revealed his fondness for the latest superstar of the tinsel town (something we had predicted almost 2 years back!), Ranbir Kapoor, and the warm vibes that still exist between the two of them.

CHECK OUT: Mere Paas Ranbir Kapoor Hai

Hrithik
spoke about how the two families used to go for holidays together and
that most of the times he had to look after Ranbir who was very small
and also quite a crybaby. This time, the babe with the oomph factor is playing the role of a mentally challenged female.

The film titled SIGNITURE, which has been lying in cans for almost two years and features Shilpa Shetty in an important role is finally gearing up for release. The film is directed by Partho Gosh and it will be Shilpa's first big screen release after her marriage to businessman Raj Kundra.

Though Shilpa has been trying to make a big comeback to films, but it has been largely a difficult task so far. The actress does not have many big offers in her kitty except for being one of the most in-demand face for many big brands.

Well, let's hope Shilpa's mentally challenged act manages to get her more work in an industry that has a very short lived memory.

Imran Khan gets booked

Imran Khan is making waves with his forthcoming film I HATE LUV STORYS. He said, he had completed the entire script, with dialogue, in six days flat. I was apprehensive initially, but not once does Badmaash Company give you the feeling that it's a hurried job or the debutante writer-director, in a bid to start his first film, had left blanks incomplete.

The earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed. The adage holds true for the youth of today, who wish to attain the riches overnight and take an easy route/shortcut to climb the ladder of success. Just when you start thinking that you've conquered it all, that you're God, a stroke of bad luck brings you back to Ground Zero, to experience the harsh realities of life.

Parmeet walks the tight rope of handling a complex subject and offering entertainment simultaneously, in his very first film. To his credit, the film has several poignant and enjoyable moments that catch you by complete surprise. While the film has it all - the writing has the power to keep the viewer hooked - the film has a handicap in the form of its second hour, especially the penultimate 25-odd minutes.

Let me specify! With a running time of approx. 2.30 hours, the extra footage in the end - Shahid and friends trying to salvage his uncle's business - only adds to the length of the enterprise. Ideally, the film should've ended when the friends forgive each other and shake hands, after a series of personal and professional setbacks.

Final word? Badmaash Company is a decent attempt, with several captivating moments and power-packed performances by each and every member of its cast. We often grudge that entertainment-laden films make no sense these days, but this one entertains and also makes sense. Watch it!

Badmaash Company is set in the 1990s in middle class Mumbai, of four ordinary youngsters (Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Meiyang Chang and Vir Das), who came together to start an import business of things longed for by yuppie Indians. What made their venture such a stupendous success was the fact that they found a way to beat the system and soon became the undisputed kings in their business, realizing their one dream of making quick money is by doing all the wrong things the right way.

Living the life of champagne wishes and caviar dreams, the four friends discover that to make a business successful, you don't need big money. All you need is a big idea. All is well and hunky dory till one day the four maverick entrepreneurs are forced to shut shop.

The best thing about Badmaash Company is that you identify with the mindset of those who aspire to reach the pinnacle of success using shortcuts. The scams and the con games the youth indulge in are easy to decipher and least complicated, which works in its favour. Another strong point is the camaraderie that the four actors share on screen. The film would've fallen flat if the chemistry was missing, but the bonding looks so real that you forget that they are merely enacting those roles.

Badmaash Company has some terrific moments. The sequences in Bangkok are enjoyable. Ditto for the showdown between the friends in the post-interval hour. The transformation in Shahid's persona is also beautifully depicted. But, like I pointed out at the outset, the second hour tends to get repetitive and the penultimate 25-odd minutes are a strict no-no.

Pritam's music is foot-tapping and almost every song has been filmed very well. Sanjay Kapoor's cinematography is just right.

Every actor puts his best foot forward in Badmaash Company. Shahid gets it right yet again. It wouldn't be erroneous to say that this is amongst his finest works. Watch him blow his lid in the restaurant sequence and also in another sequence, when he meets a pregnant Anushka. He is confidence personified in those sequences.

