Thursday MotoGP News Round Up: Crutchlow In Again, Aragon Replaces Hungary In 2027, Brno 850 Test Update

It is that time of the year when the MotoGP news cycle kicks into a higher gear. So here are a few bits and pieces that have crossed my path recently. Cal Crutchlow is in again for Johann Zarco at the next two MotoGP rounds, Hungary is off the 2027 calendar while Aragon becomes a reserve circuit, and the factories are preparing for the upcoming 850cc test after Brno, to be held behind closed doors.

To the surprise of nobody paying attention, Cal Crutchlow has once again been called up by the LCR Honda team to replace the recovering Johann Zarco. Zarco is still waiting for the burns on the leg he injured in the first corner crash at Barcelona to heal before he can have surgery on the ligaments he tore in his knee. As a consequence, he will likely be out for quite some time.

On Friday evening as I walked out of the WorldSBK paddock at the end of a long, hot, sunny day in Aragon there was talk of a party.

There was nothing unusual about it. Most race weekends provide an excuse to celebrate. Racing has changed a lot over the years, but some traditions remain. Nobody wastes an excuse to open a bottle and relax. It turned out that the party was fancy dress. The winner, not for the first time this year, was Nicolo Bulega. Well...the winning costume was Bulega.

When the awards were being made the winner simply said, “I'm Nicolo Bulega. I always win. Why would tonight be any different?” On Sunday during the Superpole Race he could have been forgiven if Bulega had thought to himself, “I might have the harder tyre but why will this race be any different to anything else this year...”

The most telling moment of the Hungarian round of MotoGP at Balaton Park came on Sunday afternoon, in the press conference. After doing the usual deflecting of a question about whether we can believe what he says, telling the assembled media that he had tested his speed on Friday, realized he had a chance, and then paced himself, Hungarian journalist Niki Kovács asked Marc Márquez a more direct question. Did he go to Mugello to prepare himself to win this weekend?

"Yes." At last, an honest answer. The truth is that we all know how ambitious Marc Márquez is, although sometimes, it is hard to comprehend. Even for those that work with him. Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi came up to the media center at the end of the day to talk to journalists, and admitted he had been surprised by just how fast Marc Márquez had been on Sunday. "But what I want to say is that I'm surprised that I'm still surprised!"

There was chaos at the first corner in the Balaton Park MotoGP race, but there was also a fearsome duel between two future teammates and eventually, a masterful win by Marc Marquez. And it all came after Marquez arrived in Hungary proclaiming that it was far too early for him to be trying to win races, as his shoulder wasn't yet strong enough to manage.

David, Neil and Adam talk through the events of the Hungarian Grand Prix at Balaton Park. They discuss the huge crash in the first corner at the start, and explain exactly how it happened, as well as discussing changes to the rules proposed to prevent a repeat. MotoGP To Ban Holeshot Devices From Silverstone

The first corner crash in Barcelona, in which Johann Zarco tore tendons in his knee after missing his braking point, is having repercussions for the starting grid in MotoGP. According to Oriol Puigdemont on Motorsport.com, MotoGP will create more space between the grid rows from the Sachsenring round of MotoGP, and ban the use of holeshot at the start from the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The extended grid has already been agreed. From Sachsenring, the grid rows will be moved a further 3 meters apart, so there will be 12 meters distance between the rows, instead of the current 9 meters. The objective is to create more space between the riders so they don't all arrive at Turn 1 at the same time.

Paddock Pass Podcast Episode 561: Relentless Bulega marches on

The first half of the WorldSBK season is in the books and Steve and Gordo get you up to date with the latest news from inside the paddock as Nicolo Bulega continues his relentless drive to a first Superbike title. The Italian is still perfect for 2026 with 18 wins from 18 starts but Sunday's Superpole Race saw him pushed harder than at any point thus far. His harder rear tyre proved the difference maker but, as ever, Bulega found a way to win.

What must Iker Lecuona be thinking? The Spainard, 15 times a runner-up finisher this year, is hunting for his first WorldSBK victory. He's hurting too because he knows how close he keeps coming to that success. His reward for his hard work will be seen this weekend in MotoGP where he'll replace Alex Marquez.
