Superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) have ruled the Las Vegas Strip for years, raking in millions with illusions as big as Burt's growing ego. But lately the duo's greatest deception is their public friendship, while secretly they've grown to loathe each other. Facing cutthroat competition from guerrilla street magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), whose cult following surges with each outrageous stunt, even their show is starting to look stale. But there's still a chance Burt and Anton can save the act-both onstage and off-if only Burt can get back in touch with what made him love magic in the first place.

Want to see a film about Spring Breakers turning into hard core gangsta
b*****s? Right, neither did I. And yes, the slang spelling of gangster
is totally mandatory in this situation.

If you haven't heard of Spring Breakers, I'm sure you will soon largely
due to the hype it's generating because of its cast. Spring Breakers
follows Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine
on their spring break in sunny Florida. In order to get there, the
girls rob a local restaurant and the trip that follows is a bit more
outrageous than the girls expect. Yes, it contains your typical 'spring
break' parties, but along with the drugs and alcohol, the girls find
themselves in the company of a local arms dealer (James Franco). The
path that follows isn't what the girls had planned, and may be a little
too much for some of them.

Now, I wanted to like this movie. Honestly, I really did. But there
were too many things I couldn't quite handle, like a strange musical
moment where Franco serenades the girls with an oh too popular Britney
Spears song. Yes, that did happen, and no I will not get back those 3
minutes of my life.

I will give the film credit in a lot of areas. Personally, I found
Director/Writer Harmony Korine unique and the film pushes most of the
cast members (Hudgens, Gomez and Benson in particular) out of their
stereotypes, and in a strange way, that worked. The problem was I
wasn't sold on the plot. As the girl's 'adventure' with Franco
continues, I lost interest. Yeah, I could buy the coming of age bits,
but the whole 'party girls turning into James Franco's hardcore gangsta
b*****s' bit was too ridiculous for me. I understand that there are
probably a lot of 'deep' factors in this film that a lot of critics are
going to obsess over, but personally, I couldn't overlook the
ridiculousness of some moments enough to appreciate that other side of
the film.

Basically, if you want my advice, this movie isn't for your average
film goer. If you want something you can sit and enjoy, skip this in
theaters, and ignore it by the time it pops up on Netflix. And if you
were curious about it because your buddy told you Vanessa Hudgens boobs
are in it, you were lied to my friend. Completely lied to.

Rating:

I was invited to "The Host" premiere last night and was very impressed
by the film. I'm not a Twilight fan and have not read the book; If
anything I was very suspect of this film and for whatever reason even
felt negatively towards it (in an eye-rolling manner).

That said, I found myself walking out of the theater quite surprised.
And yes, I still have my manhood and haven't transformed into "A
Hoster" or a "Hostling" or whatever they may call the new breed.
Honestly, I thought it had a wonderfully intriguing plot, good acting,
and I was completely engaged. Yes, there was a bit of "romantic
cheesiness" but it seemed to handle itself well and even poked fun of
itself at times for this fact. I think if it wasn't for the excellent
work of Niccol and Saoirse it might have easily slipped into laughable
cheese, but amicably doesn't. Plenty of sophisticated action as well as
thought-provoking concepts of love, loyalty, perseverance. A well
rounded film overall. I especially enjoyed William Hurt but all the
acting was on par.

Perhaps the Twilights were focused on teenagers but as a 30something
guy I really liked it. I would definitely recommend giving this movie a
chance to all. I'm just in the market now for a shiny silver Lotus.

Has its moments but outside of Sam Raimi's strong directorial efforts and Rachel Weisz's fun and wickedly sassy performance, the movie plays more like a Star Wars prequel.

Rating: 5/10

Mildly entertaining look at the origins of the characters from 'The
Wizard of Oz" has everything down pack. From great visuals to
imaginative set pieces, this film has everything. Its does not have
however a single interesting character outside of the film's main
villain and her good witch sister. Not to mention the fact that its
script is as thin as a sheet of paper and the plot reeks of a Star Wars
prequel but with out the light sabers. Its main hero Oscar Diggs
(Played by James Franco) is not interesting at all and it does not help
matters that Franco is miscast and while Oscar is supposed to be a bit
of a conman with a heart; Franco comes across more as a degenerate
deviant with his performance. While Franco is sputtering out of control
performances wise, it falls on his co-stars to pick up his slack and
one of them is Rachel Weisz, who plays the oldest witch sister Evanora,
who rules Oz with a velvet iron glove. She is manipulative and cunning
and in my mind the best thing about this film. While most of the things
in this film are mostly kids stuff, Weisz infuses her character with a
wickedly sassy seductive charm that elevates this film past most of its
problems. Her showmanship with the material is greatly appreciated,
especially when after a while; you are getting quite annoyed with most
of the characters in this movie, especially the computer generated
ones. Another actor who picks up Franco's slack is Michelle Williams,
who is very charming in a good girl kind of way and is the only actor
in the film who can hold the screen with Weisz performance wise. The
movie could have worked much better if it just had Weisz and Williams
as the leads but unfortunately, its not and we have to suffer though
Franco trying to be charming in a squirmy kind of way and suffer though
probably the movie's worse offense, which is the character of Theodora
played by Mila Kunis, who redefines the word "Miscast". Theodora is
supposed to be innocent in this film and gradually lose her innocence
to become (Spoiler) the iconic "Wicked Witch of the West".
Unfortunately, Mila comes across as interesting as a block of wood in
this film and her transformation towards the climax ends up being more
funny in a very bad sort of way than revealing. It does not help
matters that Mila looks as disinterested in her character as the
audience is and a better actor with more range could have brought more
to it.

