Elevator Moving Tips

As most local Cincinnati movers do, we charge an hourly rate for our services. Contrary to what many thing, elevators make a move slower. If you think about it, an elevator is slow. You have to wait for the door to open, load everything on, wait for it to close, wait for it to get to the right door, wait for the doors to open again and then wait to take everything off. That is a lot of wasted time.

The best way to make an elevator move more affordable is to make it more efficient. You can do that with some simple planning and a few tips from us.

Plan your move for a weekday. Typically there are less people in the elevators, hallways and parking lot to get in your movers way and slow things down.
Contact the building manager and ask if there is a loading dock or elevator that is to be used by the movers.
If the movers need to go through a secured entrance, make arrangements for us to have access.
Reserve the elevator. Sharing an elevator with other services or residents will really slow down your move.
Make sure you have the elevator key, this allows us to lock the doors open rather than needing someone to hold it open.
Hire a 3 man crew. This makes things go faster because on can stay on the loading floor, one on the unloading floor and keep working while the third rides with the elevator and helps whoever needs it.

Now you just need to rent a truck. Most rental companies price their trucks by size. The bigger the truck, the more they charge. What the average consumer doesn't know is that a 14' truck doesn't always mean they are getting a 14' truck.

Here are a few notes about how we ranked them...

All sizes are approximate and based on published sized found on rental truck websites
U-Haul measures length across the roof while other companies measures across the floor. Since you should never put things on the roof of a moving truck, we have listed the floor measurements.
U-Haul trucks usually have the metal "humps" (shown in the picture above) in the floor for the wheel wells and fuel line. This takes up a lot of floor space
Local U-Haul rentals have other equipment attached to the wall (shown in the picture above) that also takes up space. If you remove it they will charge you a rental fee for that equipment
U-Haul trucks do have a "Mom's Attic" that we did not include in the measurements as it is only suitable for small/light items.
Penske trucks are rarely more than 2-3 years old. Their box sizes may differ slightly as they are constantly improving their design.

The moving season is over and its that time of year again where the best movers in Cincinnati get to sleep in some.

For safety reasons our goal is to have your move done before sunset. Large moves should be planned accordingly.

Our movers completed HUNDREDS of moves this year so we think they deserve a bit of a break. We will keep this schedule over the slower winter hours and then in the spring go back to our normal, dawn to dusk schedule.

Biofuel in Cincinnati

Moving companies have big moving trucks. Those big moving trucks large amounts of fuel and add a lot of pollution to the environment. We buy carbon offsets from Trees For the Future and TerraPass to make up for that but the best solution would be if we didn't use as much fossil fuels or expel as many pollutants in the first place.

One way we are a green moving company is that we use biodiesel as often as possible. Unfortunately most of the biodiesel available in Cincinnati is only sell B5 (5% bio and 95% regular diesel). Those stations are also not very convenient so it represents a significant logistics problem for us with little return.

We know that there are a lot of people out there that would love to have their movers in Cincinnati be more environmentally responsible and we are hoping you can help.

There is no such thing as a $19.95 U-Haul Rental

As Cincinnati's only mover that is also ALMPA certified we work with all the truck rental companies. Recently the Boston Globe published a story about a man that was treated pretty badly by UHaul. (The Boston Globe website is membership only but you can read a repeat of the The U-Haul Story on Boston.com)

We will give you a quick run down of the story online. A customer made a reservation for 24 hours on U-Hauls website. He then called twice to confirm the reservation. When he arrived to pick up his truck he was told it was a 12 hour rental and that he would be charged $100 for ever hour he was late. That would make his 24 hour rental that was supposed to be $19.95 actually cost $1200.

The story goes on to report that this was NOT an isolated incident. The Boston Globe reporter wrote "On Friday, I counted a half-dozen complaints similar to [the customer's]. It was hard to get an accurate number of such complaints, because some of them were deleted from the website as the day wore on."

On U-Hauls own website other customers were reporting similar problems as fast as the UHaul web lackeys could delete those bad reviews!

Lets stop and review. If this were true it would mean that U-Haul overcharges hundreds of customers every day and then covers it up!!! And what is the point in having reviews if U-Haul deletes the ones it doesn't like?

We recommend Penske Truck Rental for a reason and this is just one of them. If for some reason you have to rent a U-Haul truck here are a few tips for you.

1) Use a Pre-paid credit card - Search the web and you will find MANY reports of U-Haul charging a customer's credit card much more than the customer agreed to. You can buy prepaid credit cards at most gas stations for about $5. Then you don't have to worry about U-Haul or some scammer at an old car lot that is temporarily a U-Haul location having your credit card number.

