Over the last few weeks Jimmie Johnson has won three of the last seven Sprint Cup races and darn near everyone has been hailing Johnson as the first man to win four consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup championships. But Johnson’s coronation parade stumbled on the second lap of Sunday’s 500-mile race at the Texas Motor Speedway. After qualifying fifteenth Johnson tangled with Sam Hornish and hit the wall hard.

Johnson was able to limp around to the pits and drive into his garage where his crew spent an hour repairing their ruined car. The Hendrick Motorsports people replaced and rebuilt half the car while Johnson sat in the cockpit, waiting to salvage the best possible finish from a bad day. Eventually, he made it home 38th, 123 laps behind, and his 184-point lead over Mark Martin going into the race was cut to 73 points.

“We still have the points lead, but it definitely wasn’t the day we wanted,” Johnson said. “We did not want to lose points like that. It was lucky we had a big margin. We’re going to two great tracks for us (Phoenix and Homestead-Miami) and we’ll just keep racing. We’ve been saying all along that anything can happen. I just wish that Sam could’ve waited a little longer before he hit something. But he lost it and hit me and off we went.”

Meanwhile Kyle Busch was the man to beat in Texas and enjoyed his best Cup race in months. Kyle had won the Truck and Nationwide races earlier in the weekend, recording his 39th and 40th NASCAR victories over the past two years. He looked like winning the Cup race, too, but while leading with just two laps to go Kyle’s Joe Gibbs Toyota ran out of fuel. He led 232 laps, but not the ones that counted.

Older brother Kurt was hard on Kyle’s tail when his engine hiccoughed and Kurt came through to score his second win of the year in Roger Penske’s Miller Dodge, putting him fifth in the points table, 171 behind Johnson. Denny Hamlin finished second in Texas in another Joe Gibbs Toyota. Matt Kenseth was third while championship contender Mark Martin finished fourth, cutting Johnson’s point lead in half.

Even though he made ground on Johnson in Texas, Martin said he was concerned primarily with finishing as well as possible in the championship rather than believing he could steal the title from Johnson’s grasp at the eleventh hour. “I’ve got my hands full with all those guys in the top six positions in points,” Martin remarked. “Two guys (Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart) who’ve knocked me out of championships are breathing down my neck, so the race is still on! I don’t know why everybody tries to count this thing out, instead of just waiting and watching. There’s still two races to go and anything can happen.”

Jeff Gordon qualified on the pole in Texas but was unable to take advantage of team-mate Johnson’s travails. Gordon was never a factor in the race, struggling to stay on the lead lap and finally finishing thirteenth. Gordon hangs onto third in points, 112 behind Johnson. He was 194 points behind going into the race.

Nor did Juan Pablo Montoya enjoy a good day in Texas. Midway through the race Montoya slithered into Carl Edwards and the pair crashed, finishing their days in the garage. The incident effectively ended Montoya’s long-shot championship hopes.

“Even the slow ones are fast.”

So said Denis Jenkinson as we stood watching final practice for the Grand Prix of Monaco in the early summer of 1978, our feet against the barrier between Tabac and the swimming pool.

That’s how close you could get back then. We could, had we been so inclined, have reached out and touched the cars.

It was a privilege for me to watch with Jenks that day on the harbour front in Monte Carlo. The Sage of Crondall was a man I looked up to. Despite his diminutive stature. He was a mentor, an inspiration for those of us new to the business of working at a Grand Prix.

I had travelled to the Principality to make a radio programme about a weekend in the life of the Brabham team, and in particular the fortunes of driver John Watson who lived, not in tax exile, but in the south of England where my radio station was based. His co-conspirator in those gorgeous Brabham Alfa-Romeos was one Niki Lauda who, at breakfast in the Loews hotel one morning, suggested to my (first) wife that she might enjoy a day with him while I was working. Thanks Niki. She declined the offer from the double World Champion.

