forming borders between countries, think Iguazu between Argentina and Brazil, Victoria between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and Niagara between USA and Canada; all three waterfalls covered in the first edition of this list. Detian Falls is not as big as those massive cataracts, but this splendid waterfall is impressive enough to crack open a place for itself in this list. It forms a part of the border between China and Vietnam. It falls 50m down in three steps, which somewhat mucks its holistic potential, but Detian Falls also comes with an 80m width which greatly enhances the whole spectacle. It’s located on the Guising River between the provinces of the two nations respectively, and it probably has the lushest surroundings of any waterfall in this list, a common scenic feature surrounding cascades in that region. It must be quite an experience to stand back at the midst of lime-green rice paddy fields of Vietnam, and then glance up and witness the contrast of the whitish blue plunging water.

Colosseum, Rome

Construction of the Colosseum was begun sometime between AD 70 and 72 during the reign of Vespasian; the structure was officially dedicated in AD 80 by Titus in a ceremony that included 100 days of games. The Colosseum is a freestanding structure of stone and concrete, measuring 620 by 513 feet (190 by 155 metres) overall and seating some 50,000 spectators. It was the scene of thousands of hand-to-hand combats between gladiators, of contests between men and animals.

The Great Wall, China

The Great Wall is a series of sandstone and earthen fortifications in China, built, rebuilt, and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire during the rule of successive dynasties. Several walls, referred to as the Great Wall of China, were built since the 5th century BC, the most famous being the one built between 220 BC and 200 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang.

Petra, Jordan

Petra is an ancient city, centre of an Arab kingdom in Hellenistic and Roman times; its ruins are in southwest Jordan. The city was built on a terrace, pierced from east to west by the Wadi Musa (the Valley of Moses)—one of the places where, according to tradition, the Israelite leader Moses struck a rock and water gushed forth. The valley is enclosed by sandstone cliffs veined with shades of red and purple varying to pale yellow, and for this reason Petra was called by the 19th-century English biblical scholar John William Burgon a “rose-red city half as old as Time.”

Machu Pichu is a pre-Columbian Inca city located at 2,430 m (7,970 ft) altitude on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru, about 70 km (44 mi) northwest of Cusco. Chichen Itza, Mexico

Chichen Itza is a ruined ancient Maya city occupying an area of 4 square miles (10 square km) in south-central Yucatán state, Mexico. It is located some 90 miles (150 km) east-northeast of Uxmal and 75 miles (120 km) east-southeast of the modern city of Mérida. The only source of water in the arid region around the site is from wells (cenotes) formed by sinkholes in limestone formations.

The Tah Mahal is a mausoleum complex in Agra, northern India, on the southern bank of the Yamuna (Jumna) River. I would also say that the food in Queenstown ranks as the best I have eaten in the entire world; though food in New Zealand is of an extremely high standard in general. There are a large number of hotels right on the waterfront of Lake Wakitipu (New Zealand’s longest lake and third largest). The water is bitterly cold (even in summer) – but it is beautiful to look at from your

hotel window and if you can stand the cold, bathing is certainly allowed. Queenstown is also New Zealand’s jetboat and bungy jumping capital. And if you think the price is too high – you can always pop to Arrowtown right next door and try panning for gold in one of New Zealand’s old mining towns. Oh – and don’t forget, New Zealander’s are the friendliest people in the world.

Everyone knows that Paris is the City of Romance and Food, but it has that reputation for a good reason! The food in France is simply outstanding and almost unparalleled around the world. You can stay at very inexpensive hotels, or very expensive ones, depending on your budget; just make sure you leave enough money for the food and wine. Some of the things you will have to do: 1) eat macaroons at La Duree, on the Champs Elysee (you won’t be able to control yourself when you taste these things!), 2) eat ice-cream at Berthillon – the best ice-cream in the world (handmade entirely from natural ingredients), and 3) eat pastries at Pierre Hermé – the picasso of pastry. Don’t forget to check out Printemps – the incredible department store found on Boulevard Haussmann.

This one is for the intellect – so that you can one day say that you have been the last bastion of Stalinist communist. It is very difficult to obtain a visa to visit North Korea, and if you do, it will be an expensive holiday. But you will be in a very small group of people who can say that have visited. By all accounts the food is extremely good and plentiful. You will be waited on hand and foot, and you will have a tour guide with you the whole time to explain things (okay – they are communist agents, but they will still explain things). You can visit the large shopping center and watch people who are paid to shop (so they look prosperous) and if you time it right, you may get a chance to see the amazing Mass Games, which are held every year on the 15th of April at the Arirang Festival, to celebrate the birthday of the Dictator Kim Il-sung.

