Everyone wants a deal. Games cost $50 to $60 new, and if you look at games that come with peripherals, the sky is the limit. Industry sales are lagging compared to last year and we’re all squeezing pennies, but no one wants to stop playing games. CheapyD, the founder of the appropriately named Cheap Ass Gamer, has you covered.

Being cheap is big business. If a store has a sale, CAG will have the list of prices and locations. If something is going on clearance, CAG will get tipped off. During a holiday season when retailers are at each other’s throats to offer the best prices on the biggest games, CheapyD has organized a community that does one thing very well: tells readers where to go for the cheapest games.

His army of skinflints is impressive: since starting in 2003, the site now boasts 230,000 registered users and serves nine million page views a month. Ars Technica caught up with CheapyD electronically—his home base in Tokyo makes the timing of phone calls slightly tricky—to pick his brain on where to get the best prices, and why you should never buy a rhythm game at launch.

“I started panicking about a month ago,” says Jason Rosenfeld, the founder of Scenic Labs. The company makes Blu-ray 1080p “ambient discs” that include titles like “The Classic Fireplace,” “Coral Reef Aquarium,” and “Journey Through Space,” and Rosenfeld was trying to figure out how to enable Blu-ray’s forthcoming “managed copy” feature for his discs.

As one of the first companies to turn out discs with the “managed copy” logo on the back, though, Rosenfeld soon learned the pitfalls of being an early adopter—especially when no test hardware exists. We asked him about the experience of supporting a spec that’s still in the “blueprint” phase.

The Moblin project was launched by Intel in 2007 with the goal of building a Linux-based platform for small form-factor mobile devices. Although the underlying technology is compelling and exhibits considerable potential, Intel’s surprising degree of ambivalence on fundamental issues like hardware compatibility and open drivers could threaten Moblin’s relevance.

One of the clearest examples of Intel’s declining commitment is the company’s cavalier disregard for concerns about the status of the Linux drivers for its GMA500 integrated graphics component. The GMA500, which is also known as Poulsbo, is shipped in popular netbooks like the Acer Aspire One and certain Dell Mini models. Unlike Intel’s other integrated graphics solutions, Poulsbo is partly based on Imagination Technologies’s PowerVR and is only marginally supported on Linux. The Poulsbo drivers are a complete disaster and are almost impossible for Linux vendors to support.
