Assen MotoGP Saturday Subscriber Notes: Why Aprilia Dominated, And Why KTM Was Allowed To Race Despite Technical Failures

We knew that an Aprilia was going to win the sprint race on Saturday at Assen after the Noale factory locked out the first four places in qualifying for the first time ever. The Aprilia RS-GP is in its element at Assen: lots of very high speed flowing corners where the bike can use its advantage to carry a lot of speed while holding a much tighter line that its rivals. The four Aprilias were quickest in both Sector 2, with the Veenslang and Ruskenhoek, and Sector 4, with Meeuwenmeer, Hoge Heide, and the Ramshoek. Those are the two fastest sectors of the track, so no wonder that is where the RS-GP is making the difference.

The question was, which Aprilia? Jorge Martin took his first pole for nearly two years, and his first pole on an Aprilia. Ai Ogura had yet another good weekend, starting off on the right foot and qualifying on the front row again, the first time he has has back-to-back front row starts. Marco Bezzecchi had obvious pace during practice, and a front row start put him in prime position to capitalize on that. And Raul Fernandez would have been on pole if his lap hadn't been canceled for exceeding track limits on the exit of the final chicane.

2026 Assen MotoGP Free Practice 2 Result: Bezzecchi Leads Aprilia Brigade

The Aprilias were back in the limelight on Saturday morning, with Marco Bezzecchi leading the way throughout FP2 and eventually being joined by the Trackhouse duo of Raul Fernandez and Ai Ogura in the top 3 - despite an early technical issue for Fernandez forcing him onto his second machine. Fabio Di Giannantonio was best of the rest in 4th, three tenths of a second off the lead and with Marc Marquez closely behind him on the timesheets - the Spaniard making a late bid for the top 5.

The Intact GP duo bookended the final practice session at Assen, Manu Gonzalez starting things off from top spot, before allowing the Aspar duo some time in the limelight, but ending with Senna Agius in the lead. The Australian was a tenth and a half quicker than teammate Gonzalez at the chequered flag, while Friday’s leader David Alonso was best of the rest in 3rd - nearly four tenths of a second slower than Agius.

Saturday brought another hot start to the day for the lightweight class and once again it was Alvaro Carpe’s time to shine, the FP1 leader also claiming FP2 by nearly two tenths of a second. Adrian Cruces led the way early on before getting demoted to second, while busy rubbing fairings with Guido Pini, and the top 3 was completed by the quickest man in Friday Practice, Joel Kelso. Marco Morelli was another familiar presence up in 4th, with Joel Esteban joining the top five - only three tenths off the lead.

The heat arrived in Assen shortly after midday, and though we had all been expecting it, it still took people by surprise. There is a real difference between expecting it will be hot, and actually experiencing it. And nobody really arrives at Assen expecting to be met by a blast furnace.
