<p>Where Did It Start?</p>

<p>Family Fun Day is something we started in 2020 for our 9th Anniversary. We decided that we would make it a day dedicated to enjoying one another, a &#8220;yes day&#8221; of sorts, a day to reflect on God&#8217;s goodness in the past year within our family.</p>

<p>This year&#8217;s Family Fun Day was packed full of sweet memories, and sweet donuts. We began the day with donuts from a nearby bakery. This wasn&#8217;t your average DD, these donuts were decadent! </p>

<p>After loading ourselves full of sugar, we headed out to play a round of mini golf. The weather was phenomenal and the baby slept in my carrier almost the entire time. It was a dream. It was decided that whoever won would pick what we did for lunch. So I chose pizza. <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f609.png" alt="😉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<p>We enjoyed a nice pizza lunch overlooking a nearby lake, and then the friendly competition fired back up at our house. First we played a round of Pop-a-Shot, the winner of that chose Mario Kart, and the winner of that chose Quirkle.&nbsp;</p>

<p>By the time we were ready to simmer down from all the competition, it was already dinnertime. It was getting late at that point, so our dinner while I put&nbsp; some favorite photos and videos from this past year onto the TV. The boys laughed so hard as they caught glimpses of themselves being so goofy, and I teared up seeing how quickly the baby grew. It was a joy to take time to reminisce and thank God for all the memories.&nbsp; </p>

<p>It really was a treasure of a day and I highly recommend building your own Family Fun Day.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ideas for Building a Family Fun Day </p>

<p>1. Determine to keep things positive, no matter what. Make a rule of &#8220;no negative talk&#8221;. You&#8217;ll find that you smile more, and you might get even get a good laugh between parents as you catch one another biting their tongue. As you keep things positive, you are more open to saying yes to more things, and you can look back at the end of the day at a day that you are truly proud of. </p>

<p>2.&nbsp; Plan as much, or as little, as you&#8217;d like. In our Family Fun Days, we plan one activity that we need to drive to, and keep things inside the house pretty spontaneous. </p>

<p>3. Prepare your home ahead of time. Take time to clean and get chores done in the days ahead so that you can truly let loose and enjoy the day. </p>

<p>4. Know your purpose as a family. It doesn&#8217;t have to be an official purpose statement (although I would never advise against it!), but it is good to have a simple encouraging word for your kids about what the family means to you. This is a great day to share vision and dreams for your family. </p>

<p>5. Be ready to encourage individual family members. Ponder for a few minutes what you love about your family members. Encourage them in how they have grown as a helpful member of the family this year. </p>

<p>6. Create a way to remember your special day. Take a family photo, paint rocks, or purchase something that will spark a memory. We bought special golf balls this year and can&#8217;t wait to get the chance to use them again!</p>

<p>Since I was very young, I had dreams of living on a farm. I wanted to plant my own crops, raise my own livestock. But God has other plans for me so far. My family lives very comfortably outside of a busy city in what would be labeled a &#8220;luxury townhome&#8221;. It is rather luxurious and I&#8217;m grateful, but it&#8217;s a far cry from the quiet and challenging experience of living on a farm. <br><br>Perhaps you find yourself in a similar boat. We stay near the city because that&#8217;s where the jobs are. My husband and I decided early on that instead of having a house with land in the country, we would spare him the commute time. His drive home from work is about 10 minutes long and the value of saving the stress of driving through traffic has been immeasurable. <br><br>So I think it&#8217;s worth it. But meanwhile in the townhome&#8230;<br><br>I&#8217;m always thinking about how I can have the high quality of food that I desire for my family. <br><br>There are very few farms left in our area, but we&#8217;re so blessed to have an incredible CSA that we have access to. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Is a CSA?</h2>

<p>CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. You pay a certain amount up front to be members for the season, and in return the farm gives out shares of what was harvested that week. What&#8217;s even better is that you get to support a local farm and keep what&#8217;s left of local farming alive in your county!</p>

<p>Sometimes at CSA pickup, there is an abundance of produce, and my refrigerator can hardly contain all the vegetables! Other times, it&#8217;s not so much. Even from my townhouse non-farming life, I find myself praising the Lord whenever we get rain after a dry spell.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">This Week&#8217;s Share</h2>

<p>This week I took home beets, a bunch of basil, onions, green leaf lettuce, kale, a couple pounds zucchini, a couple pounds of cucumber, and a cantaloupe. We also have pick-your-own flowers, herbs, and cherry tomatoes, so I certainly took advantage of that! Soon we&#8217;ll have peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, and garlic.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="771" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Hand-holds-a-bouquet-of-freshly-picked-flowers-at-a-flower-farm-771x1024.jpg" alt="Hand holds a bouquet of freshly picked flowers at a flower farm" class="wp-image-80800" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Hand-holds-a-bouquet-of-freshly-picked-flowers-at-a-flower-farm-771x1024.jpg 771w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Hand-holds-a-bouquet-of-freshly-picked-flowers-at-a-flower-farm-226x300.jpg 226w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Hand-holds-a-bouquet-of-freshly-picked-flowers-at-a-flower-farm-768x1020.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Hand-holds-a-bouquet-of-freshly-picked-flowers-at-a-flower-farm-1157x1536.jpg 1157w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Hand-holds-a-bouquet-of-freshly-picked-flowers-at-a-flower-farm-1542x2048.jpg 1542w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Hand-holds-a-bouquet-of-freshly-picked-flowers-at-a-flower-farm-scaled.jpg 1928w" sizes="(max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to Store Your CSA Share</h2>

