Watch out for these heart attack signs in women

Some heart attack symptoms can be more vague and subtle in women than they are in men. Often mistaken for anxiety attacks, the signs are harder to spot and often lead to later diagnosis and treatment. With heart attacks in women under 50 on the rise, specialists are keen to raise awareness about symptoms that shouldn't be overlooked, such as breathing difficulties and nausea. The advice comes ahead of World Heart Day, September 29.

More than 60% of heart attacks in women under 60 are linked to smoking. The risk is further heightened for smokers -- especially those over the age of 35 -- who also take a combined oral contraceptive pill containing the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Heart attacks in women under 50 have tripled in the last 15 years. Here are some of the warning signs that often go unnoticed.

Don't assume you'll have chest pains

"The chest pains that spread to the left arm and jaw, which are typical in men, are absent in women in around 40% of cases," explains the president of the French Federation of Cardiology. In women, these can be replaced by other signs such as nausea, heart palpitations during physical exertion, shortness of breath, pain in the middle of the back and unusual levels of fatigue. When chest pains do occur in women, they're more likely to be felt in the side and they aren't necessarily linked to exertion. Generally speaking, for men over 40 and women over 50, specialists recommend seeing a cardiologist or general practitioner as soon as chest pains are experienced with exertion.

Watch out for unusual difficulty in breathing From anxiety attacks to smoking and asthma, shortness of breath can have many causes, which is why we don't always consider it a serious symptom. "The important thing is to note if the discomfort is new," explains sports cardiologist Dr Uzan, such as after running one and a half miles rather than your usual six, or climbing three flights of stairs that usually pose no problem. The specialist also suggests taking heed of remarks from friends and family, which can help flag up recent changes (e.g., "Keep up! You've got slow these days," "You didn't breathe like that before" etc.). Breathing difficulties when resting are also a warning sign.

Don't ignore palpitations

Although heart palpitations are benign most of the time, they're definitely worth keeping an eye on. These feelings of missed heartbeats or fast thumping (tachycardia) can be a telltale sign of heart disease. They are never normal when experienced with exertion, explains Dr Uzan. You should also see a doctor if your heartbeat is irregular and note the context in which it occurs (mealtimes, strong emotions, physical exertion, etc.).

Dizziness, nausea, fainting

Episodes of fainting or faintness associated with dizzy spells, vomiting, nausea, or loss of consciousness can be linked to heart-attack risks. "Regular" fainting -- called vasovagal syncope -- caused by low blood sugar levels or strong emotions, for example, can usually be felt approaching with symptoms such as sweating and nausea. Fainting episodes linked to the heart come with no warning signs.

Note that persistent digestive problems and unusual feelings of fatigue are symptoms which cardiologists also recommend following up with a doctor.

1. Tiger Temples — Kanchanaburi, Thailand

There’s nothing sacred about the Tiger Temples of Thailand. One look at the living conditions of these distraught cats and you know something’s up—chained down like prisoners, crammed into tiny cages.

That’s unacceptable.

Handlers beat and force the felines to hold fetching poses while tourist take Instagram-worthy pictures—but at what cost? Baby cubs aren’t spared from the torment either. In fact, the temple makes the most of its earnings by letting tourist bottle-fed the little ones over, and over, and over again till milk is spewing from their mouths.

Oh yeah, and all those ‘donations’ you contribute to the temple? They don’t go to their conservation either. Big surprise. While it’s closed now, we’d never know if one might just spring up once the outrage is forgotten and over.

2. Dog Meat Festival — Yulin, China

Thousands of terrified canines are butchered and consumed each year during the horrific 10-day festival in Yulin. What makes the event even more controversial is that there are no legal dog farms or dog slaughterhouses in China. Yet, more than 10,000 dogs are killed each year.

Which begs the question… where did all the dogs come from?

Most have reportedly been kidnapped or stolen from their original owners, sparking further outrage from dog lovers and animal rights groups alike.

Long standing tradition or not, these pets are family, not food. And despite widespread criticism, the murder of man’s best friend continues to this day.

