If you’re planning on setting up a hosting service, it’s completely normal to want the most benefit out of it, and to be able to develop it in a profitable way. There are many factors and variables that you can toy with until you get a perfect balance between investments and income, and one of the best ways to tip that balance in the right direction, is VPS hosting. It’s the cheapest way to offer your services to a multitude of people, without having to spend too much on actual computers, unlike other hosting schemes where you generally need to dedicate a separate machine for every new client.

Through VPS hosting, you can run several instances of an operating system on one computer, and grant your users complete access to one (or more) of those systems. It works in a useful manner both ways – you don’t have to spend a lot, and thus the client doesn’t either, but they still get great service.

A common concern when planning on developing such a setup, is what operating system to use. The truth is, any of the popular ones will serve you great, but each one is suited for a specific purpose. Your choice should depend entirely on what you need most in your system, and how you’re planning on running the company technology-wise. Linux is a good choice when your primary concerns are stability, security, and low resource use.

Though it’s a bit more difficult to set up a Linux system for VPS hosting, it gets pretty easy and straightforward afterwards. The most widely used software for the purpose is VMware. There are many factors which contribute to its popularity, but the major ones are its ease of use, flexibility, and stability. It receives continuous support from its developers and each new version makes it more and more polished. The best part is that it’s completely free to use for any purposes. This is important to consider if you want to profit as much as possible from your hosting service, while keeping your investments down to a minimum.

You may also want to install a web hosting control panel. It’s actually a pretty much standard function in hosting services nowadays, so if you want to display professionalism, this is an absolute must. ISPConfig is a great tool that will easily perform the task of adding, managing and giving control over multiple websites, making the technicalities behind the hosting a breeze. Your users will appreciate having a tool to do their management easily without having to install one themselves. The program is free, and actually open source, and it’s widely renowned as one of the best utilities of its kind.

Once you’re done setting up the box, you can start giving away user accounts for it to your customers. Make sure you carefully plan the system’s capabilities though – decide how much processor time, memory and disk space you’d like to give each user, and calculate the maximum number of users per machine accordingly. Use the one that bottlenecks the system as a measurement, since it will be the one to “run out” first.

When it comes to buying web hosting, people generally fall into two categories depending on their needs – there are those who need high performance for applications which utilize a lot of system resources, and those who just need something that works and is easier on the wallet as well. While the first group’s needs are easily solved by standard dedicated hosting, there is also a perfect solution for the others – VPS hosting.

The general idea behind this system is that instead of allocating one whole machine for each of their users, the hosting company run several virtual operating systems on the same machine, and separate resources between them equally. The result is that from a user’s point of view, they get a completely dedicated environment with their own resources and everything, and it all comes at a really attractive price. The low costs come from the obvious fact that the hosting company needs to use less physical computers for a set number of clients, so they can invest their funds more efficiently.

The advantages of this are numerous – the most obvious being that you’re not forced to share any resources with the rest of the hosting company’s customers, thus getting more processing power and memory available for your own website’s needs. And you’ll never be able to find such high level of control and personalization over the system for that price in any other type of dedicated hosting.

VPS is becoming increasingly more popular amongst hosting providers worldwide, as it is a financially efficient solution that provides customers with great results, compared to the cost of running a single dedicated server per customer. Furthermore, it allows for greater flexibility – if a user, for example, wishes to run several websites and easily manage them on the same machine, controlling the resource sharing between them – this is possible and made easy by VPS technology.

Another common use for VPS servers is security testing – if a website is developing new additions to its services, which are prone to security flaws, the administrator can easily setup a second “mock” website for testing purposes, running parallel to the original one. He/she can then use that second website to fully test his new service for any problems and security holes, before opening it to the public.

An interesting twist to this technique is using a VPS-hosted website (or websites) as “honeypots”, running intentionally vulnerable services to lure potential attackers into attempting to crack them. While this can be done on a regular dedicated server, running it on a VPS allows the user to do it quicker and in a more efficient manner.

