All relationships have their fair share of problems such as sex, money etc. however, food differences are also causing relationship problems. We’re not just talking about diets being imposed on partners but also cultural and religious differences.

Psychotherapist Karen Koenig told Sarah LeTrent, writing for KVTQ, food is an

“anything-but-simple subject. How we feed ourselves and each other says a great deal about how we feel about ourselves and our loved ones.”

So, if your loved one/s don’t like, won’t eat or can’t eat certain foods then it’s time to sit down and talk rather then get irritated or annoyed and end-up rowing. As with any part of a successful relationship comprises do have to be made sometimes, but this doesn’t have to be (or shouldn’t) always be one-sided affairs. You also may have to make sacrifices and put your negotiation skills into play to reach a happy medium that you can both live with happily.

Respect is the name of the game when it comes to relationships. If a partner cannot eat foods which have been prepared in a specific way or can’t be prepared next to other foods then simply find ways to divide the prep area in your kitchen. Likewise if your partner loves steak and you’re a vegan maybe steak can be eaten when you’re not about.

The Paleo diet or to give it its full name Paleolithic, is also referred to as the primal or ancestral diet. The main principle of this diet is to take us back to our roots by excluding any foods that wouldn’t have been available to our ‘cave men’ ancestors. It is low in carbs and high in protein and proclaims to be helping people get rid of their excess weight as well as not taking prescription medications – I’m not so sure that stopping prescription medication is a good thing – but that’s my opinion and I do realize that many people take prescription medication out of habit.

The Paleo diet is based on eating foods that were available to our nomadic ancestors who didn’t have agriculture to help them support their diet. The diet takes out any processed foods or animals which are bred purely for meat – for example battery reared chickens along with bread and pasta and other high-carb foods as the Paleolithic period stopped with the introduction of farming.

There appears to have been a lot of research and studies carried out of the pros and cons of this diet and new life style and of course there are those who believe we need to include certain ‘modern’ foods in our diets to remain healthy.

For those who’ve tried and not succeeded with other diets may like to look further into ways to lose weight with effective diets.

Writing for Money Web, Felicity Duncan has pre-empted one of the latest reports highlighting the risk of dementia and memory loss in old age.

She writes:

‘According to a soon-be-published report from America’s Mayo Clinic, overeating may double the risk of memory loss among people over 70, a finding that highlights yet again the dangers posed by high-calorie diets and being overweight’.

Yonas Geda who led the Mayo Clinic research team studied over 1,200 people aged between 70 and 90, and found that those who ate over 2,100 calories a day were doubling their risk of developing a condition known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) than those who ate less than 1,500 calories a day.

Mild cognitive impairment can be a forerunner to dementia; as those with MCI can experience difficulties remembering recent events and/or new information could lead them to develop more severe memory loss including Alzheimer’s disease.

This report suggests that anyone who is over weight should get to the bottom of the problem sooner rather than later, more especially those who take the attitude that once you reach a certain age dieting and staying fit is irrelevant as the conclusion shows the link between staying fit and well is associated with maintaining a healthy weight.

The increase in the number of students electing to ‘go’ vegetarian could be due to the financial problems many of them face. It has been an age old cliché that students live on cheap food such a tins of baked beans and anything made with mince!

However, with tuition fees rising many have decided to try and save money by not buying meat – especially red meat due to the cost. For years students have got by on make shift meals which and quick and cheap to make and cook so there’s nothing really new. It seems that some students are becoming non-meat eaters because of their concerns regarding how animals are raised and slaughtered – which is the whole principle of being vegetarian surely?

I wonder if these new vegetarians think about leather products and wear they buy such as belts or shoes? Or why they think it’s okay to eat fish and seafood and not meat?

And then of course there’s those who need to lose weight and think that by cutting out meat they’ll shed a few unwanted pounds!

Today Health (msnbc.com) have reported that during research on different diets the results showed that calorie counting was a positive way to lose weight and more importantly keeping it off. The research looked at 4 different diets and monitored how the participants were doing after six months and then again in 2 years.

The results showed variations in different the diets, however, it also showed that it was those who stuck with the diet over the long-term had managed to maintain a weight loss. Determination and watching your calorie intake looks as if it’s the way to go which ever diet you chose.

Stanford University professor Christopher Gardner, who was not involved in the study and research is reported saying:

“If you’re happier doing it low fat, or happier doing it low carb, this paper says it’s OK to do it either way. They were equally successful.”

He concluded by saying

“people should choose the diet that’s easiest for them to stick with”.

So, if you’re finding difficulties sticking with your current diet plan maybe you should switch to another which is easier to fit in with your lifestyle – because perseverance and watching your calorie intake may make dieting a whole lot easier for you.

