Son Go Ku vs Sun Wu Kong

Kartun has been reliving her childhood and rewatching Dragon Ball. Watching the series now evoked a different feeling than I had then. Then it was more character-based, sometimes I didn’t really understand the content. Now, I marvel at Akira Toriyama’s creactivity - the way he combined humour with action.

As I watch, I can’t help comparing Dragon Ball’s protagonist, Son Go ku to the original Sun Wu Kong from Journey to the West. Just how similar or different are these two characters?

Let’s examine the similarities first:

Both have the same name, whether it’s written in Japanese, Chinese or English.
Both can fly and fly fast!
Both have a tail that resemble that of a monkey’s.
Both uses the Power Pole - which can extend or shorten according to the owner’s wish.
Both follow a few masters - Goku (Muten Roshi, Karin sama, Kami sama & Kaio sama) & Wu Kong (San Zang & a certain fellow who taught him magic)
Both are powerful, skilled in fighting.

Now we look at the differences between the two characters:

There are of course more similarities and differences that Kartun cannot think of. Maybe the reader can suggest?

The Dragon Ball Movie

Hmmm… I’m not sure whether this rumour is true but if it is, what is Hollywood thinking? According to most of the sources, this is only a Dragon Ball movie, not Dragon Ball Z. Which means, no Vegeta, no Cell

Of course, we recognise the “turtle” symbol at his back and the supposedly hmmm… dragon ball on his hand? Gokou is played by an actor called Justin Chatwin (Lost). The rest of the cast are as follows:

Not mentioned in the list of cast is Kuririn, Gokou’s best friend! How can a Dragon ball movie be Dragon Ball without Kuririn. I wonder who’s gonna play that part…

The movie is said to be directed by James Wong and produced by Stephen Chow. It should be in the theatres by April 2009. Although I can’t totally agree with the cast, I don’t think I’m giving this movie a miss. It’s a Dragon Ball movie. Of course kartun will go!

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Three-Disc Collector's Edition)

"Hellboy II: The Golden Army" is visually arresting and packed with interesting characters, though even at two hours its story feels rushed. Ron Perlman's Hellboy -- tasked with stopping an indestructible army led by a vengeance-seeking fairy prince -- seems to race from set piece to set piece, which is a shame given the amount of work that went into creating various locations and creatures. Still, the movie looks great, and moving to the small screen helps disguise less good sequences like the patently back-lot New York City street during a tree god battle.

Though the packaging boasts three discs, the third is a digital copy of the film, leaving the movie and featurettes on what's really two discs. The Collector's Edition also comes with a Golden Army warrior figurine, creature design sketchbook, poster and more.

DVD Bonus Features:

The Good: The Troll Market tour is amazing. A huge amount of work went into creating the set, and director Guillermo del Toro lets no intricate amount of detail go unnoticed. That's enough to make me wish the bulk of the movie had been spent there. Hellboy fans will want to check out "In Service of the Demon," more than two hours of behind-the-scenes documentary (not including the now-standard featurettes on pre- and post-production). More casual viewers will be relieved to know "In Service to the Demon" is broken into short, easily digestible chapters.

The Wackness

Winner of the audience award at Sundance this year was THE WACKNESS, an idiosyncratic coming of age story from writer/director Jonathan Levine.

It’s set in New York in 1994 where hip-hop is raging and Luke, (JOSH PECK), has just finished high school and is whiling away the summer months before going away to college.

He pushes his ice-cream van around the streets dealing dope in a city that Mayor Giuliani is determined to clean up.

One of his more eccentric clients is psychiatrist Dr. Squires, (BEN KINGSLEY), who trades his shrinkage for a quarter of an ounce.

Most of his peers have left the city for the summer but there’s one significant person who has stayed. She’s Squires’s stepdaughter Stephanie, (OLIVIA THIRLBY)

Luke is such a passive creature that he almost sucks the blood out of the early part of the film, but it picks up when he and Stephanie go to Squires’s holiday home on Fire Island for a few days.

Some real emotion enters the film at this point and combined with Squires’s less than satisfactory marriage to Kristin, (FAMKE JANSSEN), the real focus of the film starts to come into play, which is the relationship between Luke and Squires.

The performances are all very fine, but the standout is Ben Kingsley’s Squires. It’s so unexpected. He’s a man in deep pain as Luke will be.