3. Dolphin shows — SeaWorld

At first glance, these friendly mammals may seem content with their living conditions. But a dolphin’s smile is its greatest deception.

Let’s face it, animals are not meant to be held in captivity.

Dolphins from the wild aren’t used to swimming within the confines of a tiny concrete tank. The stress causes them to suffer from incredible amounts of physical and behavioural problems, going so far as committing acts of self-mutilation.

Performing cheap tricks and jumps can also cause fatal injuries to the dolphins. The powerful documentary “The Cove” sheds some light on the plight of dolphins in captivity that every animal-lover should be aware of.

4. Bullfighting — Spain

Here’s what happens during a bullfight (and why it needs to be banned):

Two days before the fight, bulls are severely tortured to weaken them for the event. Wet newspaper is stuffed into their ears; vaseline is rubbed into their eyes to blur their vision; cotton is stuffed up their nostrils to restrict breathing; drugs are injected into them to slow them down; the list goes on…

After a long ordeal of attacks, the matador delivers the final degradation with the ‘moment of truth’, or ‘suerte suprema’, severing the aorta with one swift thrust of his sword, releasing the beast mercifully into death…

Well, not exactly… in most cases, the bull is often still alive. They’ve been wounded so badly that they can no longer stand and starts vomiting blood before having their ears and tails are cut off as prizes and dragged off to the slaughterhouse to be skinned. Even then, they may still be breathing…

5. Elephant Rides — Southeast Asia

Here’s the thing about wild elephants—they don’t like being ridden on.

In order for that to happen, baby elephants are subjected to a brutal taming process called Phajaan, or ‘the crush’, to completely ‘break their spirit’. The heinous act involves beating, burning, stabbing, and starving the poor animal into submission.

Even after they’ve been tamed, the tortured elephants are forced to work non-stop. Some even dying from exhaustion.

Some other grisly ‘celebrations’ include:

Goat Throwing Festival (Zamora, Spain)The title of this barbaric festival speaks for itself. Thankfully this absurdly cruel practice has since been banned, with festival-goers using an effigy of a stuffed goat instead for their goat-throwing purposes.

Artemisia Mountain Festival (Liuzhou, China)A bloody 500-year-old tradition of pitting two stallions against each other in a gladiator-style fight to the death. Savage.

It’s hard to believe such vicious spectacles still exist in today’s ‘civilised’ society. Being responsible travellers who are aware of such atrocities is the least we can do to help prevent more abuse towards our animal friends.

Growing up, most of us have always been incredibly fascinated with witchcraft and the world of magic, be it the supernatural thrillers or the fantasies of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

The aspect of magic and rituals always brings a sense of mystery into the realm of reality that we live in, as evident by horror films such as the recently released “Blair Witch”.

The genre is one that story-writers and fimmakers continue to publish and produce. While some of their tales may be made up, the concept of magic and sorcery has always been around, as can be seen from some of the following beliefs still found in Asia.

1) Gong Tau, China and South East Asia

If you’ve ever heard someone say a person has “Tio Gong Tau”, it means that he or she might have been the victim of a supernatural attack.

Gong Tau is the term used in Hokkien, Teochew or Cantonese when someone is suspected of having been attacked by black magic, (called Jiang Tou in Mandarin), and is believed to be a fusion of poison skills which originated in Yunnan, China, and witchcraft seen in South East Asia.

Gong Tau is usually sought to either seek revenge, resolve relationship issues or even to assist with money problems.

It can be practiced in two different forms - non-spiritual or spiritual.

Non-spiritual practices involve having magic potions mixed into the victim’s food or drinks for them to consume. Once the targeted victim either eats or drinks the poison, they enable the sorcerers to control them from afar.

The spiritual practices, on the other hand, require a Taoist sorcerer who can summon ghosts or spirits or even demons. These summoned entities are then sent to possess or harm or disturb the targeted victim.

The catch is that the caster needs to have a couple of details at hand, such as the intended victim’s date of birth, or personal belongings, hair or even fingernails from the victim. According to practitioners, Gong Tau magic can be advanced by combining it with other rituals too.

