DETROIT (Reuters) – In a town where the cars are the stars, a tractor with a top speed of 8-miles-per-hour is ready for its closeup.Equipped with cupholders, power steering and other fancy trappings, a new line of premium riding lawn mowers from Sears Holdings Corp’s Craftsman division will debut next month at the Detroit auto show.

It’s rare for a non-automobile company to use the show as a launch pad for vehicles not sold at a car dealership, but Craftsman hopes the early January debut can turn car buffs on to a new generation of tractors that come with more advanced technology.

“A lot of people, when they think about mowing, they think about using the tractor as a chore,” Craftsman General Manager Kris Malkoski said in an interview on Thursday. “This is a premium tractor — more of a luxury.”

Priced between $3,000 and $6,500, Craftsman’s new CTX lineup carry price tags that are as much as double that of more economic mowers.

The move to launch a family of tractors at a car show rather than a conventional lawn and garden show could greatly increase visibility for the brand as it aims to move up market to better take on rivals like Deere & Co , Cub Cadet and Toro Co . Craftsman generates $2.5 billion in annual revenue from power products, including drills and garage door openers.

About 750,000 people attend the Detroit show, including thousands of journalists from dozens of countries. For years, automakers have been using the venue to unveil next year’s models or test receptivity to moonshot concept cars.

At times, those automakers have even showed off products that are not part of typical product line, such as when Ford Motor Co unveiled electrified bicycles or Honda Motor Co <7267.T> featured its ASIMO humanoid robot.

“WHAT’S NEXT?”

However, the Detroit auto show’s decision to give Craftsman a platform promises to raise eyebrows of automotive purists who think auto shows should stick to cars.

“It’s an automobile show, stupid, not motorcycles or garden implements,” former General Motors Co product czar Bob Lutz said. “What’s next? Plumbing and bathroom fixtures? A Toto-toilet stand? An Art Van furniture stand?”

Lutz will be launching vehicles at the auto show for Via Motors, which is planning to build extended-range electric pickup trucks and sport utilities that operate like the Chevrolet Volt. These vehicles are based on GM models such as the Silverado truck or Tahoe SUV, but will be sold under the Via brand name.

He is on the Via board of directors.

Joe Rohatynski, a spokesman for the auto show, said the deal with Craftsman is purely a marketing partnership and not intended to rival the 40-plus vehicle launches it plans for the show. Craftsman will be in a concourse with other vendors like the History Channel and Hot Wheels, instead of on the show floor.

But Craftsman’s Malkoski sees the event as a significant debut of high-end products by a brand that has largely been associated with lower-priced mowers. The new tractors’ 8-mile-per-hour top speed is at the top of the mower industry, she said.

Other features include press-button adjustments for blade height and attachments that quickly convert the mower into a hauler, aerator, sweeper or snowplow. It goes on sale in February at Sears stores in the United States.

“We were so excited about the launch of this line that we said ‘how can we take this tractor to the level that great cars are on?’ Malkoski said.

The CTX line will be built in New York and Georgia by Briggs & Stratton Co .

‘A WHOLE DIFFERENT LIGHT’

“The idea is to put this Craftsman brand in a whole different light,” Michael Bernacchi, a marketing professor with University of Detroit Mercy, said. “They’re certainly looking to capitalize on the wow factor … and the curiosity factor.”

Craftsman’s not the only one looking for a boost.

The Detroit auto show in recent years has scaled back following a dramatic downturn in vehicle demand and the bankruptcies of two domestic automakers. In recent years, some automakers — including Porsche AG and Nissan Motor Co <7201.T> — didn’t even participate in the show, although they will return for 2012.

Like many auto shows around the world, Detroit organizers have courted a litany of emerging players in the global automotive business. The list includes Chinese auto makers yet to sell models in the United States, and alternative-energy vehicle makers with plans to sell battery-powered or hybrid cars, like Lutz’s work with the Via brand.

