When You Don't Understand

In human relationships there is often conflict simply because we don’t understand one another. She acts on what she thought he said; he’s frustrated because she didn’t take the time to understand him. If a relationship with Christ is real, then there will be conflict. Sometimes there is conflict not because we disagree with Jesus, but because we don’t understand him. The most powerful relational tool is the skill of listening – and it can help us in our relationship with Jesus as well. Let’s carefully “listen” to his teachings and not assume he’s saying something he’s not.

When Mama Ain't Happy...

What better day to talk about conflict than… Mother’s Day! (ahem…) Even the most loving mother will have conflict with her child. Where there is a relationship, there will be conflict. This year we’re talking about having an actual relationship with Jesus. So what does that look like? What are we supposed to do when we misunderstand him or we disagree with him? It is the same in our relationship with God as it is in our relationships with each other: it’s not IF we will have conflict, it’s HOW we have conflict.

Calming Storms

Jesus preformed many miracles that bent the laws of the nature, which spoke to the depth of his authority and control over this world. But when the twelve saw him calm the winds and the waves during a storm that terrified even the experienced seamen, they were left baffled. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. But Jesus’ only response to their fear was rebuke: Have faith, don’t be afraid. Ever been completely terrified? Warranted or not, fear has a way of seeping into our heads and hearts. And yet Jesus’ response is “I got this.” When we understand the depth of God’s control in this world and in our lives, we realize there is not place for fear, only faith.

Dead or Alive?

Raising Lazarus from the dead is one of the most famous miracles of Jesus. We know it was famous when it happened because it was the miracle to end all miracles. It stirred up so much controversy that it was the last miracle Jesus performed. It’s famous today because it, and the resurrection of Jesus, are the most difficult stories in the New Testament to explain. As we’ve seen through “Stage 3” of our “2012 AD” journey, if our experience with Jesus is limited to what we can explain, then we will miss out on a great deal. Jesus says he’s the resurrection and the life – and that whoever believes in him will live. This story is about life, not death. It’s about experiencing fullness in every area of life. It brings us to a very probing question: in each area of our lives, are we dead or alive?

Healing

We are all fully aware when we are in need of physical healing. We know when the healing is needed – and we know when it arrives. But spiritual healing is a little more tricky to identify. In the story of Jesus healing the paralytic, he first forgives the man of his sins. Then Jesus clarifies that spiritual healing is a bigger deal than physical healing. This man’s healing, however, required the efforts of his friends who lowered him through the roof to Jesus. If you seek healing, surround yourself with people who want to help you get closer to Jesus.

This Changes Everything!

Every once in awhile there are moments in life that change everything. The disciples loved Jesus, respected him and were committed to him. But the stories leading up to Easter Sunday reveal they weren’t quite ready to lay down their lives for him. When Jesus rose from grave and appeared before them in the upper room... this changed everything! As we celebrate Easter, we are shifting into a celebration of the supernatural. We are entering Phase III of our year-long journey and it’s called “Wonder.” There are unexplainable things in this world (such as the resurrection). Would you prefer to explain these things or be transformed by them?

Teacher Yet Servant

For the twelve disciples, the week before Jesus died was an emotional roller coaster. They were elated with their arrival into Jerusalem; they were thankful for the intimacy they experienced with Jesus that week; and they were puzzled by Jesus’ attempts to explain what was about to happen. The most shocking moment for Peter was when Jesus interrupted his meal, picked up a towel and bent down to wash Peter’s disgusting feet. We typically look at this story as a reminder for us to be servants and wash one another’s feet – and that certainly is part of Jesus’ challenge in this story. But Peter struggled with the idea of Jesus washing his (italics) feet. What does it mean for us to be one of the twelve and allow Jesus to wash our feet?

Natural Yet Intentional

Human relationships develop both naturally and intentionally. Sometimes we become close with someone and we don’t even know how we got there. Other times we know exactly what we did to develop the relationship. It’s the same thing in our relationship with Jesus. He invites us to communicate with him through prayer in ways that are natural. We can just be ourselves; we can be honest and authentic. But Jesus also gives us unique direction in terms of prayer… he says, “this is how you should pray…” He clearly instructs us how to be intentional in terms of connecting deeply with him through prayer.

