Vishal plays a medical sales representative who lives happily with his wife, played by Dushara Vijayan, and their two children. Despite earning a modest salary, he dreams of buying a car. Since he cannot afford a new one, he buys a used car. However, danger follows his family because of the car, resulting in the deaths of his wife and daughter.

Vishal believes that his own father is responsible for the deaths, which intensifies his anger towards him. When his father comes to meet him, Vishal refuses to see him, insults him, and sends him away. Why is Vishal angry with his father? Who exactly is his father? What does Vishal do to those responsible for his wife and daughter’s deaths? ‘Magudam’ attempts to answer these questions through a masala-packed action drama.

Vishal has acted in and directed the film. Although it is based on the familiar father-son sentiment and action-masala formula, the director seems to have taken the concept in an extremely exaggerated direction.

Vishal appears in two roles—as the father and son—with three different looks. Unfortunately, the transformations do not work at all. His natural appearance as the medical representative is convincing, and his performance in that role is decent. However, his younger and older looks as the father, along with his performances in those portions, fail to make an impact.

Anjali, who plays Vishal’s wife in the father’s storyline, suits the role of a fish seller, although her performance feels somewhat over-the-top. Dushara Vijayan, who plays the son Vishal’s wife, once again impresses with her natural performance.

Jayaprakash, John Vijay, Thambi Ramaiah, Chitra Lakshmanan, Vamsi Krishna, Sabumon Abdusamad, Ajay and Arjai Prince, among others, appear to perform according to their own styles, while some seem miscast in their respective roles.

Cinematographers Richard M. Nathan and Abhinandhan have handled the camera with great speed. The action sequences are filmed energetically, while the portions set in the 1980s are presented with excessive use of colours.

The songs composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar have commercial appeal, while the background score adds energy to the action-heavy and loud sequences.

Editor N. B. Srikanth seems to have missed several opportunities to trim the film. As a result, unnecessary scenes remain in the final cut, making the film longer and testing the audience’s patience.

Vishal’s direction raises questions about his overall cinematic experience. Although the film follows a conventional commercial formula, it fails to maintain a smooth pace or satisfy fans of commercial cinema.

The review criticises the film for its casting, handling of comedy, lengthy runtime and lack of attention to several filmmaking aspects. The reviewer suggests that Vishal may be better off concentrating on acting rather than directing.

Although Surya’s decision initially shocks his mother, she is happy that there is now a child in the family whom she can pamper and who can carry on the family name. However, her happiness is short-lived when the child suddenly faces a life-threatening situation. While searching for the surrogate mother to save the child, Surya is shocked to discover that she is Mamitha Baiju, who is 20 years younger than him.

When he informs her about the child’s condition and asks her to come with him, Mamitha, who became a surrogate mother for money, agrees to travel with Surya for the same reason. However, as time passes, she begins to fall in love not only with the child she gave birth to but also with its father, Surya.

Surya rejects Mamitha’s love, citing their age difference. Why is he so determined to avoid marriage? Does Mamitha, who persistently pursues him, manage to change Surya’s mind? These questions form the core of ‘Viswanath & Sons’, which presents the story as a family drama centered around an affluent family.

Leading stars often take their roles very seriously, believing that their characters should convey some meaningful advice to society. Surya does the same in this film. Despite playing an extremely wealthy man, his character emphasizes the importance of remaining humble, respecting one’s parents and protecting those who place their trust in you.

Surya, who can effortlessly adapt himself to any character, appears stylish as businessman Sanju Viswanath. At the same time, he has performed in a way that appeals to audiences from all sections. Whether it is refusing to accept the love of a woman younger than him, remaining firm about not getting married, or indirectly expressing his affection for his mother, his effortless performance keeps the audience engaged. In the scene where he breaks down while thinking about his mother, he even manages to move the entire theatre to tears.

Mamitha Baiju, who plays the female lead, wins the audience’s hearts with a lively performance that suits both her age and the character. She effortlessly switches between American-accented English and Tamil. She beautifully portrays a wide range of emotions—including happiness, sadness, love and shyness—and adds considerable strength to the screenplay.

Radhika, who plays Surya’s mother, brings her considerable experience to the role. Her natural and contemporary performance helps the scenes progress smoothly.

Raveena Tandon, Sunil Reddy, Rajeev Menon and the other actors in supporting roles provide strong support to the screenplay.

Cinematographer Nimish Ravi has captured the visuals on a grand scale, establishing from scene to scene that the film has been made on a very large budget.

The songs composed by G.V. Prakash Kumar are soothing as well as lively, and pleasantly touch the heart. Even the background score has been presented melodically, creating a warm and pleasant mood.

Although the screenplay moves at a slow pace, editor Naveen Nooli has put the scenes together in a way that keeps the audience’s attention firmly fixed on the screen.

Written and directed by Venky Atluri, the film tells the story from the perspective of a man who dislikes the institution of marriage. At the same time, the director boldly explores the characters’ real backgrounds and their affluent lifestyle. However, it is Surya who deserves even more credit for taking on such a controversial character.

Despite its simple story, slow-paced screenplay and light-hearted scenes, Venky Atluri keeps the audience engaged from beginning to end. However, the way the mother reacts casually, without confronting or questioning her son even after knowing the background of his overseas trip, is somewhat uncomfortable.

Although controversial subjects are handled humorously and presented in an easily acceptable manner, the protagonist’s attitude—rejecting marriage while wanting only a physical relationship with a woman—makes him appear somewhat similar to his father, who also seems to wander around believing that neither of the two is enough.

Nevertheless, Venky Atluri addresses these subjects in a light-hearted and humorous manner while also delivering several meaningful messages. In particular, dialogues suggesting that anger and hatred eventually become exhausting, that relationships do not necessarily break because of fights but because people no longer know how to communicate afterward, make the audience think.

“To be honest, right from the beginning, I used to keep asking Elan one thing. I would be surprised how he manages to direct a film and act in it at the same time. Because I don’t have that experience.

To that, he would say, ‘I completely immerse myself and act according to the scene we are shooting. At the same time, as a director, I keep clearly in mind what needs to be done.’

In the beginning, we had an important emotional scene. Before that scene, he was very tense. I asked him, ‘Why are you so tense?’ He replied, ‘I am trying to change my face as an actor. But what scene to shoot next is running in my mind.’

After that, he never spoke to me about that matter. But when I observed his functioning throughout the film, I saw that he could easily switch from the director’s state to the actor’s state and back again from actor to director.

He has that level of excellent understanding and presence of mind. This is one of the most important things I learned from him on this journey. Also, in this film, I have completely dubbed in Tamil. This film is very close to me. Just like us, the audience will definitely celebrate this film. Thank you.”
