Bayern München wins UEFA Champions League Final from a last minute goal

The UEFA Champions League 'All German' final was a thriller till the last minute at Wembley last night.

Having had a goalless first half, Mandzukic struck in the 60th minute for Bayern München - but it was very soon equalized by Gundogan in the 67th minute on a penalty. There after, both teams tried their best to score one more goal to clinch the trophy - but it did not seem to be forthcoming till the very end.

And when it came in the 89th minute by Robben, the entire crowd at Wembley burst with a big roar - and Munich claimed the much coveted Champions League trophy.

The tournament's recent history has offered little other than unrelenting misery for Robben and Bayern München - but the agony is over after a colourful, enthralling final that confirmed Germany as the new power base of European domestic football.

Bayern München had lost two finals in three years, including defeat on penalties to Chelsea in their own Allianz Arena 12 months ago, but on this occasion they cast off the tag of losers to claim the crown for the fifth time.

It may be added that only Real Madrid (nine) and AC Milan (seven) have won this tournament more times and the taste of victory was even sweeter for 29-year-old Robben and veteran Bayern München coach Jupp Heynckes, who steps aside to hand over to Pep Guardiola at the end of this season.

The French Open Commences Sunday 26 May - Nadal and Djokovic for Semis Collision Course

French Open or the Roland Garros - the second Grand Slam of the year commences at Paris from Sunday 26 May 2013.

With Andy Murray, the world no.2 from Britan and Juan Martin del Potro from Argentina already out of the tournament due to back injury and viral infection respetively, the choice for the top eight is rather limited.

As for the main contenders, world no.1 Novak Djokovic and world no.5 and the defending champion Rafael Nadal, they both happen to be in the same side and are likely to clash in the semis before either moves up for the final.

The placement should be a big sigh of relief for the world no.3 Swiss Roger Federer, who also is the 2009 champion. He is very likely to be the there in the final waiting either Djokovic or Nadal. Though, Federer has been unable to win any major tournament this year, the aging tennis star, nearing his 32nd birthday, looks confident to make headlines this year.

As for the ladies, Serena and defending champion Maria Sharapova are the likely contenders for the final - but Sharapova has been more of a disappointing for her fans as whenever she faces the American, all her energies seem to sap and she gives away much to easily. And i Am keeping my fingers crossed for former world no.1 Victoria Azarenka.

So here it is - the long awaited UEFA Champion League Final at Wembley.

Ahead of the Champions League final, Borussia Dortmund manager Jürgen Klopp believes the 'all-German' Champions League final at Wembley will be a "special" occasion.

"If this is my only final and I die in 60 years, it won't have been so bad," said Klopp.

Thomas Müller, the Munich forward, when was asked to assess his team’s deficiencies, said: “I can’t say we have a feeling that we have any weakness. We have played a lot of games without any goals being scored against us.”

80-year-old Japanese daredevil becomes oldest atop Mount Everest

Eighty years old Japanese Yuichiro Miura, who had scaled Mount Everest at age 70 and 75, could not resist going back to Everest even at 80 to become the oldest man atop world's highest mountain in Nepal.

When Miura reached the 29,035-foot peak Thursday morning 23 May, he called his Tokyo-based support team with the news.

"I made it!" Miura said over the phone, according to the Associated Press. "I never imagined I could make it to the top of Mt. Everest at age 80. This is the world's best feeling, although I'm totally exhausted. Even at 80, I can still do quite well."

It may be added for information that Miura skied down Everest's South Col in 1970. The feat is the subject of the Oscar-winning 1975 documentary, “The Man Who Skied Down Everest.”

Following Britain's Andy Murry's annoucement to pull out of French Open due to back injury, Juan Martin del Potro too has decided no to go to Paris as he is suffering from a virus.

The former US Open champion from Argentina disclosed his skipping of Paris after losing to Frenchman Benoit Paire in the Rome Masters last week.

It may be added that former world number seven Mardy Fish, 41st in the rankings, and his fellow American Brian Baker, 71st, have also pulled out of French Open.

Australia Announces Women's Ashes squad - Including Ellyse Perry

Australia yesterday announced the 15-member women's Ashes squad. The squad contains 10 of the 11 players who won the World Cup final for Australia in February.

