It looked like a chick flick, which it very well might be, but it was fanscinating in its examination of human nature. Relationships of almost every kind are depicted in what turns out to me a web of social connections and run-ins.

A truly all-star cast including Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston and Ben Affleck, just to name a few, offer some great acting. This movie really gets you thinking about the reality of relationships. Unlike most movies, this film gives you a look at the reality of our social life and how we as humans connect.

I was overwhealmingly pleased with "He's Just Not That Into You." This movie reminds me of the movie "Prime" just because of how grounded in reality it is.

I think I'll buy this movie on DVD.

Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail (2009)

My Rating: (70/100)

My Review: I think Tyler Perry's Madea character is comedic genius. She is incredibly funny, great in her timing, and has that strong, hard-headed attitude you can't help but love. However, Tyley Perry always uses Madea as background to a more serious storyline. Sometimes that idea can work, however with this film I was left with wanting more Madea.

There are some okay messages here, but I went to this movie for the laughs. I got some laughs, but I had the feeling that seperated, the stories would have been better developed.

If you get a chance, you should watch the filmed stage version of "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail." It has a completely different storyline, but for me the play was more cohesive. Everything came together and the laughs were much more frequent.

Taken (2009)

My Rating: 75/100

So, I'm sitting in the theater, expecting a high-octane, rumbling action movie, but instead I'm greeted with a fluffy, drawn out, miserable begining. It almost seemed like the film makers were trying to make this a heartfelt, emotionally moving, valuable story. I was thinking to myself, "Common now! No one came here to see this crap." However, once the action started, it didn't let up.

The actions scenes were kick-ass awesome. Do you ever get so pissed off at someone that you imagine you socking it to them a good one, or that you had a gun in your belt, not to shoot them, just to scare the #$%& out of them? Me neither. But it's that feeling of sweet revenge that encompasses the whole movie and keeps you on a violence-high throughout. A little more tension would have added some complexite to the story, but it's always fun to see the good guy be so good at sticking it to the bad guy.

The ending would have been great had the film makers ended it once the action was over. But like the begining, we have even more emotional fluff, which would have been okay, except it wasn't even good fluff. Absolutely a waste of film.

Liam Neeson is in the movie, it must have a great story, right? Not so. But if it's an action film you're looking for, Taken is a pretty good choice.

Movie-o-meter: Watch it once. (Maybe come a little late so you miss the first 15 minutes.)

Anticipating: Princess Kaiulani Movie (2009?)

Being Hawaiian and from Hawaii, when I first heard the news that a movie was being produced about the life and legacy of Princess Kaiulani (Crown Princess of Hawaii) I was overjoyed. Although final production of the film has pushed back the release numerous times, I am hopeful that we'll get a chance to see it within the next few months.

This movie will give Hawaii and the Hawaiian people unprecedented exposure. I believe a lot of people don't even know that Hawaii was once a independent nation that was quite recently (from a historical stand point) overthrown and eventually taken over by the United States. Many Hawaiian groups are challenging the accuracy of the story, but from what I've read and seen, I believe the film's director and screenwriter, Marc Forby, is attempting to capture the real story of Princess Kaiulani while trying to reach the largest possible audience.

I will definitely keep you updated about this much anticipated film. I'll give you a release date as soon as I'm able.

For more information on Princess Kaiulani check out Wikipedia's article.
For more information on the movie and it's producers visit Matador Pictures.

Bride Wars (2009)

My Rating: 82/100

I went into this movie expecting a spirited, yet trivial chick flick. To know ones surprise, much of the movie was just that.

Two women are best of friends until their lavishly planned weddings are accidentally booked on the same day. Materialistic and shallow name-calling ensues, of course. What did catch me by surprise was the ending (which I won't reveal here) which showed depth and realism.

Although most would say the classic happily-ever-after endings are nice, I am personally more moved by a movie with an unexpected, thought provoking ending which still brings closure to the story. (I hate open ended movies! You know, setups for sequels...eww!) However redeeming a movie is with it's ending, it does not justify a mundane and predictable beginning.

Movie-o-meter: Watch it once.

My Top 10 Animated Films

I've seen a lot of blogs with lists and I particularly enjoy those posts. So I've decided to post one of my own. Here are my top ten animated movies of all time (in reverse order).

10. The make-up was obviously light and the filming felt really raw, almost like you were actually at an old church in the dead of Winter. It added an interesting element to the movie itself and was excellently complemented by a carefully written, witty, and thought provoking script which allowed the complex story take center stage.

While I was impressed with the script and filming, the acting is what I'll remember from this film. Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, giants in the industry, were great; however, I was even more impressed with Amy Adams. Her acting, especially her facial expressions, capture the true tension that encompasses the whole movie. She is brilliant!

