Balaton Park MotoGP Saturday Subscriber Notes: Lies, Damn Lies, And Rider Media Statements

Saturday's sprint at Balaton was not a great race. Or rather, it was a pretty dull race, the worst of 2026 and brought back painful memories of some of the processional sprint races of the 2025 season. The most exciting part of the sprint race was being buzzed by a very low flying acrobatic helicopter while the bikes sat on the grid after the sighting lap, which had me very briefly pondering that if anything went wrong, much of the grid would be wiped out and the sport would be changed forever. But of course nothing did. Because, like MotoGP riders, they spend so much time practicing to get it right.

So why did we end up with such a processional sprint race? Some of that - perhaps a lot of that - is due to the track. The layout makes passing difficult, and the combination of new asphalt in a few corners and much higher temperatures than yesterday meant that it was hard to find grip.

Although endurance is still a question mark for Marc Marquez, the reigning world champion enjoyed his Saturday morning at Balaton Park, taking over the final practice session in its final couple of minutes. Marquez ended the morning a tenth of a second ahead of colleague Fabio Di Giannantonio, while Friday’s leader, Pedro Acosta, kept close in third. Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi was a quarter of a second slower in 4th, with Fermin Aldeguer continuing to show good speed in the top 5.

2026 Balaton Park Moto2 Free Practice 2 Result: Gonzalez Still The Leading Light

A sunny Saturday morning helped Manu Gonzalez reclaim the all-time lap record in the intermediate class after a brief interference from David Alonso. The championship leader left it until the final couple of minutes to climb back into top spot, on fresh rubber, denying Alonso by a tenth of a second. Despite a bit of a moment at turn 11, Tony Arbolino finished FP2 on a high, climbing into 3rd, ahead of early session leader Dani Holgado. The Spaniard had led for most of the morning’s action and managed to hold onto 4th despite not doing a proper time attack to end the session.

Clear blue skies set the scene for Saturday at Balaton Park and the lightweight class took advantage to hunt down the lap record from the very beginning. By the end of FP2, Maximo Quiles wrote his name under that achievement, the championship leader getting back into the limelight in the final 12 minutes of the session and continuing to improve every lap until the chequered flag. The Spaniard ended up a quarter of a second quicker than compatriot David Muñoz, with early FP2 leader David Almansa only three hundredths of a second back, in third.

Balaton Park MotoGP Friday Round Up: Moto3 Bombshells, Fast KTMs, And Annointed Winners

Normally on Friday the big story from a MotoGP round is whether a particular rider appears to have strong pace on a used medium tire. Not this Friday though. At lunchtime on Friday, at Balaton Park, we received the news that Adrian Fernandez had been disqualified from the first six rounds of the 2026 Moto3 championship. His crime? Well, none actually, but the seals on the engines tested after the first four rounds, and then again after Mugello, were found to have been tampered with, a breach of the Moto3 engine durability regulations.

The word bombshell tends to be bandied about freely in MotoGP - no, Marc Márquez not making it straight through to Q2 does not qualify as a bombshell - but I think it is safe to use the word bombshell here. There have been various disqualifications for minor breaches of the technical regulations before - most recently for Red Bull KTM Ajo rider Brian Uriarte from the Barcelona Moto3 race, for not using the oil provided by the official supplier - but nothing quite so drastic and so major as this.