Simple Yet Mysterious

It’s wonderful to imagine being one of the twelve – to imagine sitting with, listening to and watching Jesus. But what do we do when we have a real question? When we need a specific answer in a complex situation? Sometimes Jesus is simple. He is God in the form of a person. He loves all and he loves perfectly. But other times... Jesus is mysterious. He says and does things we would not expect. His influence and presence can be disturbing and unsettling. The beauty is that Jesus is both. He is simple when we are making things too complex and he is mysterious when we begin to keep him too small. He knows the perfect buttons to push. He is the perfect fit.

Truthful Yet Graceful

The truth is a powerful thing. The Bible spends a great deal of time saying just that. Jesus, Himself, came into this world "full of grace and truth." Yet, it seems that the truth is a difficult thing to confront. We often hide from the truth, disguise the truth, run from it, manage it, or just flat out lie. It's funny that, in scripture, truth is linked to two other words: grace and love. How can the truth be so scary if grace and love are its friends?

Poor Yet Extravagant

When Jesus is around you don’t have to worry about things getting boring. At the wedding in Cana, his mother told the servants to listen to Jesus and do whatever he says. She must have known what he was capable of. They did… the water turned into wine and the party kept going. The provision of Jesus goes beyond sustenance and into extravagance. Jesus was poor so his extravagance went beyond generosity in terms of finances. He loves us extravagantly and has given us the greatest gift of all… himself. In response, we can love other extravagantly. We can love beyond “fairness” and beyond what others deserve. We can love extravagantly because he first loved us… extravagantly.

Powerful Yet Playful

There is little debate as to whether or not Jesus was powerful. Even if you set aside the miraculous and supernatural, he was the most influential person who has ever lived. But how do you feel about him being playful? Most paintings of him are serious. Most often when we read his words we assume a serious tone. But could he have been playful? We’ve been made in the image of God and we’ve been blessed with the ability to laugh – to bend over in hysterics, holding our bladder so we don’t wet ourselves. Could this be a gift from God? Could this be part of the personality of Jesus? Sometimes all we can do is laugh. Sometimes we just gotta laugh.

Hopeful Yet Challenging

In our “2012 AD” journey, we are imagining we are one of the twelve – entering into a real relationship with Jesus. This second section (Discover) is comparable to the process of dating. We’re basically sitting down with Jesus and saying, “Tell me about yourself...” After he selected his twelve disciples, the first thing Jesus said to them was words of encouragement known as The Beatitudes. He’s saying that those who are humble will be blessed. He then challenges people to even higher standards (Matthew 5) and challenges those who seek attention for their acts of spirituality (Matthew 6). Basically, Jesus is saying, “I connect with the humble, not the proud. I will give hope to the humble and challenge the proud.”

Pleasure and Duty

It’s decision time. Will you commit to being “one of the twelve” this year? An authentic and healthy relationship with someone involves both “pleasure” and “duty”. We enjoy pleasure so the relationship is not robotic or strictly practical. We embrace duty so that we are committed through difficult times. Both of these are essential to an authentic relationship with Jesus as well. Are you ready to commit to the pleasure and duty of such a relationship? Are you ready to drop your net and follow Jesus?

Are You the One?

John the Baptist knew that it was his role to “prepare the way for the Lord” and he did his job with great passion. But then he was surprised to find himself in prison – and even more surprised that this powerful Christ was not setting him free. So he asked a very honest question of Jesus: “Are you the one?” The life of a follower of Jesus is not perfect. Our theology is not bulletproof. How can we know with certainty that Jesus is the one we are to follow? What if we have misunderstood this whole thing? How do we know that Jesus is the answer? Do we even know what the question is?

What Did They Have Access To?

Last week we considered what it would have been like to be one of the twelve disciples that Jesus invited to follow him. They were all Jewish. They had access to the stories of the struggles of their people. They had access to the scriptures that spoke of a coming Messiah. And they had access to the reality of being ruled by Rome. Here in 2012, our own history as a nation and as individuals greatly shapes our response to the invitation to follow him. What we have access to greatly shapes the condition of our hearts. What is the condition of your heart as you’re faced with the DECISION to follow Jesus?

One of the Twelve

Spiritual growth is often referred to as “discipleship”. We grow as we are “discipled” by Jesus – which means we follow him. We will begin “The Year of Our Lord” by encountering Jesus from the perspective of his disciples. What would it be like if we were one of the twelve? We may be familiar with the stories of how the twelve were chosen, but let us not miss the miracle – Jesus invited a team of twelve to do life with him and to change the world with him! The plan this year is not to learn more about Jesus – it’s to be with him.