Wes Raynal, editor of AutoWeek magazine, said Detroit organizers have to this point largely avoided following its peers into the world of having a broad range of transportation products on the show floor. But he’s encouraged by the change.

“If you go to other shows around the world, you’ll see all kinds of different modes of transportation,” he said. “Some are there because they are just fans of the internal combustion engine and love wheeled toys, no matter what the toy’s purpose.”

He referenced the Tokyo auto show, in particular, where visitors can see scooters, bikes and other non-automotive transportation options.

Manuals For Craftsman Snow Blowers

So you lost your manual.  You looked on the web and you have found 50 different places that will sell you one. Well, surprise! You never have to pay for a manual for any Craftsman lawn mower, tool, or snow blower.

They are readily available from the managemylife.com.  Managemylife is a Sears owned site.

To get your manual:

1. Find the model number on your snowblower (or other Craftsman item) It will look like 123.123456.  The current Craftsman snowblowers all start with 247. Write the number down.

2. Go to Managemylife.com and click on the manuals tab.

3. Put in your model number and hit the search button.

4. On the next screen you see a manual or a list of manuals.  Click on the “Get Manual” that matches your model number.

5. You can read the manual on your screen, download it to your computer, and/or print it out. It’s all free.

Snow Blower Storage

Your snow blower has helped you tackle your winter cleanup efficiently and safely. Before you pack it up, make sure you properly prepare your snow blower for storage. Taking a little time to get your machine ready for the off-season will help prevent rust, corrosion and maintenance problems. Follow these tips for storing your gas-powered snow blower to ensure your machine is ready to go when the first snow falls next winter.

Step 1: Dry out the tank

Add stabilizer to your gas tank to prevent deposits from forming in your fuel system while your snow blower is in storage. Deposits can hinder your machine’s engine performance or stop it from running altogether. After you’ve added the stabilizer, allow the engine to run for approximately five minutes to ensure the inside of the tank gets coated. Right before storing your snow blower, let the engine run until the tank is dry. Try to start it to verify all the fuel is out of the system. If it starts successfully, continue running it until the tank is empty.

Step 2: Inspect the parts

Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent your snow blower from starting while in storage. Then, inspect all the snow blower parts to make sure they are properly tightened and in good condition. Before storing your snow blower, tighten loose parts and replace any that are damaged or worn. When replacing parts, make sure you get genuine parts specific to your brand. This maximizes your machine’s performance and lifespan. Use the brand’s web site to quickly locate the correct replacements for your unique snow blower.

Step 3: Clean it

The next thing you need to do to prepare your snow blower for storage is clean it. You can use soap, water and a rag. In addition to preserving the appearance of your machine, cleaning it will help prevent rust and corrosion. Make sure you dry it thoroughly, and store it in a dry place either in your garage or shed.

Step 4: Cover it

Finally, you can cover your snow blower for additional protection. A cover further protects your snow blower from the external environment and potential aesthetic damage caused when moving or shifting things around in your storage area. I found out the information on the Sears Craftsman Black Friday Snow Blower and I wanted to pass it along to you so you can decide if it is worth waiting until 4 am Friday Morning to buy your next snow blower.

It’s Not The Best Snow Blower. It’s The Best Snow Blower For YOU!

Great News! This year’s Black Friday Snow Blower is not a piece of junk like last year’s “deal” but it is a very basic machine.  But I will ONLY recommend this snow blower if you hate your single-stage snowblower and want something that will cut through those huge drifts at the end of your driveway that the city snow plow leaves. The main reason I am limiting my recommendation is : The snow blower only has one forward speed. It will be too slow most of the time and the rest of the time it will be to fast. This is a better snow blower than last year’s DATG (Day After Thanksgiving) deal.  I will compare it directly to the Craftsman Model 88957. In a minute:

Summary: This is not a bad snowblower for the price but it DOES NOT have electric start, poly skid shoes, 6 speed trans, auger lock, or 4 way chute. It does have remote crank poly chute, 179 cc engine, 21 ” intake height, 13″x4″ snow tires, and regular snowblower handles.

