So you plan to be in Buenos Aires for the holidays? There are several things that are important to be aware of!

First, expect A LOT of fireworks! If you don't like noise then get some earplugs, and for your dogs while you're at it! I'll never forget when our daughter was just a few days old, the amount of fireworks in our neighborhood was like a war zone - she slept right through it and so did my husband, me and my cat and the dogs did not!

The most important times for getogethers (and hence for places to be closed) are dinner on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve and then lunch on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Watch out for drivers who have been consuming too much alcohol or are hurrying around at the last minute. We all know how dangerous it is in BA for drivers and pedestrians so be on your toes more than usual!

Christmas Eve/New Years Eve:

* Cabs - limited starting in the afternoon
* Buses - similar to Sunday schedules or even less
* Kioskos - hit or miss with some open so they can sell fireworks or alcohol.
* Restaurants - hit or miss, make a reservation if you're worried

Christmas Day/New Years Day:

* Chinese stores in the late afternoon
* Cabs - increasingly available as the day goes on
* Kioskos - still hit or miss starting later in the day
* Bakeries - morning
* Movie Theaters - New Years Day in the afternoon

Argentina to begin tourist reciprocity fees on December 20 2009

There's been talk for some time about the tourist "reciprocity" fee that was to be put into play. It seems that beginning on December 20, 2009, the fees will go into effect for American Citizens who are visiting Argentina for business or tourism. The fee will be $131 U.S. dollars. As of now the fee will only be Ezeiza International Airport. It will then be good for ten years for multiple entries into Argentina, in accordance with U.S. reciprocity. You'll be able to pay the fee in U.S. dollars, by credit card or with travelers checks.

Raising Funds to see terminally ill mother in law

Hi Everyone,

This is a tough thing for me to post but I'm swallowing my pride and doing it anyway. I had posted awhile back for prayers for my mom in law who is in France being treated for uterine cancer. At this point the doctor is saying it's terminal and we desperately need to send my husband there but it's simply not possible with the financial strain that we're under. So I'm asking for anyone who might be able to chip in even a few dollars to consider doing so. It's simply unfathomable to me to be in his shoes - to not be able to see her at this time simply because of a plane ticket. When my mom was dying, I could at least drive three days to see her. DNI help for expats in Buenos Aires

For all you expats or Argentines with boyfriends/girlfriends/husbands/wives etc Frank over at Sugar and Spice bakery posted about a FREE DNI workshop for expats that you don't want to miss.

The seminar will be conducted by Solange Verón, an English-speaking immigration lawyer. She'll be speaking at a seminar organized by IMAS and hosted by Areatres and best of all you'll be able to taste some of the fabulous tasty treats from Sugar and Spice bakery (that's enough right there in my book ;)).

Here's what to expect according to the website:

The seminar, since it's the first one of many, will be as general as possible. No question regarding DNI and legal residency will be "off topic." Ask what you want and be prepared to hear from an expert in the field, Solange Verón, an English-speaking immigration lawyer, who has helped some of us expats here get their honest-to-god DNI.

The seminar will start promptly at 7pm and is scheduled to run for two hours

Argentine beef production shifts towards grain fed

NPR - national public radio just produced a story about the rapid shift of producing beef on grain rather than the old tradition of being raised on grass. Good old American style feedlot beef will eventually eclipse the much healthier and tastier grass fed beryef and also wipe out a tradition steeped in rich history.
