Nancy Meyers : The Best Yet

I can remember a time when clients would mention the movie Somethings Got To Give at initial design consults, claiming if they could create a feeling in their own home that was it. Being fairly new to design at that time and having a relatively small portfolio Nancy Meyer's set design provided great inspiration for many homes I worked on.

There's a simple and refined, yet casual elegance to her aesthetic. She's always done the best job of creating spaces that were ever inviting, embodying the perfect marriage of traditional with a modern touch. I was so happy to discover that Architectural Digest has featured her renovated home. It's interesting to see how her taste has evolved and yet stayed exactly the same and I enjoyed reading about her decision to stay.

Holiday Prep : 5 Tips to Get Organized

Is it just me or do the holidays sneak up quicker and quicker every year? The season can be stressful for many of us with lots of tasks added to our usual daily lists, so this year I took a minute to think of some different ways to make it fun and a little easier to prep for.

I made a trip to one of my favourite destinations, Southcentre Mall, and got prepared with some extras so organizing would be that much easier and more enjoyable. I started with decor set up and to make an afternoon of it I bought new pyjamas and slippers for LL and myself. Together we picked out some new ornaments and decor things to replace what had broken from last year. (Let's be honest I picked them out and hoped he agreed- haha)
We visited our friends at Kernels and brought home popcorn for stringing (thank goodness popcorn is white and works with my decor theme). I've been wanting to do this forever and it actually ended up being a lot of fun to work on while watching a Christmas movie.

I also maximized my mall visit by making a list of gifts plus items I needed for my house guests and I was able to pick everything up in one stop.

New linens and toiletries were quick to pick out and are on hand for when guests arrive. Towels are from Crate and Barrel, toiletries are Bath and Body Works, new guest bedding from Hudson's Bay.

Holiday Prep Tips:

Put lights on timers or purchase flicker candles that have a timer built into the base. Coming home to the ambiance of lights already on feels so inviting.
Pick up some new toiletries for house guests. There's nothing worse than discovering you're out of a necessity.
Many of us come from an era of grandparents or parents who made it all but I still say it's best to make the things we're good at and buy pre-made for the rest. For instance I can bake a cake but I don't make the best pie pastry. It's ok to substitute store bought items.
Indulge in a new candle or two. I love how this will mask cooking odours and make your home feel inviting. Don't forget to put one in the guest powder room too.
Pick up a few extra boxes of chocolate or things you yourself would enjoy that can double as last minute gifts for your mail delivery person or an unexpected guest or to be a hostess gift for a last minute dinner party invite.

Outdoor Room Interior Reveal

You might have noticed there has been a lot of updating going on around here. It seems when you're a homeowner everything starts to need attention at once. My most recent transformation and fix was on my little backyard cottage. The exterior had begun to show significant signs of wear and tear. I partnered with Canadian Tire and their Premier paint line to redo the outside to prohibit any further deterioration while the weather is nice. The best outcome was loving the new update. (see last post) At the same time I decided it would be wise to tackle the inside as well. The cork flooring which had been repurposed or upcycled from another project had suffered serious fading. I've had painted floors before and loved them so I decided to take the plunge and update the space with a fresh new colour underfoot.
I couldn't be happier with how they turned out.

Here is a glimpse at the before. I never did love that floor but it hadn't occurred to me to paint it. To see what the space used to look like when I first completed it in 2010 visit (here).

I used Premier paint in exterior grade with a flat finish. This way it will hold up better to drastic temperature fluctuations given this space isn't insulted or heated. I also kept in mind that it's scrubbable as well which is obviously an important consideration for a floor. The paint itself went on really well and covered evenly. And possibly the best part- no VOCs mean no smelly fumes in this tiny space that can get very hot on summer days.

I haven't had the chance to visit much since it's been completed but I'm looking forward to some downtime in here with a book. We've even moved a little tv out here on a rainy night for a family movie... almost makes me hope for rain.

Outdoor Room Update Reveal

My little outdoor room has been one of the most visited and read posts on my blog. (here) It's been an amazing little retreat to go to when I wish. I've had wine with girlfriends in there, sleepovers, etc.
It truly does feel like a little cottage in my own yard.
The exterior was starting to show serious signs of wear and tear with the original paint pealing and chipping. I recently gave the space a makeover with a fresh new coat of paint. I partnered with Canadian Tire and used their Premier brand paint line. I chose a colour called Yellowknife Ice PR16Y18 from an amazing array of off white tones. I was impressed at the coverage and encouraged by the fact that its resistant to cracking and peeling, is impervious to mold, mildew and algae.
Repainting the space wasn't just for an aesthetic outcome. Caring for our home exteriors is important to maintain them and prolong structural integrity. But to be honest the aesthetic outcome is my favourite part.

I'm so happy with the outcome. Redoing the outside also prompted a really fun transformation on the inside. That reveal will be coming soon! What do you think? xo e

Around Here : Master Plus Bathroom Reno Update

So I'm that girl... the one who almost always takes on more than I should, especially when it comes to projects around the house. I like to give myself the excuse that it seems everything is dated all at once. Home fix ups have that domino effect that leads you by the hand from one room to the next though right?

I started working on my home office last year (reveal here) and my plan was to move on to my bedroom. At some point in between the bathroom had mildew specks on the ceiling and painting the space somehow turned into a new vanity purchase. Long story short the master and bathroom have been taking up my time neck in neck but I'm nearing the end. (thank goodness)
Here's a little update on where I'm at. I'm luring you in with a pretty a inspiration picture first so that my iPhone photos can hide out at the bottom... but the truth is even this rough phase is exciting. I can't wait to finish these two spaces. I still have several things to coordinate with the bedroom and the bath.
As soon as they're done I'm planning a quick update project at the side entrance of my home plus a big project outside and then I'm moving on to a kitchen update. I'm hoping to get a couple of years out of the existing kitchen but it's starting to feel worn down, so I'll start on some simple cost effective ways to spruce it up. That's what I've been up to. Can't wait to share the reveals.