<p>The first thing I do when I bring home our share is separate the beet greens from the beets. This keeps the greens from wilting right away. I like to put the greens in a glass on my countertop like a vase of flowers because I think there really is some beauty to those beet greens. Everything else gets stored in the fridge.</p>

<p>Ah, camping. The crisp cool morning air, the smell of the campfire, the leisurely hikes. But alas, you&#8217;ve welcomed a new member or two to your family since you&#8217;ve last spent the night in a camping tent. Can you really camp with kids? Can you camp with a baby? Of course! You&#8217;ll be glad you did.</p>

<p>We just returned from our first camping trip with a 7 year old, 5 year old, and 8 month old baby. We enjoyed our time at a state park, complete with a lake and nearby waterfalls. Now that I know what to expect, I&#8217;m happy to share some things I learned, starting with the one thing I forgot &#8211; a fly swatter. Seriously, don&#8217;t forget your fly swatter.&nbsp;</p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What to Bring When Camping With Kids (Fly Swatter Included)</h2>

<p><br>&#8211; Free packing List for Camping with Kids<br>&#8211; Packing List &#8211; Kids Version</p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tips for Camping with Kids</h2>

<p>1. Camp with friends who also have kids. </p>

<p>This is a tried and true method. If you have another family who has kids around the same age as your kids, they will easily start playing together. Camping with friends also gives you more stamina as the grown ups of the bunch. No matter how hard things gets, it never seems quite so hard when you have friends to share the experience with. I was actually sick the last time we went camping. In all honesty, I was happier to be sick in a tent on the beach than at home. </p>

<p>2. Don&#8217;t camp for more than 2 nights in a tent. </p>

<p>We went for it &#8211; 3 nights. And, nope, it didn&#8217;t work out. But we did feel like we unlocked a little known secret. That secret is the take-all-the-time you need method. Instead of rushing for the 11am scidadle time, we took our sweet time packing up on day 2, and we left for home after dark on night 3. The kids slept in the car through our red-eye drive home, and my husband and I enjoyed an uninterrupted chat. </p>

<p>3. Keep meals simple </p>

<p>Simple doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean &#8220;boring&#8221;, but it means if you want something fancier than a hot dog cooked over the campfire, you&#8217;ll need to prep ahead. You&#8217;ve likely been playing hard and exploring all day, and your kids are quickly going to become hangry as soon as you arrive back at the campsite. Cook the chicken or taco meat ahead of time and you&#8217;ll be thanking yourself when you only have 5 minutes of reheating to do. </p>

<p>4. Keep beds cozy </p>

<p>We are so devoted to having a cozy sleeping situation that we purchased a cargo carrier to store all the squishy bedding that we bring along. ring that favorite stuffy. <br>-Stay at a campground with lots of amenities, including a camp store.<br>-Call ahead to ask about wildlife activity in the area.<br>-Make each bed very cozy.</p>

<p>-Pack in an organized fashion. This will really come in handy when the sun is going down and you are scrambling to sort out things that can go in your tent vs things that would attract wildlife to your tent.</p>

<p>-Download any maps you might need for driving from place to place.</p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tips for Camping with&nbsp;Babies</h2>

<p>-Keep them warm at night. Check out the chart to determine how many layers your baby should be in for the temperature. When we had a below 50 degree night, we used the 3.5 level for my 8 month old, along with a onesie, a bodysuit, booties, and mittens. I had a beanie hat available for her, but she seemed warm enough to be comfortable. Her ears were slightly cool, and her face seemed to be her normal temperature. The beanie still came in handy when I took her outside in the brisk morning air. There was no need for a coat either because she could move around just fine in her sleep sack. Also good to note is that the sleep sack opens from the bottom, making those nighttime diaper changes a little less chilly. </p>

<p>-Always have a banana on hand &#8211; if your baby has started solids, a banana is the absolute best camping food. I had other premade baby foods for my little one, but the issue came when that baby spoon I was feeling her with would drop to the ground. Sure, we had soap and water, but it just never felt very clean. Enter: The Banana. It comes with its own wrapper, you can mash it up a little if need be before opening it, and it serves as an extra little snack for mom or dad when baby only wants half an ounce. </p>