But, If you have a small driveway that gets filled in from the plow truck the Craftsman 22 in 179cc Dual-Stage Snow Thrower is a much better alternative than a single stage machine.

I decided to update an article I wrote last year titled “Craftsman, Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Yardman, Yard-Machines Snow Blowers What’s the Difference? and add a few more snowblowers made by the MTD so you can make the best decision on what Brand to buy. Again, I’m going to use the 26 inch snow blower made by MTD as the example.  You can also use this information if you want to buy a 24, 28, 30, 33, and 45 inch snow blower. 

It’s not which is the best snow thrower.  It which snow thrower is best for you!

All of the snow blowers discussed here are manufactured by MTD Products Inc.  Ariens, Toro, Husqvarana, John Deere, Poulan Pro, Brute and Snapper are also made in the U.S. but are not manufactured by MTD. This article does not cover the the more than 100 brands of 100% Chinese made snow blowers trying to get into the U.S. market.

All of the MTD built snow blowers are similar. The main differences are only features, service, and price. All of these snow blowers will give you years of service if you buy the right size for your driveway and do a little preventative maintenance each year. The 26 inch models I am using in this article can easily handle 60 to 80 inches of snow a year on a 2-car driveway up to 150 ft long. In this article, I will take a 26 inch, Craftsman, Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Yardman, MTD Pro, Yard-Machines, Craftsman®/MD and compare each one. (Note the info I use is from  Sears.com, Lowes.com, Nextag.com, NorthernTool.com, Sears.ca, and HomeDepot.ca. You can easily use what you learn here to compare the other sizes and brands. NOTE: You can’t buy the Craftsman®/MD here in the U.S.)

Yes, They are all the same.

 Features.

Getting the exact machine and features for you is the top priority.  The 4-way chute control is nice. It is built better than the 2009 and older models and will hold up well.  The extended chute does a better job of putting the snow where you want it.   Being able to accurately put the snow where you want it can be a real blessing if your driveway is right up against your house or you have fences and other obstacles to go over.

My opinion: The poly skids don’t scratch your cement driveway or sidewalks. In other words you won’t have brown (rust streaks) on your driveway in the spring.  They will last as long as steel skids and they are only $30 when you need to replace them. The 4 way chute allows you to precisely put the snow where you want it.  If you have never owned a snow blower where you can control both the chute and the discharge from behind the machine you don’t know what you are missing. Power Steering allows ANYONE to use this machine. It is worth the extra money if you have petite or older people use the snow blower.

Engine Size:

All of the engines on these snow throwers are made for MTD. The Powermore engines are not Briggs ripoffs or Honda Clones. These winterized engines are designed and manufactured to specific standards for the North American Snowblower market.  They are made by one of the world’s largest motorcycle engine manufactures not some fly-by-night garage and tent operation.  This engine manufacture also works with other brands you know and trust like Harley Davidson to deliver high quality engine components. Just like the Bosch starter in your car these motors are licensed from the manufacture so that Sears can put the Craftsman name on it or Cub Cadet can put their own name on it. Yes, I am patriotic just like you.  I would rather buy “Made in the USA” than made in China but there are currently only three “snow engine” brands being sold in the U.S. – Powermore, Briggs & Stratton and LCT.

My Opinion: The Cub Cadet clearly has the largest motor.  Cub Cadet has always tried to be a little better than the other brands manufactured by MTD so this is not surprise. Parts: Craftsman has parts readily available and a Cub Cadet Servicing Dealer will also get parts quickly.  With the other brands my understanding is you have to find a Service Center and then have them order the parts.

