TETES A CLAQUES WORLD WIDE!

Tetesaclaques.tv, the French-language humour website created by former Publicis Montreal creative director Michel Beaudet, should have an English version to coincide with its two-year anniversary this August.

Tetesaclaques.tv consists of 100 short clips that combine animated clay figures and video skits created and voiced by Beaudet. The French site has enjoyed robust growth since launching two years ago; it gets about 1.2 million unique visitors per month, and its content is available on mobile phones in Quebec and France. The clips have also been compiled onto two DVD volumes.

According to Simon Parizeau, studio director for Beaudet’s Salambo Productions, the English site—which will be TAC.tv—will mainly feature adapted versions of previously produced clips at launch. He believes that the style of humour will translate well to English-speaking audiences.

“The important thing is to work with the English writers and get feedback,” said Parizeau. “But I think we have clips that can be very international.”

Catalina Briceno, head of operations for Salambo Productions, said that viewers connect to the material because its characters, while absurdly rendered with outsized eyes and facial features, strike a chord of familiarity.

“They can recognize some characters’ personalities from either themselves or people they know,” she said. “We’re taking those universal character traits so everyone feels they can engage with these characters.”

Parizeau believes that the level of engagement that fans have with Tetesaclaques.tv is attractive to advertisers, as is its broad demographic appeal. “We skew younger, but it also works for families,” he said.

Salambo and the Olive Canada Network, which handles sales for Tetesaclaques.tv and TAC.tv, are searching for advertisers to support the English version of the site. Bell Canada and General Motors are among the advertisers on the original French site.

Briceno said a variety of opportunities are available for advertisers, who can buy traditional leader board and big box space on the site as well as license TAC.tv characters for use in campaigns.

Tetes a claques team celebrated when their first DVD sold over 100,000 copies since its release in October 2007. In january 2008, Salambo Productions signed a three-year deal with Radio-Canada (French version of CBC) for the first 45 videos produced (the same ones as the DVD) and aired daily in December and January 20, 2008. It was a first in the world with television since Canal+ , a cryped site in France, did not start until January. A documentary on the extent of the success of the Têtes à claques will be also produced in association with MC2 Communications Media and will be produced by Jean-Simon Chartier.

English is definitely part of the formula in their hot pursuit to enter the world market.

When I arrived, they told me that I would have a surprise on Saturday», says the digital graphics artist from Des Ruisseaux, Québec. We hear it everyday that France is being bombarded with various marketing tools used by SFR to promote its new site çavaouatcher. Têtes à claques animation is quite visible everywhere. After quite an extensive search on the net, here are a few pictures found in France's bus shelters, bistrots*, and the métro (subway). SFR is also using streetmarketing to promote its wireless company.

* A Bistrot (which apparently means "quick" in Russian) is the French equivalent to the English pub or the American diner.

That is the new slogan used to promote SFR, French mobile phone company (originally Société Française de Radiotéléphonie) national leader in telecommunications, with 18 million client connections across France. It offers a long-range of portable devices used for mobile communication including telephone services, wireless communications, text messaging, etc. SFR is for France what Sympatico/MSN.ca portal is to Canadians.

SFR is promoting its tetesaclaques mobile products with a contest to win a Trip to Canada for two or to win T-Shirts starting August 25, 2007.

Imagine that? A guide has been created as an interpretation tool to help better understand the language used in the tetesaclaques videos. The Glossary contains French Quebec terminology vs France terminology... sort of a French-English dictionnary but it is a French-French dictionnary!

Safarir has seen an increase in the sales of their French Canadian comic magazine after publishing 2 issues with Têtes à claques cartoons on its cover.

Back from holidays!

Têtesàclaques.tv just released a new video featuring a guy in the drive-thru. After taking a short break for Summer fun (short for some but rather long for others!) the site is celebrating its 12-month existance in August and the creator, Michel Beaudet, has alot to celebrate about. The risk-taker has seen his financial security growing, growing and still growing! Vacations are usually out of the question for new entrepreneurs. $12 million is good enough though to go out and play and be brave enough to inspire visitors to do the same by promoting to get out and get some fresh air directly on the first page of the site (don't know... throw the baseball or swim in the pool).

After making national headlines with its marketing success comes along talented cartoonists awaiting for an opportunity to draw. Well, here are some great cartoons going around.