Leave the Weeds

In Matthew 13 Jesus tells a story about a farmer who planted wheat only to see it infected by an enemy planting weeds. Interestingly, the weeds looked so much like the wheat that it was difficult to tell them apart until it was too late. Obviously the weeds needed to be pulled so the workers went to the farmer requesting his permission. But the farmers surprising response was to leave the weeds. This message is about why God allows weeds to stick around in our lives and how to overcome.

The Part of Herod the Great

He will always be remembered for the buildings, monuments and temples he built as King of Judea – but he was also “great”ly disturbed. We like great. We hope for a great and extraordinary Christmas. But the most powerful parts of the Christmas story are small: a young virgin girl, a simple shepherd, a baby boy. What if our pursuit of the great stuff causes us to miss the small stuff? What if the Christmas story is more about the small stuff?

There's Something About Mary

Most of us think of Mary as a meek woman of great humility. That persona is merited by the account of Jesus' birth in Luke 1. Whereas Zachariah responds to the angel with doubt, Mary believes. Zachariah sought confirmation; Mary sought information. With great humility she wanted to know why such an amazing thing would happen to a simple girl like her. The powerful thing was that her humility was matched with her confidence. She knew she was highly favored and that she would be remembered for generations - but she also knew where this favor was coming from and that she must remain humble. The combination of confidence and humility forms a character that can be used mightily in God's story.

The Bride

The final character in our Whole Shebang journey is “The Bride.” The bride is not a person, a city or a concept. She is a group of people willfully connected to Christ as the groom. She is the church. She is us. The picture John paints in Revelation 21 is the ultimate goal of the church – it’s the ultimate goal of our character development. The bride is satisfied (v6)... she is no longer thirsty, no longer longing to be content. The bride is safe (v12-13)... we must live dangerously in our Christian journey because safety is not yet attainable in this broken world. The bride is stable (v14)... in the end we will no longer feel unsettled or temporary.

The White Rider

Some characters in Revelation can be hard to identify with great certainty. However, there is no mistaking who The White Rider represents. In Revelation 19 we get a picture of Jesus like the world had never seen before. Many believed Jesus to be only a marginalized peasant from Galilee, which he in fact was... but keep reading into the book of Acts and follow it up with Revelation and you will find that while Jesus’ humble incarnation gives us an example of how to live, his glorious exaltation defines him once and for all as our champion, our warrior, our great leader.

The Woman on the Beast

Readers of the book of Revelation would be wise to study the book with humility. Many brilliant scholars have landed in different places regarding the meaning and interpretation of symbols and characters in Revelation. We must be extra careful in assuming John was referring to events in our time. We are better off to ask the question, “What did this mean for its intended audience?” In chapters 17 and 18 John is referring to an earthly power that seems limitless to his audience. The “woman on the beast” is likely referring to Rome. For us, “Rome” is the most powerful thing we could possibly imagine – other than God. Eventually, the untouchable Rome… fell. Whatever your “Rome” is… it too will fall. When this happens, how will you respond?

The Dragon

We now shift to the seventh and final section of the Whole Shebang journey. The book of Revelation gives us some colorful yet meaningful images of what “The End” of the story is going to look like. The main character in chapter 12 is the dragon – which represents Satan, the adversary and third main character in the overall story. We are reminded that he will ultimately be defeated (good news) but that he continues to have infl uence and power (bad news). Often, his strategy is a 1-2 punch. He deceives us into believing a lie that leads us to sin or fear. Then he accuses us when we respond poorly. We are wise to be aware of the enemy’s tactics and to counter them with the hope and grace of Christ.

Author of Life

Most of us can relate to Neo from the Matrix – we don’t like the idea that we’re not in control of our lives. We have the privilege of choosing to be part of God’s overall narrative. We are writing our unwritten story. What power! What an opportunity! But… what if we handed the pen over to God? A follower of Christ is invited to live a spirit-filled life. This means that the Holy Spirit is with us. He is whispering in our conscience; He is directing us toward our life quest; He is molding our character. What if we handed the pen over to Him?