My Recent Stay At the Hyatt Regency Calgary : How They Help Locally

I recently enjoyed a great staycation at the Hyatt Regency Calgary. I had been asked to attend a brunch a few weeks prior and learned there the Hyatt would be doing a mass renovation with plans to do something amazing for a local charity organization called CUPS Calgary that helps families in need.

It’s never lost on me what a privledge it is or how lucky I am to work in this ever changing industry that I’m in. What touches me the most though are the experiences that incorporate the well being of others, donations to local charities, or just helping the community. Long story short the Hyatt purchased all new furniture for their suites. Having worked in the design industry I know that most hotel chains send their lightly used furnishings off to auction. It’s an excellent way to offset the cost of renovating and they often fetch a fair share because hotel furniture is so darn solid.

What I love about this story is that the Hyatt Regency chose to do something else. They’ve been long time supporters of CUPS and decided to donate ALL of the suite furniture to families in need. Not only did they donate furniture but they also welcomed the families (most with small children) to come and enjoy a fun packed sleepover at the Hyatt.

While I haven’t had to use CUPS myself I have been in a position before as a student where I struggled to make ends meet and cover the basics for my boys. It isn’t always easy and it’s great to know that these families will all have one less worry.

(I love the filtered water taps in every suite- delicious cold water, at no extra charge and no wasteful plastic bottles!)

Anyways to kick off the completed reno I was invited to stay. To say I enjoyed myself at the Hyatt would be an understatement. The rooms were beautifully done and what I always look for in a hotel is whether the beds are comfy and I can tell you, yes, yes they are. To take in the full hotel experience, we ordered room service because it's one of my favourite things to do. I'd never eat eggs and toast in bed at home but it sure was nice.

Another thing that should be noted and praised is the staff. They were all so warm and accommodating, but there was also an air of something else I detected that made my heart happy... pride. Yes they all had a sense of pride at being part of this united team to help us enjoy our experience and would go out of their way to take care of us. I was also delighted to pop by the beautiful Stillwater Spa with the others that attended. Suffice is to say there was no detail overlooked there and after receiving a hand massage it was easy to see how any treatment big or small unwinds stress.

Home Office Reveal : How To Make Your Workspace Happy

It's been a while in the making, but I'm so happy to reveal my home office update. I'd shared in a getting personal post before (here) that it was filled with boxes and had become a storage space after the flood I had a while back. I also shared a preview of the looks I was considering (here)

Here's what I did:

The walls, ceiling and built in shelves all received a new coat of paint. The old track lighting is out and replaced with a fixture that makes my heart flutter. There's a new office chair, area rugs, soft furnishings, plants and a few accessories. (I'll take any reason I can get to order a new candle!)

I partnered with The Mine and set out to find pieces that would work in this room but also created a sense of continuity with the rest of my home. I love how easy the site is to navigate. I was able to pop in different parameters to narrow my search fields and find some truly great additions.

I started with a white desk and office chair for my base pieces and figured I'd weave black and neutral accents into the space. I thought hard about how I work and the primary functions that needed to be covered in this room. Aside from working on my computer at my desk I find that I'm often on conference calls, so I picked out a cushy bench and cushions to recline a bit while talking.

I had existing lower cabinets that I decided to keep. I swapped out the hardware as this is absolutely the easiest way to give them a whole new look. A set of layered area rugs soften the space underfoot and give some dimension with texture. The addition of a new round mirror bounces light around the space and creates a simple yet impactful focal point.

I cleared out many of my books and kept only the ones I truly love (most tucked away inside the cabinets) while the rest of the books I kept displayed all coincide with a colour scheme on each shelf. I love the striking visual balance it creates when layered with other decor items. I added several plants as well to evoke that calm, clean air feeling to a workspace.

I took the time to seriously think about what I could instil in this space to inspire me while I work.

I came up with some tips. The most important thing about creating an inspiring work space is to think about your needs and incorporate items that make you happy. For instance I need a desk and a place to sit that isn't just an office chair. I also needed a flat surface other than my desk to put files and products as I work through my day. From there I considered my other personal happy work necessities: a lit candle, music, fresh flowers and plants, etc,. To me this is what really makes the space impactful; the styling of vignettes and table surfaces. A desk might be beautiful but it will always just be a desk... it's the visual impact of the way you adorn these surfaces that makes them have personality. So I went full steam ahead creating as many little vignettes as I could. However the items I used to style weren't just random nick-nacks. I only layered in bits and pieces that mean something or bring happiness.

Each shelf has something of tremendous meaning on it... for instance this framed fortune from a fortune cookie I had whilst expecting my little guy. It's a reminder of family and the joy he brings.

The carved wooden box on the left belonged to my late grandfather. It's a little way to remember him.

A Week In The Mountains : Buffalo Mountain Lodge

I recently spent a few days with my favourite people at Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff. There's so much beauty in our own backyard, so to speak, in Canada and we often forget to explore. So we decided to spend some time immersed in the rugged beauty of the mountains all while comforted by the luxury of a CRM Resort. To say we had a great time is an understatement. The lodge itself is tucked away from the lively streets of Banff and nestled in the heart of Tunnel Mountain, enabling it to provide that feeling of solitude and peace we all desperately need from time to time.