The Wackness has its charms but it has its unevenness too.

Dying Breed

Matt, (LEIGH WANNELL), and his Irish girlfriend, Nina, (MIRRAH FOULKES), accompany Matt’s friend, Jack, (NATHAN PHILLIPS), and HIS girlfriend Rebecca, (MELANIE VELLEJO), on a trip into the Tasmanian interior to hunt for Tasmanian tigers.

Nina has another motive; her older sister drowned on a similar search eight years earlier.

The locals, who are descendents of a cannibalistic convict known as The Pieman, aren’t exactly friendly.

The first requisite for a horror film which places young people in jeopardy is, you would have thought, to make us care about the characters so that when they’re in danger we share their distress. This is a notion alien to director Jody Dwyer and his co-screenwriters Michael Boughen and Rod Morris.

Jack is so odious and obnoxious that he forfeits any sympathy and Matt is a wimp. The women are marginally more interesting, but not enough to encourage you to invest in their plight.
So this poor man’s TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE fails on just about every level. It tries hard to be horrific and gruesome, even introducing a bit of fashionable torture near the end, but only the most credulous will find it genuinely scary.

I enjoy a really good horror film, but DYING BREED is an exceedingly feeble addition to the genre.

Sex Drive

Ian, (JOSH ZUCKERMAN), who lives in the suburbs of Chicago, is still a virgin.

He secretly adores his best female friend, Felicia, (AMANDA CREW), but she resists his shy advances, so, with the encouragement of Lance, (CLARK DUKE), he decides to borrow the prized vintage Pontiac GTO belonging to his overbearing, homophobic brother Rex,(JAMES MARSDEN), to drive 500 miles to Knoxville where a girl he met through the net, Ms Tasty, has promised she’ll go all the way with him if he meets her.

Essentially, this is a re-working of the excellent 1985 Rob Reiner film, THE SURE THING, and while it’s not on the same level as that, it’s often surprisingly funny.

A lot of the jokes and situations are crude, as you’d probably expect from this kind of movie, but the film works as a bit of a guilty pleasure because the three central performances are so good.

JOSH ZUCKERMAN is really quite sweet as the painfully shy Ian and AMANDA CREW is excellent as Felicia who thinks she loves him but doesn’t want to spoil their friendship.

The film is very successful at depicting this all too common and, for teenagers, difficult situation. The third good performance is that of
CLARK DUKE as the seemingly nerdy but actually quite self-confident Lance, and there’s strong support from JAMES MARSDEN as Ian’s horrid big brother and SETH GREEN as an Amish farmer with an interesting approach to life.

Quantum of Solace: The AMG Review

James Bond embraces the Jason Bourne model with Quantum of Solace, a rough-and-tough 007 adventure whose aspirations are admirable, even if the aesthetics are not. Back once again is Daniel Craig as the thuggish brute who pummels his way to solving the mystery continued from the previous installment. Stripped away of nearly every trait that the character has worn so well, this isn't the cinematic Bond of yore, rather a closer fit to the Ian Fleming mold of sophisticated brawler. Tonally, Quantum of Solace is a sobering hangover from the rousing experience of its predecessor. Where there was finely crafted action in the first, in its place are jarring action set pieces where disorienting camera moves and rapid editing rule the school. The days of the series' escapist entertainment are momentarily shelved, thanks to the unsteady hand of indie filmmaker Marc Forster, who seems far out of his league when painting on a canvas this large. What he brings to the table is a yearning to delve more into Bond's psyche -- it's just too bad that he felt the need to ape Mr. Bourne, Bond's cinematic cousin, when it came to crafting its action scenes, of which there are many. Dour, hyper-stylized, and completely gadget-less -- nobody does it better? Not in this case.

We play Sniper Elite...

As you would imagine from the title of the game, Sniper Elite is all about sniping. If you don’t have a good aim, make a lot of noise, can’t shoot, or just don’t snipe for whatever reason, it’s pretty much over for you. If you are able to line up the perfect shot and go for the kill, Sniper Elite will be on the top of your list of most loved games. Sniper Elite is for the serious sniper that has the skills and the guts to finish the job.