<p>-Have a plan for setting your baby down outside. Life can get busy at the campsite when children are running around, and being able to use two hands is sometimes of the essence. Our baby was on the verge of crawling, but not yet there when we went camping, so a large picnic blanket with a couple pillows and toys on it was great. If your baby is crawling, you might want to consider setting them down in a portable play yard or pack n&#8217;play. If you are setting up or tearing down camp, a baby carrier or stroller are good options. Note: Don&#8217;t bet on being able to set them down in the tent, as tents can get very warm. </p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Seriously Easy Meal Ideas</h2>

<p><br>-Breakfast<br>Eggs, sausage, toast, oatmeal, fruit<br>-Lunch<br>PB&amp;J, hot dogs<br>-Dinner<br>-Snacks</p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ideas for Fun Camping Memories </h2>

<p><br>Campground amenities and events &#8211; Oftentimes, campgrounds will come with some fun perks. As a kid, I stayed at a campground that came with a waterpark and wild west show. The State Park we stayed at this past weekend had junior ranger programs and yoga on the lake. </p>

<p><br>Toys for setting up camp &#8211; By all means, get your kiddos to help set up camp. My </p>

<p><br>-Backyard Games<br>-Water Fun<br>-scavenger hunt<br>-treasure hunt<br>-play an instrument<br>-nature journaling / travel journal<br>&#8211; pick up a souvenir<br>-shadow puppets at night (don&#8217;t laugh too loud!)<br>-roast marshmallows and tell stories around the campfire<br>&#8211; for many more outdoor summertime ideas, check out this free summer bucket list!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/tower-paddle-boards-a-family-paddle-boarding-1024x683.jpg" alt="tower-paddle-boards-a family paddle-boarding" class="wp-image-115" style="width:512px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/tower-paddle-boards-a-family-paddle-boarding-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/tower-paddle-boards-a-family-paddle-boarding-300x200.jpg 300w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/tower-paddle-boards-a-family-paddle-boarding-768x512.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/tower-paddle-boards-a-family-paddle-boarding-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/tower-paddle-boards-a-family-paddle-boarding-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Whether it&#8217;s a sailboat, a kayak, a canoe, or a paddleboard, being on the water is a perfect way to check off those summer bucket list items on a hot day.</p>

<p><strong>2. Build a Sandcastle on the Beach</strong></p>

<p>There&#8217;s something so therapeutic about playing with sand. Bring <a href="https://amzn.to/3KIh8Y2" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/3KIh8Y2">buckets and shovels</a>, add water and some shells, and enjoy!</p>

<p><strong>3. Swim at the Pool</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1010" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20230216_211838039-EDIT-edited-1010x1024.jpg" alt="a woman and a child lounge in a pool in Puerto Rico" class="wp-image-106" style="width:509px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20230216_211838039-EDIT-edited-1010x1024.jpg 1010w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20230216_211838039-EDIT-edited-296x300.jpg 296w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20230216_211838039-EDIT-edited-768x778.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20230216_211838039-EDIT-edited-1516x1536.jpg 1516w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20230216_211838039-EDIT-edited-2021x2048.jpg 2021w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1010px) 100vw, 1010px" /></figure>

<p>It wouldn&#8217;t feel like summer if we didn&#8217;t check off this bucket list item (at least every week!). Swim as often as possible to build up your kids&#8217; swimming skills and stay safe with some great <a href="https://amzn.to/3Xg51c5" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/3Xg51c5">swim vests</a>!</p>

<p><strong>4. Splash In the Puddles</strong></p>

<p>After a rainy day indoors, there&#8217;s no greater way to burn some energy than to get outside and jump in some puddles. Get those rain boots out and find the deepest puddles you can for some splashing!</p>

<p><strong>5. Go Fishing</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210809_005152843-768x1024.jpg" alt="Brothers fishing with fishing poles beside a lake. There is a boat in the lake." class="wp-image-91" style="width:505px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210809_005152843-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210809_005152843-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210809_005152843-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210809_005152843-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210809_005152843-scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p>Our family hasn&#8217;t actually done real fishing yet, mostly because I have never tried it in my life. Perhaps this year is the year for catching some actual fish! In the meantime, we use a <a href="https://amzn.to/4c2hl4b" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/4c2hl4b">practice rod and reel</a> and enjoy &#8220;fishing&#8221; for hours.</p>

<p><strong>6. Hunt for Rainbows</strong></p>

<p>Kids love the magic of finding a rainbow. Run outside as soon as the rain stops and the sun comes out to check off this colorful summer bucket list item!</p>

<p><strong>7. Play in the Sprinklers</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/elena-rabkina-a-girl-happily-runs-through-a-sprinkler-1024x768.jpg" alt="a girl happily runs through a sprinkler. <p>Running through the sprinklers is a refreshingly wonderful way to cool off on a hot day. Minimal effort and loads of fun!</p>