But I digress. The reason I mention the words of Denis Jenkinson is that we have seen two Grand Prix drivers unceremoniously sacked during the course of the season just past. And, equally importantly, both were replaced by men who appeared to do no better in the same car. First, Sebastien Bourdais was relieved of his duties at Toro Rosso, to be replaced by a very young Spaniard called Jaime Alguersuari. Just weeks later Nelsinho Piquet was fired from the Renault team by none other than his personal manager Flavio Briatore – who also happened to be the team manager. Remember that at this point Briatore was well aware of what had happened in Singapore in 2008, making his decision to sack Piquet Minor completely unfathomable. It was a major strategic error. Sitting in a sulk back home in Brazil young Piquet and his father decided to get their revenge. Briatore must wish he’d kept the lad in a Renault until the end of the year.

Are these two drivers really so inadequate? Even the bad ones are good, even the slow ones are fast. If you don’t believe me, ask Maurice Hamilton what it’s like to be thrown around a Grand Prix circuit by Martin Brundle for a handful of laps. (Or read about it in the new edition of Motor Sport). These cars are hugely demanding on both reflexes and stamina. It could just be that there is such a thing as a bad racing car.

How well did Alonso do in the 2009 Renault? Not very well. And he’s generally acknowledged to be one of the very best there is. How well did Sebastien Buemi do in the Toro Rosso? Better than Bourdais, yes, but nothing to set the world alight. This is not to say that either Piquet or Bourdais deserved to stay on the grid until they collected their pensions. No, I am simply questioning the strategy of sacking sportsmen who don’t deliver immediately. In football there has been a spate of sacking managers who don’t produce the instant results that are somehow expected.

In their early days, racing drivers can disappoint to deceive. Before they got into good Grand Prix cars James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Keke Rosberg, Nigel Mansell and Jenson Button, to name a few, did not display championship potential. I suggest both Renault and Toro Rosso acted too hastily. Mr Briatore might even agree.

Returning to Monaco it was Patrick Depailler who won, beating Lauda into second place while Jody Scheckter pipped Watson for third. But my goodness those Brabhams looked and sounded so good. As we know, none of this mattered. Mario Andretti made them all look silly once he got his hands on the Lotus 79. Even the fast ones looked slow.

The news this morning that Toyota has pulled out of Formula 1 with immediate effect is not a total surprise, but it caps a very bad 48 hours for Formula 1. On Sunday night, after the teams and media had packed up and left the Abu Dhabi circuit, Bridgestone also announced its withdrawal from Grand Prix racing, at the end of 2010.

In terms of long-term damage, the Bridgestone decision is by far the worst of the two. The Japanese tyre company has given so much to the sport and seamlessly introduced the return of slicks to F1 this year without a blip to its quality and supply. Companies with the experience, technology, capacity and financial willing to supply F1 tyres are limited in the extreme, and given that a new supplier would ideally need two years to prepare for the mammoth task of providing rubber to the whole Grand Prix grid, this is a serious blow.

So who will step in? Michelin is the only company with recent F1 experience that stands out as the obvious option. But it withdrew from F1 at the end of 2006 in disgust, in the belief it was persecuted by the FIA following the debacle at Indianapolis in 2005 and in the wake of the governing body’s decision to impose a single tyre supplier for 2008. Competition is at the heart of Michelin’s ethos – so will it even want to become the sole supplier for 2011? New FIA president Jean Todt has his first major crisis on his hands

And so to Toyota. The world’s biggest automotive manufacturer will be remembered in F1 terms for one thing: failure. In 139 races since its debut season in 2002, Toyota has a string of second places to its name and a best finish of fourth in the constructors’ championship. It has also spent more money than any other team.

There have been some good people working for Toyota over the years, including current team principal John Howett, and they deserve more for their efforts. But Toyota just never got F1. Its corporate culture always seemed to strangle the ingredient of inspiration that Grand Prix teams always need. A series of conservative cars, conservative driver choices – and even conservative race strategies – made the team something it should never have been in F1: a non-entity.

Individuals such as Howett will be missed, particularly following his good work for the Formula One Teams’ Association last summer. But the team will be forgotten very quickly.

The announcement does open the door for the Sauber team, of course. Following BMW’s similar tail-between-its-legs decision to quit the sport, the team was left as a reserve on the entry for 2010. If its mysterious new owner, investment consortium Qadbak, can deliver, the team will presumably take up the 13th team place on the grid.

So Honda, BMW and Toyota are gone, and Bridgestone are on the way. Who’s next? Renault? Now that really would rip the sport to shreds.