Warranty and Service:

Cub Cadet: 3 year limited. Authorized Servicing Dealers. These products can be very hard to get repaired UNLESS you buy them directly from a servicing dealer.
Craftsman: 2 year limited.  Optional 3 and 5 year full Protection Plan through Sears.  Buy the “home” plan. If you live anywhere in the United States Sears will come to you and fix the snow blower. The plans includes most wear & tear items and fuel/carburetor repair problems.
Troy-Bilt:  2 year limited. Optional 3 and 4 year full extended warranty thru Lowes.  Lowes will send a technician to your home if you paid more than $800 your snow blower. Lowes.com
Yard Machines, MTD Products, MTD Gold: 2 year limited. These products can be very hard to get repiared UNLESS you buy them directly from a servicing dealer.
Yard-Man: 2 year limited. 2 year additional extended warranty that includes accidental damage through Northern Tool
MTD Pro: 2 year limited. Optional 3 and 5 year full Protection Plan through Sears.  Buy the “home” plan. If you live anywhere in the United States Sears will come to you and fix the snow blower.
Craftsman®/MD Model 710352150: 2 year limited.through Sears.ca

My opinion: The most common issue I hear of today is automotive fuels (ethanol gas) messing up small engines. The Craftsman clearly is the winner here.  Sears has the only Service Program that covers fuel related problems and does the repair at your house.  These repairs can quickly add up to $250 or more so the 5 year repair plan is a bargain.

Limited warranties only cover manufacture defects, don’t cover getting the snowblower to the repair technician and very seldom cover the labor to replace the part.   Above all, manufacture defects warranties DO NOT cover carburetor and fuel related issues.

Price:

Cub Cadet Model 526 SWE: Highest price (Can sometimes be negotiated) Note: HomeDepot carries Cub Cadet but it appears they would rather sell you an Ariens.  Most of the time you will have to order the Cub Cadet from them and have it shipped to your home.
Craftsman Model 88970 & 88691: Best Value for features. Sears.com runs special on-line sales that can be better than in the stores
Troy-Bilt Model 31BM63P3711 & 31BM73Q3711:  Lowes “Tries To Be Lowest Price.” But know Sears has taken their “Turf Wars” to the snow and usually will beat Lowes price on the same spec’d machine.
Troy-Bilt Model : 208 cc
Yard Machines, MTD Products, MTD Gold: You will find these at hardware stores, online through various “stores”
Yard-Man: Northern Tool has good prices this year. Order through them and have it shipped directly to your door.
Craftsman®/MD: There’s no point in comparing their price…you can’t buy one anyway

My opinion: Although the Troy-Bilt at Lowes is usually the lowest price it does not have all the features of the Craftsman, Cub Cadet and Yard-Man snow blowers.  Be sure you have all the features you want before you take the lowest price.

Summary:

As I said at the beginning, these brands of snow blowers are all the same, it’s just a few minor differences that differentiate them from each other.  The main three differences are price, service, and a few exclusive features each retailer has. Here are a few key points to leave you with.

Getting the exact machine and features for you is the top priority.  The 4-way chute control is nice. It is built better than the 2009 and older models and will hold up well.  Power steering is a must if you are small or have a bad back.  The rest of the features like headlights are “nice” but not really needed. (tape a $20 LED flashlight to your handles)

Getting it repaired should be your second priority.  Dumb things happen with snow blowers.  You forget to pickup the garden hose, your kids leave a toy in the drive, you don’t mark the edge of your patio with stakes, or some jerk throws a frozen bottle of water out of their car and you find it hiding in the snow.  If you do all of the repairs yourself, know how to get parts, have a heated garage, and don’t bother with warranties, buy the cheapest model.  If you don’t want to fix your machine, don’t know how to, or don’t have the time, buying an extended warranty or Protection Plan is the way to go.  Sears clearly has the best value here.  They use their own trained technicians, The technicians will come to you, have the longest plan, and the lowest cost per month. Just call 1-800-4MY-HOME to schedule the service and your snow blower gets fixed.

Price is the last item to think about.  If you have a Cub Cadet Dealer down the street and the nearest Lowes or Home Depot is 60 miles away…….. buy the Cub Cadet. Sears is taking their 2011 “Turf War” price and availability campaign into snow blowers.  Good Luck to the rest of the big box stores!