2) Kulam, the Philippines

Kulam is a form of sorcery that can be found in the Philippines, centring around islands like Siquijor and Talalora.

The witches that practice this magic are called mangkukulam, and they are often feared by people due to their reputation.

Kulam is heavily influenced by voodoo, which involves utilising a doll to target their victims. The witches also have to obtain a personal belonging of their victim for their magic to work.

According to rumours, the more important the item is for the victim, the more powerful the magic will be. For maximum effect, hair, spit or even blood from the victim is supposedly ideal.

Once a witch has obtained the required items, he or she will tie a string around the doll and recite an incantation. This awakens the spirits and allows the witch to have full control over the victim.

Witches then have the power of hurting their victims through the doll. It is suspected that the only method of getting away from this voodoo curse is by either removing the string from around the doll or by killing the witch.

There are also potions such as those seen in the picture, which are from the Siquijor. Some are used to create healing magic, so drinking the potion or rubbing it on one’s body supposedly eases physical pain. Others, such “love” potions, are meant to make the victim fall in love with someone.

3) Bomoh, Malaysia and Indonesia

If you’ve grown up in South East Asia, you’ve probably heard the term “bomoh”.

Definied as a Malay shaman, the original role of a bomoh was to be a healer, an expert on the medicinal herbs that could be found in the region, as well as Malay geomancy.

Bomohs were also known to enter cemeteries to summon spirits to aid them, as spirits have powers beyond a normal person, such as being able to heal or investigate supernatural events.

Supposedly, the bomoh has to make a deal with a spirit before it will follow through with his request. Sometimes the bomoh will pick the spirit he wants, while sometimes the spirit will pick the bomoh. Some bomohs work with different spirits, others choose to work with the same one time and time again.

Bomohs will usually request spirits to either find a missing person, heal someone sick, or discover the reason bad events are happening to a victim.

In one of the more recent incidents, a Malaysian bomoh was seen performing rituals at Kuala Lumpur International Airport after the disappearance of flight MH370 (above).

4) Suangi, West PapuaIn the Indonesian province of West Papua, there is a belief that males in the society have the possibility of being possessed and becoming a cannibalistic witch.

An accused male is commonly called a suangi, and is rumoured to have a craving for eating the blood and organs of his chosen victims.

After a suangi is done eating his victims’ insides, he will then stuff the body with grass and leaves.

Supposedly, suangis believe that by consuming their victims this way they also manage to eat the victim’s soul, while the victim returns to his or her family in a zombified state.

If the family of the victim manages to track down the suangi that “ate” their family member, they will hunt him down and kill him (and sometimes eat him) with the belief that the soul of the victim will be released.

Spencer Elden was just a few months old when his parents got a call from underwater photographer Kirk Weddle, who asked if he could use their newborn baby as part of a photoshoot for an up-and-coming band called Nirvana. At the time, Elden’s father helped with sets, custom rigging and props for photo shoots, which is how he got to know Weddle.

Initially, Weddle tried to photograph babies at a swimming class, but none of those images fit what Geffen Records was looking for, so they wound up choosing one of the stills that Weddle took of Elden. Later on, a fish hook with a dollar bill was eventually added, to make it look as if the baby was swimming towards it. Elden’s parents were reportedly paid only $200, and the shoot lasted around 15 seconds.

Last year, Weddle told TIME, “It was a great concept—a baby underwater, unable to breathe, going after money on a fishhook. After Nevermind was a big hit, they came back to me to shoot the band underwater.”

After the album’s surprisingly successful release, the image would go down in music history as one of the most recognizable album covers of all time, along with Pink Floyd’sDark Side of the Moon and the Beatles’ Abbey Road.

“Looking back, it feels kind of stupid doing interviews about it, because I had nothing to do with it, but a lot to do with it all at the same time,” says Elden, now 25. “It’s a really weird feeling being a part of someone else’s momentum—being caught up in this wake of stuff.”