Upon arriving at the main entrance of the lodge, you're greeted by a large open foyer and fireplace immediately inspiring cozy and welcoming vibes. The wooden architecture and decor accents are the epitome of refined log cabin luxury.
The main lodge restaurant, the Sleeping Buffalo Dining Room was incredible. The staff were all so friendly and extremely accommodating. The menu was great and when I inquired if a minor adjustment could be made to make something vegetarian the chef was more than accommodating. However, they also offer finer cuts of meat (Caribou and Elk) which Luke loved. The kids meals were very tempting too as Luke and I both found ourselves nibbling away at LL's cheese pizza. (he was full, promise!).
Breakfast the next morning was just as divine and we were happy to see some of the staff we'd seen the day before as they greeted us with big smiles.
A night cap by the main fire in the adjoining lounge is something I couldn't pass up either. These are the comfiest chairs, and we had the most delicious wine and cheese here.... I never wanted to leave.

Something we noticed that was small but very convenient was that the parking is located right outside your suite, so you don't have to travel far and do a ton of trips to get all of your luggage unloaded. Because let's be honest, getting away is all about winding down and taking a load off and not schlepping bags.

The large outdoor hot tub was a fun and much needed escape during the cold. It's hours were optimal for little ones during the day and we were reminded that adults could get more of a restful soak at night. (Open till 11:00 pm.)

It was truly amazing to wake up to this view of the wilderness from our room. I indulged in a quiet coffee and took in the fresh mountain air on the spacious patio right off our room in the early morning hours. So peaceful.

The views near by were spectacular. I find you always forget how beautiful and peaceful the mountains are until you're actually amongst them. Complete soul rejuvenation. And lung rejuvenation for that matter. LL sure loved venturing around and we made a day of exploring and site seeing.

Who doesn't want a real fireplace in their room when visiting a lodge? No one, that's who. This was the best thing to look forward to after a day in the mountains and roaming around the busy shops in Banff. The fire comes fully prepared and ready to light- all you need to do is open the vent and strike a match. Easy peasy. Staff comes around daily with wood or you can always call down and get it delivered, making it possible to never have to leave your room if desired.

This has a name for it. Oh, right, it's called heaven. Wine by a warm fire is the elixir of life.
Just to the right of the fire is an armoire with a tv which felt a little like the best of both worlds. If visiting with children, the front desk has a fun selection of DVD's to entertain littles for that pocket of time after dinner and before bed. There's even a good selection for adults if the fancy strikes.

The Buffalo Mountain Café, a secondary restaurant at the lodge, is wonderful for prepared sandwiches and coffee so you can get on with all the amazing activities Banff has to offer. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunches and assortment of baked goods for dessert.
The Café also has tons of CRMR kitchen goods, which I for one love. It's such a great way to bring home a little memento from your time spent AND I like that everything is made locally and supports small business.

My Home Office Update Preview With The Mine

If you follow me on Instagram you'll know that I've been really excited to pull together my home office makeover. I've been working on it bit by bit since last summer and I'm so happy that it's finally coming together. Today I'm sharing the two different looks I created to choose between. Can you guess which one I went with?

I ended up choosing Look A for several reasons. There was an indulgent part of me that absolutely wanted to go with the blush and gold tones of Look B but I also wanted to the space to blend seamlessly with the rest of the main floor (which is predominantly black and white with lots of texture layered in). Also my boyfriend Luke often works in this space with me and I wanted there to be enough of a masculine vibe to make him feel supported as well so that we both work happy. The last puzzle piece to this room arrived today and I'll be styling the space and shooting soon. Looking forward to sharing the reveal! Happy Monday sweet friends! xo e

How To Attain Financial Freedom With ATB

Financial freedom, what exactly is it and how do you get there? It isn't something that's just reserved for people with millions of dollars. This is one common misconception I've heard amongst friends before. I'm certainly not a financial expert, but as a single mom I've had to learn a thing or two about planning, budgeting and finding my way to financial freedom. I often talk about interiors, fashion, beauty and health... but financial health is a satisfying goal to aspire to as well.

At some point - or another in life - most of us will experience needing or wanting something that we can't necessarily afford at that time. Perhaps it's a trip or a handbag, or even a living expense or a sudden car repair. Saving isn't always easy, and while they teach us complex trigonometry in school, they skip the financial advice that would provide us with valuable life skills.

I felt like a fish out of water understanding some things at first, so over the years I've read books in an effort to inform myself and to hopefully make wise and savvy financial moves. It also helps that I grew up with a mom who was hard working and a well-respected real estate agent.

When you hear about rates, mortgages and general planning at the dinner table as a child you're bound to absorb some knowledge. But despite gleaning bits of information from my mom and books, it helped considerably to rely on the wisdom of financial experts to bridge the remainder of what I didn't know and help me arrive at my goals.

Financial freedom means you have a plan. For some, it also means being debt free. When you stick to a plan you begin to have choices and at the same time feel a sense of having options and security. This is what I learned from the experts at ATB. Since implementing their help I've felt driven and compelled to stick with my plan. In the event of an unexpected expense I've had a financial advisor who remembers my name and my family situation to bounce my thoughts off of, and I have received excellent advice.

My next goal is to take my little guy to Disney and tour around California, but I also have some things that need to be addressed around the house. In the meantime, I'll stick to the plans I have in place until I can make those things happen.

Tips For A Perfect Valentine's Night In

Valentine's Day is one of the occasions that I really enjoy. Simply put, I love a day that celebrates love. This year I decided to take a slightly different approach to the occasion. I've been trying to incorporate ways to slow down in day to day life, practising Hygge and trying to be more in the now. With that in mind I decided that Valentine's Day shouldn't just be for couples to enjoy, but for everyone to enjoy.

