An exciting new addition to any family historian’s library, this guide will take their research to the next level with clear advice and explanation of the processes involved. It provides information about the way in which our ancestors used to live and how this knowledge can help the researcher. Topics include genealogical traditions around the world, from North America to West Africa; the abuse of geneology by the Nazis; and the uses of new science such as DNA testing and new technology such as online research; while a problem-solving section sees experts tackle common difficulties. Up to date with new developments in the subject, this is an essential book for anyone researching their family history.
From graveyard to cemetery, author and certified genealogist Gaylord Cooper explains definitions, symbols and sources beneficial in the study of genealogy, culture and history. Readers of many backgrounds will find this both a useful tool for research and a fascinating read for simple curiosity. Sometimes artfully ornate, sometimes tastefully spare, the meanings of icons used on grave markers are explained in detail. Do’s and Don’ts for cleaning and preserving gravestones are presented. Worksheets, source lists, field guides and other helpful materials are included. This is a book for people searching for ancestors and recording genealogy, as well as for readers who find beauty in the visual symbolism of architectural and memorial monuments. Many photographs.

StoryCorps founder and legendary radio producer Dave Isay selects the most memorable stories from StoryCorps’ collection, creating a moving portrait of American life.

The voices here connect us to real people and their lives – to their experiences of profound joy, sadness, courage, and despair, to good times and hard times, to good deeds and misdeeds. To read this book is to be reminded of how rich and varied the American storybook truly is, how resistant to easy categorization or stereotype. We are our history, individually and collectively, and Listening Is an Act of Love touchingly reminds us of this powerful truth.
The port and railroads were the foundation for this community. In 1900, at two years old, its population was only a little over 1,000. However, by 1906, that number had grown to over 14,000. A wide channel and deepened basin provided for the 36 ships anchored in the harbor. Capt. William T. Hardy’s railroad was complete. Wealthy oilman Capt. Joseph T. Jones had made good on his promises of a train depot, an office building, banks, schools, churches, and stores. The luxurious Great Southern Hotel stood as a star costing over $350,000 to build. Gulfport was a thriving port city. The golfing, hunting, and waterfront activities were an early appeal. Images reflect great fortune and the desperate losses in Gulfport.
