11 Down, 11 To Go: Keeping Score Of The 2027 MotoGP Rider Contract Announcements

We are at the halfway mark of MotoGP contract announcements, with statements coming at the rate of one a day at the moment. July 2nd was Gresini's turn to confirm that Joan Mir and Dani Holgado will be riding for them next year. Previously, we saw Marc Marquez, Pecco Bagnaia, and Pedro Acosta all confirmed, Yamaha announce the departure of Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins and the arrival of Ai Ogura and Jorge Martin.

Part 6: Gresini Announce Joan Mir And Dani Holgado

Another day, another rider announcement. This time official confirmation from Gresini Racing that they have signed Joan Mir and Dani Holgado for the 2027 MotoGP season. The announcement only mentions 2027, not beyond, but the deals are for two years.

For Joan Mir, it will be the first time he races for a satellite team in MotoGP. The Spaniard was recruited straight into the Suzuki factory MotoGP team after one year in Moto2 and winning the Moto3 championship in 2017. He won the MotoGP title at the second attempt during the pandemic-struck 2020 season, but never reached the same heights again. When Suzuki pulled out of MotoGP, leaving riders Alex Rins and Joan Mir without a seat, Honda signed Mir to replace the departing Pol Espargaro alongside Marc Marquez in the factory Honda team.

Part 5: Yamaha Announce Ai Ogura And Jorge Martin

Another day, another rider announcement, and today is the corollary to yesterday's announcement that Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins would be leaving Yamaha. Today, the news is that Jorge Martin and Ai Ogura will be taking their place at Yamaha for the next two season, racing with them through 2028.

Ogura's and Martin's move to Yamaha have been known for a long time. Rumors around Martin emerged during the preseason, while reports about Ai Ogura were first published in mid April.

This was the 95th running of the Dutch TT at Assen, the first race being held in 1925, with only World War II and the global Covid-19 pandemic disrupting its unbroken streak. There must be something special about an event for it to have lasted so long, and the fact that 108,388 people turned up on Sunday for the 95th edition suggests it is very special indeed.

And it was. We had three outstanding races. In Moto3, Max Quiles and David Almansa slugged it out for most of the race, Quiles pushing home his advantage on the last lap to take victory. In Moto2, David Alonso, Manu Gonzalez and Senna Agius slugged it out all race, Alonso making the decisive move into the GT Chicane on the final lap.

That race had the additional spice of Intact GP teammates Gonzalez and Agius knowing that they are battling for the same seat in the Tech3 KTM MotoGP team in 2027 as well as the win, while David Alonso has until Austria to convince HRC that he deserves the seat in the factory team they promised him, after a poor start to the season generated some doubt.

Part 4: Yamaha Announce Quartararo And Rins To Leave Yamaha At End Of Season

In a piece of news that will surprise very few people indeed, Yamaha have announced that both Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins will be leaving Yamaha at the end of this season. It has been widely known (though still not officially announced) that Quartararo will be joining Honda for the 2027 season and beyond, while Alex Rins has openly admitted that he would be out at Yamaha for several weeks now. Where Rins will end up is not yet known.

With the Yamaha announcement made and both seats now vacant, together with the announcement that Pecco Bagnaia will be joining Aprilia next year, this clears the way for Jorge Martin to be announced at Yamaha in the coming days. Whether Ai Ogura is announced at the same time is yet to be seen.

Marco Bezzecchi Released From Hospital, Will Travel Home Sunday Night

Marco Bezzecchi has escaped without serious injury from his horrific high-speed crash at the Ramshoek, Turn 15 at Assen in the second lap of the Dutch TT MotoGP race. The Aprilia Racing rider lost the front at one of the fastest and scariest corners on the circuit, and started tumbling when he hit the gravel, traveling a long way and narrowly missing a tire wall at Assen.

After the crash, Bezzecchi was transferred to the Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen hospital for further examinations, the Italian complaining of severe pain. There were no signs of neurological damage and had normal mobility in his limbs.

Bezzecchi was released from hospital after undergoing a number of scans, with no signs of serious injury. Aprilia released the following brief statement after he was discharged from hospital:
