Daawat-e-Ishq (2014): Review

A love story based on food? Heavens rejoice! Daawat-e-Ishq is the latest Yash Raj Films production directed by Habib Faisal starring Parineeti Chopra and Aditya Roy Kapur.

The pair, being relatively new actors were seen sharing the screen space together for the first time for this movie. As part of their promotional gimmicks, they did a 'Canteen Darshan' of well reputed Delhi University Colleges & had mouthfuls of the delicacies on the menus! Did the movie reap rewards for such innovative marketing? Not as much.

The plot includes sugar,spice and everything nice. Although it may seem like a regular rom com targeting general audiences,it goes much beyond that and deepens into the issue of dowry very much existent in today's society.

Daawat-e-Ishq is a perfect blend of romance, comedy, India's rich heritage and of course, love for food. It has a pleasant background score, tranquil and serene setting, different plot and brilliant casting. The best part about the film is that its short and to the point and hence does not drag the plot into unnecessary and considerable lengths. The leading pair's chemistry wasnt given much time to spark and this is where the audience feels as though some undiscovered corners of the story would have added some substance.

Flare Verdict: Even though the recipe wasn't read well,it was a mean meal and turned out to be better owing to the lead characters individual skills put into the film. Parineeti Chopra and Aditya Roy Kapur shine brightly in their authentically cultural yet modern roles. There is not a single dull moment due to Parineeti's and Anupam Kher's acts. Good for a one timer!

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014): Review

The Guardians of the Galaxy is an action packed epic space adventure full of energy humor and huge battle sequences combined to form a near perfect piece of cinematic pulp art. The movie begins with a young boy, Peter Quill sitting in a waiting room of a hospital listening to 'Awesome Mix - Tape Number 1' waiting to bid his last goodbye to his dying mother. His mom gives him a present and asks for his hand, but he's too scared to take it. Just then, she dies. The distraught Peter runs outside and is abducted by a spaceship.

26 years after being abducted, Peter Quill a.ka. Star Lord finds himself the prime target of a manhunt after discovering an Orb wanted by Ronan the Accuser who wants it so that he can trade it to Thanos in exchange for Thanos destroying Xandar (a planet in the Marvel comics universe and home of the Nova Corps). On retrieving the orb Peter decides to sell it on his own and is thrown out of the shop. No sooner is he attacked by Gamora (a sexy combat expert) followed by Rocket (the raccoon) And Groot (a tree like humanoid) who too intend to steal the orb. Somehow all three are arrested by Nova HQ and sent to a space prison. This is where they meet the hulking Drax 'the Destroyer' who has sworn to kill Ronan, but opts instead to kill Gamora, until she confesses she is set to betray Ronan.

At which point the gang begins melding into the Guardians of the Galaxy. Gamora comes up with an idea to sell the Orb to someone else someone more trustful. Peter, Rocket, and Groot agree to help and split the reward. So rocket being the badass genius he is comes up with a fool proof plan to escape the prison. Everyone reaches Knowhere to meet Gamora’s contact Taneleer Tivan. Drax secretly sends a message to Ronan revealing the group's location, because he thinks he can handle the mighty Ronan all alone. Well, he was wrong. While Tivan opens the orb, revealing an Infinity Stone, an item of immeasurable power that destroys all but the most powerful beings who wield it, Tivan's tormented assistant grabs the stone, triggering an explosion that engulfs his collection and destroys her. On realising the immense power it holds star lord decides it is best that the orb must rest in safe hands – Novas. But things don’t always go as they are planned in the Marvel Universe. The evil Nebula steels the Orb for Ronan, who absorbs its energy, preparing to use it as a weapon in his genocidal destruction of Xandar. As the battle followed Groot lost his life protecting his Family. After a nail biting heroic action sequence Guardians Of The Galaxy managed to harness the energy of the Orb, channelling its energy through one another and ultimately using the power to kill Ronan. Afterwards, Nova Prime oversaw the locking of the orb within a secure vault. But this was not the end, we saw Baby Groot dancing to 'Awesome Mix - Tape Number 2' (Peter finally opened the present).

