Ten dollars from the sale of each Detroit Snob, glam tee-shirt ($35 to $48) and 10% of all sales at the Peacock Room during the event will benefit IO, which is racing to meet a February 29th deadline to capture a $25,000 matching grant from Hollywood filmmaker Bob Shaye. IO Founder, Terry Blackhawk will also debut her latest book, "The Light Between," with 60% of proceeds benefitting IO.

Together, Detroit Snob and The Peacock Room are redefining vintage Detroit. Parking is free of charge inside of the Park Shelton's garage on Woodward Ave.

Breaking: Gov. Snyder Recommends $6.15 Million for MCACA

Moments ago, Governor Snyder released his Fiscal Year 2013 Executive Budget Recommendations calling for $6,150,000 for the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA).

The recommendation represents an investment of $5 million in state General Fund / General Purpose dollars and $1.15 million in federal dollars from the National Endowment for the Arts. Overall, the recommendation means an increase of $3,582,600 from FY12 to FY13 - nearly quadrupling the state's investment in arts and culture.

The Governor explains, "This increased funding will help enhance the "Quality of Place" for local communities in Michigan through increased investments in arts and cultural programs." This recommendation and comment affirm his earlier commitment to increase support for the MCACA as he clearly recognizes the importance of arts and culture to Michigan's economy, communities and citizens.

It's amazing to think of how far we've come in the last three years. It is almost three years ago, to the day, that Governor Granholm recommended the elimination of the MCACA. The increase represented in today's budget is no doubt a result of the impact, hard work and dedication of every arts and cultural organization, artist and advocate in Michigan.

While we should all take a moment to celebrate this news, our work is not yet done. As you know, this is just the first step in the budget process as each house will now review the Governor's budget and provide their respective recommendations. Know that ArtServe will keep you up to speed as we progress through the budget process.

10 Ways to Write Blog Headlines for More Clients & Book Sales via @coachjudy

Blog headlines are far more important than the copy beneath them. If you don't write irresistible headlines for your blog title, you will lose a potential buyers attention in a few seconds. That's serious.

Apply These Top Ten Headline Ideas and Prosper

Your Headline...

1. Needs to compel and propel your social media reader to stay and read all of your blog until your call to action.

The call to action can be "subscribe to my free site information or ezine" or (add to purchase a book …) to a book or product you want to sell. Two best headline examples are questions or how- to statements. They must grab your readers by the collar and hook them, so they will take action.

2. Must be attention-getting.

Use emotion in your copy writing. People buy because they connect emotionally, not because they need something. One example: "Do you make this one mistake that can cost you xxxx?" (cost you what? Money?)

3. Make it benefit-driven.

How your product or service will solve your audience's problem, concern, or challenge. For instance, "How can you know your project will succeed before you invest much money into it?"

4. Make an irresistible offer.

"How You Can Get to Best Seller Status with 1/2 Price Coaching Offer and Bonus Free Book."

5. Make a wild promise and pay up.

Most people don't like hype, but will notice your promises in your benefit statements. Back it up with the how.

6. Keep it simple.

Some headlines go on and on to include many problems and benefits. Stick to a one line for the best results.

7. Include one specific top benefit.

The top headline of your blog should taut results your reader wants. They want answers to their specific questions and concerns. Remember, general doesn't sell; specifics do.

8. Build curiosity or suspense.

For example, "How to Overcome Writers' Block with Snake Dancing." What has snake dancing to do with writing? Sometimes the improbable can hook your reader's attention, and that's what you want.

9. Must be "you" centered.

Instead of saying "I can do this for you" write it "You will get this benefit when you..." Check out your blog titles. Do they need a lift? Too many headlines and copy beneath use too many "I's" in them which turn off your readers.

10. Include keywords in your headlines to make them more searchable.

Prepare a list of good keywords that fit your niche. Some should be high competition like "blog marketing" that gets 110,000 searches a month. Others should be long-tail key words that are more (less) competitive, yet reach fewer people in your target audience. One example is "blog online marketing strategies" that gets 6500 searches in a month. You can check your niche keywords at Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

If you don't pay attention to your blog headlines and make them as irresistible as you can, you will wonder why you aren't getting increased traffic each month and why you aren't getting those sales you want. Educate yourself by joining blogs and forums.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Flint Public Library, 1026 E. Kearsley St., Flint. The African American Read-In will begin with story time for families and young children at 11 a.m. with "Follow the Drinking Gourd" by Jeanette Winter, a story of freedom using the stars.