Staying In Character

Most of our favorite characters in stories are not perfect. It is their flaws that make them real. As we develop our characters and strive for our quest in our Unwritten stories, it’s important to remember we’re real – that it’s ok to have flaws. “Staying In Character” means that we don’t have to pretend we’re something we’re not. We can be open and honest about the “bad” parts of our character while we celebrate the good parts. You are not all bad… and you are not all good! Don’t be ashamed of your imperfections. Some of them need to be worked on. And some of them are just… you. Stay the course. Stay real. Stay in character.

Overcoming Obstacles

The best stories and movies leave us with a sense of inspiration and awe because of the obstacles the main character has overcome. The greater the challenges conquered, the better the story. However, in our own life we often hope for few obstacles and look for the path of least resistance. We think that a loving God would not allow the pain of illness, debt, addiction, or loss. But our ways are not God’s ways; our thoughts are not his thoughts. If we choose to face obstacles by clinging to God and to each other, those challenges can be a catalyst for transformation in our story.

Character Arc

A character is no more or less than what he or she wants. As we live out our unwritten story – our role in the Whole Shebang – we need to know where we’re headed. We need to know what our Character Quest is. In a story, the Character Arc is the pathway for a character to get from point A to point B – to get from where he or she is to the desired quest. The arc is the “how.” We can make great efforts on the outside, but long-term change doesn’t happen until we are transformed on the inside. Our beliefs impact our actions and decisions. Our beliefs form our story.

Character Quest

As we live out our “Unwritten” portion of God’s story, it’s important to remember that we’re heading somewhere. There is a goal – there is an end game. Noah was given a unique quest to build a 500-foot boat. He was ridiculed by those around him and needed confidence that this was his God-given quest. Most of us are aware of the importance of purpose, but the frustration comes in identifying “my” unique quest. It’s the classic question: should I stay in Phoenix with my current job or move to Arkansas and raise llamas? What is my purpose? If I knew what God wanted me to do I’d do it! Today we’re not just going to remind you of the importance of a quest – we’re giving you one! Your character quest is to ______ ______ ______ ______ ______.

Character Chart

When writers develop fictional characters, they often use a “character chart” to help write backstory for the people they’re creating. Backstory is more than just a history. It describes a person’s character traits, personality, habits and greatest potential downfall—often referred to as their Fatal Flaw. With God, no flaw or failure need be fatal to our character. That’s good news for the past. As for the future, the more familiar we become with our own backstory, the more prepared we’ll be to make wise decisions when faced with challenging circumstances.

Character Development

The “Unwritten” part of the Whole Shebang is our story. The grand story of God is still being written – and we get to be part of it. In the next seven weeks we will shift from looking at a character in the story – to looking at our character. The writer of any great story must develop great characters. If we want our story to be great, we must invest in the development of our character. In the upcoming weeks we’ll talk about how to do that. In this message we want to clarify why. Why should we even care about character development?

We Still Remember

All who were old enough in 2001 will never forget where they were on that unforgettable morning of September 11th. We still remember the heroes of that day for their willingness to risk their lives to help strangers. This stirs our hearts because it is a Kingdom principle - it is something hard-wired into humanity by our Creator. Jesus answers "Who is my neighbor" by telling the story of the good Samaritan. He says that the neighbor is the one who shows mercy to the stranger in need. What happened on September 11th... is "they" became "us".

C. S. Lewis: Lighten Up!

C. S. Lewis was a professor at both Oxford and Cambridge – and he was a brilliant scholar of Medieval Literature. He sounds like he’d be a blast at a party, doesn’t he? But he is most known for a series of children’s books entitled “The Chronicles of Narnia.” Lewis had the intellectual horsepower and opportunity to be stiff, heavy and unimaginative. Instead, he modeled a powerful character issue for those who follow Christ: he did not take himself too seriously. Yes, life is very hard. But it is God’s desire that we experience pleasure during our years in this broken world. It is a sign of character strength (not weakness) when we learn to embrace the things God has meant for our enjoyment.

