“Conviction” is the inspirational true story of a sister’s unwavering devotion to her brother. When Betty Anne Waters’ (Hilary Swank) older brother Kenny (Sam Rockwell) is arrested for murder and sentenced to life in 1983, Betty Anne, a Massachusetts wife and mother of two, dedicates her life to overturning the murder conviction. Convinced that her brother is innocent, Betty Anne puts herself through high school, college and, finally, law school in an 18 year quest to free Kenny. With the help of best friend Abra Rice (Minnie Driver), Betty Anne pours through suspicious evidence mounted by small town cop Nancy Taylor (Melissa Leo), meticulously retracing the steps that led to Kenny’s arrest. Belief in her brother – and her quest for the truth – pushes Betty Anne and her team to uncover the facts and utilize DNA evidence with the hope of exonerating Kenny. Oldman and Van Damme joins Kung Fu Panda 2

Dark Horizons reports that Gary Oldman, Michelle Yeoh, Jean Claude Van Damme and Victor Garber have joined the cast of DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom” according to an official press release today. Oldman voices the character of Lord Shen (a peacock), the film’s formidable new villain while Yeoh brings to life the mystical character of The Soothsayer (a goat). Van Damme and Garber round out the cast as Master Croc and Master Thundering Rhino, respectively.

The quartet join returning talent Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross and James Hong in the film which is scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend next year. The sequel will follow Po, the world’s biggest kung fu fan, as he continues his journey as the chosen one who fulfills an ancient prophesy while mastering the art of kung fu.

If you haven’t seen the first one yet I suggest you go see it now! It’s good stuff – even if it’s animated. I promise.

Keanu Reeves to star in Passengers

A couple of days ago I saw the somewhat underrated film “The Gift.” And it is such a pleasure to see Reeves play “the bad guy”… I think this guy should be casted as pure evil more often. He truly has a gift for it. The whole hero thing is kind of old anyway… Anyway, Keanu is up to some new exciting stuff. The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Keanu Reeves has been locked up as the male lead in “Passengers.” His female love interest is still being sought for what the producers short-handed as “Adam & Eve in Space.” The pic also will have a couple of comedic roles and set designs created by some of the wizards who worked on “Avatar.”

Set in the future, “Passengers” centers on Jim Preston (Reeves), a mechanic on a 120-year journey to a distant colonized planet in another galaxy, who becomes the first traveler to experience pod hibernation failure. Having woken up 100 years too soon, he is stranded in the world of an interstellar spaceship with only robots and androids for companionship.

A year into his journey, he decides to wake up a fellow passenger, a beautiful journalist named Aurora. They fall in love but must soon deal not only with the revelation of Jim’s misjudged act of waking her but a major malfunction of the ship itself.

Well doesn’t that sound intriguing? Bring it on!

MIB3 coming May 25th 2012

The guys and girls over at Dark Horizons just announced the release date for a real blockbuster – Sony pictures have informed the press that the third installment of “Men in Black” will be released on May 25th, 2012.

Will Smith has signed on to return as Agent Jay and Tommy Lee Jones is in advanced negotiations to return as Agent Kay in the film which Sony confirmed will be in 3D. Josh Brolin is also in talks to play the younger version of Kay.

Barry Sonnenfeld directs from a script by Etan Cohen and production aims to kick off this Fall. MIB3 will open against Peter Berg’s board game adaptation “Battleship” scheduled to open the same day.

Ouch, I feel for Peter Berg – and even though I’m sure his film will be excellent the MIB franchise is a one big, anticipated mother of a… well, let’s just say MIB has a strong following. But then again, maybe the two can coexist during the first weekend…