Flare Verdict: Guardians of the Galaxy is an action comedy with mismatched characters spiced up with sharp one-liners, funkified soundtracks and a healthy helping of attitude. After franchises like Iron Man and The Avengers Marvel has succeeded in bringing up something that not only defines heroism but the very essence of having fun. And that’s what this movie is all about. Cheers!

Unfortunately this dialogue won't meet much praise when you are standing in a queue.

You guessed it.when your head says that 'remember that I'm the boss' you should control your emotions.Still better than losing your job.

7. "Jis tarah gobhi ka phool, phool hokar phool nahi hota, waise hi gainde ka phool bhi phool hokar phool nahi hota."

Don't be surprised if the vegetable vendor calls you a fool!

8. "Paisa kya hai, sirf ek number na."

Say this in Las Vegas and have all the tables drooling for you.

9. "Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahin, naamumkin hai."

No matter how much we adore SRK for this dialogue, We simply can't get enough of Amitabh's intensity saying this but keeping in mind that calling yourself a don won't get you arrested only in films.

Parineeti: A Divine Actress - Tracing Through her Roles

Parineeti Chopra, often referred to as Pari, Trisha and also Parineeta during her early days as in infant in this industry has triumphantly marked her place in Bollywood and detaching herself from her label of 'Piggy Chop's cousin'. Shuddh Desi Romance was a venture by Parineeti's debut film director, Maneesh Sharma. Expendables 3: Trailer Review

"Insane. Courageous, but insane."

The action-adventure franchise is back with a third installment, for one last ride.

The action-packed movie stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzenegger; with Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell, Victor Ortiz,Robert Davi, Kelsey Grammer, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas and Harrison Ford as new additions.

The trailer points at Mel Gibson as the antagonist, indicating that Stallone and Gibson started 'The Expendables' together, but had a falling out.

This last mission becomes a clash of old-school style versus high tech expertise, with many new, younger faces added to the team.

The Expendables' most personal battle yet, comes with witty one liners, and power packed action sequences.

Flare Verdict - A total entertainer.

It's Entertainment (2014): Review

Contrary to the name (which may remind you of Vidya Balan's "filmein bass teen cheezo se chalti hai - entertainment, entertainment, entertainment"), the dog in the film named 'Entertainment' is the only entertainment you must look out for.

Akhil Lokhande (Akshay Kumar) plays the road rat who'd do anything for a livelihood. The story's plot revolves around the ridiculous fact that Akhil's biological as well as deceased billionaire father has left behind his wealth of 3000 crore in the name of his faithful dog 'Entertainment' who is carefully named after the billionaires movie business. The fact that Akhil has to fight against an animal to secure his life makes the plot lethargic. Saakshi (Tamannah Bhatia) is the love of Akhil's life but can only marry a rich man who can bring comfort and luxury to her father's (Mithun) mearge life. Here enter two unnecessary villains (Prakash Raj as Karan and Sonu Sood as Arjun) who are co-owners of the 'Entertainment' company and the deceased billionaires cousins who break free from jail to claim this amount. Krushna Abhishek's timely comical dialogues get boring and tiring as the film progresses.

Entertainment belongs to the category of Humshakals although it is definitely on a superior level. You can watch this film if you missed Humshakals.
(We're not responsible for any sort of brain damage after watching any of the above listed though. )

Flare Verdict: Although the movie promises slapstick comedy with a new plot, the only thing it manages to nail is an internet reputation of "Humshakals 2" and hence not much can be said about the fate of this flick. The only reason it scores brownie points is Tamannah.

Singham Returns (2014): Review

Bajirao Singham is back, this time with more élan. The second instalment for the Rohit Shetty directorial Singham, had everybody grooving to 'Aata Majhi Satakli' feat Yo Yo Honey Singh. Apart from the catchy track, the movie kept the pace with an intriguing plot about uncovering the roots of corruption. Based on the reality of life in metropolitans, the movie evolves around a corrupt political party trying to form the government and in the opposition, an honest cop.