The setting: 1945 and you are and American soldier that was trained at the United States Military Academy (West Point). Only the best can get in West Point, and only the best of the best make it out. You are trained, ready for action, and working as an American spy disguised as a German that is working against the Soviet secret service, the NKVD, to keep them from stealing any atomic technology. In easier terms to understand, the Soviet troops are coming and you have to stop them. World War 2 just ended and the Soviets forces main goal is to take control of all of Europe. Your name: Eagle Watch. In your mission of taking out the NKVD you will go through a series of rescues, assassination, intelligence, and many assault missions.

In Sniper Elite, you will be assigned one large overall mission, which will then be broken down into small missions once you have made it to the ground. Based upon what move the enemy makes, conditions will always be changing, and therefore so will your objectives. The individual, smaller missions are even quite lengthy and will capture your attention for a while. Things will move quicker once you have the enemy positions known and memorized.

There are a few things you must decide about yourself as a gamer before purchasing or playing Sniper Elite. You must be excessively patient and be able to sit and concentrate on your target without getting frustrated. You must also realize that you will not be able to spot some of your enemies until they are up on you and shooting already. Your compass has an indicator showing the directions of enemy fire, but it can be extremely vague and difficult to read. Sometimes you will have some leverage from a certain special vantage point you are at, such as a rooftop or apartment window, but most of the time your enemies will attack from nowhere after you have killed a target.

This will undoubtedly get on your nerves to no end, having enemies take you off-guard and there being nothing you can do about it. It is especially difficult and frustrating in upper levels of the game when you don’t have as many lives to spare. This is where common sense and decision making enter the picture, but sometimes even that won’t save you. For example, lets say you blow up a tank, and out of nowhere two soldiers come after. You’re a goner. If you hadn’t blown up the tank, but instead found a different route around, you wouldn’t have gotten spotted and killed. The problem is, there is no possible way to know that until after it’s already happened. Even though this aspect is frustrating and will make you want to cuss out loud, it is interesting and keeps things from getting boring and monotonous.

The arsenal available to you in Sniper Elite is pretty impressive. You will have access to different sniper riles, MG-42’s, silencer pistols like P-38’s, PPSH41’s, and more. Not only will you have guns and pistols, you will have a set of unconventional weapons, like sticks of dynamite, time bombs, trip wire grenades, hand grenades, and other explosives.

You don’t have very quick response time (strange thing for a West Point graduate, huh?) and your weapons take a few seconds before they are ready. The reason is understandable; you must carry all of your large weapons on you and take your pack off every time you wish to switch weapons. This is realistic though; snipers actually do it that way. The only thing here that is inaccurate is the amazing abilities of your enemy to spot you. Remember though, even all of these cool weapons are useless if you leave cover and are spotted.

In Sniper Elite you will be able to switch from playing from the third person view to the first person view by zooming in and out using your controls. Controls can be fully customized and are easy to understand. Even with this, and somewhat because of this, close range combat is not all that and is kind of flawed. Besides that, you’re a sniper, there isn’t supposed to be any close range combat.

Sniper Elite has both LAN and online play. Your character’s appearance can be customized and you have the choice of playing Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, or Assassination modes. The game is much more entertaining and fun when played like this and much better to face a human sniper than computer-controlled enemy that follows a planned artificial pattern.


Graphics in Sniper Elite are actually pretty good		If you like to blow and go throughout an entire game without ever slowing down, don’t even waste your time with this game

Graphics in Sniper Elite are actually pretty good. The surrounding environment is has great texture and is a blended mix of browns, grays, yellows, and greens-just what you would expect from the armed forces. Death animations are very realistic and heads practically snap back when hit straight on with a bullet, making it entertaining to watch them die. There are many smaller visual movements that you will detect, such as rats scurrying about and fluttering papers.

Above all else, Sniper Elite is only for the patient gamer. If you like to blow and go throughout an entire game without ever slowing down, don’t even waste your time with this game, but if you like to watch the rewards of your meticulously calculated homework, then this is definitely the game for you.

Top game moment: Sitting for five or ten minutes just waiting for the perfect moment to blast the Soviet enemy right between the eyes, and then pegging him.

