We helped Margaret from Decatur win her battle against indian meal moths last year, and now she's asked how to avoid future moth infestations. Using a sentinel moth trap is a respected technique in integrate pest management and we'll share how this strategy works.

Q: How can I prevent a future moth infestation?

After what seemed to be 6 months of battle with an indianmeal moth infestation, I am either in a lull or I’ve won the war.

I just don’t want to go through this again. So my question is about some form of prevention?
Just like before, I won’t use poisons or pesticides, I insist on a natural / organic approach. But I am not sure what to try.

I had read about using sentinel traps but I don’t recognize the brand name. How are they different from the pheromone sticky moth traps I’ve been using.

Thanks for your help, I used www.moth-trap.info to figure out how to beat the meal moths in the first place.

Margaret C from Decatur

A: Use a sentinel moth trap strategy

Margaret,
Thanks for letting us know that we helped you win your battle. It’s our goal here to get accurate information for fighting a indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella infestation from larvae through adults.

Regarding prevention, we agree that there is no need to risk poisonous pesticides. At the same time we have to recognize that the moth invasions 95% of the time originate with the food we bring in to our homes. Because of this, prevention really doesn’t work (we all need to eat!).

Instead we need to focus on early detection of an emerging moth invasion. Early detection is accomplished by keeping a single early detection trap close to your food storage area. That single early detection moth trap is called a sentinel moth trap. So it isn’t any particular brand of moth trap ( you can continue using which ever brand moth trap you already stocked up on).

Most important when it comes to early detection through a sentinel moth trap is keeping the pheromone lure fresh… Many times I have gone through secondary infestations and would go check my sentinel trap only to find that the date on the trap was 9 months ago, 3 times too long, and the pheromone had dried out. So set reminders and keep the lures fresh!

So you had the right idea using a sentinel strategy, only it’s not a brand name, it’s the name of an approach to Integrated Pest Management IPM.

After checking out the details on Revenge, Pantry Pest, and some other industrial moth traps, I ran across Catchmaster traps. Not only were they organic and natural, but they were also very effective! It seemed like only minutes after opening the lure that several moths headed my direction. My moth trap picture is proof that these things work.

A: YES, Pheromones are safer than pesticides

We never advocate using an exterminator for pantry moths because of the risk of having pesticides (which means pest killers, or poision) near your food.

Here is the Pantry Moth Trap Lure MSDS

When you review the Indian Meal Moth Lure MSDS, notice in Section II under hazardous ingredients reads: NONE. Pheromones are harmless, and very effective for attracting male moths.

The term ‘pheromones‘ means a scent that triggers a social reaction from members of the same species. So for moths, a female pheromone means the scent of a female indianmeal moth ( or any other name for a pantry moth, Plodia interpunctella ). When a male moth is ready to mate, he starts hunting for females, and the pheromone is the way he finds them.

Moth trap pheromones are not toxic, or poisonous and are perfectly safe for use around food products.

I spent weeks trying to figure out how to get rid of moths. First I just smashed them on the walls, but they kept coming! Then I tried bay leafs (I read about them online), but no luck. Then I found pheremone moth traps and many reviews about how effective pheremones are at getting rid of moths.
I bought bird seed moth traps, and put them in the basement and upstairs pantry.

I am sending pictures from basement where bird seed is stored and pantry upstairs where peanuts & birdseed is stored. See the results for yourself!

Q: Are the moths I see in my kitchen and my daughters dog food the same?

We have a indoor moth problem. They are small and we’ve been noticing them since March. They are little and wispy. I see them in the kitchen. Our daughter and her family kept their dog food open bag in our large back porch. We also have bird seed in a feeder outside, usually kept in the garage in a storage container. Are all of these moths related?

A: Birdseed, Dogfood, Kitchen moths are all the same.

All of these moths are the same, they are basically food moths, or commonly called pantry moths. These moths will eat cat food, dog food, bird seed and practically anything you leave open in your cupboards.
These moths can be controlled with pantry moth traps.

Hello – attached is a photo I took of the used traps. They work great! I had no idea there were this many pantry moths. We thought we got rid the source which we found in our pantry in the basement. However, after we set the pantry moth traps, I noticed the female moths were laying eggs in tiny grooves between the rafters in the basement.
I’m definitely going to need more traps! Thanks,