The star cast included Kareena Kapoor as Avni, who plays Bajirao's love interest, Ajay Devgn as Singham himself and veteran actors like Anupam Kher who portrays a morally upright politician.
The movie begins with GuruJi (Anupam Kher) introducing his team of young politicians to stand the elections. Enter hilarious villains - BabaJi, the rapist Baba who indulges in saving heaps of black money to find elections through his alliance with an MLA. His worshippers show the modern day man, whose eaten away by any fakester who uses tactics to sit on the throne of divinity.

The plot gets running with Singham working in Mumbai and the trials he faces trying to challenge the system. The punch in the movie is the "singham slap" which could make a person spin. Although Ajay's performance seems a bit dull as compared to the previous instalment in the franchise, the movie makes up for that with his over enthusiastic team starring Daya (yep, CID fame) and the follow up "Daya, darwaza tod!"

Kareena's role only adds to the eye candy in the movie and throws the movie a bit off track. A love story angle in a serious flick sounds a bit uncalled for. Barring these loopholes, Singham Returns manages to be India's highest grosser, passing Salman's Kick.

Flare Verdict: The script is very strong and the actors do justice to their roles. The role of the Mumbai Police comes out heroically. Although, we find Ajay tired and exhausted throughout. To make up for the loss of energy there, we have the over bubbly Kareena as Lady Singham whose more into food than Singham in the movie! On the whole, we expected a more powerful portrayal by the protagonist. The plot lives up to its predecessor.

Busted at the Box Office of 2014!

Unfortunately the year of 2014 started on a slow paced note with the first release Mr.Joe B Carval ho on the January 3rd. The year steadily moved forward with films such as Hassee toh Phassee, Highway and 2 States to follow up, not forgetting the other blockbusters such as Kick, Gunday and Main Tera Hero.

But amidst these high budget projects many small films turned out to be huge disasters owing to the immense & cut-throat competition? lack of promotion or just plain negative reviews.As these films didn't really provoke us to go and watch them,they ultimately ended up becoming the most expensive FLOPS.

1)Jai Ho
Salman Khan has stated in an interview that Jai Ho was very close to his heart and that such films end up being flops. Well, our sympathies Salman.

2)Gulaab Gang
The electric pair of Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit Nene unfortunately failed to electrify the cinemas on women's day. Not as Gulaabi as it seems, eh?

3)Bewakoofiyaan
We dont know whether it was Sonam's repeated look or the onset of the IPL season but bewakoofiyan didn't work inspite of good music and a headstrong director Nupur Astana.

4)Dishkiyaoon
Harman Baweja's list of flops acts has another one added to it .Even Shipa Shetty Kundra's gorgeous moves couldn't sway the audiences to the cinema halls.

5)The Xpose
The film looked very interesting by the layout but we guess the blueprint of this film didn't turn out as exciting on the reel. Plus, Himesh as the lead opposite Honey Singh. Enough said.

6)Pizza
Hungry much? Yes, this was ACTUALLY a movie! One which came and left. A badly made Pizza we say.

7)Lekar Hum Deewana Dil
Arman Kapoor's starry connections did nothing for the film..the only thing probably this film could sell was the music CDs owing to A.R rahman's melodies.

8)One by two
All off screen couples do not turn out well on screen with the same romance and chemistry.Abhay Deol and Preeti Desai are failures on screen just like Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan. (Remember Kurbaan anyone?)

9)Total Siyappa
The film could have been made so much better owing to the controversial plot but but the film just drifted from the plot and turned out rather confusing and unneccesary. A Siyappa indeed!

10)Youngistan
Jacky Bhagnani tried to save his career with this one but it just sank his boat this time. (Like every other time)

Disney Khoobsurat (2014): Teaser Trailer Review

Remember Sonam Kapoor's last chick flick Aisha which released in 2010 based on the novel 'Emma'? Well The Anil kapoor Productions once again presents you a cute venture after collaboration with none other than the Walt Disney films named Khoobsurat.

Khoobsurat released back in 1980 and although this 2014 venture bears the same name of the film, it certainly bears no resemblance to the plot. The trailer begins with our encounter with the 'royal family' where Nirmila Devi Rathore (Ratna Pathak) is the head of the family. Her prim and proper behavior is violently countered by the royal misfit Dr. Milli Chakraborty (Sonam Kapoor) who is a physiotherapist. Being the need of the hour she enters the royal household.

