Sofia Vergara tops the highest paid TV personality 2012

2012-07-19T23:42:00.004+06:00

Saturday Night Live host Colombian actress, comedian and model Sofia Vergara tops the list of the highest earning woman on television, according to estimates calculated by Forbes magazine. Vergara made $19 million over the past year, with $7 million coming from her hit show "Modern Family" and $12 million from endorsement deals.

Forbes calls Vergara the biggest Hispanic crossover star since Desi Arnaz, and says companies who want to reach the $1 trillion Hispanic market are clamoring for Vergara. KMart alone is paying her $7 million for her eponymous clothing line. "The truth is out that we're in this country and we're taking over," Sofia told Forbes.

"To see people paying attention to the cultural changes ... is fantastic." Vergara, 40, was born into a Colombian farming family. In addition to her personal earnings, the media company she founded in 1996, LatinWE, earned $27 million in revenues in 2011, its best year ever. Kim Kardashian came in second on the Forbes list at $18 million, and another Latina actress, Eva Longoria, came in third.

Penelope Cruz with Oscar

Pirates of the Caribbean star Penelope Cruz is selected EIF(Entertainment Industry Foundation) ambassador for Saks Fifth Avenue's Key To Cure Campaign. Saks Fifth Avenue and the entertainment industry announce the selection on july 12.

In the 14 years since the inception of the Saks Fifth Avenue charity shopping weekend, the company, together with its vendors and partners, has raised $31 million for cancer research.

Celebrated designer Carolina Herrera created a limited-edition T-shirt exclusively to benefit Key To The Cure that will retail for $35 at Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH stores and on saks.com. One hundred percent of the proceeds from each shirt sold will be donated to EIF's Women's Cancer Research Fund, benefiting charitable programs dedicated to finding new detection methods, better treatments and eventual cures for women's cancers.

The T-shirt debuts at Saks Fifth Avenue on October 1st.

"I am honored to join the Entertainment Industry Foundation's Women's Cancer Research Fund and Saks Fifth Avenue to raise awareness for women's cancers. By purchasing this year's SAKS FIFTH AVENUE KEY TO THE CURE t-shirt, designed by Carolina Herrera, you can help continue the innovative research already in progress. Cancer has affected each and every one of us in one way or another and I am thrilled to be involved with this wonderful cause,” says Penelope Cruz.

Steve Sadove, Chairman and CEO, Saks Fifth Avenue, said, “Partnering with Carolina Herrera, EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund, and Penelope Cruz—and having the continued support of various charities throughout the country, as well as the support of our clients, vendors and Associates—is a testament to Key To The Cure’s legacy in uniting our communities to raise critical funds for awareness about this cause year after year.”

Carolina Herrera states, "It is a pleasure and honor to partner with Saks on the Key to the Cure project this year. It's wonderful to see both fashion and philanthropy brought together to serve a greater purpose. The design of the t-shirt had to be both meaningful and pleasing to the eye and I think we've accomplished just that."

Ms. Cruz will appear in a national public service announcement (PSA) wearing the Carolina Herrera limited-edition T-shirt. The Key To The Cure PSA will appear in major fashion and lifestyle magazines in September and October.

Saks Fifth Avenue’s charity shopping weekend will take place Thursday through Sunday, October 18 to 21, at all Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH stores nationwide and on saks.com.

Saks Fifth Avenue initiated its charity shopping weekend in 1999. Since then, the company has donated $31 million to women’s cancer research and treatment organizations throughout the United States. Organizations benefiting from these funds include: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation; EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund; Cleveland Clinic; Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; Nevada Cancer Institute and many others.

With the success of the February Charity Program, in which Saks customers gave 5% of all registered purchases made with a registered Saks Fifth Avenue credit card back to charity, Saks Fifth Avenue is bringing its charitable initiatives under one banner for the first time. A new Saks Gives logo will highlight Saks Fifth Avenue’s dedication to charity. Saks Gives will brand the company’s charitable service through philanthropic giving and active outreach, both locally and nationally.

Taylor Swift responded to the appeal to be a cancer victims prom: nice to see Swift

Taylor Swift

Numerous crazy fans want to go on a date with Taylor Swift. So, what makes 18-year-old Kevin McGuire from Somerdale, New Jersey any different from the pack of Swift's would-be suitors?

Well, there are a few things, which I'll go over in a minute. But, suffice to say, McGuire, who recently asked Swift via Facebook to be his prom date in June, stands out for the response he got. Swift declined the offer...but asked him to accompany her to a prestigious awards show in April, instead!

How did this all happen? The backstory: McGuire has had a painful struggle with leukemia since he was 13 years old. He went into remission in 2010, but sadly relapsed and is currently battling cancer for a second time.