Student Volunteer Movement: The Global Story

We’re now taking a giant leap from the 6th to the 19th century. We’re skipping over the Dark Ages (500-1500) because there were few characters to celebrate during that period. The Protestant Reformation of the 16th century provided us with numerous amazing characters – some of which were celebrated during Whole Shebang Part I. The “character” this week is actually not a person. We’re looking at the character of a group of students who gathered at Mt. Hermon in 1886 and eventually became known as the Student Volunteer Movement. This movement radically embraced God’s desire to reach all nations. An essential theme throughout the Whole Shebang is that God’s pursuit of a restored relationship with humanity is a global story. We are blessed to be a blessing; we are to be fishers of men. Any person wishing to be molded by the character of Christ must consider The Global Story.

Benedict: Commitment

Being a “Christian” involves more than making a decision to follow Christ. It’s referred to as a relationship because it is ongoing. If you see yourself as a “follower of Christ” and you are making no efforts to develop that relationship... that’s a character issue. Any healthy relationship requires an ongoing commitment. In the 6th century, Benedict left the success and the trappings of this world to prioritize his intimacy with God. He influenced many and eventually became the overseer of 12 monasteries full of highly committed followers of Jesus. He has influenced western monasteries more than any other person and he is a great example of passionate commitment to intimacy with Christ.

St. Patrick: Beyond Forgiveness

St. Patrick is not a leprechaun. There’s no evidence that he wore green, drank beer or was a particularly lucky person. He was a part of God’s story – a significant part to the people of Ireland. He was taken from his homeland in Britain and became a slave in Ireland. After escaping, he not only forgave his captors but felt called by God to take the message of Jesus to them. As we continue to look at a few characters in the history of “The Church,” St. Patrick stands out as a model of forgiveness and going beyond forgiveness.

Augustine: Confession

“The Church” is a look back at the 2,000 years since Christ walked the earth – 2,000 years of thought, debate and characters that have dramatically molded our experience with God today. One of the earliest and most influential of these characters is a guy named Augustine from the 4th century. His writings and sermons have had a tremendous impact on our understanding of sin and our need for grace. One of his most influential books was entitled Confessions where he models for us the need to verbally express our remorse for our thoughts and actions. True freedom requires us, through confession, to acknowledge what Christ came to free us from.

Grilling Up Some Wisdom

Proverbs is a very practical book about wisdom in the OT and focuses on two areas: integrity and people (relationships). We need to be intentional about seeking wisdom. It just doesn't happen naturally. When God grills up some wisdom, its often served through the gift of community, which is lived out in a number of ministries from which we will hear 5 stories on how God is moving in people's lives here at MPCC.

Our parents, teachers, bosses, church, TV, Oprah: so many different voices telling us how to find heaven on earth. Yes, we believe in Jesus but we count on him more to save us from Hell after earth. But when the Gospel collides with our lives we come face to face with the reality that belief in Jesus here and now is what brings ultimate and complete joy. No matter what functional heavens the world or religion promise us, it's Jesus alone that can deliver true life abundantly.

Timothy: A Man of Integrity

The apostle Paul loved young Timothy and seemed to trust him more than anyone else. Evidence suggests that this was because Timothy was a man of integrity. To have integrity means to be integrated. It means that every part of your life fits together. It means you are the same person at work and at home – you’re the same person when people are watching and when they’re not. Being a person of integrity doesn’t mean you’re perfect in all areas – it just means you’re honest about all areas. In Paul’s letter to Timothy, he challenges the church to set the bar high – to set an example for those who may be watching – to have great integrity.

Peter: Assigned Not Deserved

As we celebrate Father’s Day, it seems appropriate to look at the character of the apostle Peter… because he was a man’s man! He was the only one brave enough to step out of the boat and walk on water. In his passion to protect Jesus, he cut the ear off the advancing soldier. He was vigorous, impulsive, hot-tempered and confident (queue Tim Allen grunt…). But in the letters in the New Testament that bear his name, we see a man whose character had been shaped and carved by the God he served. Peter learned to blend his passion with humility and respect for others. He learned that respect is not supposed to be deserved – it is to be assigned.

James: Everybody Wants to Be Heard

We don’t know much about James. We know he was a brother of Jesus and that he wrote a very terse and impactful book in the New Testament that is titled by his name. His style of writing is consistent with his command for us to be “quick to listen and slow to speak.” Naturally, we are very much the opposite. And James offers a strong challenge to our character. If everyone wants to be heard, then who is going to listen to them? James challenges followers of Christ to be the ones who listen first, and speak second. The most impactful way we can do this is to prove that we both listened and understood.