NASA set to reveal 'surprising' activity on Jupiter's moon

There's something going on beneath the surface of Jupiter's icy moon Europa. But what?

NASA teased a "surprising" announcement for Monday, based on Hubble Space Telescope images of the celestial body, which many experts believe could contain a subsurface ocean, even possibly some form of life.

The US space agency has already proclaimed that Europa has "strong evidence for an ocean of liquid water beneath its crust and which could host conditions favorable for life."

At Monday's announcement, "astronomers will present results from a unique Europa observing campaign that resulted in surprising evidence of activity that may be related to the presence of a subsurface ocean," it said in a statement.

The announcement will be made at a news conference at 2 pm (1800 GMT) Monday featuring Paul Hertz, NASA's director of astrophysics, and William Sparks, an astronomer with the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.

NASA announced last year that it intends to send a robotic spacecraft, equipped with a suite of scientific instruments, to circle Europa in the 2020s.

In 2012, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope "observed water vapor above the south polar region of Europa," suggesting water plumes may be erupting from the moon, the space agency said.

If those plumes are confirmed, and if they are found to originate from a subsurface ocean, scientists hope the spacecraft could study their chemical makeup, revealing characteristics of the water without having to drill through ice.

Jupiter, nicknamed the king of the solar system, is surrounded by more than 50 moons.

Last year, data from the Hubble Space Telescope confirmed that Jupiter's largest moon, Ganymede, has an underground ocean that contains more water than Earth's, broadening the hunt for places in the solar system where life might be able to exist.

In the case of Ganymede, aurorae -- displays of light in the atmosphere -- glimpsed by the Hubble Space Telescope allowed scientists to confirm the long-suspected subsurface saltwater there.

Because aurorae are controlled by a moon or planet's magnetic field, observing changes in their behavior can lead to better understanding of what exists under the surface.

The solar system's largest planet, Jupiter is the fifth from the Sun.

NASA's $1.1 billion Juno spacecraft successfully slipped into orbit around the planet in July on a 20-month mission to learn more about how the gas giant formed, and to probe the origins of the solar system.

The man behind the banana sculpture that becomes an internet sensation is non other than Mr. Keisuke Yamada of Japan. He carved his designs using spoon and toothpick.
He really enjoys making a banana come to life by sculpting faces, usually it takes him 30 minutes to finish the sculpture then took a photograph of it and post it online. He eats all the bananas afterwards before it rots.

Luis Tagle as the new Achbishop of Manila - a Caviteño

MANILA, October 13, 2011— Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Imus Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle, a known theologian, as the new archbishop of Manila.

At 54, Tagle will succeed Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales who served the influential post for eight years.

Archbishop-elect Tagle’s appointment was officially announced in Rome on October 13 at 12:00 noon (6:00 pm, Manila time).

The information was officially received by the Media Office of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Thursday in a communiqué from the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila.

“I write to inform you that the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has appointed His Excellency Most Reverend Luis Antonio Tagle, until now Bishop of Imus, as Archbishop of Manila,” said Monsignor Gabor Pinter, Charge D’ Affaires.

Rosales, who just turned 79 years old last August 16, earlier said that the Vatican has already accepted his resignation early this year and was just waiting for his successor to be named.

The cardinal submitted his resignation in 2007 when he turned 75, the mandatory retirement age for prelates, but the pontiff extended his term indefinitely.

Born in Manila on June 21, 1957, Tagle took his Philosophy and Theology at the Ateneo De Manila University’s San Jose Major Seminary.

He was ordained to the priesthood on February 27, 1982, at the age of 25.

From 1985 to 1992, he was sent for further studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. where he earned his Doctorate in Sacred Theology.

Since 1997, Tagle is a member of the International Theological Commission of the Vatican. In 1998, he was an expert at the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Asia that took place in Rome.

On December 12, 2001, he was ordained Bishop of Imus. Since then, his activities have been as numerous as in the past. He travels throughout the country in answer to many invitations as a speaker.