This specific day has traditionally revolved around the conventional sense of love, being the love between individuals, which I think in a way has become quite an exclusionary celebration. Thus bringing me to the soulful notion of self-love and how this too should be celebrated. And even though this takes practise and should be at the forefront of our lives, let's be honest sometimes that can be quite difficult. So my suggestion is to take the day to remind yourself that you're beautiful and dive into all the great qualities you possess. All while enjoying a glass of wine and some chocolates of course ;)

For today's post I'm trying to come up with ways to celebrate Valentine's Day, that are fun, not necessarily conventional. won't break the bank and maybe.. just maybe.. encourage a little self love.
Here are some suggestions based on things I plan on doing. The great thing about blogging this stuff is that I often get to do the run through for photos and have a second experience on the actual day.
Set up... I sourced a bunch of things in my own home. The rest of the items I was able to get in one morning from Southcentre Mall, Crave Cupcakes, Amborella Floral Studio and Village Ice Cream.

The Single Girl Soirée:
It's a weeknight and everyone has plans, but that's no reason to not celebrate. Take the night and celebrate you and just how amazing you are. Appreciate just how far you've come and focus on thoughts of encouragement about where you're going. A night in could include your favourite dinner, movie or a good book. Don't forget to romance yourself with some fresh flowers or a treat (the Village Frozen Strawberry Coconut Milk below was unreal). The scent of roses has been proven to be uplifting. Giving yourself an at home spa treatment with a rose scented mask is like a win win, good for your complexion and your soul. After that treat yourself to a Saje bath swish. There's a sweet little love note in the centre that will emerge when it's fully dissolved.

Galentines Get Together:
Have your favourite girls over for a night of all things delicious and pink. Planning an indoor picnic for my get together was pretty easy. It can be as in depth or as simple as you like. All winter we opt for soft clothes that are cozy, but for Valentine's Day why not opt for something pretty, silky and pink. I indulged a bit and treated myself to some new lotion and body mist. It's light and soft and so pretty. I couldn't resist. They're the cutest little cakes that say "I love you" from Crave, and I've discovered a little Moët is the perfect compliment. Family Love Picnic:

I planned a living room picnic for Lolly (my little guy) too. We snacked on Kernels Popcorn, Crave Cupcakes, Purdy's Chocolates and I got Lolly some of his favourite San Pellegrino Sparkling Fruit drink. There's no reason the day can't be a celebration of family love too.

Weekend Edition : Raspberry Lemon Loaf

I'm always looking for something new to make for my family on weekends. It's also important to me to make something that can be taken to school for snacks for LL. A raspberry lemon loaf was the perfect thing. I recently came across this recipe I had in my little baking folder and thought I'd update it to suit the way I like to eat today. It just so happens that these pretty deep pinky red raspberries dotting this loaf might be a nice thing to keep in mind for Valentine's Day too.

This recipe used to call for butter... and a LOT of it. I substituted olive oil and greek yogurt. I'm by no means a nutrition expert, but I was happy to swap the butter out.

I also cut the eggs back from 5 to 3.

A little tip: when baking any sort of loaf I almost always reserve fruit to decorate the top. It just adds a thoughtful and decorative touch.

The end result was so moist and delicious. In fact it wasn't easy to photograph because some of the pieces fell apart on the plate. Needless to say I might have to make a couple more closer to the 14th.

Family Room Update Reveal with Lowe's Canada

It's funny how often interior designers procrastinate with projects in their own homes. I've been meaning to get to a family room update for some time now.

Once the colder winter months set in and we're inside more, it's harder to look around at the unfinished spaces in our homes. It's also statistically the time that people tackle decor projects in order to enjoy being indoors.

This in mind, I decided there's no time like the present to dedicate some TLC to my family room, especially considering it gets so much use and traffic. It's where we spend the bulk of our family time.

I started with a new light fixture as the jumping point. I've been loving the feel of copper and bronze touches in my home lately, and I found a great LED Chandelier ceiling fan at Lowe's Canada with that inspiration in mind. From there I went with accents that all had a similar feel, to weave in and out of the space and create a sense of continuity. I have several commitments coming up that will eat up much of my free time. So, given I didn't have a huge amount of time to pull this together, I loved that they had everything in store I could possibly need. One stop shopping. Who knew!? It was important to me to keep the room relaxed, functional, and welcoming for family while still respecting the need for it to be pretty. I wanted it to feel warm and inviting for the winter months, but also have elements that would work well with the rest of the spaces in my home now and throughout the year.

I went with this amazing copper fixture that has a glamorous and worldly, yet bohemian feel. The best part is that hidden in the centre is actually a ceiling fan! Perfect for this room that can get quite hot in the summer, and being so close to the kitchen can also smell smoky when the toaster decides to burn things.

The back corner in this room is always a natural focal point. A couple of vases and some simple art accents punctuate the space and tie in those metallic touches.

I chose this amazing ottoman because I love the modern clean lines of the metal frame and how they complement the more traditional tufting and linen. The metal frame also creates a slightly more casual feel than turned legs might in this setting. I added a throw to the end of the ottoman where my little guy often puts his feet and I added a tray at the other end. The tray provides a solid surface for coasters and drinks protecting the ottoman fabric from spills and being easy to wipe down.

This corner got a quick update with lovely bronze planters and a couple new plants I picked up at my local Lowe's the day of the install. Greenery is always a good idea in the long winter months... plants bring in a sense of life, naturally purify the air and add a pop of colour. These new planters are the perfect touch here too, they add more hints of those warm metallics tying the room together in a way that's pleasing to the eye. I also added another one of these grey and gold vases that look just as pretty without fresh flowers as they do with. They tie in the grey tones of the cushions I already had which create a sense of balance.

Soft sided baskets provide the perfect stash spot for extra throw blankets and a magazine or two.