2) Rent ONLY from a corporate location - A corporate location is one owned by U-Haul and run by U-Haul employees. The reasons are to many to list but think of it this way. When you are another customer that has a problem with U-Haul, do you want it to be dealing with some guy at a cheap car lot or an actual U-Haul employee?

3) Call to confirm your reservation - UHaul will call you the day before but that comes from a call center. Call the actual location you want to pick up from 48 hours before your moving help is scheduled to arrive.

4) Ask to pick up as soon as the location opens - Look around the web and you will find many reports of U-Haul purposefully overbooking trucks. Many suspect that they book 2-3 customers for every 1 available truck. If you get their first, their is less chance U-Haul will give your truck to someone else.

6) Don't buy any U-Haul supplies - U-Haul moving boxes and supplies are much more expensive than other local alternatives like TreeFree Boxes and even your local Home Depot sells moving supplies now.

Leaving a long known home

We can all imagine how hard it would be to move out of a home where you have lived 20, 30, even 50 years. A senior moving from their long known home and neighborhood to a smaller apartment and new community can be quite a transition.

Any new home requires a mental and emotional adjustment. The longer you have lived in your previous home, the longer the adjustment will take. Typically this is 3 months to 1 year.

Questions to ask when hiring a Moving Company

We hear on the news all the time about the illegal movers that offer cheap prices to move people and then a family is out hundreds if not thousands of dollars when things go bad. Here are a few questions for you to ask when you call a mover

What is your company's "Household Goods Mover" License number? Illegal companies often make up a number or give you an invalid one so make sure you ask for their "Household Goods Moving License number". Then check with your state to verify it. If you are looking for movers in Cincinnati or anywhere in Ohio check the Public Utility Commision of Ohio. If the number isn't valid, report them
Is your company insured as a "Household Goods Mover"? That phrase is a legal thing and makes a HUGE difference in the coverage they have. Anything less and they may be illegal movers.
Are there any items you charge extra for or do not move? Some moving companies charge charge extra for things like flat screen TVs. Others may not move things like grand pianos or pool tables.
Does your company provide an in-home moving quote? You wouldn't expect a mechanic to give you a set price over the phone for a large repair. If a moving company offers a price over the phone for a large move, you should be cautious.
Are there any extras that can be incurred during the move? Many moving moving companies claim to be cheap movers but then hit you with a lot of extra hidden fees and extra charges. They charge extra for elevators, fuel, travel, blankets and more.
How much of a deposit do you require? Most companies do require a deposit but if they ask for a large portion of their estimate in advance, be wary.
Does the company charge extra to move on the weekend? Friday-Sunday are the most sought after moving days and many companies charge extra for those.

How to recognize scam movers

There are a lot of Cincinnati movers that are actually cheap, illegal movers. We were having a discussion in our office about this and we came up with a few ways for a normal person to know if they are talking to a scam mover.

Their price is less than half of a real movers - Pricing between moving companies should not vary that much. If a cheap mover gives you price that is too good to be true, it really is to good to be true. Cheap movers quote prices a lot lower than everyone else. Then when they have your belongings they insist on more money. Often their final price is double or triple from what they quoted!
They won't put anything in writing - You have the right to a written quote. If they don't give you a guaranteed price, call another mover.
They say they don't need to see your home for a long distance move - Then on the day of pick up you are told that your move is larger than you told them on the phone and they are raising your price.
They demand a large deposit in advance - Real movers require a small deposit. This is typically a fixed amount ($50) or a percentage of your quote (10%)
They only take cash - Legitimate movers realize that most people are not comfortable handing out thousands of dollars in cash. As an alternative they accept checks or credit cards
They will not give a specific load and unload time - Things like traffic, weather and other unforeseen circumstances can slow down a move. Still, reputable movers have other work and want to keep a schedule. Most give a window for their arrival "We will be there Friday between 8am and noon."

Every customer has rights! Legal movers follow the rules and will help you learn about your rights. If you suspect you have found a cheap, scam mover here is what you can do

Check their local licensing. Most states have a licensing system (in Ohio real movers have a license number from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio)
Check out their Federal FMCSA Safety and Fitness Electronic Records. There you can search by company name or license #. It lists their registered information and safety information. This tells you that they have a valid licens and insurance.

Paying the Price for Hiring Cheap Movers

A sting on several illegal and cheap movers.

There are a lot of cheap movers our there offering prices that seem to good to be true. Well they are to good to be true.

Being a professional and legal mover means you have some expenses. Now there is nothing wrong with the guys who advertise on Craigslist that they are the cheapest in town and run around in old UHaul trucks. Well, except for they are operating illegally.