At noon The Delta Academy, girls ages 11-14, will share readings and poetry. According to Linda Gulley, the Delta Academy Chair, "Our girls have participated in the program for four years. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to learn about African-American literature. Our girls are excited to share their oratorical presentations." Delta Academy is sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Flint Alumnae Chapter.

At 12:30 p.m., hear positive, motivational spoken word presentations by the Alpha Esquires, a young men's leadership and development club, sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Epsilon Upsilon Lambda (alumni) Chapter.

The Flint Public Library has held a Read-In since 2008. In 1990, the first African American Read-In was sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. In 1991, the National Council of Teachers of English joined in the sponsorship. The Read-In has been endorsed by the International Reading Association. Over a million readers of all ethnic groups, from 50 states, the District of Columbia, the West Indies, and African countries have participated. The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities.

What's the Need?

Since the new year began, I can't really say I've spent as much writing as I have thinking about the elements of writing. My editor has me taking a break from my current WIP (Work In Progress) and indulging in a new story. This time around, I'm allowing myself time to really think it through before the pen hits the paper. My thoughts...what are the needs?

What are the needs of my characters?
Every character has a need. They're often translated as the character's motivation in the story, but there are instances when a character has needs that they are not truly aware of until they discover these needs at the close of the story. While at other times, a character identifies what they are in need of right at the opening of the book. As writers, it is as important to know what the needs are of our characters as it is to know what drives them from where the story begins to "the end". Without a forward movement, there's not story.

What are my needs as a writer?
How well can you serve your readers if your own needs are not being met? Are you in touch with your needs as a writer? This can be physically, emotionally, spiritually, etc. But in regards to your writing needs, are you in need of constant feedback? Are you in need of that instant gratification? Are you in need of more journaling time to focus on what it is that you escape when you allow yourself to be absorbed into the world of your writing? As a writer, take the time to:
1. Identify your needs,
2. Assess whether your needs are being met,
3. Evaluate how your writing responds when these needs are not being met,
4. Track your needs are as they change,
5. Create a realistic plan to ensure that your needs are fulfilled.

In this week's Spotlight we feature "House of Ghosts" by Lawrence Kaplan. Eighty-year-old Preston Swedge is found decomposing at his kitchen table. For Joe Henderson, neighbor and ex-cop, it is good bye and good riddance. The two had a running history and none of it was good. If Joe received a ten dollar bill each time a bourbon fueled Swedge called in a complaint about a never caught intruder named Rothstein, he could have paid for a year of his kid's college. Captain Swedge was back in Italy in 1944. For Joe, the old man was losing his mind, ranting about saving the world and other wartime drivel. At the estate sale to dispose of Swedge's worldly possessions, Joe saves the deceased's personal papers from the trash. A withered photo of a pilot rocks Joe when he reads the inscription Paul Rothstein. Joe's trawling the internet finds Rothstein was killed in action August 1944. Maybe Swedge wasn't losing his mind after all. Joe was sure of one thing: Swedge didn't suck down Wild Turkey because he missed a Jewish kid from Brooklyn. Days later, diaries written between 1938-1944 by Swedge and Rothstein are found hidden under the floor in Swedge' s study. Their lives were mirror images. Both diarists are the same age, but opposite in financial circumstances, relationships, and their views on world events. Their differences place them on an inevitable collision course-- Rothstein, a member of a secret Jewish defense group on a rogue mission to bomb the gas chambers at Auschwitz, a plan conceived by his older brother Jake and Swedge under orders from the Assistant Secretary of War John McCloy to stop the marauder and assure the deaths of the remaining 300,000 Jews deported from Hungary. History shows Rothstein never completed his mission, and archived Air Force records list no enemy aircraft in the area the day of his death. How did Swedge arrange to have him shot down? When Joe's contact in the FBI says Jake is still alive, he embarks on a crusade to find the man who has the last piece of the puzzle.