Anushka is a revelation. She looks stunning, her performance is livewire and the chemistry with Shahid is electrifying. Strangely, she took a backseat after her debut in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, but Badmaash Company will bring her back in public eye. Vir Das is another surprise. He's in terrific form here. The film marks the 'birth' of another talent - Meiyang Chang - who adds a lot of freshness and zing to his character. Anupam Kher is wonderful. It has to soar higher than the hits delivered by this trio. Anything less will just not do!

The million dollar question is, does Kites fly high? Let me hit the nail on the head: The film has some terrific moments and of course, Hrithik Roshan's star power to cast a spell, but it has plenty of low moments. In fact, Kites could've been a cult film, but its writing relies too heavily on clichés and formulaic stuff and that, frankly, throws a spanner.

Kites is visually stunning and makes a sweeping impact, but it totters in its writing department. The story bears an uncanny resemblance to K. Balachander's Ek Duuje Ke Liye, Tony Scott's Revenge and Rakesh Roshan's very own Koyla. Also, the story hardly moves in the first hour, but gets into the groove towards the second hour. Of course, you might grumble that the film gets very 'Bollywoodish' at times, but the negatives and blemishes get camouflaged, at times, by that one name that spells magic: Hrithik Roshan.

Final word? Kites will meet with diverse reactions, but the one unanimous thing that it will gather in abundance would be the immense praise for this matchless actor called Hrithik Roshan. He alone is worth the price of the ticket and more. Wish I could say that for the film in entirety!

In the harsh terrain of the Mexican desert, a wounded man is left for dead in the heat of the desert sun. This is J (Hrithik Roshan), once a street-smart, carefree, young guy and now a wanted man. The only thing that keeps him alive is the quest to find the love of his life, Natasha (Barbara Mori). A woman, engaged to another man, but surely destined for J. A woman, who comes into his life like a bolt of lightning and changes it forever.

Kites is stylish and slick, filmed like any international film. In fact, I am dead sure, the intention is to go beyond the diaspora and cut across to an audience that still thinks that Bollywood is the usual song-n-dance routine merely. The film has an eclectic first hour, even though the pacing is sluggish and there's not much movement in the story. But the post-interval portions are erratic; it keep you hooked at places, it slips at times.

Kites is desi at heart, but also takes a few steps that might be considered risky by Bollywood standards. The leading lady speaks in Spanish and the makers have used sub-titles for people to comprehend. This, very frankly, might not go down too well with the traditional audiences. The second aspect that catches you completely unaware is the finale, which, though amazingly shot, will have its share of advocates and adversaries. Some may like it, while some may argue, not done!

But without revealing much, I admit that the end is not formulaic at all. Given the fact that Bollywood wants to play safe all the while, most storytellers tend to follow the tried and tested rules of the game, but the finale is truly emotional and befits a love story by all means.

Anurag Basu has proved his mettle in the past and although this may not be the most cohesive script he has worked on, there's no denying that Kites keeps you involved at places. Note the sequence when Hrithik sets his eyes on Barbara for the first time. Or the intro of Kangana Ranaut's bro Nicholas Brown. Or the finale, of course.

But the writing could've been tighter. Kangana has a half-baked track. The culmination to Nicholas Brown's track looks convenient. There's no mention of Kabir Bedi - the most influential man - after a point. The couple's encounters with the American police look ludicrous. These weigh the film down, honestly.

Rajesh Roshan's music is strictly okay. The score isn't a patch on this combo's (Rakesh Roshan and Rajesh Roshan) earlier works. However, Salim-Sulaiman's background score compliments the style and composition of sequences and truly appears as an international score. Ayananka Bose's cinematography is splendid. The chase sequences are awe-inspiring, especially the one when car after car is smashed into smithereens.

Hrithik is unbeatable and that's the truth. Very few actors can rise above the script and Hrithik is one of them. He's the lifeline of this film. Barbara Mori looks perfect for her part, but appears slightly mature at places. Nonetheless, the chemistry between Hrithik and Barbara is electrifying. Kangana is wasted. Kabir Bedi does a decent job. Nicholas Brown, as Kangana's brother and Barbara's fiancé, is top notch and adds a lot of freshness to the film.
 Read:
On the whole, Kites has style, visuals and Hrithik Roshan as its trump cards, but its content leaves a lot to be desired. The film has evoked tremendous curiosity, which will translate into great numbers in its initial week. The wide release, the number of shows at every cineplex and lack of any film opposition will help the film set new records

initially, but the huge costs on the other hand will play a spoilsport.