The Ashes squad also includes Australian fast bowler Ellyse Perry which will participate in the Ashes series in England starting 11 August later this year.

22-year-old Perry recently had surgery on an ankle injury and then contracted an infection which made her a doubt for the series.

It may be added that for the first time the Ashes will be contested over all formats of the game.

The highest points total after one Test, three one-day internationals and three Twenty20s will win the Ashes, with Australia the current holders of the urn.

Andy Murray Not Going to Paris for French Open

It may come as a demoralizing news for Murray's fans world wide, specially in the UK, but it is the reality: Andy Murray is not going to Paris to play the French Open owing to his back injury.

The world no.2 and darling of the British crowd, who made his presence felt in the last year's US Open and Olympics, retired in his first match in Rome due to back injury and pain as was evident from his face.

"It's been a really tough decision, and I love playing in Paris, but after seeking medical advice I'm not fit to compete," said the US Open champion.

Talking about his injuries, Murray had said at Rome:

"Until Madrid, it had been OK but it's not been perfect for a long period. You always go into matches with little niggles and such, but it's frustrating when for a long period you're hurting."

Now, having opted out of the Paris clay, Murray will hope to be fit for the start of the grass-court season at Queen's Club on 10 June.

Sir Alex Ferguson wins Manager of Year award

The 71 years old Scot Sir Alex Chapman Ferguson, the recently retired manager of the Manchester United, has been named as the Manager of the Year.

Sir Alex Ferguson was named the League Managers' Association Manager of the Year after guiding Manchester United to a 20th title.

Cardiff City's Malky Mackay was the top Championship manager, while Yeovil Town's Gary Johnson was honoured as League One Manager of the Year. Gillingham's Martin Allen won the League Two manager's award.

"In a way I am glad it is all over now because it has been hard work," said the retiring Ferguson.

It may be added that Sir Alex, who won 38 trophies in a 26-year reign at Old Trafford, will be succeeded by Everton's David Moyes, who takes over on 1 July.

First Pakistani Female Scales Mt Everest

It was great day for a sibling from Shimshal village in Hunza valley, Pakistan to step on the top of the world when they scaled the 8,848 metres high Mt Everest. Samina Baig and Mirza Ali are the only Pakistani to carry Pakistan´s National Flag to Mt. Everest on the 60th anniversary of its first ascent back in 1953.

The duo were part of 35 foreigners accompanied by 29 Nepalese Sherpa guides to scale the Everest this month. The group also included a Saudi woman who became the first Saudi woman to have scaled Mt Everest.

As for the Mirza Ali (29) and Samina Baig (21), Miss Baig became the first Pakistan woman to step on the Everest top. While her brother Mirza Ali becomes the third and youngest Pakistani male to scale the mountain.

It may be added that the group also included twin sisters Tashi and Nugshi from India who also scaled the Everest with Baig and Ali, beside females from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Palestine.

Mirza (29 years) has been climbing for last 12 years and works as a mountain guide, expedition leader and trainer in the Karakorum, Himalaya and Hindukush. Samina Baig (22 years) is a student of arts and has been climbing since four years. Her goal is to turn her love for mountaineering into her profession and work as a tour leader and mountain guide in the near future. Samina is the first Pakistani female to to have attempted any 8,000er mountain.

Earlier Everest had been scaled by two Pakistani mountaineers: Mr. Nazir Sabir & Mr. Hassan Sadpara.

A lone goal wins Arsenal fourth spot in Premier League

Sunday's match between Arsenal and Newcastle seemed to be ending in a goalless draw till Laurent Koscielny struck in the 52nd minute to bring a lone goal victory for the Gunners and secure the fourth place in the Premier League.

The French defender latched on to Lukas Podolski's header following Theo Walcott's free-kick to score his most important Arsenal goal as they pipped Tottenham to fourth spot in the Premier League and the final place in Europe's elite competition.

The Gunners finished a point ahead of Andre Villas-Boas's Spurs, who scored late on to beat Sunderland but needed to better their rivals' result. Arsenal is placed fourth now with 73 points, a point ahead of Spurs and two points short of the Blues.