Thanks to Ygreck man (Yannick Lemay) who granted me permission to publish his Têtes à claques cartoons. He is a very notable cartoonist who produces comic books, editorial cartoons containing canadian political and news cartoons. Some of his drawings can be seen in the Journal du Québec. He also works in courtrooms sketching the faces of defendants, lawyers, and witnesses.

Michel Beaudet is exporting his clips to French portals where they too (in a month or two) will be able to view clips and have access to a broad array of funny video ring tones and have Johny Boy tell when the cell phone is ringing. Michel Beaudet also took the time to meet with the French media for interviews with 20 Minutes and indicated that he is receiving more e-mails from France than Quebec!

Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day & Têtes à Claques

Happy Saint-Jean-Baptiste!

Every year, on the 24th of June, all Québécois get together with friends and family to celebrate the Fête Nationale (National Holiday); la Saint-Jean-Baptiste. It is a privileged moment to celebrate the cultural pride through colourful parades and lively parties marking the holiday. The traditional celebration is in honour of the Patron Saint of French Canadians, who was officially proclaimed as such by His Holiness Pope Pius X in 1908.

The success of Têtes à Claques has rapidly surpass Quebec borders.
While the nation is busy celebrating its rich heritage, Michel Beaudet is taking the time to travel across the Atlantic on a business trip (on flight DC 132?) to meet with the French Cousins. In France the site has reached close to 1 million visitors. That is just a small evident part of something larger to come. Psst.... there is more than 5 million bloggers in France(Technorati)! Above, is the latest clip about a couple traveling to France.

Did he forget his own?

Considering that timing is everything for the development of the multi-million $ machine that is Tetesaclaques.tv, it is quite surprising that he has not taken the time to create a clip for this special Quebec occasion since clips have been created for X-Mas, New Years, Valentine's day, etc.

Wow! What a fantastic Offer by Têtes à Claques!

The Sepulchre family from Montreal, Quebec paid a total of $14 300 CAN to complete the collection of all 3 Uncle Tom's Super Gadgets on e-bay Canada. $8 600 on the «Body Toner Platinum Edition», $3 550 on the «Classical Willi Waller 2006» and yesterday's bid of $2 146 on the «Amazing LCD Shovel 2007» for a total of $14 296. Even eBay Canada pitched in to round it off at $15 000.

All 3 items were handed to the lucky Sepulchre family in Montreal, Quebec today. Their second child has been diagnosed with autism 7 years ago and the parents wanted to give back to the Sainte-Justine Hospital Foundation.

So much one can hardly take it all in.

Where to Start? Have you ever had so much to tell that you couldn’t get it out fast enough. Well, there is a lot going on, for sure, with Têtes à claques / Tetesaclaques.tv. It's all happening too fast to keep up with the stories behind the scenes. So I'll point out a few interesting and recent facts that shouldn't slip by:

First, e-bay auction on Le Willi Waller potato peeler ended Monday: Total $3,550 CAN for the Sainte-Justine Hospital Foundation in Montreal, Canada. Not bad!

Second, Congratulations to the proud owners David and Céline Sepulchre and their three children Jonathan, Perrick and Arnauld from Montreal, Canada. The family bought the Body Toner Platinum Edition for $8,600 CAN on e-bay. They admit that they would of never considered spending such an amount for a fly swatter if it wasn't for the Children Hospital Foundation.

Third, Analyze that!

Back in April 2007, I posted Têtes à Claques WIN the lottery! Offer 1M$. Hardly one month later, Adviso, a specialized firm in Internet strategy and marketing, estimated that Tetesaclaques.tv is now worth no less than 12,000,000$. Here is how they came up with the figures. Estimating a 200,000$ profit per month multiplied by 12 months = 2,4 million/year plus the market value estimated up to 10 times the annual revenue!

Last but not least: Céline Dion lightens up and makes fun of the Halloween sketch from Têtes à claques. Her husband René Angélil and the croud enjoy every moment. Yes, it is in French! WOW, c'est pas BEAUTIFUL ça!

Couche-Tard, one of Canada's largest convenient store chains, Lassonde Inc, packagers of Oasis, Rougement and Everfresh, and Têtes à Claques partnered up for the production of Fruite-Bulles, fruit-flavoured drinks. The drinks are sold as of today in Couche-Tard corner stores and come in three flavours: orange, cream soda, and grape. It is the second business agreement with the company Lassonde from Québec (the 1st was a Fruité juice placed in one of the Tetesaclaques clips). The sequence of events was only logical to have the flight captain on the grape bottle since the popular clip included an incident with a grape juice from Lassonde. "There is no atomic bomb in the canisse".