Run Time: 104 min
MPAA Rating: PG-13

Gran Torino (2009)

My Rating: A (98/100)

I've never been a fan of Clint Eastwood, especially his acting. However, I came away from "Gran Torino" with a new found respect for Mr. Eastwood and his cinematic genius. His performance is one of the best I've seen in the past few years.

One trait of an excellent film, in my opinion, is realistic and complex characterization. Clint Eastwood, in what he is calling his final performance as an actor, in essence is the movie. By the movie's end you feel as if you know his character, Walt Kowalski, on a profoundly deep level. You can feel his pain and experience his growth.

I can see why Clint Eastwood chose this role to be his final performance. Indeed, he has created a masterpiece of film.

Run Time: 116 min
MPAA Rating: R

M. Knight Shyamalan's "The Happening" for a second time, I noticed that I may have been unfairly harsh on the poor guy. Although I stand by my statement that his script could have been better, especially in the dialogue which came from Mark Wahlberg's character.

However, the movie wasn't a complete disaster and I did see the thought put into a lot of the scenes. I also noticed the challenges Shyamalan faced in getting particular shots. (For example, the scene where the jeep crashes into the tree and ejects two people through the windshield.)

I hope Mr. Shyamalan can deliver a movie of the same caliber of his original masterpiece that was "The Sixth Sense."

Dark Knight (2008)

MY RATING: A

RUN TIME: 152 min

MPAA RATING: PG-13

MY REVIEW: Dark Knight is the unforgettable, frightening thriller of the year. Dark, complex and unnerving, this latest Batman movie will make you realize that all those that came before it were just attempts to capture the real essence of darkness that Dark Knight nailed.

The late Heath Ledger gave a chillingly creepy and brilliant performance. Ledger gave us that truly demented Joker that Nicholson failed to give us in the 1989 Batman. Ledger's Joker took over the movie and almost overshadowed Bale's Batman. I found the suggestion of a bond between the evil criminal and the outcasted hero very complex and thought provoking. I smell Academy Award. Dark Knight is an unstoppable crime thrilling masterpiece that is sure to become the best of its genre.

I am a big fan of Heath Ledger. Although this was one of his greatest preformances, its heartbreaking that he's not here to give us more.

Sponsored Link

RiffTrax - We don't make movies, we make fun of them!

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

<img style="float:left; a superhero with a drinking problem, that's good stuff. Superb specials effects made it possible for Hancock's humor to be very effective.

The second half is a completely different story. It was as if someone completely different wrote the second half and wasn't really sure how it was supposed to end. I'm not even sure how it was supposed to end. I'm unsure if they were trying to us up for a sequel (BTW, I HATE when movies are just setups for the next installment!), but the ending was really messy and ruined the whole experience. Yuck!

All in all, good acting, back writing and I wish I was a superhero!

Easy Ways to Make Money from Home >>Click Here<<

Wanted (2008)

<img style="float:left; Morgan Freeman.

M. Night Shyamalan's career is over. I thought he would redeem himself with this movie, but I was sorely wrong. They sold the movie as Shyamalan's first R-rated film, but for what? Yes, there was some graphic violence and disturbing scenes, but the movie was filled with scene of almost comical "junkness." Scenes that were meant to be bone-chilling scary instead made you want to laugh at the stupidity of the dialogue and shitidity of the acting.

Overall, a big, big disappointment!

Kung Fu Panda (2008)

MY RATING: B+

RUN TIME: 92 min

MPAA RATING: PG

MY REVIEW: Move over Pixar and take Nemo with you because DreamWorks has just put out the next great masterpiece of digital animation. The artwork in Kung Fu Panda was even better than my dream of being in China with Mulan. From start to finish the detail and richness of the animation was incredible. Truly a visual delight. At one point you can see leaves shimmering in the sunlight and the work that must have went into small details like that is hard to imagine. The last time I fell in love with graphics like this was Shrek, however, Kung Fu Panda takes animation to whole new level. Pixar has a lot of work to do if it wants to catch up.

The movies biggest surprise was Jack Black, the panda named Po. (There's something about that name.) Jack black actually was not annoying. He was able to wash off his characteristic crude and creepy demeanor and offer a performance with real craft. It was a controlled, almost reserved Black that I found refreshing and enjoyable. Angelina Jolie, who plays Tigress, on the other hand gave a bland performance that fell short.

Just because you're making a family film doesn't mean you need to write the same, predictable story that you expect from a charming Kung Fu movie. With that said, this was a great family film with good laughs and creative fight scenes with minimal violence. With "sucked" as the only real naughty word I could pick out, this movie is great for the little ones.