Director - Anurag Basu
Cast - Hrithik Roshan, Kangana Ranaut, Barbara Mori, Kabir Bedi, Nick Brown, Yuri Suri

Raajneeti - Review

I've never really followed politics. But I am truly fascinated by 'Mahabharata'. Lord Krishna, Arjun, Karan, Bheema, Duryodhan... are legendary and the clash between Pandavas and Kauravas is equally unforgettable. Prakash Jha's Raajneeti talks of warring cousins, dynastic rule and electoral politics of the Hindi heartland, besides the vicious and horrifying games some people play to attain power.

To me, Raajneeti is a human drama, a complex game that people indulge in to achieve power and how this greed envelopes them and transforms them into ruthless and conniving humans. I admit, it takes time for the story to sink in, but slowly and steadily, you get sucked into a world that's dark, dangerous and demonish. The attire may be white, but the deeds are grey or black.

Raajneeti is not only 'Mahabharata', but also 'Godfather'. Despite knowing 'Mahabharata' or 'Godfather', one is not able to presume what games the present-day Pandavas and Kauravas would play in Raajneeti. In fact, the story alters constantly, unravelling in a serpentine manner and speed... so much so that you don't know what's gonna happen next. It keeps you awed at the constant turn of events. Clearly, unpredictability is the biggest strength of Raajneeti. Yet, let me clarify, this is not a documentary, tetchy or preachy film. This one not only entertains, but also enlightens.

The flipside? None, actually. The naysayers may point out that the subject material is 'heavy', 'serious' and 'dry', but you ought to know that when you adapt 'Mahabharata' in the current milieu (present-day politics), you can't expect 'item songs' and 'slapdash humour and mimicry', for God's sake. These naysayers may also state that the running time (almost 3 hours) is a no-no in today's times, but let's not forget that even 3 hours is too short a duration for a good film and vice-versa, even an hour is too lengthy for a terrible film. Raajneeti is a genuinely good product, so you definitely don't mind its length. But one thing is for sure: Raajneeti doesn't cater to an audience that keeps its brains at home while watching a film. You need to be alert while watching this one.

Final word? Prakash Jha, the persona, is known for qualitative cinema and Raajneeti, his new offering, stands tall on the list. Cinema

is all about narrating interesting stories on celluloid and for that very reason, Raajneeti deserves distinction marks. Of course, the massive star cast and the sparkling performances are the icing on the cake.

I strongly advocate this film. Do yourself a favour: Watch Raajneeti.

Bhaskar Sanyal (Nasseruddin Shah), the fire-brand leftist leader, is feared for his single-handed ability to challenge the most powerful of leaders. Until one private mistake of his hurtled him into a self-imposed exile.

Cut to the present day. Prithvi (Arjun Rampal) is the heir to a powerful political legacy and impatient to seize the top position. But his cousin, Veerendra (Manoj Bajpayee), proves his biggest political opponent. He's a man who believes he was born to rule and who will now stop at absolutely nothing to claw his way back to the top.

Cornered by family and political colleagues, Veerendra plays a new game: He picks up Sooraj (Ajay Devgn), a youngster with anger in his heart and leadership on his mind. Sooraj doesn't know the secret behind his identity, which, of course, is revealed much, much later.

Prithvi's brother Samar (Ranbir Kapoor) is an 'outsider', with no political aspirations, but he gets sucked into the battle-ravaged arena of family rivalry. Only to turn into a master of the craft of political warfare. Indu (Katrina Kaif), daughter of a wealthy industrialist, is also caught in this web. Last but not the least, there's Brij Gopal (Nana Patekar), who plays the role of mentor and guide to Prithvi and Samar as the battle gets bloodier by the day.