While a dedicated server is sometimes an absolute necessity, especially with high-demanding web applications, VPS hosting is a unique and highly efficient solution for the general user, and it’s constantly proving itself as a clever way of minimizing your costs and maintenance time for running your website and optimizing it properly.

Picking the appropriate environment for your hosting needs is a necessity if you want to keep to certain standards of reliability. There are so many operating systems to choose from, and each one offers a unique set of advantages and disadvantages which make it stand out from the rest. You can hardly call one specific system “the best”, because there will always be another one that performs a certain task better. But you can surely pick a best in some specific niche, so in the end, the most appropriate system for you is the one that can cater to your own needs and provides you with what you require.

Linux has always been a popular choice for hosting purposes. Long before Microsoft managed to develop Windows to a state where it’s actually a viable alternative for hosting, many Linux distributions were already offering the perfect solution, coming out as a result of many factors, the most important ones being security, stability, and ease of update management. Debian has taken ground as one of the better Linux distributions, appealing to the crowd of people who like to be able to update their systems constantly without making it a complicated process.

Debian offers many advantages if you decide to integrate it in your VPS hosting environment. The main one, which is usually the sole reason people pick the distribution over others, is that it can be seamlessly upgraded to a newer version, or subversion, without requiring too much intervention from the user. Additionally, it allows that to be done in many ways, both offline and online. Since you’re using the distribution for VPS hosting purposes, you’re probably not interested in its capabilities to update software without requiring an Internet connection.

Through its online update system, you can install an entire system update, and bring the distribution to a new version, without needing to shut it down or even reboot it once. This is a huge advantage if stability and uptime are your primary concerns. Because of this feature, you can easily install critical updates and hotfixes for new exploits as they are discovered, without having to compromise your service’s availability in the process. And thanks to Linux’s generally intuitive program management, you can automate the bulk of this task easily, so your system can always be up to date without you having to watch over it all the time.

Debian is the perfect choice for those who’re looking for security as the biggest advantage of the system they’re using. Because all of your software will be constantly up-to-date, the services you’re running on your VPS hosting will never be compromised, as they will always be supplied with the latest updates and fixes necessary to block attack attempts. Because of this, Debian quickly established for itself a name of security and reliability in the Linux community, and quickly became one of the preferred choices for server hosting and management. Like most other Linux distributions, it’s free as well, so it won’t be a burden on you financially.

VPS Hosting is a really convenient method of providing hosting services to your customers at highly competitive rates. Due to the way the whole system works, you can easily supply endless virtual machines so that each of your clients can have their own dedicated “computer” to do their job on, while you won’t have to invest so much in hardware to meet the demand. It’s a wonderful way of managing your finances efficiently, and providing quality service at rates no dedicated hosting company can really beat.

Part of the beauty in the whole setup lies in the flexibility it offers. You can set up a VPS service on a wide range of operating systems, and you generally have a good choice when it comes to what software you can use. Choosing the operating system should be based on a few important factors, and it all comes down to what you want to do with the machine. Or, in other words, what are the specific strong points you’d like to accent on, and what you’re prepared to sacrifice. Every operating system has its advantages and disadvantages.

Windows can be a good choice for a professional hosting service. It has many advantages, mainly in the support department, and the tools available for it. Even though the operating system is known for having some security issues in the past, that’s all behind it now, and it’s currently a really stable and reliable operating system, and with enough knowledge, it can become the perfect base for a quality VPS hosting service. Installing and setting up the operating system itself is a breeze, as Windows comes with a very user-friendly interface, and constantly available support. From then on, you should proceed with the installation of the appropriate software packages and their configuration.

There are two main options for Windows VPS hosting available – VMWare, which is a free tool that emulates operating systems in multiple instances, or Microsoft’s own Virtual PC. VPC is usually a better choice for Windows, since it’s designed specifically for that platform (while VMWare is a cross-platform software), and it receives the same kind of support from Microsoft that Windows itself does. Both are easy to install and configure though, so you can’t really go wrong with making either choice.