His older sister, Victoria, impressed with her brother's bravery and character, started a Facebook campaign with the hope of granting his greatest wish--convincing Swift to attend prom with him.

"All throughout Kevin's treatment he kept his character intact, remained playing basketball, and even started varsity football as a freshman," Victoria McGuire explained on Facebook. "Kevin is the kindest, most noble 18-year-old a person could even fathom meeting, and through out his ups and downs Kevin never even questioned 'why me?'

"Nothing, and I mean NOTHING brightens Kevin's day more than Taylor Swift," she continued. "Kevin DESERVES more than anyone a special event in his life."

Victoria's idea caught the attention of local news, who interviewed her about it. "[Kevin] said 'who would want to go to the prom with me? I am going to be bald, my appearance is going to change,'" she told an NBC affiliate. "We both looked at each other and I said, 'What if I got Taylor Swift to go to the prom with you?'"

After the campaign attracted responses from nearly 90,000 people, Swift herself responded to McGuire's sister's plea on her own Facebook account Friday afternoon. She politely declined his offer to go to prom, but asked, "I was wondering, the ACM Awards are coming up.. Would you be my date?"

The startled teenager told local news after reading the post in a bed at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia that he didn't know what to say. "I was just trying not to throw up." (He recovered enough composure to accept the invitation, provided he's feeling well enough when the date arrives.) The Academy of Country Music Awards will take place April 1 in Las Vegas. Kevin, you're not old enough to gamble yet, but you're already a big winner.

Gwyneth Paltrow talked on racial diversity and the Black community

2011-12-02T17:34:00.002+06:00

'Shakespeare in Love' star Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken out again about her cutting-edge coming of age experiences, specifically being at the forefront of the reform of race relations in America. Paltrow’s ability to annoy and irritate by being simultaneously unaware of her privilege while condescending every other person in the rest of America is so prolific, and her recent comments about her dad’s work on an 80′s TV show as a testament to her being down-ness is so tone deaf it’s almost offensive.

In an interview that's sure to have her many haters foaming at the mouth, outspoken actress Gwyneth Paltrow sat down with noted author/music executive Steve Stoute for his AOL Huff Post series, The Tanning Effect, and cleared her view on racial diversity and the Black community. Why Upper East Sider GP is an authority on topics such as Black hair, diversity on magazine covers and representations of Black people in the media seems limited to the fact that her father, Bruce Paltrow, created a groundbreaking television show (The White Shadow, about a white guy who teaches basketball to inner-city kids) and her friendship with her besties, Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Nevertheless, here's some of what she had to say:

Army veteran J.R. Martinez Wins the ABC's season 13 "Dancing With The Star"

2011-11-23T15:36:00.000+06:00

After an emotional - and at times controversial -- season, army veteran and former "All My Children" actor J.R. Martinez came out the best among 11 celebrities to become the newest ballroom champion, alongside his partner and first-time mirrorball champ, professional dancer Karina Smirnoff.

In this way J.R. Martinez ended a storybook chapter to ABC's 'Dancing with the Stars' by hoisting the show's mirrorball trophy in victory following the finale on November 23.

Martinez, an Army veteran who often joked in the beginning of the season about how much of an unknown he was on the celebrity dance competition, went on to inspire millions of viewers with his story of recovery from a 2003 landmine explosion in Iraq.

During the show's two-day finals, Martinez, 28, and pro partner Karina Smirnoff, 33, also impressed enough with their fancy footwork to win the 13th season title, the first for Smirnoff. "Thank you, America, for believing in us," Martinez said.

After the show, a thrilled Martinez said, "I just want to breathe and take it all in. It's been such an amazing journey."

Jessica Biel wished she would landed 'Notebook' role

2011-11-04T11:35:00.002+06:00

Biel, 29, tells Elle magazine in its December issue, "'The Notebook'...That's one I wanted so badly. I was in the middle of shooting 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' and I auditioned with Ryan Gosling in my trailer - covered in blood."

Needless to say, that probably wasn't the best way to make an impression on director Nick Cassavetes, who "put me through the ringer in an interesting, excitingly creative way," Biel recalls. "But," she continues, "there's a million that get away. We're gluttons for punishment. It's just rejection."

Jessica Biel, still significant to Timberlake

If the rejection ever got too rough, Biel says she's not opposed to dropping out of acting altogether to pursue other interests. "I'd love to write," she tells Elle. "I wrote a lot of short stories and poetry when I was a kid. That was my creative outlet. I've written a short film, and I've written poetry."