All and all, it had its moments but its problems weight it down.

Rating: 8/10

First off… this is a highly recommended film for anyone with a good
heart – and even a few lacking it. The film opens with voice-over
narration introducing The Crood family. The animated sequence is
minimalist and emulates cave drawings (a theme running through the
film) while it also felt like an homage to Dusan Vukotic, The Zagreb
School and other 'reduction' animators of the 1950s and 60s. The story
has a monomyth structure that integrates family roles in at the
critical spots (future husband as herald, villain as co-paternal
figure, etc.). The first scenes have a specular quality and with a
minimalist mise-en-scene it might have been regarded that these
directorial choices were purely exploitative to the 3-D gimmick. Good
fun action establishes the quirks of a 'pre-nuclear' family
experiencing 'cave-in fever'. Father Crood (voiced by Cage) has all the
qualities and clichés of a responsible father. In fact, the characters
and the story are quite cliché – but it isn't exploitative. Freshness
is retained through moments of self-reflexivity (the popcorn pile,
Guignol shows) and clever situational puns. The minimalist elements of
the staging and mise-en-scene are banished like darkness in light once
the family are forced to venture out into the more majestic parts of a
fantasy world. It is a fantasy world – with dozens of original
creatures and hybrids that make one think of Disney's Alice in
Wonderland. Some of these creatures provide strong 'support' such as
Belt and 'Duggie'. Even 'villains' are appropriated as pets in this
dangerous, threatening but awe-inspiring and enlightening world. The
threats are ominous but not frightening and children of all ages will
enjoy the show (just keep the kids away from Gears of War Kryll
instead). The Croods are cute animated characters and the animation
itself is of top quality and the highest possible technical sheen (the
luscious fur was the most enticing and tantalizingly tactile lure in
the film). The cave-family is physically atavistic in appearance, but
jovial and comically gentle in demeanor. The diastema creates warm
smiles and helps forge loving moments. The ending is a happy one and
there is no Bambi-mother slaughter moment in the entire film (I guess
we are past that now huh). One of the advantages of digital rendering
is the open possibilities that lie outside the strict film medium – the
180 flip dive into the water is mesmerizing. There are great moral
lessons about learning and acceptance that do not preach nor are
prophetic. My favorite part of the film is a sequence where Father
Crood makes his first effort at a change-for-the-better by adorning
himself in 'modern' innovations like the 'Pre-Funk' George Clinton
coif. His ideas backfire into a laugh-out-loud homage to Looney Tunes
mayhem. One other homage stood out (for this reviewer) in the genial
portrayal of a quest for paradise – that is Wil Vinton's Adventures of
Mark Twain and the Adam and Eve story that Vinton retells within that
film. You can't tell me there aren't Biblical allusions either – with
the Noah's Ark moments at the end, paradise lost theme and Adam-Eve
procreation imperative underlying a more overt father-daughter
relationship of trust, growth and acceptance. This film text is rich
for scholarly and critical analysis. The relationship of minimalism and
magnitude play well for a sophisticated viewer while the genial takes
on universal family – and human – values will entertain all… oh and
the mouse-elephants… if you see The Croods for no other reason, do it
for the mouse-elephants.

I saw this is in a special preview the other night and I was
underwhelmed. Sure, Channing as Duke, Byung-Hun Lee as Storm Shadow,
Arnie Vosloo as Zartan and Luke Bracey as Cobra Commander are back (his
suit finally looks the way it is supposed to) Jonathan Pryce as wimpy
US president as well, but this pic took an awfully long time to be
developed and find a release date. Now we get Ray Park as Snake Eyes
and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Roadblock (where has he been all this
time?) A hold-over from last summer to add 3D effects and some extra
scenes with Tatum, which they did in the beginning; unfortunately that
meant some other fight scenes with Rza as Blind Master and Elodie Yung
as Jinx had to be shortened to not be dragged down plot wise in the
middle part of the movie, a fantastic fight (and flight) sequence in
and near the mountain monastery where Storm Shadow has to be abducted
to be brought up to speed about what Zartan has really been up to with
Cobra. Walton Goggins turns up as Chief Warden Nigel James of an
extreme underground prison facility and Bruce Willis gets a few good
scenes as gun nut General Joe Colton, whose house seems to be a whole
arsenal of weaponry – and wth is James Carville doing in this?? – I
liked wonder woman Adrianne Palicki as Brenda – whoops, Jaye, but you
can tell that the production as a whole struggled mightily to keep this
movie to no more than a 100 minutes in edit. Scenes are set up
elaborately only to be over in their entirety before you know it, in a
plot which resembles the "Renegades" TV story line with a little James
Bond from yesteryear thrown in (think "Diamonds Are Forever" and
"Moonraker"). Directed by Jon M. Chu who took over from Stephen Sommers
in this sequel, the movie offers little more than some extra VFX over
its predecessor. I wished I had seen a little extra of Zartan and Jinx
but oh well. Somehow this franchise seems to lend itself better to TV
serials and animated stuff… great live action movies don't seem to be
part of it. I marked my review as containing spoilers but most of this
you can glean from the trailers already.