Here she encounters the royal prince (Fawad Khan), a tinge of romance is spotted between the two. Dr. Milli's cool avatar is not met with praise as the royals are not accustomed to displacing antique furniture, calling mothers by their own names and modern fashion. As you reach the end of the trailer, you can't help but notice how similar the setting of the film is to the 2001 Hollywood film Princess Diaries.

Flare Verdict: Despite Sonam Kapoor's unnatural attempt at being a fun and modern doctor surely she scores at her repetitive dialogue delivery and 'Khoobsurat' look. The soundtrack looks appealing and the cast looks well defined. What doesn't appeal is its unoriginal script, still the trailer does not displease.

Her caliber and conviction to be one out of the crowd has made her one of the most successful actress in Bollywood. So here's our pre-review of the much awaited movie of 2014, Mary Kom.

And now, after seeing her performance in Mary Kom she has proved herself once again that there's no role that she can't do. The film is about the life of the amazing boxer Mary Kom. Her journey to go against her family's will and all the struggle she faced to earn pride for India. Mary was never able to get the support from her parents, but her dedication towards the sport made her what she is today.

Priyanka Chopra is without any doubt the apt person for this, maybe because she has the required strength and characteristics of a sportsperson. Other than this, the movie has a fresh starcast including Darshan Kumar as Mary's husband. The music seems to be quite promising too with songs like "Dil yeh ziddi hai'. In all, we expect a lot from the film and we hope that the film earns whatever it deserves.

Kick 2014 Review

"Go get your Kick!" - that's one sentence synonymous to what everybody whose watched Kick has on their mouth. Undoubtedly a blockbuster already, Kick is the Salman Khan powerhouse of stunts, kickass songs and in the midst of a deadly plot, some romance. Perfect ingredients for a 100 crore club entry. Right folks?

Coming to the plot, it's been host to mixed responses. On one hand the movie has garnered the title of becoming the butt of all jokes and on the other, some critics say that this was Salman's best flick in a decade. Sajid Nadiadwala's directorial debut puts Salman, and only Salman in the limelight, who would do anything for his kick.

Wooing his narcissist lady love, Devi Lal aka Salman gets the "kick" into his love life but things don't go as smooth and a poor Jacqueline is seen lamenting the loss of her lover. Himanshu, the cop, also mentions a similar lament, but not for his love (unless this was dostana 2 and Homosexuality have Salman enough kick!). The guy the cops were baffled by was a masked master theif.

As the plot unfolds, we find extraordinary Salman presence excluding the take-off-your-shirt factor. The cinematography works well for a predictable script and the dance sequences add finace to the movie, specially the item number starring Nargis Fakhri.

We'd say Salman pulls of his dual characters of Devi(L) effortlessly and his screen presence is solid. Mithun plays Salman's father and Nawazuddin plays the villain. The story follows Sallu Bhai's change of heart and the Dabangg guy walks away with his Eidi towards the end of Kick.

Flare Verdict: An entertainer. Not lousy like Bodyguard and other action oriented cinema, this flick has some drilling on the script and the scenes. Salman and Jacqueline look great together, but the latter's acting is pretty average. Not to worry, Sallu Bhai walks away with the cake this time. This is a Salman Khan flick that follows the journey of Devi/Devil as he juggles through thievery, love, action, drama and well, the kick.

"...I don't love. I fuck, hard." And the trailer of the year is here. The epic best seller novel - Fifty Shades Of Grey is finally ready with the first installment of movies for its franchise. The trailer, as we'd like to put it is intense and leaves little to our imagination.

Slated for a Valentines day release in 2015, the movie will not only feature the red room of pain, the clumsy Ana or The Lord of perfection, Mr. Grey. Till February 14, it's Keep Calm and Obey Christian Grey! The lead pair of the movie are Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan.

Flare Verdict: Brace yourselves because this is one movie that will obsess you ! The trailer is a sneak peak into the eye candy awaiting.