This corner is where people lean to put on shoes. I needed something small to balance the rest of the space. This umbra frame floats off of the wall and a picture of travels in muted tones compliments the other art.

You can see how the space feels tied together and the pieces that I introduced easily work with items I already had. The best part, it only took a day to put this new look together, and that's including the light installation. It's just an indication that updates with a big outcome needn't be overwhelming, especially when you shop in the same spot.

I can't wait to enjoy some popcorn and a movie here with my family.

Around Here: Whole Home Update

I'm just back from a getaway in the mountains. I was feeling a little blah and the fresh air and zero service were just what I needed. It's great to be forced to unplug- especially for an extended period of time.
Once I was home I threw myself into the thick of things with home projects. We were able to get the family room done over the weekend. So keep your eyes out for that reveal. And then we're throwing ourselves full steam ahead on the master bedroom (see last post) AND office.
In the past my own design schemes have often been rushed or maybe lacked vision because I poured all of my creativity into my design client's projects. This time I'm trying to take my time and be a little more thoughtful so I end up with a result I love.
I was still contemplating changing out all of the flooring or painting it all white, but I realized an oversized area rug will be good enough for the time being and will mean that I can focus that part of the budget on other projects- which we've planned PLENTY of, basically a whole home overhaul. In the past it's meant new cushion covers and paint, but this time I'm talking walls being moved and a new bathroom, etc. More on that later though. In the meantime I'm trying to decide on a master bedroom area rug. Here's what I'm thinking.

We're also trying to decide if we want to add trim work to the wall to give it some visual interest. I had some trim installed in the living room last year (I've included a picture of it going in below) and I was thinking I might like the same sort of thing for the bedroom as well.

I'm also over my bedside table lamps. I still love the bedside tables though... thank goodness. So I'm on the hunt for lamps or sconces. These two both caught my eye. The sconces would be a more costly investment but I love that they'd clean off the bedside surface and therefore look much less cluttered.

Mount Engadine : A Beautiful Lodge in the Mountains

I feel so lucky that when I want to get out of the city and visit the mountains, they're such a short drive away. The destinations within two hours of my front door are world renowned for being the most beautiful and breath-taking. We recently spent a few days at Mount Engadine Lodge in Kananaskis country and really enjoyed our stay.

The drive there was beautiful and took us about an hour and a half. In true Canadian fashion we happened to see mountain goats on the way. The lodge was easy to find (some aren't) and we were delighted at first glance with how rustic and cozy it all appeared blanketed in a thick layer of snow.

Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by Simon and offered a coffee or tea while we sat by a huge hearth to hear about the perks of our stay.

We checked into our room and immediately set out to explore. The grounds were amazing and we hiked through the forest until lunch time.

The lodge is known for it's Sunday brunch and tea time and excellent charcuterie. Their on sight chef, Mandy, creates the most amazing array of foods and was accommodating to my vegetarian ways. The restaurant happened to be fully booked but the team offered to bring a delicious array of goods to our room.

We were tired from our early morning departure and hike and decided to cozy up by the fire after lunch, and do some reading with hot chocolates in hand. This is when the true meaning of getaway comes into play. On any other Sunday afternoon I'm rushing to do laundry and food prep for the coming week. I really appreciated the break and downtime.

Dinner was outstanding. It's served with a communal approach in mind, which was a little socially daunting at first. However, it ended up being one of my favourite parts of the trip. We met the most lovely people who had arrived at the lodge from all corners of the world and heard little bits and pieces about their lives. It added that extra sense of traveling abroad and meeting new people.

The next morning we rose bright and early to have breakfast and start our day.

Our meals were great, eggs benny for me, specially prepared without bacon and a stack of almond banana pancakes for Luke.
From there we both tried snow shoeing for the first time and got quite a bit of exercise from it (which was welcomed after the amount of food we ate at breakfast..). We thought we saw a moose but couldn't be sure. Okay if we're going to be honest with ourselves it was probably just a big rock.. but moose sightings are very common there! There's a large winding creek in a gully behind the Lodge that offers beautiful scenery and chances to see wildlife in Winter and in Summer months. What an adventure.

The best part about returning... more charcuterie and wine waiting in our room.
I love an outdoor fire. Mount Engadine happens to have one of those too.

We brought our own s'mores kit and enjoyed the surrounding forest by open fire. Enclosed in our own little igloo, built by another one of the great guys on site, Graham. Perfect for adults to sit around and be warm while any children or adults ;) can go and toboggan at the hill very close to it and the lodge.

One last thing I also appreciated about the lodge is that they source local items to be used in the lodge. For instance all soaps and toiletries are from our friends at Rocky Mountain Soap Co. Their in house tea is from the Banff Tea Co, and coffee is Mountain Blends Coffee Roasters. Even the array of beers and wine are from local distilleries and wineries. The list goes on with local farms and other things sourced from the area. That just feels good.

We noted that a couple groups of friends had rented out the cabins to themselves. We chatted with them as well before they left for a day of skiing. I genuinely feel that Mount Engadine Lodge would be equally fun for the whole family or for a romantic getaway for two. In fact, I'm already thinking about Valentine's Day.

Thoughts and Projects 2018 : Plus Your Opinion

I've never really been one for New Years resolutions. I think I tried them a few times, they didn't stick and I resolved not to resolve again. Haha. I also tried keeping an intent word in mind for the year. That was uplifting at times when I had several not so great years.
Fast forward to now, 2017 was one of the very best years I've had in a LONG time. That feels great to say.
In planning for 2018 I've contemplated what projects I might enjoy working on, not only professionally but personally as well.
I'm in the midst of having my blog redesigned by Kiki & Co (so excited about that) AND there are already so many exciting campaigns in the works for the next year. I'm feeling very grateful.