Selena Gomez has got a temporary restraining order against a 46 year-old man who her attorney claims has a history of mental illness and spoke about thoughts of killing the entertainer.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge passed the order on Thursday requiring Thomas Brodnicki, the man who is disturbing and threatening the singer, to stay at least 100 yards away from the 19 year-old singer and actress who also is the girlfriend of teenage pop star Justin Bieber.

Russell Crowe appeared as a Superman and as superhero's dad

2011-10-05T23:07:00.002+06:00

Well, he's not really your father's Jor-el.. But, in the latest Superman adaptation, "Man of
Steel" (not to be confused with "Buns of Steel"), Russell Crowe is playing the superhero's dad.

On Monday (Oct. 3), Crowe was photographed in his costume while on the Vancouver set of the film. Despite a flurry of tweets in recent weeks about his strict exercise regimen, Crowe is seen smoking in some of the photos and the U.K.'s Daily Mail comes right out and says it: "the star looks decidedly paunchy."

The new movie, due in theaters in 2013, stars Henry Cavill in the title role. Amy Adams will play Superman's love interest, Lois Lane. Also on board: Michael Shannon as General Zod, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Superman's adoptive human parents, the Kents, and Laurence Fishburne as Daily Planet editor Perry White.

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are rumored to be split their six years relation

2011-09-29T14:01:00.002+06:00

Rumors about the demise of the six-year marriage between Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher were swirling Wednesday on the Internet -- courtesy of a tabloid magazine that alleges they are divorcing and a recent, cryptic tweet by Moore that quotes a Greek philosopher.

This particular celebrity-split rumor, which has not been commented on by the stars’ respective reps, stems from a cover story in Star magazine that says the couple have been living apart for months because Kutcher is supposedly a serial cheater. Oh, and also — here comes the cherry on the seedy tabloid sundae — that the “Two and a Half Men” star allegedly had a secret fling with Britney Spears.

Outlets like People magazine are adding to the rumors by noting that the two are currently on different coasts, are tweeting with less frequency and did not celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary together last weekend.

And then there’s that tweet from Moore (Twitter handle: mrskutcher ), which was sent Friday and may have, according to People, some deeper meaning: “When we are offended at any man’s fault, turn to yourself & study your own failings. Then you will forget your anger. -Epictetus.”

No one has noted that the “G.I. Jane” star also tweeted a quote from basketball coaching legend John Wooden just a few days earlier. That tweet said: “Never mistake activity for achievement.” And I think we all know what that means — probably that Moore liked the quote and decided to share it.

This is not the first time the state of the couple’s marriage has been the subject of speculation. During a trip to Israel last October, there were reports that Moore, 48, and Kutcher, 33, were trying to work on their relationship because of infidelity issues. Again, the reports were never confirmed.

This entire episode is reminiscent of the recent rumors that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith were splitting up, which by all appearances seems to be false. We’ll have to wait and see whether Kutcher and Moore borrow from the Pinkett-Smith playbook and issue a statement letting us all know that their marriage remains intact.

Meredith Kercher was murdered and four flatmates were convicted.

2011-09-27T12:23:00.004+06:00

The murder of Meredith Kercher occurred in Perugia, Italy, on 1 November 2007. Kercher, aged 21 at the time of her death, was a British university exchange student from Coulsdon, South London. She shared an upstairs flat with three other young women. She was sexually assaulted and stabbed, and property belonging to her was stolen.

Meredith Kercher, Rudy Guede, Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito

Rudy Guede, a resident of Perugia, was convicted on 28 October 2008 of the sexual assault and murder of Kercher. His fast-track conviction was upheld, and he is now serving a reduced sentence of 16 years. Raffaele Sollecito, an Italian student, and Amanda Knox, an American student and a flatmate of Kercher, were convicted of sexual assault and murder in a separate trial on 4 December 2009. They were given sentences of 25 and 26 years respectively. Knox and Sollecito have appealed. Their appeal commenced in December 2010 and is scheduled to end in late 2011.

The trials have been the subject of news reports around the world, particularly in Italy, Britain and the United States. The coverage has been criticised for being tabloid in nature rather than presenting the evidence accurately and dispassionately. Reactions to the case are polarized between the view that Knox and Sollecito are innocent victims of a miscarriage of justice. and the view that they were directly involved in Kercher's murder and convicted fairly. The conviction of Rudy Guede has not generated similar controversy.

Kat Von D and Jesse James split after the engagement in January.

2011-09-26T22:41:00.005+06:00

Kat Von D, the “La Ink” star and Jesse James, best known as the former husband of Sandra Bullock, announced their engagement in January.

Then broke up when Von D’s TLC show premiered. Then got back together again when it was cancelled. But now that neither of them have a show to promote, the pair is firmly not together.