I've been waiting for this year's first animated film (and No! Speed Racer doesn't count) and I was very pleased with Kung Fu Panda. With an A-class cast and mind-blowing animation this movie will definitely become a classic.

You Don't Mess with the Zohan (2008)

MY RATING: C

RUN TIME: 113 min

MPAA RATING: PG-13

MY REVIEW: After watching the preview for this movie, I was left thinking this was going to be a mess of stereotypes and offensive, crude humor. Oh Boy! Was I right or what?! I'm not saying there is anything wrong with any of that, but Adam Sandler took it all to a new low.

There were funny parts. To open your movie while panning out from the crotch of a man wearing what looked to be his 12-year-old daughter's clothes had me giggling and the slap across the face with a well controlled foot made me grin. However, a lot of the humor turned major real world issues into street corner laughs. You could tell everyone that was laughing was wondering if they were being judged by everyone sitting around them.

The constant celebrity cameos (most notably Mariah Carey) couldn't offset the political incorrectness of the movie. There was nothing really sinister or mean-spirited about the humor, it was just too overdone, too . . . Adam Sandler.

Overall, "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" drew some good laughs, but I was left more ashamed of the intolerance it showed and the poorly written jokes showcasing our ever present sterotypes. Indeed, we have seen Adam Sandler in much, much better roles.

Baby Mama (2008)

MY REVIEW: I'm currently on Kauai, an island with very limited movie venues. Following the shutdown of the cinema in Kapaa, HI, I believe the Kukui Grove Cinema in Lihue, HI is the only theater remaining (I could be wrong). This three auditorium cinema left me with one movie I had not yet seen, Speed Racer. As the movie started I was horrified at the graphics. I felt as though I was drowning in a neon-lit clown house. Despite the nightmare that was the first five minutes of the movie, the movie progressed with a decent plot at a good pace.

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; MY RATING: B+

RUN TIME: 144 min

MPAA RATING: PG

REVIEW: I should start off by saying that I have not read the book version of The Chronicles of Narnia of which this movie is based. I did watch the first movie, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe," which preceded this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the first movie and was looking foreword to this the second installment of the collection.

I find there is a delicate balance in producing a movie such as this, where you need to give the audience a movie with some closure and finality, but still leave it open enough to where the next movie can pick up without having to start all over. I believe this movie achieved that and though I was left with some concerns by the end I was able to leave the theatre with a "closed book." The story had been resolved and you weren't left with the story unfinished (such as the ridiculous ending of the "The Golden Compass").

THE GOOD:
Prince Caspian was my favorite throughout, not only because of his dangerously good looks, but there was some excellent acting on his part and he did an excellent job at characterizing his role. The remaining characters were also quiet convincing and you know your villain did a good job when you have that gut-wrenching hate for him, which I had throughout this movie. I wouldn't call the graphics out of this world, but they were good and convincing enough for me.

THE BAD:
Some parts of the movie were a bit too corny for me. Though I wasn't as flabbergasted as the obnoxious girls behind me who would let out grunts and laughs anytime there was some chivalry in the movie, I thought some of the saluting and grovelling was a bit much. As for the plot, I enjoyed most of it but it seemed *POSSIBLE SPOILER*(Skip to the next paragraph to avoid any potential spoiler) they had complicated the story so much, that it would be interesting to see how they would resolve it. But then they used the easy way out and let magic swoop in and save the day. A let down for me.

OVERALL:
A good-looking-- I mean, a good movie with some good acting and graphics. A little more creativity in the plot would've improved my view of the movie. However, I would watch it again.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS (2008)

"What Happens in Vegas" was not a movie that I was itching to see for a long time. Preview wise, I didn't find it very appealing. It takes a lot to make me laugh however, and the scene in the trailer where Cameron Diaz's character slides across the bar, falls off the end, then after a silent moment by spectators pops back up with a cheerful scream did give me a chuckle. I went into the theatre prepared for a predictable chick-flick with not-quiet-laugh-out-loud comedy.

However, I was pleasantly surprised with the movie's simplicity and candor. There isn't a million settings or characters of which to keep track. A plot that I thought was too simple for a movie was developed into something with actual substance. Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz both have an energy which brightens the movie. There are moments of rawness that, although makes the movie seem like it was shot in a single shoot, did make their characters really come alive. You felt like you were really watching two people in their everyday life.

Overall a good movie. Not a movie I would watch twice, but I had not regrets after watching it once. So-so comedy, I felt the more dramatic elements of the movie were much more entertaining than the comedy. Good lessons and some fair acting.

MY RATING: C+