On the right side of this page you will see our PUCO number and our USDOT number.

The US Department of Transportation and the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio require LEGAL moving companies to post our moving license numbers in every advertisement. We post them proudly because we aren't cheap, illegal movers.

Recently one customer told us that when she called a local cheap mover and asked for his PUCO number he supplied her with a PUCO license. She was smart enough to look it up on the PUCO website and find out they were lying.

If they would deceive their own customers, are cheap movers really such a great deal? Do a Google search and you will find there are a lot of good reasons not to make how "cheap" a moving company is a reason for hiring them.

Packing your belongings is one of the most difficult and time-consuming elements of the moving process. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task, but these helpful tips can ease your packing blues and help you set things in motion.

Create a Packing Strategy

Having a good plan always lowers the stress level. Decide what rooms you will pack first, and then make a schedule to follow.

If you can, start packing early. Begin with the least-used items, and try to complete a few boxes per day.

Pack on a room-by-room basis. Keeping items from each room separate will simplify unloading the boxes.

Keep an inventory as you pack. Number the boxes per room and make a list of the major contents of each box.

Get Organized

Put your important documents in a water tight box. Here are some documents to include:

School records

Home purchase/sale papers

Marriage/divorce papers

Pet documents

Financial records

Packing Right

Knowing how to pack specific items can save you time—and help ensure each item arrives at the new house safe and sound.

Hang ironed or dry-cleaned clothes in wardrobe cartons to avoid the hassle of pressing them after the move.
Empty the drawers in a piece of furniture before moving the piece itself.
When you are packing fragile articles, place heavy objects toward the bottom of the carton and more delicate articles near the top.
Cups and glasses may be stacked and wrapped three or four to a bundle. Place small pieces of paper between each item for added protection.
Pack your kitchen breakables near the top of boxes that hold your other dishes.
Pack tall table lamps in sturdy dish pack cartons. Wrap the base of the lamp well and fill in the box with wadded-up packing paper. Pack the lampshade by itself, if possible.
Small pictures can be wrapped and stood up in normal packing boxes with other goods.
Extremely large pictures should be packed in specially designed picture or mirror cartons.
Toys and loose shoes do not have to be wrapped in packing paper. Place them in large cartons and seal them up.
Books and records should be stood on end and packed in small cartons.

Hiccups

This morning our hosting company had a slight hiccup which caused our website to go down for a short time.

First of all, great thanks to GoDaddy.com. They have real live people that speak English somewhere here in America and you can call them for help anytime, night or day.

After entering the right set of numbers I was on hold for less than 2 minutes before I was put through to a very capable tech named Jonathan. From there he would put me on hold to check things and then come back every few minutes to let me know he was still working on the problem. It did take them about 25 minutes to get things fixed but we are back up and running well.

Beware Of Illegal Movers

Moving season is almost upon us and once again the cheap and illegal movers are popping up all over Cincinnati wanting to move you cheap.

We wanted to offer you a few suggestions to avoid being scammed by illegal movers

Check their registration with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. Cheap movers will provide other numbers trying to confuse you. You can search the PUCO website to verify they are licensed in the state of Ohio.
Avoid hiring a mover solely based on the cheapest price. A low bid is no way to determine quality or reliability.
Try to deal with a moving company that has a physical office and warehouse in Cincinnati. Many illegal companies use the addresses of old abandoned buildings or store fronts.
If paying a fixed or flat rate, NEVER pay a deposit before you receive a a written estimate. Verbal estimates are not binding. You want a "binding estimate".
If moving long distance, avoid any mover who refuses to come out and physically look at your belongings to get a good idea of what your families needs are.
Ask if they use employees or subcontractors. You are safer hiring a moving company that uses employees. If they show up without uniforms, send them away.
Ask for proof of their liability coverage and workers' compensation insurance.
Look for red flags, Illegal companies often are cheap because they use UHaul trucks or have employees that don't speak English very well.

Are You Moving A Pack Rat?

The holidays are over and many of us have more junk now than just a few short months ago. While it is easy for us to do some cleaning out and giving away, a "pack rat" cannot. A pack rat's house or apartment often looks like a storage space after a magnitude 7 earthquake. Everywhere you look there are piles of clothing, old electronics and newspapers or books. Stacked from floor to ceiling are piles of things that most people would throw away. Even the car of a pack rat looks like mobile storage.

To a pack rat these are prized possessions. Pack rats have connection to things that the rest of us don't understand and would never let them be hauled away. Moving a pack rat in Cincinnati can be the biggest challenge for their families and the movers that load and unload a pack rat. Deciding to keep or give away every item in the home is a new battle.