At the Synod of Bishops held in Rome in 2005, he was elected member of the post-synodal Council and assistant to Cardinal Angelo Scola, general reporter of this Synod.

Tagle is currently the chairman of the Commission on Doctrine of the Faith of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

Eventhough that typhoon Nesat lowers intensity over Metro Manila, still, heavy rains and floods brought damage to many residents and motorists.

"A total of 1,355 families/6,112 persons were affected in 38 barangays, 12 municipalities, 1 city, 5 provinces in Regions II, III, IV-A, and V," it added. And still counting...

Typhoon "Pedring" (International name: Nesat) has maintained its strength with maximum sustained winds of 120 kph near the center and a gustiness of up to 150 kph, but may be out of the Philippine area of responsibility (Par) by Wednesday, the state weather bureau said.

Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services (Pagasa) has already lowered public storm signals in several areas, noting that a "gradual improving weather" may be seen late Wednesday afternoon.

The weather bureau is however monitoring a new weather disturbance, which may be named "Quiel" once it enters the Par.

At least seven people have been killed due to Pedring, according to reports.

Signal # 3 is up in Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, and Pangasinan

Yuwie is a social networking site that pays its users for online activity, the more you use the site - the more money they will pay you, is it too good to be true?!
Yuwie pays some of its users but not all until the owner shut down the site for the reason: "Yuwie hasn't been profitable for a while, and because of that I decided to shut the site down."; when you visit the official website this notification appear and you cannot proceed to the site anymore 'till the worst day comes to yuwie fanatics - "THE SITE IS DEAD!"

I admit I joined yuwie because I like PYRAMID SCHEME and I have nothing to lose. It is fun watching your tree/ pyramid grow and meeting lots of new strangers that spam all the time with their other money making online schemes and continues recruiting people to join other programs. It is not real anymore, the only reason you are being friend with is the fact that they earn for any unnecessary activity they have to make. It is exciting at the beginning but in the end it is depressing. I think this is how the owner feels about it. So if you want to hang-out and make friends go signed-up to a more real social networking site that has a higher global ranking.

A Robot That Flies like a Seagull a.k.a. SmartBird

That is, until MARKUS FISCHER and his Team at Festo builty SMARTBIRD, a large, lightweight robot, modelled on a seagull. A fascinating demoof the robot in action can be viewed at TEDGlobal 2011.

Many robots can fly but this one can navigate to the air by flapping its wings.

► Later part of the project is on how to build a wings for humans. It is a fact that a metal bird / object can fly by flapping wings why not on humans. The gears are very strong and give a lift with every cycle, definitely genius, all we have to do is calculate the wing span for humans and how to attach it on our back (not surgically).

Maybe after 10 years or so it will be out the market: "WINGS FOR SALE 30% OFF".

Wow imagine no traffic, no pollution, fresh air, and no costly fare. This will revolutionize the way of living. Keep it up Markus!

Orlando, FL

Family-friendly Orlando is a regular front-runner on Hotwire's Travel Value Index (which annually evaluates cities based on their rates, available "discounts, affordable entertainment and overall appeal"). While pricey Disney World is the main attraction, Orlando does feature a variety of cheaper -- and even free -- attractions. O-Town's hotel and airfare rates haven't dropped since this time last year, but the city's already low prices continually allow thrifty travelers to stretch their vacation budget. And as the new school year draws nearer, more deals become available for last-minute getaways.

For more savings… Purchase combo tickets. If you must visit the theme parks, you can save several hundred dollars by investing in Flex Tickets that grant you entry to five or six parks -- including Universal Studios and SeaWorld -- for a little more than you'd spend on one individual entry.

As the summer dies down, so do the crowds, leaving plenty of hotel deals.

Chicago, IL

Late summer and early fall is a great time to visit the Windy City: The summer tourists are trickling out and the notorious Midwestern winter has yet to hit. According to Hotwire's Year-Over-Year analysis, Chicago's hotel rates have dropped nine percent since this time last year. And since Virgin America began air service to the city in May, airfare is experiencing a drop as well (prices fell eight percent since last summer). Plus, as the warm-weather convention season comes to a close, Chicago will boast great deals for leisure travelers.