It requires courage to assemble a mammoth, ensemble cast, pick a story that does justice to each character and give the film the feel of an epic. Also, you ought to have comprehensive knowledge of the subject material - politics, in this case. And for all these and more Prakash Jha deserves all the praise possible. He knows the territory like the back of his hand, having observed the political culture very closely. Like I said at the outset, every character in Raajneeti is grey or black, not squeaky clean at all.

At an edited length of almost 3 hours, Raajneeti keeps the viewers glued to the goings-on for start to end. Anjum Rajabali and Prakash Jha's screenplay brings to the fore the ugly face of democracy most realistically and convincingly. The constant twists-n-turns in the story, the characters who change colours faster than chameleons and the blood-bath they indulge in are the highpoints of this film. In fact, there are sequences that merit brownie points, but it wouldn't be ethical to reveal them here since that would rob the fun while watching the film.

If the screenplay is watertight, the dialogue are equally remarkable. Every line is soaked in acid and only enhances the impact of several sequences. There's no scope for music in the film and the songs, including the hugely popular 'Mora Piya', are interspersed briefly in the narrative. Cinematography is top notch. Raajneeti is not an easy film to shoot, given the fact that there are more than 3 or 4 actors in every frame, besides a massive crowd of course.

To slot Raajneeti as a multi-starrer film would be erroneous. It's a multi-actor film and every actor delivers a sparkling performance. The film has some of the biggest names in the business, but the ones who stand out are Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Manoj Bajpayee. Ranbir surprises you with every film. Here's an actor who can give the best in the business sleepless nights. Arjun is a revelation and what a terrific performance he pitches in. He's like an untamed lion. Manoj delivers his career-best performance. He plays the evil part superbly.

Ajay Devgn is sidelined in the second hour, but you need to give it to the actor for accepting and enacting his part with complete conviction. Nana Patekar is brilliant. He utters the most acidic lines with a smile, which only an actor of calibre could've achieved. Actually, you can't imagine anyone else in this role. Katrina Kaif is first-rate. The sincerity and earnestness shows in every sequence. She sheds her glam doll image and transforms into an actor with this film. Nasseruddin Shah, in a brief role, does well. Sarah is good.

The film has a number of talented names in supporting roles and each remain etched in your memory, especially Dayashanker Pandey, Chetan Pandit, Darshan Jariwala, Shruti Seth, Kiran Karmarkar and Vinay Apte. Nikhila Trikha, as Arjun and Ranbir's mother, is admirable.

On the whole, Raajneeti makes a sweeping impact. A truly admirable effort, this brilliant film is not to be missed.

Producer - Prakash Jha
Director - Prakash Jha
Cast - Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgn, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif

, Manoj Bajpai, Arjun Rampal, Nasseruddin Shah

movie :The Camp - Review

The film is an experience of a group of kids along with their camp instructor at a site, far away from the city. The film begins with these kids and the instructor going camp hopping and playing around, having fun when they get an unfortunate surprise.

Buzz up!
The film is a collection of events experienced by the kids and the instructor along with two goons, who are trying to kidnap a child from the group. The goons are shown as dangerous but silly. After a few attempts, they finally succeed in kidnapping the child, which results in an attempt to rescue the kid. Somehow the goon-comedy reminds us of the goon duo in the famous series Home Alone.

The film starts with a good story line with the instructors teaching the kids rock climbing, trekking, tying knots etc. The activities of the goons succeed in tickling our funny bones. But slowly the story becomes monotonous and predictable.

Some of the scenes in the film do not make sense at all and seem to be forced. Sonali, being a camp instructor, was expected to look a little more fitter, but acting comes naturally to her. The kids have also done a fair job.

The music of the film is decent but one might just lose track, once out of the theater. However, the peppy song by Shaan proves to be an exception. The background score of the film lacks originality too!

All in all, it is an average film. A bit of extra knowledge along with a touch of motivation for the kids is the basic idea behind the film. Nothing extraordinary to look out for, from this one!

Producer: Sudesh R. Bhosle
Director: Nitin Mahadar
Cast: Sonali Kulkarni, Rakesh Bedi, Sanjay Mishra, Suresh Chatwal, Krishna Bhatt

<media:rating>nonadult</media:rating>
