This carving was made from a tree stump which was cut off about 30 feet above the ground. It is located in a playground across the railroad tracks from the Fannin County Courthouse.

The bear is well done. It appears to have been cut basically with a chain saw and then other tools. It appears that it is a work in progress with several of the smaller carvings in the trunk look new.

The kids on the playground have a good time looking at all the things carved in the trunk. Type of wood carving: Chainsaw, grinder, chisel & carving tools

Fannin County was created from Gilmer and Union counties on Jan. 21, 1854 by an act of the General Assembly. The act creating Fannin County authorized the justices of the county's inferior court to select a county seat and provide for construction of a courthouse and other public buildings. Until such action was taken, the act directed that county business and elections take place at Joab Addington's Store. Fannin County's first courthouse, a small wooden structure, was built in Morgantown. Little is known about when, except that it reportedly burned down. In 1895, the county seat was moved to the town of Blue Ridge, where a two-story brick courthouse was built in 1895-96. The courthouse burned in 1936, and a new courthouse was completed the following year funded by the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works.

Georgia's 107th county was named for Col. James Fannin (1804-1836), a Georgian who fought in the War for Texas Independence and was killed at Goliad.

Description of Memorial:
This memorial is located in the City Park in downtown Blue Ridge. The park was dedicated to Colonel Mike McKinney in 1987. He was an early Fannin County settler and founder of Blue Ridge. He was instrumental in securing the right-of-way and bringing the L and N Railroad through this area. There is a plaque in the park as well with this information. The park covers 2 blocks and has a gazebo, playground and is a popular place for picnics and city events.

BY CYNTHIA MAUDE, STAFF WRITER Friday, March 30, 2007 9:18 AM CDT The Mineral Bluff Depot, built in 1887, has been entered into the National Register of Historic Places, making it the fourth historic building in Fannin County to be so designated.

The news that the U. S. Department of Interior had approved the depot’s historic designation came the middle of this month, after being in the works for two years, said John Nichols, who with Elma Ettman, did the application on behalf of the Fannin County Board of Commissioners.

The brick depot was built by the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad, a line that has since been abandoned. It is the only surviving Marietta and North Georgia Railroad depot in Georgia. Other existing depots along the line, like Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Jasper and Tate, were built later by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad.

The Mineral Bluff Depot was deemed worthy of a place on the National Register because of the historical significance of its construction and its commercial and social value to the community, said Nichols.

“At 120 years old, the Mineral Bluff Depot is the oldest public building and one of the oldest structures in Fannin County,” Nichols said. It joins three buildings in downtown Blue Ridge already on the National Register of Historic Places - the old Fannin County Courthouse, now home to the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association, the Baugh House at 411 W. Main St., and the Blue Ridge Depot at 241 Depot St.

The Mineral Bluff Depot was built by Nichols’ great-grandfather, Robert Lee Baugh, and his father, John W. Baugh, originally a brick mason, who went on to manufacture Baugh brick.

John W. Baugh also built the Baugh House, the old Fannin County Tobacco Co. and the smelters and furnaces at the copper mining operation in Ducktown, Nichols said.

The Mineral Bluff Depot features walls that are three to four bricks thick, windows framed by brick arches, and no steel framing, he said.

“For almost 75 years, the Mineral Bluff Depot had passenger train service, and for 85 years, it had a freight agent. Freight was shipped here until 1990. The last freight they shipped was slate rock for Zyrian Stone Co. of Miami,” Nichols said.

The renovation of the Mineral Bluff Depot, which has been under way for the past several years, is “95 percent through,” he said. The hope is to turn the building - which is owned by the state of Georgia and leased to the Fannin County Commissioners - over to the Tri-State Model Railroad Association within the next 30 to 90 days, Nichols said.

A bronze plaque calling attention to the fact that the Mineral Bluff Depot is on the National Register of Historic Places will be placed on the outside of the building, he said.

National Register of Historic Places - Blue Ridge Train Depot

The train route consists of a 26-mile round trip through historic Murphy Junction along the beautiful Toccoa River. This railroad was built over 100 years ago and is the only mainline railroad excursion service based in Georgia.

Each trip begins at the depot in Blue Ridge, Georgia and includes a stop in McCaysville which permits passengers to disembark and stretch their legs while exploring the downtown communities of McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee. Each round trip takes approximately 4 hours.

The last passenger train to operate over this line was a one-time special trip that ran in the 1960’s. The route was originally built as the narrow-gauge Marietta & North Georgia Railroad. Construction began in Marietta in 1877 and reached Blue Ridge in 1886.

HISTORY
The original main line was built to Murphy, North Carolina, which was reached in late 1886. The builders intended to continue until they reached Knoxville, Tennessee, but in 1887, the plans were changed as Knoxville and Blue Ridge were ultimately connected via a slightly different but much more exciting route via the Hiawassee River gorge.

At Talking Rock, Georgia, the line originally made an unusual 180-degree change in direction through a very sharp horseshoe-shaped curve dubbed “the hook” by train crews. The curve was so sharp that crews claimed that if the conductor’s cigar went out in the caboose, he had only to wait until the train got to the “hook”, because he could merely lean out and get a light from the engineer.

Railroads played a significant role in the development of this area between the 1800’s and the early 1900’s, in that they determined the routes of local roads, saved an ailing mining industry, contributed to the growth of small towns as resort communities, and made it possible to log the last remaining virgin timber in the area.

In 1896, the Marietta & North Georgia Railroad was purchased and renamed the Atlanta, Knoxville & Northern, and in 1902 was sold yet again, taking on the new owner’s name, the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, in 1905. Name changes came fast and furious after the 1960’s; “Family Lines”, “Seaboard System”, and finally “CSX” in the 1980’s. But by this time, passenger service had long since been terminated, with the line continuing on as a freight carrier.

In 1990, the line was put up for sale, and a group of local investors stepped in to preserve rail service into north Georgia. As a result, passenger trains are operating once again into the beautiful north Georgia mountains. Since excursion service began operating in 1998, the train has been staffed with dedicated volunteer Car Hosts from all over the surrounding area. Each host is required to attend training classes before serving. Some of our hosts spend the weekend in the mountains and others sign up on a per-trip basis.

Long Description:
Baugh House, located at 411 West First Street, is owned by the Fannin County Heritage Foundation. It is open to the public on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 3:00. The home was built by James Baugh in 1890. Baugh was a brick mason and the bricks were made out of clay from the back yard.