People who believe that their chicken or fish diets are ‘good’ for them may be subjecting their bodies to the same iron deficiencies as those who eat junk foods according to a new study.

The researchers raised concerns that due to a lack of understanding of the importance of iron in diets may be endangering people’s health as well as impeding children’s performance at school.

Christian Jessen, TV doctor and health campaigner is reported to have stated;

“The high rate of iron deficiency among women in a developed country like the UK is a real concern; the side effects are subtle and can creep on up you – you can end up feeling tired, lethargic with no get up and go.”

The Daily Express reported that simply by swapping meals for those rich in iron could make a real difference.

Include iron rich foods such as steak, liver and watercress in your diet to help maintain your iron levels.

You’ve been on your diet for a couple of weeks, full of enthusiasm and determination however, after loosing a couple of pounds (maybe more) the first two weeks you’ve now come to a standstill and asking yourself ‘where did I go wrong?’

Does this sound familiar? – if it does then you have reached a diet plateau and need to get yourself off the plateau and back on track rather than giving up thinking you’re a failure. Here are 5 ways to help you stay focused and start the weight loss needle swinging in the right direction.

1. Check what you’re actually eating – it’s so easy to add a little more than you should to your plate – think back to the start of your diet and evaluate where you may have added a couple of bites more.

2. Limit your alcohol content – it’s surprising how many calories one unit of alcohol contains – with the festive season over reducing your alcohol intake should be a little easier.

3. It could be your exercise that’s now helping you to lose weight – maybe you need to add another 5-10 minutes to your routine.

4. Make sure that you’re drinking enough water – the recommended amount for most diets is 8 glasses or 2 litres per day.

5. Ask friends and family to help you – without nagging, they should encourage good eating habits to help you stay on track.

I hope these points will encourage you to stick with your diet plan and get you back on-track to sheds the pounds.

Registered dietician and executive director of the Calorie Control Council Beth Hubrich has predicted that new approaches to dieting will play a major part of weight loss this year.

“With life busier and more stressful than ever, rather than making a complete overhaul, people will be looking for small steps they can take to be healthier,” she continued to say “Simple lifestyle changes such as increasing fruit and veggies by one serving per day, cutting out 50-150 calories per day by eating fewer bites of a sandwich, choosing a diet soda or low-cal beverage in place of the regular versions, and exercising 10 minutes here or there, can make a big difference in 2012 – and hopefully for life.”

So, if you’re looking to lose weight and keep it off you’ll need to adopt a new healthy lifestyle as part of your effective diets plan.

Tanya Zuckerbrot writing for Fox News sheds insight to the potential harm that too much seaweed in your diet may pose.

She says:

“I recently had a patient who was downing seaweed salad a few times per week, but couldn’t figure out why she wasn’t losing weight and why she felt so swollen. That’s because 1 cup of seaweed salad has about 130 calories, 25 grams of carbohydrate, 4 grams of sugar, 3 grams of fiber and the real kicker – 900-1200 mg sodium. That’s almost half of a whole day’s worth of sodium in just one cup of seaweed salad. Sodium is an electrolyte that attaches itself to water – the more sodium you eat, the more water you retain which prevents weight loss and increases swelling. Word to the wise – too much of anything is probably not a good thing”.

Adding seaweed in moderation to your diet can be beneficial to your health as its packed with vitamins, iodine, calcium and iron.

Too much of any food can’t and isn’t always good for you; they may help you lose weight fast, for example the cabbage soup diet, but you’ll soon find yourself fatigued and with a nasty upset tummy if you keep this type of diet up for too long.

Just about every celebrity has a special diet, either one which the promote commercially or that they use. All claiming it’s what keeps them looking trim, and yet have you ever stopped to think that they also probably have people to prepare their food for them and they all also have personal trainers.

I’m not saying that all of their diets rarely work, what I am saying is that celebrities have the money to spend on having their shopping bought and prepared as well as personal trainers who don’t come cheap.

If you have the time and spare cash then perhaps one of these diets may work for you as well – don’t forget that celebrities also have professional makeup and hairstylists work their magic to ensure their clients always look picture perfect. There may be the times when the paparazzi get a photo of celebrities looking dishevelled and without makeup and then you’ll see that without all the paraphernalia they don’t look dissimilar to ourselves.

These diets are tailored specifically to each celebrity, some may work however many do not and we also shouldn’t forget that many are quite literally money spinners for the agents as well as the celbs themselves!

We than have to bring airbrushing into the equation – it’s a known fact that many glossy magazines and photo shoots are airbrushed and can metaphorically remove pounds from upper thighs and waistlines.

If your looking for effective diets the celebrity styled diets may or may not be the answer you’re looking for even if you do have little problem finding the spare cash.