Here are 10 tips for moving a pack rat:

Take responsibility. - You will notice we say things like "moving your pack rat" a lot. One of the best ways to deal with a pack rat is to think of him/her as your responsibility. How much will fit? - Many pack rats are downsizing. Often their uncontrolled spending has put them in a financial bind and they have no choice but to change their living situation. Call your pack rat ahead of time and make sure they understand that they understand anything that doesn't fit will get thrown away.
Get rid of a LOT! - So you have decided what absolutely has to go. There is still to much stuff though. Pack rats have more belongings than they will ever need or use but they refuse to let go of anything. The challenge is trying to convince a pack rat to throw away or donate something several times when moving into a new home. One good way is to find a pack rat a charity or cause they believe in and donate items to that. Something that will help them feel like their valuables are going for a good cause.
How much does a pack rat cost? - The cost of a pack rat is often higher than the cost of of a normal move because of all the extra work. You need to be prepared for the additional costs of extra moving boxes and any additional time or weight the moving company will have to add. The less items there are to move, the less the movers or storage unit will cost.
How safe are pack rats? - Moving a pack rat may be a strain on your your brain and personality but it can also be a real risk to your physical health. A pack rat’s home truly is a dangerous place. Obstacles that could be tripped over, piles of unknown objects that may come crashing down and then they are often very filthy. We often find soiled clothing, medical supplies, broken or sharp objects and more. We always advise wearing gloves and safety glasses when dealing with a pack rat.
Write out an organization plan. - Pack rats claim that their mess is organized but no one else can see it. The best way to deal with this is write out a plan of how to organize your pack rat and have everyone sign it. Make sure they sign it because you will need to go over the agreement at some point with your pack rat.
Dealing with inaction. - Pack rats feel a strong connection to the items they have hoarded that no one else will understand. A pack rat may truly want to move away and start fresh. Still, the idea of losing control over their belongings often will paralyze them. They are simply overwhelmed and unable to help. The best way to handle this is stay calm and constantly emphasize the importance of what they are doing. Mention how much this will improve their lives and how proud you are that they are doing this. A pack rat needs positive support, criticism only makes them feel more helpless and fight for more control.

What To Do When It Snows On Moving Day

Snow happens. When you plan your move around one day in the middle of winter you should have a plan for what to do if it snows. Here are a few tips about how you can move when its snowing.

Call your movers to make sure they’re coming. If there is a snow emergency it may be illegal for them to be on the road
Shovel your driveway and salt it well the before the movers arrive. This means shoveling more than just a path!
Shovel and salt any walkways and stairs
Ask you movers about shrink wrapping your furniture or providing mattress boxes. Mattress bags are not very useful because they tear easily, ask about mattress boxes.
Provide floor runners or ask your mover to. This may cost you extra because they are very expensive. It is worth the expensive to keep the snow, salt and grime off your floors
Offer room temperature water. Even when its cold we work up a sweat but cold water just makes us colder.
Trim any tree branches that may hang low because of snow or ice. Make sure the truck can back all the way into your driveway.
If street plowing has blocked your driveway call your movers ASAP!
Don't forget to check all the same things at your new home!

Winter makes moving harder and needs extra preparation. No one wants to cancel a move because your home is not ready or even dangerous.

Before you close up that ABF trailer

ABF trailers present special challenges for you and your movers. Here are a few things we have learned as the most experienced moving labor in Cincinnati.

Plan to be there when ABF delivers your trailer or ReloCube. Typically ABF gives a delivery window and we have found they are often late so plan to leave the entire day open.
You will need to show the driver where you want the trailer parked and sign his paperwork. Make sure no vehicles or obstacles are within 100 feet of where you want it left so the driver has plenty of room.
Check the trailer or ReloCube for cleanliness and leaks before the driver leaves.
If a trailer, make sure you understand how much space you have reserved. The wall of the trailer is typically marked every 2 feet.
Check every room, closet and cabinet one last time before deciding everything is loaded.
If loading an ABF trailer, secure the bulkhead once your belongings are loaded.
Verify the destination address and your contact information is correct on your paperwork.
Make sure you write the number of linear feet or number of ReloCubes you loaded on your paperwork. This is how ABF decides how much to charge you.
Call ABF and let them know everything is ready to be picked up!

Even though we are movers, we are like everyone else. We moved into our new office a few weeks ago and we are still unpacking.

While unpacking we noticed we have quite a few awards and certifications. Now having much more room than before so we decided to start an "Awards Wall".