Arsenal have not won a trophy since the 2005 FA Cup but reaching the top four again at least means the Gunners can attract new talent in the summer with funds due to be released for players.

Nadal and Serena win over Rome

Sunday was the lucky day for the world no.5 Rafael Nadal and world no.1 Serena Williams when the lifted the coveted Roman trophoes at the end of the Italian Open Tennis.

Nadal, the five time Roman champion, took just 58 minutes to beat world no.3 Roger Federer to win his 30th career encounter with the Swiss. Nadal beat Fedrer 6-1 6-3 at Rome's Foro Italico.

It may be recalled that it was here in 2006 that Rafael Nadal recovered from the brink of defeat 2-4 against Roger Federer to capture the Rome Masters and equal the record for consecutive wins on clay. Nadal won 6-7 (0-7) 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-5) in a thrilling final that lasted over five years.

But this year, it was just 68 minutes to previal upon Federer.

Nadal now heads to the French Open eyeing an Open-era record eighth title at Roland Garros.

In the women's single event, it was Serena Williams who dominated the match and beat third seeded Victoria Azarenka, the former long time world no.1 from Belarus, 6-1, 6-3.

It was Serena's fourth consecutive win this year. Serena who is 31 years now, but shows no signs of aging and sapping vigour and form. She now heads to Paris as a strong favourite to win the title at Roland Garros for only the second time.

25-Years old Saudi woman makes history by scaling Everest summit

In an historic move, a Saudi woman has reached the top of the world by scaling the highest Mt Everest.

The 25 years old Rehana Moharrah not only became the first Saudi woman to scale the Mt Everest, but also became the youngest Arab to make it tio the top of the world.

Originally from Jeddah, Ms Moharrak is a university graduate currently based in Dubai.

Rehana is part of a four-person expedition that also includes the first Qatari man and the first Palestinian man attempting to reach the summit.

Serena has met Halep only once in her career at Wimbledon 2011 in the second round when she beat Halep 3-6 6-2 6-1. As can be seen Halep did challenge Serena in the first set at Wimbledon - it now remains to be seen how she challenges the world no.1 today at Rome.

Pakistan beat Scotland in the First ODI

The visiting Pakistan cricket team beat Scotland by 96 runs in the first of the two one-day ODIs in Edinburgh. Misbah-ul-Haq's 78 not out spearheaded Pakistan's attack while opener Imran Farhat was dismissed for 49.

Batting first, Pakistan scored 231-7. Three wickets from Majid Haq meant he became Scotland's leading wicket-taker in one-day international matches.

Chasing the target of 232, the hosts could only manage 135 as Pakistan bowled out the Scots in the 40th over. Pakistan's Ajmal and Juniad bagged three wickets each, while Irfan, Adil and Hafeez got one each.

It may be added that Pakistan last visited Scotland in 2006, winning by five wickets with 37 balls to spare at The Grange.

The two sides meet again on Sunday at The Grange.

Italian Open: Djokovic beaten by Berdych while Sharapova Pulls out of Rome

It was a surprise day at Rome when world no.1 Serbian was beaten by Czech Tomas Berdych 2-6 7-5 6-4 to Czech in the Internazionali BNL d'Italia - Italian Open quarter-finals.

Djokovic was attempting to win his third Rome title, but has recently been troubled by pain in his ankle.

Rafael Nadal stayed on target for his third straight title as he beat fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 6-4 4-6 6-2.

Benoit Paire, 24, reached the first Masters Series semi-final of his career with a 6-1 6-0 victory over Spaniard Marcel Granollers and now faces Roger Federer for a place in the Rome final. Meanwhile Federer beat Polish Jerzy Janowicz 6-4 7-6 (7-2) to move on.

Defeat of Djokovic and Murray earlier leaves only Nadal and Federer the top seeded players in the Rome.

Meanwhile the 2012 Roland Garros queen Russian Maria Sharapova's preparations for the French Open suffered a setback after she withdrew from the Italian Open because of illness. Maria was was due to play Sara Errani in Friday's quarter-finals.

This means world no.1 Serena Williams will not have to face Sharapova in the finals as she moved into the semi-finals with a 6-2 6-0 victory over Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.