I felt it was important to ask, what do you hope to see on here? What kinds of projects and posts resonate with you? I was actually quite surprised at times by the posts that did better than others last year. There's a greater interest in self care and I can attest to that fact that it's certainly bettered my life. My metrics also indicate that you're curious about my family life too. I did enjoy when the blog had more of a personal narrative feel. I stripped that back at one point when I had some legal stuff going on, and never was able to get the rhythm of sharing back.

My first project of the year is a quick update in my family room. It's in need of some love, so I'll be sharing easy ways to accomplish that in the next week or so. Next after that is a huge overhaul for my own bedroom. In an effort to focus on self care, I do believe it's critical to have a space to retreat to in the evenings that you love. ( but I'll explain why in that post- coming soon).
I'm also looking at some little shifts and changes with myself. Hair, makeup, wardrobe. I'd like to simplify.

In the meantime here are some of the pretty things I've already bought for my room redo (below). AND side note... I've been struggling with the decision of whether I should paint the oak floors white. I painted my kitchen floor a creamy white in my very first house... back in 2003 and thought it was amazing, but I worry about the domino effect it'll create when I need to paint ALL of the floors. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I've wanted a wedding blanket forever. When I saw this one I finally decided it was time. She's a beauty no?

And after months of looking and deliberation I ordered this bed. The fabric sample isn't an oatmeal shade as shown but instead the most perfect not cream/not white knubby linen fabric, and the price point was very reasonable too so I went ahead.

Entertaining Guide : Hosting A Memorable NYE Party

I love New Years Eve for so many reasons; maybe because there's something magical about a fresh start. The celebration is much more than just a party, it's a renewed chance to accomplish dreams and goals and reevaluate for a new year. I enjoy hosting at my home every year. It's become a tradition. Somehow I have license to justify all of the glitter, sparkle, metallics and pretty decor my heart desires. I start thinking about a theme or look early in November but it helps that there's always a pocket of time after boxing day to get more organized. Anything I order before Christmas always arrives in time.
This year I decided for the first time to host in the little cottage I have out back in the yard. It's cozy and intimate with a fireplace and informal seating yet still fits my guest list.
We've decorated for a post to share with you how to recreate the same look. however we'll be hosting the real party on new years eve. If our mini early party we threw for the shoot was any indication of how the real one will be we're in for nothing short of amazing.

Party Theme: Setting the Stage

I went with steely grey blues, silvers and copper. In a nod to a time of classic cocktails, cut crystal and polished nickel I wanted everything to be reminiscent of the deco era. The evening's signature cocktails: moscow mule and old fashioned with champagne at midnight for toasting. I kept the food simple with lots of finger friendly hors d'oeuvres and a tiered cake for midnight.

Decor Items and Tips for Hosting

1. A copper shaker for moscow mule prep and cut crystal (image above) shaker for old fashioneds- two shakers made it easy to differentiate between drinks and cut back on cleanup in-between cocktail prep.

2. A copper ice bucket held individual champagne bottles chilling in ice.

3. I went with heavy cut library glassware for serving old fashioned and traditional copper mugs for the moscow mules.

4. Updated cushion covers and a fluffy white faux fur throw, fresh greenery and new lamps (like these Jamie Young Ceramic Column Table Lamps) plus plenty of Mercury Glass Votive Candles and Flickering Flameless Candles cast a warm glow and create ambiance.

5. German glitter letter ornaments were ordered to spell out NYE , 2018 balloons, and a selection of pretty votives to weave into a garland from Amborella for the fire place.
Fresh florals, flicker candles and string lights created the necessary yet simple and easy last minute touches.

6. Charcuterie was prepped ahead of time and brought out on boards to save multiple trips back and forth.

7. The simplest decor addition is a one-of-a-kind PB Found Dough Bowl (that can be used throughout the year) with some Mercury Glass Ornaments casually placed inside.

A Homemade Christmas : Holiday Home Tour

It's true the holidays are a magical time. Spending time with loved ones, entertaining, decorating and gift giving. It's also true that they can be a stressful time too. I love going all out to decorate every year, but don't love the overwhelmed feeling I've often ended up with when I drive all over trying to find key elements. This sometimes delays other tasks too, like gift purchases.
This year I decided I would be far more thoughtful in my holiday prep. I had recently partnered with Southcentre Mall to share some fun ideas for Halloween and came to love this mall as a destination to shop at.
So rather than making multiple trips to various spots all over the city, I made one list and tackled the majority of it at Southcentre all in one stop.
I came up with a theme this year, that I'm calling a homemade Christmas largely from things that are made with love... if not by me than by someone else. I wanted a more simple, maybe slightly less formal feel, that welcomed family near and far to truly relax and make themselves at home.
I left out the white tree in favour of this amazing natural looking green fir I happened to find. From there I layered in these great cable knit pieces and raw wood trivets (from Crate and Barrel). The gold candles I used throughout the space added a sense of sparkle and glam elevating the rustic feel of the knits and wood (Restoration Hardware). I love the combo of the three.
Making the holidays less stressful is also easy when you're able to pick up many of your gifts in one spot as well. I was fortunate to have Luke along with me and we tackled everything in one afternoon.
It made the whole decorating process a little more light hearted to know in the back of my mind that most of my shopping list was tackled too.
For my other needs I emailed ahead of time and placed orders at both Crave Cupcakes for the season's baking goods and Amborella Floral for my garlands and holiday arrangements. These items also have a homemade feel but the expertise and hard work was done by someone else. Both destinations are within a relatively small loop of the mall too, so my driving was limited. (of note however, they both deliver!)
I started with set up and was able to finish everything in one day.