Business is booming indeed!

Kellogg has seen an increase in the sell of Pop-Tarts with the Halloween clip and will have a contest in June on the Tetesaclaques.tv web site. The winner will receive a one-year supply.

CONGRATULATIONS! MICHEL BEAUDET IS THE WINNER !!! L'OLIVIER DE L'ANNÉE 2007.

Perhaps next year since the award was presented to les Grandes gueules. They were particularly distinguished with the official Olivier.
Mario Tessier and Gaudet obtained the Olivier of the year for their exceptional contribution to the Québécois humour. They also gained an award for this year's humour album of the year. They recently put an end to their 15 year daily radio show.

Francophone press is now reporting that Quebec Pluriel will bring the matter to Human Rights Commission since Salambo refused to remove the cannibal clip from the web site and apologize.

Têtes à claques' intention is clearly visible on their web site:
"To all our Fans:
Rest assure. We have no intention in removing the "cannibale" clip. Thank you for the thousands e-mails of support and words of encouragement. Prosperous life to all who love to laugh!"

Here is Michel Beaudet's reaction to the demand letter* received on April 18, 2007, from Quebec Pluriel demanding to pull the short animated clip "cannibal" off the web.

Michel Beaudet, responded yesterday over the controversy that the clip “is insulting, degrading and inadmissible” during an interview with Le Journal de Montreal. “It is ridiculous and sad”.

For Quebec Pluriel, the insult comes from the association between the "cannibal" in the name of Kunta Kinté.

"Ridiculous"
Reached yesterday, he defended there was no intention to cause harm to anyone. “It is absurd!”. He confirmes receiving the demand letter from Quebec Pluriel on April 18, but quickly admits to have put it aside.

"Paranoiac Vision"
“It is a paranoid vision of a small group of people which does not represent the majority”, Michel Beaudet adds, who acknowledges to have used the name Kunta Kinté without putting any thought in it. “Kunta Kinté, was the hero of Roots, a series which I listened to when I was seven or eight years old”.

The people in charge of the movement, which counts only 30 members, discuss the possibility of addressing the matter to the courts to claim moral and punitive damage.

*A demand letter is a formal notice demanding that the addressee perform a legal obligation, such as rectifying a problem, paying a sum of money or honouring a contractual commitment, on specific terms and within a specified time. The letter gives the recipient a chance to perform the obligation without being taken to court.

Quebec Pluriel wants apologies

Quebec Pluriel, which recently asked for the removal of the clip entitled "the cannibal" on Tetesaclaque.tv now requires public apologies to the Black community.

The organization alleges the clip feeds prejudices against the Blacks. It judges insulting, defamatory, disrespectful and racist the remarks and the representation which are conveyed in the clip. It is particularly offended by the association of cannibalism with the black community and Kunta Kinte which is the central character of the best of the novel Roots. Roots is a 1977 American television miniseries based on Alex Haley's work an afro-American writer.

Since April 18, Quebec Pluriel has asked Salambo Productions and Bell Canada to discontinue the transmission of this clip on support media, Internet and other media.

Are all French speaking canadians represented or tagged worldwide with the humor used by the silly characters? It is quite obvious that the French canadian community has accepted the humor used in all the clips to laugh at oneself. It is too idiotic to even imagine one would interpret it as reality! Then? Remove them all!

Mira Foundation and Têtes à Claques, Woof!

For the first time a Tetes a Claques clip will be seen on Canadian TV. Don't miss the new clip to be aired Sunday, April 22, 2007, between 6:00 p.m. and 10 p.m. on French TV, Television Quatre Saisons (TQS), for MiraStar's Telethon aimed to raise funds for the Mira Foundation.

MIRA pursues the objective to bring greater autonomy to handicapped people and to facilitate their social integration by providing them with dogs that are fully trained to meet the needs of each individual. Many services are offered and trained guide-dogs are made possible for the Blinds free of charge.

The event will be entertaining and informative and to help raise funds many Quebec artists will take part in it. To help raise funds, Michel Beaudet of Tetesaclaques.tv has created an exclusive clip meant for the Foundation. Woof!

According to several reporters that were presented with only few seconds of the clip during the Press Conference in Montreal, the sneak preview was enough to have them laughing!