Paul: Feelin' Groovy

We now move into the section entitled “The Revolution.” This comes from the story and letters found in the second half of the New Testament. After Jesus died, rose and ascended into heaven, his young, terrified followers had to decide what to do next. They were given the task of continuing the revolution of love that Jesus started. One of the main revolutionaries was the apostle Paul. He modeled the character trait of contentment (among many other character strengths). He wrote, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.” This week we will explain whether or not this is the same as the 1960’s notion of “Feelin’ Groovy”!

The Messiah: Obedience. Are You Convinced?

No key on a piano is the “wrong” key. But when played outside of the “obedient” how, when, and where, it becomes a bunch of noise. When we are asked to be obedient, the question that nags under the surface is: how much is this going to cost? The night before Jesus dies, he prays an amazingly difficult prayer: “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42) Jesus pays the ultimate cost of obedience through death and taking on the wrath of God. Somehow we are expected to live with the same kind of willingness to pursue God’s will. This depth of obedience was only possible because Jesus was convinced of and in deep relationship with the person of God. It is when we are convinced of and in deep relationship with God, that our life can change from a banging noise of a piano to a beautiful song.

The Messiah: The Grace of Giving

Jesus was the greatest teacher ever... and he had a lot to say about money. He certainly challenges and inspires us toward generosity. But have you ever wondered if he, himself, was generous? He was poor and had no money to give away! The apostle Paul, however, describes the generosity of Jesus very clearly. He says that followers of Christ should “excel in the grace of giving.” The issue is not just how much we give – it’s how we give. It’s giving cheerfully, hopefully, compassionately – because that’s what money is for.

He knew where he was going. It is a sign of maturity when we have a plan for our lives. The Messiah: Catch & Release

Our celebration of Mother’s Day is a focus on a more feminine character trait of Jesus – namely, compassion. The story of Jesus feeding the 5000 demonstrates that we show compassion for others by remembering to “catch and release”. We “catch” those to whom we want to show compassion by entering into their struggle. Compassion literally means to “suffer with.” We feel their pain, we hold them in their time of need, we nurture, we love. But we are also to “release” them. We don’t serve others by continuing to coddle them. We are to equip them and release them to be strong and make good decisions.

The Messiah: A Dangerous Man to Follow

Through his three years of ministry, as recorded in the gospels, Jesus modeled for us the perfection of “character.” In this section of “The Whole Shebang,” instead of looking at five different characters, we are going to look at five powerful character traits of Jesus. This week we will focus on his boldness. Entering Jerusalem on a donkey was a very courageous thing to do. He was declaring, “I am the Messiah! I am the King of the world!” Make no mistake, he was a very dangerous man – otherwise they would not have killed him. If we choose to follow him and model our lives after him, we too need to live life with boldness.

Esther: Affected by Hurt

As we walk through life we can choose to change our posture from being guarded against, to being affected by some hurts and miseries around us. It is a risk that can end in the beauty of God’s Kingdom brought to Earth. As Esther’s Uncle Mordecai reminds her, perhaps you have come to this place in your life to do something about the very thing that affects you.

Daniel: Are You Willing to "Go There"?

Daniel is our last major prophet addressing the exile of God’s people out of Jerusalem. Daniel served under three different kings while he was in exile in Babylonia. Sometimes we’re confronted with dangerous conversations. When it’s the right thing to do, are we willing to “go there”? Or do we skip over the opportunities provided for us by God?

Ezekiel: Words of Encouragement

The tone of Ezekiel changes from chapter 24 to 25. In the first 24 chapters he joins Jeremiah in warning the Israelites that if they don’t change they will get kicked out of Jerusalem. Then in the second half of the book he offers words of encouragement to them. We are like the Israelites in that we also need both. We need to be challenged towards change - this is the way God shapes and molds our character. But we also need encouragement to inspire us through the difficult task of change.

Through scripture, conscience, and community, God warns and warns us toward making good and wise decisions in life. The overall message God is giving to those in exile is: there is hope!

Like the man in Mark 2, we all come to Jesus on a stretcher. We are beat up and knocked down. We may go through life consoling ourselves with thoughts of "I'm a good person," or "I can get through this on my own," but in reality all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory and are laid out on a stretcher. We celebrate the lives of those who have realized their need their baptism. They make the statement that Jesus is not a crutch, but he is the stretcher that takes us through life.