The cable knit table runner adds a nice touch and my friend Lexie from Amborella Floral Studio did the lettering on these slate place card markers. (they make me SOOO happy) I love the acacia wood slice trivets underneath each plate as well. The great thing is that they can be used throughout the year and not necessarily feel holiday-ish.

I think I developed this habit one year when I overlooked people whom I should've remembered, and felt so bad last minute when I had nothing for them. Fresh came out with their Zodiac Soap Collection again. I think these are such a thoughtful gift... likely because it also means you have to know when the recipients birthday is. Each bar comes wrapped in thick bright paper with a wire and gemstone in the centre. No need to wrap even. Every sign smells divine, so no one single sign is getting a more desirable scent.

Lot's of us commute or maybe spend more time in our cars than we'd like to. I love how this sweet little Saje diffuser is specially made for those longer rides and provides a little relaxation when traffic might not be. This gift is sure to make anyone smile.

Last but not least, I love keeping a few boxes of chocolates set aside. This particular box from Purdy's is delicious (I won't say how, but I know first hand). Worst case scenario, you don't gift them and you eat them yourself over the holidays. Otherwise these assorted boxes are just so nice to have on hand for a last minute gift.

Holiday Home Tour : A White Christmas

Hi and welcome! I'm delighted to be on this fun Christmas home tour with such a great group of bloggers. If you're following along on the loop you've likely just come over from Ashley's blog, Curls and Cashmere. Wasn't her tour lovely? So much inspiration. The next one after me, with Modern Glam is amazing too, but more on that below.
I'm so glad you're here today and I get to share our holiday home and traditions with you. Family is so very important to me, but I'm also a designer... so decor with sentiments in mind are at the top of my list.
When I first picked out holiday decor, my goal was to get something I'd love year after year knowing I'd make slight tweaks. I felt it was important to invest once in good quality elements that last and become treasures you pull out of storage every year.
For this reason I love my velvet quilt collection. The stockings and tree skirt are so well made.

I also have a base collection of white satin glass ornaments. I reuse these every year too and then sprinkle in whatever other palette I've decided to mix in. This year it was a mix of soft muted metals, and some glittery elements, as well as some florals and greenery. I like how fresh and bright it all feels.

I'm fortunate enough to have the best local bakery here, Crave Cupcakes, founded by sisters and all about family. Grazing on their cupcakes and other holiday treats has become an annual tradition for us when setting up our Christmas tree, and we wouldn't dream of getting started without them. We make trimming the tree into quite the party around here... because any excuse to eat cupcakes, right?!

Quite possibly my favourite addition are the St. Jude lidded glass candles - these ones are from last year but they have a new collection this year too. They smell so lovely, look beautiful with my other accessories, and a portion of the proceeds go back to your local Children's Hospital. That just feels good whether you keep them or give them as a thoughtful gift. This year's Children's Hospital collection here.

Mixing ornaments with some fresh flowers adds a festive touch amidst the accessories that normally reside on the coffee table.

I can never get enough pillar candles. Setting up multiple vignettes of flameless flicker candles; all of which are on a timer, means that the living room has an ambiance and glow that I can depend on at the same time every day. They're amazing to come home to on a cold winter night and the boys enjoyed decorating the candle holders with fake snow and german glitter snowflakes.

I thought it might be a slightly different approach to stack logs end to end in the hearth and stagger a collection of simple glass votives over the wood ends that jutted out. I like that the flame is enclosed in the glass cup and therefore I needn't worry about them setting fire to the wood.

I couldn't overlook the kitchen and dressed it with a simple wreath of real evergreens, and a simple arrangement that will last weeks if you clean the water every few days.

The family room also got a simple update of two boxwood wreaths on the windows, some florals and paper white bulbs. This room gets a lot of traffic so thus far I've left it at that.

I love adding a touch of greenery to the bedroom as well. It's festive and smells amazing. My friends at Amborella made me this Eucalyptus and Evergreen garland. I added some of the left over pieces to a bud vase for Luke's bedside table. It just so happened that he had brought home some Juliet roses a few days before and I added them to some greenery for a vase on my side.

Last but not least (bottom image) I couldn't leave out the front porch. I put together this very simple yet lovely planter. I bought long birch branches and we cut them in half to double their numbers. I love how the irregular heights turned out. Paired with some evergreens and a lantern with a flicker candle on a timer, it creates a welcoming glow in the evenings.

Life At Home : The Art of Lounging

I read an interesting passage lately about the way we lounge, or unwind in the privacy of our homes. It was in the book called, "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up" (here). I had come across it while researching for my Hygge post (here). Much like dressing for our busy days is an expression of ourselves, the way we dress for relaxation is revealing too.
Do you wear old clothes that likely should have been thrown out? Are they even comfortable? I have gone through stages in the past where I indulge in cute comfy things, but I've also worn items that were as uncomfortable as they were ugly. Maybe you've done the same? Wearing the shirt that you got for free at something, that's 3 sizes too big and has a scratchy tag in the collar.

This is the paragraph that resonated with me:
"To me it doesn't seem right to keep clothes we don't enjoy for relaxing around the house. This time at home is still a precious part of living. Its value should not change just because nobody sees us. So, starting today, break the habit of downgrading clothes that don't thrill you to loungewear. The real waste is not discarding clothes you don't like but wearing them even though you are striving to create the ideal space for your ideal lifestyle. Precisely because no one is there to see you, it makes far more sense to reinforce a positive self-image by wearing clothes you love.