For more savings… Invest in a Chicago CityPass or a Go Chicago Card. Both of these programs provide significant discounts on admission to some of the city's top things to do, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum.

Summer's high temperatures and chance of showers keep Mexico's Caribbean coast relatively tourist-free.

Riviera Maya, Mexico

Eastern Mexico is entering its annual tourism slump; most tourists are deterred by high temperatures and frequent rainfall. However, travelers who visit in August and early September can skirt the sprinkles while nabbing excellent deals to some of the country's most popular destinations, including Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. According to Hotwire, hotel prices have dropped eight percent since 2010, with five-star rooms going for $135 a night, on average. And you can find flights from the U.S. for as low as $250. And to top it all off, you won't have to pay a cent to enjoy this region's miles of soft sand and Caribbean Sea views.

For more savings… Pay with pesos. Although many restaurants and shops in this region accept United States dollars, vendors are more willing to negotiate a lower price with you if you use pesos.

Aspen, CO

Aspen's reputation as a high-end ski destination means warm-weather travelers can find great discounts. Hotwire's Year-Over-Year analysis shows that average hotel rates have dropped 12 percent since last summer while airfare has experienced a four-percent dip. And the best of the Rockies -- outdoor activities like hiking and biking -- won't cost you a penny. For those of you planning a September trip, make sure to pack your camera: This is when the region's numerous aspen trees don their golden autumn foliage.

For more savings… Opt for a seat at the bar rather than a table in the restaurant. Many restaurants in Aspen offer discounted lunch and dinner menus at the bar. Sure, the choices may be more limited than in the dining room, but it's all coming from the same kitchen.

August and September yield slashed rates on some of the city's most desirable hotels.

Phoenix, AZ

Like Orlando, Phoenix is frequently listed on Hotwire's Travel Value Index due to its consistently low summer and fall rates. Tourists generally steer clear during these months, frightened away by the Valley of the Sun's triple-digit temps. But air conditioning is never hard to find, and September will bring about more temperate weather. While this year's hotel prices mimic last year's -- averaging $55 a night -- plane tickets have experienced a six-percent drop over the past 12 months. But the deals won't last long; Phoenix is quickly approaching its high-season, preparing to welcome cold-weather escapists.

For more savings… Fill the tank before you leave town. If you're relying on a car as your primary means of transportation, you'll find that gas is cheapest in Phoenix proper than it is in less-central areas like Scottsdale and Glendale.

Canadians are taking advantage of their dollar's newfound strength and spending their vacations abroad, leaving cities like Victoria with plenty of hotel rooms to fill.

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

The increasing strength of the Canadian dollar has prompted our northern neighbors to travel abroad more often than they did before. This developing trend has driven hotel prices down in Canadian cities like Victoria. In fact, Hotwire's Year-Over-Year analysis shows that room rates in the British Columbia city are down 10 percent since last summer. But bargains aren't the only reason Victoria makes our list: The city boasts expansive beaches, massive parks and a lively central square, all of which are free to explore.

For more savings… Avoid the currency exchange office. Victoria businesses accept most major credit and debit cards, meaning that you can avoid the cost of exchanging money. It's a good idea to have some cash on you, but you can simply use an ATM to withdraw.

Many of the city's most popular attractions, including Centennial Olympic Park won't cost you a penny to visit.

Atlanta, GA

The Big Peach is known for having some of the best discounts around. And although the summer and early fall are prime times for business and group travel, many hotels still boast remarkably low prices. While there hasn't been a significant decrease in room rates since last year, a night in Atlanta costs only $62 on average. Airfare, however, has dropped a significant seven percent over the past 12 months. Plus, some of the city's most popular sites -- including the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and Piedmont Park -- are completely free to visit.

For more savings… Consider the Atlanta CityPass. Although it may seem like a lot of money, this pass allows access to five of the city's pricier things to do, including the World of Coca Cola and the Georgia Aquarium.