Like with everything, there are some downsides to using Windows for your VPS hosting needs. The main and most obvious one, is the cost. Unlike Linux and other popular operating systems, Windows isn’t free, and it costs a good sum of money, especially if you’re planning on using it on multiple computers. Longevity of operation is sometimes also an issue, as Linux is generally more suited for working for extended periods of time without needing to reboot. That doesn’t mean that Windows is completely unsuited for this kind of operation, but it may suffer some performance hits after a certain timespan has passed, so you may need to attend to it a bit more. On the other hand, Microsoft will always offer their support for you as a paying customer, and that’s really an advantage to consider if you expect to reach some problematic situations down the road.

When it comes to cheap hosting services, you really can’t go wrong by picking a VPS hosting provider. This method has proven itself countless times to be the most efficient way of getting a high quality hosting service at very low rates. It is the perfect solution for those who don’t need a powerhouse of a server, and can manage their resources efficiently. VPS hosting provides numerous advantages over standard dedicated hosters, as it allows for the operating system to run safely while being separate from other systems, with its own resources allocated to it.

After you’ve acquired the hosting services of your choice, the next step is to pick an operating system to run on the VPS. Some hosting companies will force a specific system upon you, in which case you’ll have no choice but to accept that and use the system you’re given. If you’re presented with a choice though, FreeBSD is an option you should really take time to consider. This system hides a lot of potential, despite not being so well known with the more common users. It has a long-running history of dedicated development, and is a popular choice for hosting purposes.

While FreeBSD is commonly mistaken for a Linux distribution, it’s far from such. It’s actually a completely independent operating system, and while it has its roots in the same place as Linux – UNIX – the FreeBSD developers took a completely different direction when they were building their system. It has a lot of similarities with Linux, namely the names of most programs, command line parameters and such, but it also has many differences, and what’s more important, many advantages.

FreeBSD is easy to install if you’re familiar with Linux type installers. Its installation procedure will present you with a completely working system in the end, unlike some Linux distributions, which require additional setup after the installation. This makes it perfect for VPS hosting purposes, since you can quickly drop many instances of the system on various accounts on the host, which is especially useful for sandbox testing – that is, setting up a system which will be used to test some new technology, which is potentially harmful to the operating system. Because of the way VPS hosting works, you can safely perform this on a VPS operating system without worrying about damaging it.

It’s also suited for the purpose of VPS hosting, because it’s heavily geared towards network administrators. Many of FreeBSD’s core features are aimed at improving the management capabilities of the system, and it’s trivial for any administrators to keep the system running optimally and perform network-related tasks with ease. Sure, OpenBSD may offer a bit more in terms of security (especially code security), but FreeBSD remains more convenient to use, and it’s still times more scalable than any other competitive operating system – both free and commercial. It’s highly useful to Linux users as well, since Linux applications can run on FreeBSD without trouble, and that’s not something to leave without consideration.

If you need to host your website, you’ve probably done a good amount of research on your available options already. And if you’re not very experienced with these things, chances are you’re baffled at the myriad of suggestions. Every corner of the Internet makes great, tempting offers, and you can’t help but wonder where the true gems are among this whole bunch of options. Before you step forward and make your choice though, consider your goals carefully. Sometimes, you may end up paying for a lot more than you end up needing, and you feel like you’ve wasted your money in the long run.

Sometimes, going for the free options is not a decision you will regret. Sure, when you hear the word “free” in today’s market, all sorts of suspicions and presumptions flood your head. We’re taught to associate free products with inferior quality, undeserving our attention. But often, because of this, you may end up missing on some really fantastic offers. Take a second and do a rational overview of your plan. What do you want to achieve with your website? Will it require a lot of resources? Is it going to bring heavy traffic that will require a lot of bandwidth to cope with? There are all sorts of details, both minor and major, to think about when you want to launch a website.