After reading this I set out to simplify the items I lounge in as well. As an extension to my hygge post, and pursuing that comfort in real life, I felt that it was important. There is truth to that passage that our time IS precious no matter where we are. At the same time finding comfy loungewear shouldn't break the bank, but at some point it does feel good to invest a little to ensure comfort and ease when grabbing those items quickly to change into. In that sense, it's making it easy for ourselves to make those transitions... and that just feels good.
Here are some of the things I've rounded up and own myself. To me items needed to be incredibly comfortable, soft, warm, practical, pretty and yet cost effective. Not a tiny list. But I found things that do fulfill those requirements.

I've paired these pieces with this barefoot dreams topper (here) and I can''t believe how long it took me to buy it for myself. It's the softest thing on the planet too.

These slippers (here) completed my at home get up. Next up I'm ordering all the same items in a soft grey with ivory accents. I can't wait.

Palm Springs : The Ace Hotel & Swim Club

From the moment we pulled up in front of The Ace we knew we were in for something very different than anywhere we'd been before.... in a decidedly good way.

Originally a dilapidated Howard Johnson and Denny's, the space was apparently very run down, and neglected before a complete renovation breathed new life into this location. My first impression is that rather than bulldozing and starting fresh, I love that this hotel line reimagined the existing buildings and revamped the existing bones.

The Ace, a chain originating in the Pacific Northwest has a very distinct feel, however a separate cali vibe resonates in their Palm Springs location. The crisp white breeze block walls against the bright green vegetation and stark grey mountains created a colour palate so pleasing to the eye.

I have to emphatically say that what was most impressive about the Ace wasn't the design, or the bed, or the stark boutique feel so many chains resonate- it's that the team who created the Ace truly created an experience rather than a look. The vibe is exactly what you would want when escaping the realities of home life. It's not about putting a stamp on each identical room. Rooms in the Ace all have sourced vintage pieces and a relaxed informal feel. Indulgence and luxury are apparent in the comfortable bed, snacks and beverages that you actually want to eat or drink, and enjoyable soaps and textiles- like the signature striped robes on hooks beside the beds (it's the little things). People throw around the word hipster a lot in reference to the Ace and perhaps there's some truth to that, but I chose to see it rather as relaxed and inviting, if not a totally homey destination where one can be themselves.

To take things one step further, if you're at all nostalgic like I am, you'll appreciate that in the main lobby you can purchase your own striped robe to take home. Or if you don't have room in your luggage many of the items within the rooms are available for order online. Such a nice touch to take a bit of your stay home with you.

While on site we had breakfast at the King's Highway Diner (inhabiting the previous Denny's on location). We were so impressed by every aspect of our time there. From the server who treated us like old friends to the comfy banquette seating, the homey vibe and the delicious food. Breakfast was beyond and if you happen to get the chance yourself, I suggest you order some toast so you can try their homemade jam. It's unreal.

If you ever find yourself in Palm Springs be sure to keep The Ace in mind. I know we'll look forward to the day when we're able to return and enjoy some downtime poolside. xo e

On Trend : How To Hygge

Hygge. How do we Hygge? Why would we Hygge? This buzz term, pronounced "Hue-Guh", is a danish word that means to indulge in little pleasures and all things cozy. An ideology extremely relevant in this age of rushed and overbooked lives. There's no english equivalent, so it's no surprise we're not familiar with the term or way of life. From what I've read, the Danish are some of the happiest people in the world so they must be doing something right. I figured the best way to explain Hygge was to understand it myself. I didn't really know where to begin, so I started with booking an hour one evening to think about it and read up on the practise. I then came up with a list of ways to force myself to slow down and unplug.

I often work on my computer until I turn out the lights for bed, and I wonder why I feel burnt out. I typically have my laptop in front of me with Netflix going in the background. I work away while keeping track of whatever is happening on the series we're watching at the time. It had never occurred to me what an absurd amount of stimulation this is. It took curiosity about this word to be able to see this clearly. I knew immediately I had to make some changes and they fell into place so easily. To summarize Hygge is all about creating a haven or sanctuary in your own home in order to enjoy a slower lifestyle and savour precious moments. It's about being kind to yourself and your loved ones while indulging in fulfilling cozy activities.

I've started putting on soft clothes, sipping tea, snuggling under a giant blanket against plush cushions and reading; it feels so nice and quiet. It's funny how it seems luxurious to slow things down. I've also started listening to my record player. There's something about the fuzzy sound of the needle set to soft vocals that's just so nice. I leave my phone face down on my bedside table in the evenings making a conscious effort to give myself a break from mindless scrolling.

I also discovered that a lot of the time the work I did in the evening was so divided that I didn't accomplish as much as I could. Forcing myself to slow down and indulge has also meant that my work has had to become more focused. I'm using my time more efficiently and generally feeling refreshed.

How to Hygge:

Set aside time to unwind and enjoy life's pleasures (book it in your calendar if you must) and ditch your technology for this hour or two.
Treat yourself to some new slippers, a robe, or other cozy soft wear that encourages relaxation.

Light a candle, maybe even one with a wooden wick that flickers and cracks like a fire would.
Run a bath and indulge in the ritualistic aspects of soaking in the tub. Use a bath bomb or Epsom salts.
Read a good book. Make picking the book out a ceremonious act as well and maybe stick to something happy.
Update your space with soft pillows, cozy throws and warm white indirect lighting.
Allow yourself a special treat, like a tart from the local bakery or your favourite candy.
Bring nature inside: a plant cut branch or floral arrangements, or planted bulbs.
Take time for self care: use a face mask, apply a rich body lotion, or do an at home mani/pedi.
Listen to soothing music. If you have a record player pick out an album that puts you in a good mood. Otherwise make a play list that combines your favourite mellow music.
Diffusers give your space a fresh feel and ionize the air, add essential oils and breathe deeply.
