Since the wedding cake is so prominent at a wedding reception most couples like it to look amazing and be a talking point. This often means that it costs an arm and a leg! However there are ways to create a spectacular cake without the spectacular price!

If you want some exotic flavour for your cake just do it for one layer rather than all of them. That will cut the cost down a little. Lots of couples keep the top layer for the first anniversary or other major event so make sure its your favorite flavour.

Sometimes after the wedding rehearsal there is a dinner party which is paid for by the grooms family! I didn't have this done at my wedding because there wasn't enough time to get it organised as my husbands family come from various places abroad and sorting them out took a while! Anyway some people use this party as a time to give gifts to the people helping out at the wedding alternatively others like myself used the wedding reception as the time to do this. Well below are some ideas on what you can get - after all not everyone wants flowers or chocolates!

Bridesmaids

Jewellery is always a good choice. Quality earrings or necklaces. When I was bridesmaid my friend gave us all earrings and necklaces that we wore at the wedding - I still wear them now and that's over 15 years ago! Make sure they are classic and won't go out of fashion.

I find the men more difficult to buy gifts for. Rather than alcohol like whisky you could get some nice shot glasses or champagne flutes depending on their personal preference of drink. She includes the groom and other members of the family in a warm welcoming way. This great wedding speech is just the right length too.

Usually it's the father of the bride who gives a wedding day speech but sometimes and it happens more often now, I've noticed mother of bride speeches. A few years ago a friend of mine was preparing for her wedding day and only her mum was going to be at the wedding. She didn't know what to do in terms of wedding speeches. In the end she gave a speech herself and it went down really well.

Recently I came across a great website with loads of examples of wedding speeches (mother of the bride speeches, father of bride speeches, best man speeches, grooms speeches, even maid of honor speech). I've heard some best man jokes and toasts that have been either fantastic or really embarrassing! I remember one wedding I went to and the best man speech was so awful - I felt really sorry for the bride and groom!

My brother is thinking of getting married next year and he wants me to give one of the wedding speeches!