<p><strong>8. Throw Water Balloons</strong></p>

<p id="summerbucketlist">My kids ask to play with water balloons more than anything else during the summertime. If you loathe cleaning up all those little shards of latex from your lawn, <a href="https://amzn.to/3KDRqnx" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/3KDRqnx">reusable water balloons</a> provide an incredible, long-lasting alternative.</p>

<p><strong>9. Play in a Creek</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-wearing-rainboots-plays-in-the-riverbank-768x1024.jpg" alt="Boy wearing rainboots plays in the riverbank" class="wp-image-80799" style="width:504px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-wearing-rainboots-plays-in-the-riverbank-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-wearing-rainboots-plays-in-the-riverbank-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-wearing-rainboots-plays-in-the-riverbank-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-wearing-rainboots-plays-in-the-riverbank-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-wearing-rainboots-plays-in-the-riverbank-scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p>Playing in a creek can be just as fun as a day at the beach. Bring lunch and snacks because you might end up being there for a long while!</p>

<p><strong>10. Visit a Splash Pad</strong></p>

<p>Grab some friends and head over to your local splash pad! It is a wonderful cross between playing in a pool (without the deep water), and playing in the creek (without the mud). What&#8217;s not to love?</p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Summer Nights</h2>

<p><strong>11. Watch Fireworks</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/sebastien-cordat-a-child-and-adult-watch-fireworks-together-1024x683.jpg" alt="a child and adult watch fireworks together. <p>It doesn&#8217;t have to be the 4th of July to check off this summer bucket list item! Many ball games, festivals, and boardwalks end with fireworks. </p>

<p><strong>12. Stay Up Late to Catch Fireflies</strong></p>

<p>Get the kids out of the house right after the sun goes down and enjoy the tiny glow of fireflies passing by. Bring some<a href="https://amzn.to/3KDRKmf" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/3KDRKmf"> jars</a> with you and see who can catch the most!</p>

<p><strong>13. Go Stargazing</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="714" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/jonathan-forage-a-family-camps-under-the-stars-in-the-woods-at-night-714x1024.jpg" alt="a family camps under the stars in the woods at night. Photo credit jonathan-forage" class="wp-image-83" style="width:510px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/jonathan-forage-a-family-camps-under-the-stars-in-the-woods-at-night-714x1024.jpg 714w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/jonathan-forage-a-family-camps-under-the-stars-in-the-woods-at-night-209x300.jpg 209w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/jonathan-forage-a-family-camps-under-the-stars-in-the-woods-at-night-768x1102.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/jonathan-forage-a-family-camps-under-the-stars-in-the-woods-at-night-1071x1536.jpg 1071w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/jonathan-forage-a-family-camps-under-the-stars-in-the-woods-at-night-1427x2048.jpg 1427w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/jonathan-forage-a-family-camps-under-the-stars-in-the-woods-at-night-scaled.jpg 1784w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px" /></figure>

<p>Growing up in New York City, I was more likely to see the occasional celebrity than an actual starry night star. Stargazing on vacation with my family still holds many a fond memory in my heart.</p>

<p><strong>14. Watch a Concert in the Park</strong></p>

<p>Concerts in the park are a fun and free way to make memories with your family and enjoy a warm evening outside. </p>

<p><strong>15. Glow Sticks and Light-Up Fingers</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220716_004522802.PORTRAIT-768x1024.jpg" alt="Boy smiles as he holds glowing finger lights up to his face at night." class="wp-image-99" style="width:503px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220716_004522802.PORTRAIT-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220716_004522802.PORTRAIT-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220716_004522802.PORTRAIT-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220716_004522802.PORTRAIT-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220716_004522802.PORTRAIT-scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p>It&#8217;s amazing how much <a href="https://amzn.to/3yYRhIF" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/4ekgZra">fun little colored lights</a> can add to dusk. Disclaimer: Make sure you have extras because the neighbor kids are sure to want to join in too!</p>

<p><strong>16. Drive-In or Outdoor Movie</strong></p>

<p>We used to go to the drive-in before our neighborhood went ahead and got a giant screen and invited a food truck to the neighborhood field. It makes me feel like I&#8217;m in college again and I love it.</p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Animals &amp; Nature</h2>

<p><strong>17. Go for a Hike</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-walks-through-green-woods-768x1024.jpg" alt="Boy walks through green woods" class="wp-image-80797" style="width:525px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-walks-through-green-woods-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-walks-through-green-woods-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-walks-through-green-woods-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-walks-through-green-woods-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-walks-through-green-woods-scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p>Even the hottest summer days can be enjoyed by going for a hike in the woods. Kids build stamina, develop balance, and explore until their hearts are content. </p>

<p><strong>18. Ride a Horse</strong></p>

<p>Horseback riding has been on my summer bucket list for years now. We don&#8217;t have many options where we live, but I think a little travel would be worth the trail ride.</p>

