High on a hill lived a lonely goatherd… the Hotel Edelweis conjures up images of lederhosen and thigh slapping, but none was to be had here. Though it is up in the mountains of the beautiful volcanic island of Flores and the hotel is one of few decent places to stay in Bajawa. In the centre of Bajawa, the hotel is opposite 2 decent restaurants and surrounded by small shops for all your water and toiletry needs. A bemo (local bus) stops at the top of the road.
Friendly but not exactly homely. The rooms are simple (cold water and all) and there is a communal area for breakfast.
This hotel is very basic. The bed however is comfortable enough to allow a good night sleep. The location is good because there is a good restaurant called Lucas just in front and a small shop where u can buy some water and snacks.
The room was on top and it has a reallh nice view, it has warm water and clean room, a newer one in the back of the hotel — was interesting in its own. The room was extremely basic consisting of a bed, two small pieces of furniture, a clothes drying rack, and a few lights. Thankfully it was clean and free of bugs and odors.the restaurant across the street had a good menu. The food was average.
The new building is set back from the road behind the main building so is quieter then the cheaper older rooms. The bed was comfortable enough – take a sleeping bag liner to Flores as the cleanliness of the sheets is questionable in many places. The room itself was reasonably clean. The bathroom was basic (tho better then in Ruteng) and there was cheap hot water buckets available.
Facilities: breakfast was ok. There is no restaurant nor internet.

Seventeen Island Riung

Riung is a small fishing village on the north coast of Ngada district, which gives access to the 17 Islands Marine Park. Some of the islands have beautifully white, sandy beaches, and offer great snorkelling with good reefs and interesting sea life. Boats can be arranged from every hotel in town, and there are several dive masters in Riung to take you on interesting dives. If snorkelling or diving is not your thing, fishing and swimming in the crystal-clear waters is another option. A visit to Flying Fox Island gives you the opportunity to see these animals as they fly when the sun sets. Another attraction further along Riung’s coast are the giant lizards, although it is quite rare to actually see one. These lizards are more brightly coloured than the Komodo Dragons.

Riung village, on the coast north of Bajawa, offers beautiful coral gardens in the Seventeen Island National Reserve, as well as thousands of flying foxes.

The National Park, Pulau Tujuhbelas (Seventeen Islands), in fact has more than 20 islands, but, in a gesture of patriotism, the number was declared to 17, to conform to Indonesia's Independence Day, August 17.

The biggest island is Pulau Ontoloe which is hilly, covered with short grass and a few trees, and fringed with mangroves. On the north coast of Ontoloe Island, the large fruit-eating bats called flying foxes mass in which the mangrove tress.

The population of Riung is a mixture of Islamic Buginese and Catholics from the hinterlands. Corn and rice of catholic farmers are added to the fish of the Islamic fishers. The farmers export copra, coconuts, dried fish, tripang and tuna. The women weave typical sarongs of the Riung-area, with yellow and red flowers on a blue-black background. They are not very cheap to buy. There are rumors that Komodo dragons are hiding in a cave near the Damu Bay, but Indonesian representatives of the WNF never confirmed it really were Komodo Dragons that were hiding there. A dragon, of unknown species, was found in the environment of the cave in 1991 and now lived in a cave of the KSDA. They will show you the captured dragon for a small fee. You can buy chicken eggs to feed the animal.

Rental Terms & Conditions

1. International Driving License or Tourist Driving License is required for foreigners, and National Driving License for Indonesian Nationalities.
2. The rental rates are unlimited mileage, includes taxes and service charges but does not inclusive of car insurance. Full insurance coverage own risk access maximum US $ 50 per-accident.
3. Self-driving rental rates are for 24 hours a day. In the event of additional hours, the renter will be charged @ USD 5 per-hour. If you wish to extend use of the car please inform us not less than 24 hours before the expiry date and time, otherwise the car may be pre-booked by another party. If the renter does not inform the rental company, more than 48 hours after expiry date and time, the rental company has right to report to the police department that the mentioned car is lost, all risk and act taken by police department will be the renter responsible.
4. The renter will be fully responsible to any damage, theft of the car or part of it, if the car is driven not on the road (e.g. beach, field, etc.).
5. The renter, will be fully responsible to any consequence caused by letting or giving the car to be driven by a person other than the renter, in contract.
6. It is not permitted to drive the car to outside the island without approval of car rental company.
7. An advance deposit is not needed to make a booking, and your car rental would be prepared on your requested date and time.
8. All payments are to be paid in full, in cash upon signing of contract. Payment made in cash, Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)
9. If the renter wishes to return the vehicle prior to end of contract period, a fee of 50% of the remaining days will be charged. One-day rental charge will be charged to renter who cancels their reservation less than 24 hours/on delivery day. Refunds do not apply to insurance.