The Spotlight Author

Lawrence (Larry) Kaplan grew up in a middle class section of Union, New Jersey. A child of the 1950s, he says that he "played punch ball in the street, didn't go to camp, and didn't talk back." It was a world where kids rode their bikes to get where they needed to go, mothers stayed home, and no one had two cars. "And most important," Larry notes, "people gave a damn about each other." His dad was a dental technician; this inspired Larry to go into dentistry. He's been in solo practice in Scotch Plains, New Jersey since 1983. But as "a self-confessed history junkie," Larry was drawn to the subject of World War II. "I have read more than a hundred books on the most destructive period in world history," he said. His interest in writing, Larry says, began, "When I realized I could write as well as the people I was reading." His two interests combined upon hearing the stories of his late mother in law, about her memories of American bomber jets flying over Auschwitz where she was being held prisoner. She often asked, "Why didn't they target the camps?" Larry set out to discover the reason. His original plan was to write a book of non-fiction about it. Research was tedious and difficult. He spent hundreds of hours researching in Princeton's library; he interviewed people; he searched for information wherever he might find it. Somewhere during that time he became concerned, "I had DDS after my name, not a PhD in history," he said. He feared that publication of a non-fiction book might be difficult without the scholarly credentials. So Larry began to frame all the research and information he had gathered into a book of fiction. He had already begun work on a book in what he hoped would be a series of detective novels, about a "washed-up Westfield NJ Police Department Detective, Joe Henderson." He put his first book aside and worked instead to shape the World War II material into a mystery/detective framework, ultimately giving life to House of Ghosts. With the completion of this book, Larry manages to combine the solidity of an historical novel with the excitement and mystery of the detective genre. It's a laudable first offering in what will be a long series of Joe Henderson books, from a unique new voice in the world of fiction. The Spotlight Author

Television Show Rusty Bucket Kids Approved for Film Incentives

LANSING – The Michigan Film Office announced today that an episode of the television series The Rusty Bucket Kids: Hunting History's Heroes has been approved for a film incentive from the state. The episode, entitled "Edison: The Possibilities of Imagination," will be shot at Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad near Flint and the Thomas Edison Depot in Port Huron.

"This project tells the story of one of our hometown heroes here in Michigan – Thomas Edison – while utilizing some of the great historical attractions we have in the state." said Carrie Jones, director of the Michigan Film Office. "In addition to sharing this important piece of Michigan history, the cast and crew for this shoot will be made up almost entirely of Michigan residents."

The Rusty Bucket Kids was awarded an incentive of $33,604 on $80,010 of projected in-state expenditures. The approval was made prior to December 31, 2011 under the previous tax credit structure and is not part of the $25 million allocation for Fiscal Year 2012. The project is expected to hire 26 Michigan workers with a full time equivalent of one job.

This brings 2011 numbers to 23 projects approved with $24,797,656 in incentives being awarded on $59,600,189 of approved production expenditures for the year. These projects are expected to create 1,978 Michigan hires with a full time equivalent of 401 jobs.

The Rusty Bucket Kids is an "edutainment" children's television series featuring a time-traveling brother and sister. In the pilot episode, the young time travelers meet a 15-year old Abraham Lincoln. Episode 4, approved for the incentive, will feature Thomas Edison at age 13 as he is growing up in Port Huron, Mich. The Rusty Bucket Kids series will plan to air on Detroit Public Television, and a DVD of the series will be distributed worldwide by Bridgestone Media Group in Grand Rapids.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Film Review Committee, comprised of senior MEDC staff including the Michigan Film Commissioner, reviews all completed applications.

Using the statute to guide approval decisions, preference is given to projects that best meet the following criteria:

1. The production is financially viable.
2. Utilization of existing infrastructure (studios, post-production facilities, equipment rental, etc.).
3. The number and wage levels of direct jobs for Michigan residents created by a production.
4. Ability to show Michigan in a positive light and promote the state as a tourist destination.
5. Magnitude of estimated expenditures in Michigan.

Since the incentives took effect in April 2008, the Film Office and the Department of Treasury have approved a total of $385,863,470 in film incentives on $980,973,293 in total qualified expenditures by productions in Michigan. This represents 228 projects that have been approved to date, including 164 projects that have actually wrapped in the state.

The Michigan Film Office was created in 1979 to assist and attract incoming production companies and promote the growth of Michigan's own film industry. The Film Office also administers the incentive program for film, television and other digital media production in Michigan, as well as infrastructure development and workforce training.

Feb. 16th - Jim Cooper and Friends play Jazz of hte 1920s as part of the Great Michigan Read with the excellent book, Arc of Justice, a Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age by Kevin Boyle.
March 6th - Dan E. Johnson, author of award winning mystery novels, The Detroit Electric Scheme and Motor City Shakedown. I have heard I should put these on my reading list.

Tonight (Feb. 3) on Detroit TV Channel 56, InsideOut Literary Arts Project will be featured in a 20-minute segment.

A Poet in Every Classroom will show Detroit Filmmaker Joel Silvers and Wayne State University film student Eric Daniel as they explore the work of InsideOut Literary Arts Project and its City Wide Poets Program as they teach poetry and self expression to area youth.

The 20-minute segment will begin airing at 9:40 p.m., immediately following the Friday Night Film Festival.

	The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is the newest site to receive the Great Michigan Read traveling exhibit, We Don't Want Them. The exhibit will be displayed at the museum throughout the month of February.
	Yoopera!, a documentary on the Upper Peninsula, the Rockland Opera, and the Storyline Project, has released an official trailer. The documentary, by the International Documentary Association, is made possible through a Michigan Humanities Council major grant. Watch the trailer here!