<p><strong>19. Go Camping</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210810_151428130-768x1024.jpg" alt="Child looks out at a lake from inside his tent. He is wearing a winter hat and pajamas." class="wp-image-80" style="width:506px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210810_151428130-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210810_151428130-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210810_151428130-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210810_151428130-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20210810_151428130-scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p>A few years ago, our family fell in love with camping and we have been keeping it on our summer bucket list every year since. It has been a great experience venturing out to the wilderness with the newest member of our family this year. Check out my best tips for <a href="https://mothersnotebook.com/2024/05/29/camping-with-kids/">camping with kids and babies</a>!</p>

<p><strong>20. Play in the Mud</strong></p>

<p>If you have kids who love to get their hands dirty, this one is for you! Our boys love digging in some wet dirt, slopping it onto a tree, and making mud faces on the tree trunk.</p>

<p><strong>21. Catch Frogs</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-smiles-as-he-holds-a-tiny-frog-in-his-hands-in-front-of-him-768x1024.jpg" alt="Boy smiles as he holds a tiny frog in his hands in front of him" class="wp-image-80795" style="width:505px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-smiles-as-he-holds-a-tiny-frog-in-his-hands-in-front-of-him-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-smiles-as-he-holds-a-tiny-frog-in-his-hands-in-front-of-him-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-smiles-as-he-holds-a-tiny-frog-in-his-hands-in-front-of-him-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-smiles-as-he-holds-a-tiny-frog-in-his-hands-in-front-of-him-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Boy-smiles-as-he-holds-a-tiny-frog-in-his-hands-in-front-of-him-scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p>Hopefully we&#8217;re not the only ones, but my boys really love to catch frogs. This certainly makes it on our summer bucket list!</p>

<p><strong>22. Visit a Sunflower Field</strong></p>

<p>I have one child who asks periodically throughout the year if the sunflowers are ready to visit yet. Once the entire field of sunflowers is ready, it is truly a sight to behold and definitely makes it on the summer bucket list.</p>

<p><strong>23. Pick Berries</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="771" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/pxl_20240517_1740260757983203133810820956-771x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-166" style="width:513px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/pxl_20240517_1740260757983203133810820956-771x1024.jpg 771w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/pxl_20240517_1740260757983203133810820956-226x300.jpg 226w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/pxl_20240517_1740260757983203133810820956-768x1020.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/pxl_20240517_1740260757983203133810820956-1157x1536.jpg 1157w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/pxl_20240517_1740260757983203133810820956.jpg 1506w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px" /></figure>

<p>When I mentioned to my boys that I wanted us to go pick strawberries a couple days ago, they were less than enthusiastic. I somehow convinced them that they only had to be there for 10 minutes, and after about an hour, I really had to work hard to convince them to leave. It can really be a thrill to find those juicy red berries!</p>

<p><strong>24. Build a Natural Fort</strong></p>

<p>Find some sticks and start stacking! It doesn&#8217;t take more than that to start building an epic fort in the woods.</p>

<p><strong>25. Visit a Farm</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20211014_185059493.PORTRAIT-768x1024.jpg" alt="Big brother pulls little brother behind him in a red wagon." class="wp-image-178" style="width:487px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20211014_185059493.PORTRAIT-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20211014_185059493.PORTRAIT-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20211014_185059493.PORTRAIT-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20211014_185059493.PORTRAIT-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20211014_185059493.PORTRAIT-scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p>Yesterday, we had &#8220;Farm Day&#8221;, which makes it past my summer bucket list onto the list of one of my very favorite days of the year. We get invited each year to the farm of a lovely Amish family. We have the joy year after year of chatting with their family, petting the animals, riding in the buggy, and partaking in some of my favorite foods. Regardless of the type of farm, this is sure to be a blast!</p>

<p><strong>26. Care for a Garden</strong></p>

<p>Caring for a garden is so great for kids. They experience the fun of playing in the dirt and get to enjoy watching as their little seeds grow into plants. Give kids their own kid-size gardening tools and they&#8217;ll be begging to help! </p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Foodie Fun</h2>

<p><strong>27. Make a Homemade Popsicle</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="682" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/fernando-andrade-a-hand-raises-a-homemade-popsicle-682x1024.jpg" alt="A hand raises a homemade popsicle in front of a green tree. <p>My boys learned a couple days ago that if you can&#8217;t finish your snow cone in one sitting, then you can always put a spoon or popsicle stick in the middle of it and freeze it to make a homemade popsicle!</p>

<p><strong>28. Host a BBQ</strong></p>

<p>Oh the smell of some burgers and dogs on the grill. Hosting a BBQ is always a friendly way to bring people together.</p>