And if you analyze all of them carefully, you may even reach the conclusion that all your needs are covered by a free service on the market! VPS hosting is already cheap by itself, because of the way it works – it allows the hosting provider to give you access to an entirely dedicated operating system, while they’re actually running a few of those on the same box. As a result, you end up sharing a computer with a few other clients, but you never realize this, because from your point of view, it seems as if you’ve been given your own dedicated machine.

It’s already cheap enough to buy a VPS hosting service, but some companies offer it for free too. Sure, as with any free hosting, there are limitations on how much you can spread out across the system. The basic idea remains though, and that is you have a completely separate and independent environment for your development and hosting needs. Usually, the limitations come in the form of reduced processor time and/or system memory, and of course disk space. But if you’re not going to run a really heavy website, you may not even feel any of those restrictions are in place!

It all boils down to thoughtful planning. It’s not hard to make a good choice and save a lot of money – sometimes without even spending anything – and especially if you’re using the Internet to promote your business (or even run it entirely), you’ll feel the benefits in the long run, when you’ll be able to quickly decide on the best solutions for your business needs.

Hosting a website can be a burdensome task for some, especially those who lack a higher level of experience with working with web-related services. Newbies are usually bombarded with suggestions and recommendations, each more appealing than the other, and even a person with relatively good knowledge on the matter can become confused in this whirlwind of choices. And of course, everyone’s always looking for the best deal in terms of balance between price and service quality. And when it comes to price, VPS hosting is hardly beatable in that aspect. Being such a financially efficient solution, it’s often a tempting choice for many people.

One common question arises in those cases – since the price is so low, compared to a dedicated hosting, where is the catch? Well, to put it simply, a VPS hosting customer will be sharing the same machine with a few of the hosting provider’s other customers. Due to the nature of the VPS technology however, this will not be noticeable, since each user is allocated their own virtual operating system – meaning that from the client’s view, it looks just like a dedicated hosting. You get your own allocated memory, which you don’t share with anyone – this is a huge advantage compared to some hosting providers which tend to use the same machine for a number of customers, resulting in those customers being forced to share the system’s memory. And because the hosting provider is able to effectively give you a dedicated machine without needing to actually dedicate one to you, they can provide the service at much lower rates than standard dedicated hosting allows.

Low price always comes with a reason though, and VPS hosting is no exception. There are some disadvantages to consider about this type of hosting. The major one is resource limitation. Since the hosting provider is running several virtual operating systems on the same machine, they need to separate this machine’s resources between users. While you’re still getting your own share of those resources and won’t have anyone interfering with them, you’re going to get them in limited amounts. Processor time, hard disk space, and memory – you’re going to get much less of those than a dedicated hosting provider will offer you. Because of this, VPS hosting is usually not a viable option for resource-heavy applications, like websites utilizing large databases and constantly running through them.

Like everything on the market, VPS hosting comes with advantages and disadvantages, making it the perfect choice for one person, but a terrible one for another. It all boils down to your requirements – if you’re going to run a resource-hungry application and need every available byte and processor tick, then you should probably look into a dedicated hosting provider. If, however, you want to run a static website with no heavy elements, and cost is your primary concern, VPS hosting is probably the best solution for your money.

If you’re using a VPS hosting service, you will usually get access to different operating systems, varying from company to company. Some service providers will give you the option to pick the operating system of your choice, so you can perform your tasks in an environment you’re familiar with. In this case, it’s best to take your time and evaluate your options carefully, so that you feel as satisfied as possible in the long run. Picking the right operating system isn’t done by an universal rule, it always depends on several factors. There are different types of services you may want to run on your VPS, and each one of them will have is own unique set of requirements towards the environment.

If you want to use a Linux distribution to do the job, Ubuntu can be a great choice in many cases. It’s light, stable, and popular. While the last part may not sound like an obvious advantage, it’s important to consider because more popularity often means better support through community development, and such. As most other Linux distributions, Ubuntu is completely free, so you won’t have to worry about licensing issues. You can find a lot of free pieces of software which had proven their worth throughout time as well, and the entire operating system is surrounded by this idea of freedom of choice and user control over the system’s functionality.