This three-disc set contains 12 episodes of the Fox series about the Griffin clan. Bonuses: TV special, featurettes, favorite scenes, music video, censored audio track, deleted scenes, commentaries.Seth MacFarlane's animated comedy continues its assault on pop culture, good taste, and the Fox censors with its riotous fifth and sixth seasons. Even though nothing has really changed for the Griffin family, there's still plenty of comedic ground to cover. While drunk on communion wine at church, Stewie is thought by the congregation to be possessed, and the Griffins are chased out of town and into Texas. Naruto's pursuit of Sasuke is halted by the most fearsome of the Sound ninja--Kimimaro, a ninja with an uncompromising loyalty to Orochimaru and a hair-raising Kekkei Genkai! But the Leaf Village has sent another able-bodied ninja to assist in the fight, the newly recovered Rock Lee! While the Leaf genin continue their battles against the Sound, Naruto finally catches up to Sasuke at the Final Valley, the legendary site at the border of the Land of Fire. There, Sasuke and Naruto must face each other in their most devastating battle yet, and Sasuke must make a terrible choice in his quest for power that could decide both their destinies!

Even the spunky Naruto, who has faced some of the most terrifying enemies in existence, pauses when he is faced with battling the most fearsome of all Sound Ninja, Kimimaro, who has pledged loyalty to dark ninja Orochimaru and a hair-raising Kekkai Genkai. Luckily, the Leaf Village has sent Rock Lee to help in the battle, which allows Naruto to continue on his quest to find Sasuke to battle it out once and for all. Simon Cowell dumped by girlfriend

American Idol judge and reality TV series mogul Simon Cowell, 49, has been given the boot by his girlfriend of six years, former model Terri Seymour, 34, because they disagreed about having children. Cowell’s publicist, Max Clifford, released a statement that reads: “Terri phoned Simon and finished it in September, about six weeks ago. They are going to remain close friends. Simon thinks the world of Terri and that isn’t going to change. He also understands her reason for ending it. In the past Terri has said that she wants kids but that just isn’t Simon. Nobody else is involved, certainly not on Simon’s side.” According to reports, Cowell bought a $5 million house in Los Angeles for Seymour in appreciation of their time together.

Lesbian doctor leaving Grey’s Anatomy

Brooke Smith, who plays Dr. Erica Hahn on the ABC TV series Grey’s Anatomy, has been let go. Her character first appeared last season, and became a regular this season, indulging in the show’s first lesbian relationship with a newly-divorced character (played by Sara Ramirez). Creator Shonda Rhimes denies that the decision to let Smith go was related to the gay story line, saying in a statement released by ABC: “Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it’s not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show – Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke’s character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie.” Smith’s final episode airs this Thursday.

Hannah Montana episode pulled by Disney

A controversial episode of Hannah Montana has been pulled by the Disney Channel. In the episode, entitled No Sugar, Sugar, Miley (played by Miley Cyrus) has to deal with her friend Oliver’s diabetes diagnosis. The third season episode, which was scheduled to air on November 9, screened early in an on-demand version to parents, according to the New York Daily News. A spokesman said: “During the scriptwriting stage of the Hannah Montana episode in question the matter of depicting a character with diabetes was reviewed by our Standards and Practices executives who consulted with medical experts to inform the story and ensure that it was told responsibly. Notwithstanding the measures we took, and based on the episode’s preview and early feedback from parents, we removed the episode from Sunday’s schedule and are now reevaluating it.” Another episode – Ready, Set, Don’t Drive – has been moved to the November 9 time slot. The story revolves around 15-year-old Miley’s first driving experience.

RocknRolla Movie Synopsis

RocknRolla takes a dangerous ride into high crime and low life in contemporary London, where real estate has supplanted drugs as the biggest market, and criminals are its most enthusiastic entrepreneurs. But for anyone looking to get in—from small-time crook One Two (Gerard Butler) to shady Russian billionaire Uri Obomavich (Karel Roden)—there's only one man to see: Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson).

A mobster from the old school, Lenny knows the right wheels to grease and has his hand on the throat of any bureaucrat, broker or gangster that matters. With one phone call, Lenny can make the red tape disappear. But as Lenny's right-hand man Archy (Mark Strong) tells him, London is ground zero for the changing times, with bigtime mobsters from the East, hungry criminals from the streets, and everyone inbetween, all vying to change the rules of commerce and crime.

With millions up for grabs, all of London's criminal underworld conspires, colludes and collides with one another in an effort to take their cut.