<p><strong>29. Campfire with S&#8217;mores</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/a-plate-of-graham-crackers-and-marshmallows-and-chocolate-by-a-campfire-1024x683.jpg" alt="a plate of graham crackers and marshmallows and chocolate by a campfire" class="wp-image-118" style="width:512px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/a-plate-of-graham-crackers-and-marshmallows-and-chocolate-by-a-campfire-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/a-plate-of-graham-crackers-and-marshmallows-and-chocolate-by-a-campfire-300x200.jpg 300w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/a-plate-of-graham-crackers-and-marshmallows-and-chocolate-by-a-campfire-768x512.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/a-plate-of-graham-crackers-and-marshmallows-and-chocolate-by-a-campfire-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/a-plate-of-graham-crackers-and-marshmallows-and-chocolate-by-a-campfire-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>No sticky food says summertime better than an ooie-gooie s&#8217;more next to a campfire. Pre-set your s&#8217;more ingredients into ready-made s&#8217;more stacks so that no one is straining their eyes to find the milk chocolate once the sun goes down! Rough it with sticks from the ground, or use these <a href="https://amzn.to/3xixVh9" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/3xixVh9">extra long s&#8217;more sticks</a> for the kiddos!</p>

<p><strong>30. Visit a local Farmer&#8217;s Market</strong></p>

<p>No matter where you live (except for Antarctica maybe), there is no time like the summer to get the freshest local food that your town has to offer. Add some fresh fruit and veggies to your summer bucket list and you won&#8217;t be disappointed!</p>

<p><strong>31. Ice Cream Truck</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="819" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/karl-muscat-woman-sits-on-the-road-beside-an-ice-cream-truck-819x1024.jpg" alt="woman sits on the road beside an ice cream truck - Photo credit: Karl Muscat" class="wp-image-117" style="width:512px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/karl-muscat-woman-sits-on-the-road-beside-an-ice-cream-truck-819x1024.jpg 819w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/karl-muscat-woman-sits-on-the-road-beside-an-ice-cream-truck-240x300.jpg 240w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/karl-muscat-woman-sits-on-the-road-beside-an-ice-cream-truck-768x960.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/karl-muscat-woman-sits-on-the-road-beside-an-ice-cream-truck-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/karl-muscat-woman-sits-on-the-road-beside-an-ice-cream-truck-1639x2048.jpg 1639w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/karl-muscat-woman-sits-on-the-road-beside-an-ice-cream-truck-720x900.jpg 720w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/karl-muscat-woman-sits-on-the-road-beside-an-ice-cream-truck-360x450.jpg 360w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/karl-muscat-woman-sits-on-the-road-beside-an-ice-cream-truck-scaled.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px" /></figure>

<p>I&#8217;ll admit that we didn&#8217;t save this summer bucket list item for summer. When we heard that music on the first hit day of the year, we just had to go for it.</p>

<p><strong>32. Outdoor Seating at a Restaurant</strong></p>

<p>Gotta love that time of year where restaurants open up the walls and bring the tables outside! No matter where you are, you might just feel like you&#8217;re on vacation.</p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Get Creative!</h2>

<p><strong>33. Shower Curtain Paintings</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="890" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200729103802604_COVER-890x1024.jpg" alt="A little boy paints a shower curtain outside." class="wp-image-176" style="width:509px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200729103802604_COVER-890x1024.jpg 890w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200729103802604_COVER-261x300.jpg 261w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200729103802604_COVER-768x883.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200729103802604_COVER-1336x1536.jpg 1336w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200729103802604_COVER-1781x2048.jpg 1781w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px" /></figure>

<p>When our kiddos were super young, my neighbor invited us to do some outdoor finger painting, and we LOVED it! The boys painted the curtain, the ground, and most of all, themselves.</p>

<p><strong>34. Paint Rocks</strong></p>

<p>If the messy shower curtain idea is a little much for you, try painting some rocks. Find the smoothest rocks you can and see what creative pictures and words you can make to remember this fun summer.</p>

<p><strong>35. Nature Journaling</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="771" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20240502_184116940-771x1024.jpg" alt="Boy writes in his journal while sitting on a bench in an azalea garden." class="wp-image-177" style="width:475px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20240502_184116940-771x1024.jpg 771w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20240502_184116940-226x300.jpg 226w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20240502_184116940-768x1020.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20240502_184116940-1157x1536.jpg 1157w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20240502_184116940-1542x2048.jpg 1542w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20240502_184116940-scaled.jpg 1928w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px" /></figure>

<p>Nature journaling is one of our very favorite outdoor activities. Just grab a <a href="https://amzn.to/3XsqxKy" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/3XsqxKy">journal</a> and a pencil and copy down the beauty of nature all around you to the best of your ability.</p>

<p><strong>36. Make a Bird Feeder</strong></p>

<p>As the years go by, I become increasingly more interested in the names of the birds I am seeing. Pretty soon I&#8217;ll be really old and I&#8217;ll go bird-watching. For now, I&#8217;ll just feed them.</p>