Whether it’s setting up a web server, a sandbox for hazard testing, or some other purpose which requires the use of a virtual private server, Ubuntu has the tools to streamline the process and make it easier for you. Some of the distribution’s specific advantages include the ability to easily update any installed software packages, directly through a master server. This is a huge benefit when it comes to support and stability, because it allows you to keep everything you’re running up to date, and operating smoothly. The package manager can not only search for updates for your programs and install them, but it can also download entire program packages and take care of their configuration for you, all with a few commands in the console. It’s a true gem of accessibility, and it’s one of the main reasons so many people choose Ubuntu as their preferred system of choice.

Should you run into any problems and find yourself locked out of your VPS, don’t panic. There are many ways to recover from such problems. The first thing you should try, is to go into your VPS manager and do a hard reboot on that system. This will simulate unplugging it and resetting it physically, and more often than not, it solves any problems. If that doesn’t work, many VPS managers offer the option to recover a corrupted VPS system, so try that as well. And if all else fails, there’s always the “rebuild” option, which will completely erase the operating system and rebuild it from scratch. You will lose all of your data, but at least your system will be back on track.

I recently had the experience of signing up for and trying Namecheap VPS Hosting. So far everything has been very positive. I chose CentOS for my Linux Distribution and went to work setting up PHP, MySQL, and Apache. I used “yum install” for the setup and went to work. I can report no problems with setup.

So far I haven’t put much of a load on the server, but it looks like it’s managing to due the job. The package I chose was for $29.99 and included 30GB of hard drive space and 512mb RAM. For what I plan on hosting there, it should be more the sufficient.

NameCheap has proven reliable

I’ve used NameCheap for the last few years for domain registration and have always been pleased with their service. I can only remember one outage of DNS (due to a DDOS attack), but they communicated what the problem was and fixed it in a reasonable amount of time. Whatever measures they took that day against the attack worked, because I have seen any issues since. For a low cost registrar, they seem very into customer service and their servers work fast. Plus I like their DNS control panel better than any other I’ve tested.

If you’re looking for an affordable hosting solution with power and configurability, a VPS might be the way to go.

One thing is certain though. VPS doesn’t appear to be able to handle the strain of a large production website. At least this is true on the smaller offerings. If you plan on going with VPS for a website with heavy traffic, either go with a fully dedicated server, or go with a souped-up configuration. After that, it’s simply a matter of how much you tweak the performance.

It’s easy to understand why you’d like to use Linux for your VPS. Linux servers are really coming into their own, and it’s likely as a system administrator that you’re already familiar with server maintenance on a Linux server and you’d like to stick with what you know.

Plus, there’s cost. Linux servers loaded with open source software applications can easily exceed the performance of proprietary operating systems, at a fraction of the cost.

The best webhost of Linux VPS is the one who is an expert

Linux based Virtual Private Servers come in most “flavors” of Linux. There are solutions for everything from Red Hat and Debian through Slackware or Ubuntu. As usual, it will depend on what you’re looking for to find just the right provider. Web host providers that handle many different versions of Linux Virtual Private Servers might not have mastery of any. You know the old phrase, “Jack of all trades, master of none?” That could hold true for Linux web hosting. The best webhost for Linux VPS is the one who really knows the field. Once your server is deployed and in production, it is no longer the time for experimentation.

One thing is certain, Linux VPS solutions might be right for you. They operate on robust software, and they tend to be very affordable. If you manage a number of low volume domains, this solution is certainly cheaper than a dedicated server and much more robust than shared hosting. In fact, since you usually have unlimited domains with your VPS, you might be able to significantly reduce your hosting costs by switching to Linux VPS.

What to look for when choosing the Best Linux VPS Web Host:

1) Stable company
2) Expertise in the Linux distro you plan on using.
3) Affordable cost
4) Tech support (for when real trouble happens)

If you can find a company that handles all of these functions well, you probably just found your next VPS Linux host.