Cape Town is the third most populace city in South Africa, and it is the most popular tourist destination due to its good climate and natural setting. It is the home of the famous Table Mountain. Due to the city’s unique geography, it is possible to visit several different beaches in the same day, each with a different setting and atmosphere. Cape Town is noted for its architectural heritage, with the highest density of Cape Dutch style buildings in the world. The Basilica of Saint Peter, officially known in Italian as the Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano is located within the Vatican City. Marseille, France. Notre-Dame de la Garde is a basilica located in Marseille, France. This ornate Neo-Byzantine church is situated at the highest natural point in Marseille, a 162 m (532 ft) limestone outcrop on the south side of the Old Port. As well as being a major local landmark, it is the site of a popular annual pilgrimage every Assumption Day (August 15). Local inhabitants commonly refer to it as la bonne mère (“the good mother”). The church was built between 1853, when the foundation stone was laid on September 11, and 1864. The church was built on the site of a 13th century chapel, also dedicated to Our Lady of the Watch, the traditional guardian of seafarers.

The basilica is surmounted by a 60 m (197 ft) belfry topped with a huge statue of the Virgin and Child, visible across much of the city and for miles out at sea. Construction of the basilica took five years and required 170,000 tons of material, including 23 shiploads of marble and porphyry from Italy.

The church began construction in 1929 and was consecrated in 1940, yet the tallest of the towers was not completed until 2007 and was dubbed the Bible Tower. The basilica was built in an Indo-Gothic style with three large towers, the tallest of which is 260 feet high. The red cross atop the Bible Tower is lit at night and can be seen from miles away. Unbelievable Guaíra Falls

Located on the Parana river the Guaíra Falls were, in terms of total volume, the largest waterfall on earth. 1,750,000 cubic feet of water fell over this waterfall each second on average, compared to just 70,000 cubic feet per second for Niagra Falls. However, the falls were flooded in 1982 when a dam was created to take advantage of this massive flow rate. The Itaipu Dam is now the second most powerful hydroelectric dam in the world, after the Three Gorges Dam. The Itaipu Dam supplies 90% of the power consumed by Paraguay, and 19% of the power consumed by Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Iceberg B-15 in Antarctica

Iceberg B-15 was the largest ever recorded iceberg. It had an area of 3,100 km², making it larger than the island of Jamaica, and was created when part of the Ross Ice Shelf broke off in March 2000. In 2003, it broke apart, and one of the larger pieces (called B-15a) drifted north, eventually smashing into a glacier in 2005, breaking off an 8-km² section and forcing many antarctic maps to be rewritten. It drifted along the coast and eventually ran aground, breaking up once again. In 2006, a storm in Alaska (that’s right, Alaska) caused an ocean swell that travelled 13,500km, over 6 days, to Antarctica and broke up the largest remaining part even more. Almost a decade on, parts of the iceberg have still not melted, with the largest remaining part, still called B-15a, having an area of 1,700 km². The picture above shows B-15a (top left) in 2005, after drifting west into the Drygalski Glacier (bottom), breaking the end off into several pieces.

With a salinity of over 40%, Don Juan Pond is the saltiest body of water in the world. It is named after the two pilots who first investigated the pond in 1961, Lt Don Roe and Lt John Hickey. It is a small lake, only 100m by 300m, and on average 0.1m deep, but it is so salty that even in the Antarctic, where the temperature at the pond regularly drops to as low as -30 degrees Celsius, it never freezes. It is 18 times saltier than sea water, compared to the Dead Sea which is only 8 times saltier than sea water.

Rotorua is a city on the southern shores of the lake of the same name, in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island of New Zealand. The city is known for its geothermal activity, with a number of geysers, notably the Pohutu Geyser at Whakarewarewa, and boiling mud pools (pictured above) located in the city. This thermal activity owes itself to the Rotorua caldera on which the city lies. Rotorua is also a top adventure destination and is New Zealand’s Maori cultural heartland. Rotorua city is renowned for its unique “rotten eggs” aroma, which is caused by the geothermal activity releasing sulphur compounds into the atmosphere. If you are ever visiting New Zealand – this is a city you must see. It was once home to the famed Pink and White Terraces and you can visit thermal wonderlands with sights that are truly astounding.

Amazing Places on Greenland

This is more of a curiosity and not visually impressive, but 83-42 is believed to be the northernmost permanent point of land on earth. It is tiny, only 35m by 15m and 4m high, but is about 400 miles from the north pole. It beat the previous record holder, ATOW1996, when it was discovered in 1998, and lichens were found growing on it, suggesting it was not just one of the temporary gravel bars that are found in that region, which are regularly pushed around by the rough seas. The picture above features what is currently the northernmost point on land, one of the temporary gravel bars, photographed in 2007, as I could find no photos of 83-42 (For some reason, nobody feels the need to produce a photograph of a tiny rock in the middle of nowhere, which only five people have ever stepped foot on).