<p><strong>37. Fairy / Dinosaur Garden</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/katherine-cavanaugh-EREFh4YkoUg-unsplash-1024x683.jpg" alt="A tiny house in a fairy garden. Photo credit: Katherine Cavanaugh" class="wp-image-183" style="width:472px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/katherine-cavanaugh-EREFh4YkoUg-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/katherine-cavanaugh-EREFh4YkoUg-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/katherine-cavanaugh-EREFh4YkoUg-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/katherine-cavanaugh-EREFh4YkoUg-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/katherine-cavanaugh-EREFh4YkoUg-unsplash-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Even my boys love Grandma&#8217;s fairy garden. Of course, they might be pretending to be Godzilla as they tromp through it, but they still get great fun out of it. This little addition to your garden is sure to be a worthwhile summer bucket list item.</p>

<p><strong>38. Scavenger Hunt</strong></p>

<p>Kids of all ages love a good scavenger hunt. A couple times each summer, we dress up like pirates and hit the local trails to do a family treasure hunt.&nbsp; If your family wants to make some quality memories this summer, a scavenger hunt is definitely one way to do it!</p>

<p><strong>39. Chalk Drawings &amp; Games</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220615_152452724-768x1024.jpg" alt="Boy jumps along alphabet letters written on a trail with sidewalk chalk " class="wp-image-123" style="width:510px;height:auto" srcset="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220615_152452724-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220615_152452724-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220615_152452724-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220615_152452724-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/PXL_20220615_152452724-scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<p>What kid doesn&#8217;t love <a href="https://amzn.to/4eczrBY">chalk</a>? I recently watched in amazement as a brilliant mother drew lines on the concrete and had a whole row of preschoolers following her every move as though she were the Pied Piper! Add this to your summer bucket list for an extremely low prep great time.</p>

<p><strong>40. Lemonade Stand</strong></p>

<p>A lemonade stand is a great summer bucket list item for the entrepreneurial kids among us. So many great life skills are bundled up into this one experience!</p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Making Family Memories</h2>

<p><strong>41. Playground Hop</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/hisu-lee-brothers-hug-each-other-as-they-plat-at-the-playground-1024x683.jpg" alt="Brothers hug each other as they play at the playground. <p>You know the best playgrounds and so do your kids. Why not try to see how many playgrounds you can hit in one day? Our personal record is three. </p>

<p><strong>42. Visit a theme Park</strong></p>

<p>Even if you aren&#8217;t as much of a thrill-seeker as you were before you had kids, a theme park can still be a wonderfully memorable time with your family. Add this to your summer bucket list and I know your family will appreciate it. </p>

<p><strong>43. Attend a Family Camp</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/tyler-nix-a-large-family-looks-out-at-the-ocean-while-holding-hands-1024x683.jpg" alt="A large family looks out at the ocean while holding hands. <p>This is one that I&#8217;m so happy to add to my summer bucket list simply because it was our annual tradition in my family growing up. I have so many beautifully vivid memories of learning the Bible, playing silly games, and enjoying the lake.</p>

<p><strong>44. Carnival or County Fair</strong></p>

<p>Carnivals and County Fairs can make kids eyes light up around every corner. Jump on that ferris wheel and check off this memorable bucket list item that you might just make into a tradition.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/grace-ho-swings-and-ferris-wheel-at-a-carnival-683x1024.jpg" alt="Swings and Ferris Wheel at a carnival. <p><strong>45.&nbsp; Take a Staycation or Day Trip to a Nearby Town</strong></p>

<p>Have a &#8220;Staycation&#8221; and explore what your local area has to offer. Not as expensive as traveling to a vacation destination, but guaranteed to be just as fun!</p>

<p><strong>46. Play Mini Golf</strong></p>

<p>No matter where we visited when I was a kid, my mom was sure to find the local mini golf. We got pretty good at it and I bet you can too.</p>

<p><strong>47. Serve Together</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mothersnotebook.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/hannah-busing-Zyx1bK9mqmA-unsplash-1-1024x683.jpg" alt="Hands in a circle as a team. <p>It&#8217;s a joy to see kids getting so excited about making something in life more beautiful. It is such a beautiful things to clean up the town together or make a meal for a friend in need.</p>

