When you first considered moving homes, the actual day of relocation and all the chores involved in preparing for it probably seemed far away. However, now you have found yourself with only days to go, and it’s time to complete the final tasks before the moving crew arrives. 

Follow these steps to prepare for your move.

1. Finalize arrangements for the items the moving crew is not handling. If you have decided to pack up your home yourself, you are hopefully nearly done with your packing checklist. Even if you have hired Camelot’s packing pros, there are a few items they won’t be handling, such as liquids, aerosols, propane, and perhaps plants. From the kitchen and bathrooms to the garage and backyard, gather these items, including cooking and cleaning products as well as motor oil. Be sure to properly dispose of these items or arrange to give them away or transport them yourself. Regarding plants, in most cases, your Camelot crew will be able to transport your plants for you. One exception is that often we are not allowed to transport plants across state lines. Please consult with Camelot before moving day for details to finalize arrangements.
2. Label what is being left behind. Help your movers out by clearly labeling the items being left in the home, such as large appliances, lighting, patio sets, or furnishings that the home buyer has purchased or belong to the landlord/property. If you can, set these items aside, clearly separating them from the items going in the truck.
3. Label what items are traveling with you. Whether you are traveling across town or across the country, there will be items that you will need to have by your side. Pack and identify your suitcases and/or Moving Day bag, which contains important paperwork, driving directions, medicine, pet supplies, etc. that you won’t want to be without. Consider placing these items in the car or a designated closet that has otherwise been emptied, and then inform the movers that nothing in that space needs to be handled.
4. Finalize any remaining moving decisions. Are you keeping the couch or giving it away? What about the rugs? Now is the time to finalize any last-minute moving decisions so that your movers will know exactly what they need to handle once they arrive.

• Packing Up

S/he will be the last one to leave the house, with you, and the first one to arrive at the new home, where s/he will be placed similarly in a quiet, closed-off room that will not be entered/exited until the movers are gone and the front door is safely closed.

As you begin to settle into your new home, be sure to pet-proof the new place and yard, particularly identifying ways your dog may escape. While it will take some time to completely unpack, try to put as much of your furniture in place as possible and don’t leave anything precariously placed or any towers of boxes too tall before letting your pets out of their safe space. 

Outdoor cats should remain indoors for a full 3 days before they are allowed outside so their bearings can be readjusted to their new home. Ease them into the outdoors of their new home, making sure they know this new location is their home. Many freshly relocated cats find their way back to their old home. 

Gradually introduce your pets to their new environment and monitor their behavior and curiosity to ensure their emotional and physical safety. Give your pets plenty of time and attention for a period of time after a move. You’ll unpack your boxes with time and as needed. The boxes are literally not going anywhere. Your pets, on the other hand, need your love and attention to reassure them that they are indeed home.