With the bold trailer on screen, all eyes are set at Finding Fanny. About one thing, we're very sure- the movie would be the bold entrant in Bollywood with its double meaning dialogue, adult humour and the quirky cast.

Is this the Indian rip off of Friends With Benefits (2011) or No Strings Attached (2011)? The movie entails a journey of 5 odd 'balls' on a search for passion, love, self discovery and in the bargain, Stefanie Fernandez. Deepika Padukone plays the late twenty something old virgin paired opposite Arjun Kapoor, much light on whose character has not been shed. With Naserrudin Shah playing the maniac in search for his love Fanny, Dimple Kapadia and Pankaj Kapoor literally seen romancing, Finding Fanny is sure to set the screen ablaze!

Although the first look does not give much off the plot, the movie will mostly capture the different moods of 5 strangers and their take on love, relationships and passion. The movie is set in Goa and features a road trip of finding solace and figuring out the zeal in their previously pointless lives.

Indian audiences have always had resistance to open minded cinema, but will Fanny be the trendsetter this time? Times have changed and so have preferences, maybe we're ready to embrace bold stories after all. Directed by Homie Adajania and produced by Dinesh Vijan, the movie is scheduled for a September release.

Shraddha Kapoor Working on a Muscular Body for ABCD 2!

The actress also added that she has been nervous about matching steps with her co-actor, Varun Dhawan. "Varun is a fantastic dancer. I am nervous to match dance steps with him. Besides, Varun is a very dear friend, so I am also excited to work with him," she added.

Review: Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania - A Filmi Love Story!

Adding another feather to their cap, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan were seen in their second Dharma Productions flick. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania hit the theaters on July 11, 2014 and has been declared a hit with an overall box office record of Rs. 50 Crore and counting.

The movie starts with the Designer Lehenga obssessed Ambala girl, Kaavya, for whom the sole purpose of marriage was a 5 lakh worth 'Kareena Kapoor Wala designer Lehenga' that she could brag about to her friends. She agrees to arranged marriage considering the ill fate of her sister's love marriage, which induced a lot of animosity from her younger-version of Amrish Puri like father. In a bid to search the outfit, she sets out to Delhi.

Enter Humpty his highness! This guy is completely whacky, ambition-less and carefree and the only child of the 'Vidya Book Store' Owner (and not a vella test tube baby). The duo meet when Humpty pulls off a daredevil act by hanging Kaavya's Mama, his professor, off the backyard swing to fetch passing marks in his exams. Kaavya comes to his rescue for a mere Rs. 10,000. Next up, they meet frequently and become friends overtime. Kaavya was in Delhi for her friends wedding, who was trapped in an MMS scandal by her ex, Bhaanu. Together, Humpty and Kaavya undercover Bhaanu with Mrs. Chibber (the professor's wife) in a hotel room and make him taste his own medicine. The girl gets her money back and Bhaanu was taught a lesson. Amidst all this and the marriage fever, Kaavya and Humpty fall in love. Humpty arranges for her the money for her dream outfit by sacrificing the money his dad had saved for their car (a Maruti Celerio).

Post interval, Humpty travels to Ambala to woo his lady love's grumpy father (DDLJ reference, again) and marry the girl of his dreams but wait... Enter the perfect arranged husband - Angad. This man is everything Humpty isn't - well off, well built, an amazing cook, a doctor in the US and Kaavya's dad's favorite - by default. After a lot of beatings from his prospective father-in-law, Humpty still holds on (he tries to prove Angad gay with the help of his friends) and in the end, all's well. With the big-fat Indian wedding where Kaavya weds Humpty with the consent of her father.

Flare Verdict: Amazing music, specially 'Samjhawan' by Arijit Singh and the revamped version of Saturday Saturday. Samjhawan Unplugged by Alia Bhatt explores her potential as a singer. A laughter riot with a hopeless lover who goes through beatings, thrashing and loads of humiliation for his lady love but it all seems like a small price for the girl of his dreams. In all, the perfect Bollywood ending with the SRK style proposal. (No, not Varun, Alia does it this time!)