Scratch The Page: Behind the Story

At IO, we pride ourselves on bringing the best in verse and literary vision to Detroit's youngest writers. One example is Scratch The Page (STP), an annual free workshop/reading series that taps nationally recognized writers to fire up the pens of youth ages 13 to 18. The 2012 STP series continues with noted author and Cave Canem Fellow, Gregory Pardlo (see poem on right) on February 25th at the Virgil H. Carr Center, Detroit. (Click here for full story.)

IO on WTVS

On Sunday, February 12th at 5:40pm, WTVS airs for the second time, "A Poet in Every Classroom," produced as an Undergraduate Research Project through Wayne State's Honors College by WSU instructor Joel Silvers and Department of Film Studies student Erik Daniel. The video tells the story of IO Founder and Executive Director Terry Blackhawk's dream of dispatching poets into classrooms so that "experiencing the power of the written word will become an essential part of every child's education." Special thanks to Rich Homberg, Dave Devereaux and everyone at WTVS for their partnership and support!

Note: Sunday's broadcast of "A Poet in Every Classroom" immediately follows "300 Miles to Freedom," a stirring film about a man who escaped and fought back against slavery. Check it out here.

MCACA Award

InsideOut Literary Arts Project has been awarded a grant of $6,000 from the State of Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA). The grant was awarded through the MCACA peer review process and was one of 233 applications to compete for MCACA fiscal year 2012 funding.

Organizations receiving a MCACA grant award are required to match those funds with other public and private dollars. Local supporters of the project include Charter One and individual contributors. IO also receives significant volunteer support from the community including students from the Wayne State Honors College.

Welcome to 2012!

Like most people, I started the year with plans to improve my health ("release" the extra poundage versus "lose" because I'm not looking to find it again once it's gone), relationships (you know, "make new friends and keep [some] of the old") and finances (wealth, not riches, is my pursuit). Although each of those goals is still prominent in my mind, my focus has shifted.

I declare 2012 as the year that I help 10,000 writers become published authors! Since speaking my intention into the atmosphere, the heavens opened releasing opportunities in abundance. Wait for it...woo hoo!

If you haven't seen the movie Red Tails, you're missing a winner. The movie depicts the challenges of the all-Black flying squadron from World War II. These heroic men - who were defined by many US Air Force officers as incapable of flying or maintaining planes - flew over 1,500 missions and never lost an escorted bomber to enemy fighters. I had the awesome pleasure of sitting in the presence of four Tuskegee Airmen and a Caucasian bomber pilot at Sinclair Community College. They were promoting the movie and the documentary, Double V which portrays their victory against the Germans and racism on home soil.

Seated from left to right was a Red Tails pilot (his nickname is Cast Iron and he was hilarious), an engineer, a mechanic, another Red Tails pilot and a bomber pilot.

Following the viewing of the one-hour documentary, the audience had the opportunity to ask questions, most of which were directed to the Tuskegee Airmen. When the Caucasian bomber pilot was asked how he felt about being escorted by Black pilots, he said, "When the escort plane banked right under my bomber, the pilot waved at me and then took out the enemy. My only thought was 'Thank You, Lord!' Because of their bravery, I'm here today."

This story is more than just Black History. The bravery of these men saved thousands of lives and helped America defeat the enemy. That's American history all day long!

A few years ago, Judge Bill Littlejohn (now retired), brought a group of four authors together to network. Out of that meeting, Soul of the Pen was formed. As we met more authors and expanded our focus, Dayton Authors United was born.

We are honored to welcome Naomi Benaron, winner of the 2011 Bellwether Prize for Fiction, an award established by Barbara Kingsolver to honor fiction that addresses issues of social justice.

Running the Rift follows Jean Patrick Nkuba, a gifted Rwandan boy, from the day he knows that running will be his life to the moment he must run to save his life, a ten-year span in which his country is undone by the Hutu-Tutsi tensions. Born a Tutsi, he is thrust into a world where it's impossible to stay apolitical-where the man who used to sell you gifts for your family now spews hatred, where the girl who flirted with you in the lunchroom refuses to look at you, where your Hutu coach is secretly training the very soldiers who will hunt down your family. Yet in an environment increasingly restrictive for the Tutsi, he holds fast to his dream of becoming Rwanda's first Olympic medal contender in track, a feat he believes might deliver him and his people from this violence. When the killing begins, Jean Patrick is forced to flee, leaving behind the woman, the family, and the country he loves. Finding them again is the race of his life.
