We recently had an family medical emergency and were scrambling around trying to find all the information about allergies, medications and insurance. As a grandparent of little ones I don’t always know what is what with my grandchildren’s medical information. It is a good idea that every family member has an emergency medical wallet card. They are offered for FREE at the Medical IDs website. You fill out the form online and then print it out on your printer. Parents should have one for each of their children and print extra copies for their grandparents, non-custodial parents and those who watch your children. They can be updated as needed and reprinted in just a few minutes.

Be Safe Do A Background Check

As parents we have to be very diligent about our children. We have to make sure that those who take care of them are good people, those who teach them are who they say they are and those who they play with are not someone who has a history of violence. Granted, you cannot check out children and you cannot find out about every single person you come in contact with but other parents (neighbors), coaches, day care workers, new friends in the household and teachers should be scrutinized. We don’t want to live a paranoid life but we absolutely want to make sure that our children are kept as safe as possible.

There are some simple things you can do to check on people around you. First, you should sign up for the Florida Sexual Offenders and Predators email alerts on their website. They will send you an email whenever a registered sexual offender moves into your neighborhood. Second, you should do a background check on every teacher, your new special friend, coaches and/or daycare worker that will be teaching your child. Remember your children are counting on you to do the responsible thing and make sure, as much as possible, that everyone you let into your lives is not a potential threat to their safety. Yea, it may sound a little creepy checking out your “special friends”, the kid’s coaches and teachers and daycare workers but you can never be too safe. I know that most places do a background check on those who will be teaching children, taking care of children, etc., but you, as a parent, deserve to have that information as well. So, if they will not provide a copy to you then you can get one yourself.

We have not had much opportunity to keep this blog updated as would like. And we are still looking for contributors to add informative articles for our readers. If you are a law enforcement officer or know of one who would like to write up a short informative article for our readers we would love to hear from you. There are lots of websites out there that we could reference here and as we find time we will be adding them so please be patient.

We have read through a few websites for resources and information that you might find informative: http://www.jaxparent.com/ They have links and resources for parents throughout the websites. Some of them are very informative and others not so much. Give them a try and she what you think. Of course, the Duval County Health Department is always very helpful http://www.dchd.net/ They have information on keeping your child healthy. Then on the other end of the spectrum we have the Jacksonville Office of the FBI. http://jacksonville.fbi.gov/ They have great informational resources open to the public. They also have tip sheets for preventing crime, protecting yourself and your family and much more.

And finally, we have created a blog for the TriCounty Area of Nassau, Clay and St. Johns County areas. This blog has resources for those particular counties in Northeast Florida. Here at the MAP for Life blog are all about keeping parents informed and educated on how to keep children safe as they can be. Our only goal is education and information for parents. We hope to encourage local law enforcement officers to participate and write essays on safety. We encourage our readers to stay informed and be aware of their neighbors and surroundings when they are with their children in parks, the malls, and anywhere in public.

Welcome to the Mothers Against Predators Blog site. We are a volunteer organization that hopes to gather information and resources for other parents to learn how we can keep our children safe from predators. Mostly the blog will focus on what we can do everyday to keep them from harm. As we grow we will include other information as well. Mainly we want to point to where we can find useful information about our neighborhoods, how to talk to our children about strangers and becoming aware of what dangers there might be out there for our children.

We are based here in Jacksonville Florida and include Clay County in our postings. We are creating a sister site for St. Johns, Nassau and Baker Counties at: www.mapforlife.info So if you live in those counties we will have the site up and running within the next week or so.