<p><strong>48. Have a Garage Sale</strong></p>

<p><br>This Mother&#8217;s Day has been a fun one for me. It began on Friday when my son&#8217;s preschool hosted a Muffins with Mom day. The school did a great job, from the sunflower backdrop photo booth to the giant strawberries they served alongside the mini muffins. My son also did a great job reciting his poem, painting his handprint artwork, and dictating his note which read that he loves me &#8220;because I play Loopin&#8217; Louie and MarioKart&#8221; with him. The note was cute, although slightly convicting because I&#8217;m sure I don&#8217;t do either of those things nearly enough. <br><br>Today, I woke up on Mother&#8217;s Day doing the mom things. I opened my eyes to the baby making noise and kicking her feet. As I nursed her, I realized my boys were already up, busy illustrating their own adventure books. I prepared one of my favorite breakfast spreads &#8211; scrambled eggs, sourdough pancakes, bacon, fruit, and a matcha latte. We all thoroughly enjoyed it, and it was a great start to the day. <br><br>After the calm of breakfast came the storm of scrambling to get to church on time. We made it, but barely. My dad always says &#8220;You&#8217;ll be blessed because you came&#8221;, and once again, he was right. A Sunday service is always worth the frenzy it takes to get out the door. <br><br>After a quick playdate lunch at home, my husband gave me the sweetest gift of an afternoon off. I love any opportunity to rest and reflect. <br><br>MOTHER&#8217;S DAY CAN BE HARD<br><br>If you&#8217;re anything like me, Mother&#8217;s Day has not always been an easy day for you. Maybe you don&#8217;t talk to your mother, or you are longing to be a mother. Perhaps you are missing a dear child, or you are feeling tired, lonely, or degraded in your motherhood.<br><br>In my case, my mother received a cancer diagnosis during my honeymoon, and passed away only two short months after my wedding day.<br><br>I found myself at 22 years old in a new part of the country, as a new bride who was completely removed from anyone familiar. And my mom &#8211; my lifeline, my sounding board, my biggest fan &#8211; was gone. <br><br>My heart sure did ache on that first Mother&#8217;s Day without her.<br><br>FACING GRIEF DURING MOTHER&#8217;S DAY<br><br> I recall the sting of sitting in a church service where a cheery Mother&#8217;s Day video played on the big screen. It was a sweet video of a mother holding the hand of her precious little daughter, as they frolic through a field of lavender, a voiceover saying how amazing mothers are. I could feel my heart sink. <br><br>I felt guilty for hating the sweet Mother&#8217;s Day video, but I couldn&#8217;t deny that my heart was just so raw. <br><br>BATTLING INFERTILITY DURING MOTHER&#8217;S DAY<br><br>Fast forward to my first full year married. I quickly learned that it wasn&#8217;t going to be easy for me to get pregnant. Mother&#8217;s Day was not only going to be difficult because I lost my own mother, but because the only baby I had carried up until that point had resulted in a miscarriage.<br><br>If you&#8217;ve lost your mother or if you find yourself with empty arms this year, my heart goes out to you. I know this day can be so hard as everything around you seems to be pointing to your broken heart. Sometimes that weight can feel like too much to bear. <br><br>A RESTORED PERSPECTIVE <br><br>Perhaps you dread Mother&#8217;s Day as I did. Years of brutal Mother&#8217;s Days went by before and I finally recognized that a perspective shift was in order. My mother was not coming back, and I had no way of knowing if babies would be in my future. I decided to view Mother&#8217;s Day differently &#8211; I would now see it as a day where I&#8217;d count my blessings and thank God. <br><br>Instead of a heart that grieved over what was lost, God gave me a heart of gratitude.<br><br>FOCUS ON THE BLESSINGS<br><br>As I looked around me, I saw my precious mother-in-law, I saw my dad&#8217;s beautiful new bride, and I saw various mentors that God gave me along the way. I decided that this Mother&#8217;s Day would be a Mother&#8217;s Day where I would think of these women and focus on the blessings that they are. And I&#8217;m not just saying that &#8211; these are some seriously strong, loving, and amazing women in my life!<br><br>My focus was off of my own situation, and onto my appreciation for the &#8220;mothers&#8221; in my life. <br><br>GRATITUDE DESPITE THE PAIN<br><br>Now here we are, another Mother&#8217;s Day. Yes, I absolutely still cry every time the old hymn, &#8220;Great Is Thy Faithfulness&#8221; is sung in church &#8211; I swear I can hear my mom&#8217;s voice in the crowd. And yes, my heart gets pricked a bit whenever I think of those two babies that I didn&#8217;t get to hold on this side of heaven. But now, here I am, by the grace of God, holding my third baby, as the older two run and play before me. <br><br>I feel truly grateful and undeserving of the miracles God has entrusted me with. <br><br>TO THE MOTHER WHO DOESN&#8217;T FEEL CELEBRATED <br><br>For some mothers, even those with a crew of happy healthy kids, Mother&#8217;s Day can feel like a weight on your shoulders. In chatting with many mom friends through the years, I have concluded that a lot of us have felt down by those we love on Mother&#8217;s Day.<br><br>DON&#8217;T LET EXPECTATIONS RUIN YOUR DAY<br><br>I learned a few years into marriage that if I want to celebrate something, the best thing I can do is communicate with my husband. If I want flowers, breakfast in bed, a restaurant reservation, or a break from the kids for one hour so that I can take a long-awaited bubble bath &#8211; I tell my husband. We&#8217;re both tired and it just never goes well for me if I expect him to be a mind-reader.<br><br>At the end of the day, I can either go to bed angry and bitter that everyone in my family didn&#8217;t go out of their way to serve me, or I can have a day that was well-celebrated as hoped. <br><br>HAPPY MOTHER&#8217;S DAY!<br><br>Whatever situation you find yourself in, I hope that this day is a lovely one for you. <br></p>
