Canadian University Survey Consortium (CUSC) 2025 First-Year Maritime University Students: Comparison Report

The MPHEC today released a report prepared for the Commission which compares Maritime university responses to the 2025 CUSC Survey of First-Year Students to those of other participating universities in Canada. In Winter 2025, 14 Maritime universities participated in the CUSC survey as part of a Maritime collaboration group with the MPHEC. The results of this survey offer valuable insight into students’ demographic characteristics, academic and employment profile, reasons to attend university as well as their satisfaction with their first-year experience.

The MPHEC today released its Annual Digest on university enrolment which contains a series of summary tables and charts of provincial and Maritime-level statistics, showing trends over one, five and ten years. The report shows that in 2024-2025, 75,982 students were enrolled in Maritime universities, a 2.0% decrease compared to the previous year, but an increase of 8.7% over five years.

The Maritime College Student Population: 2017-2018 to 2022-2023

The MPHEC released today the first statistics on the Maritime public college student population drawing upon data from the MPHEC’s Post-Secondary Student Information System. An analytical report and an accompanying methodological document focus on the demographic and academic profile of students enrolled in the region’s public colleges over a six-year period from 2017-2018 to 2022-2023.

Please note that, as per the Commission’s policy, Academic Program Assessment Prior to Implementation, any program proposal submitted to the Commission for review between December 8, 2025 and January 2, 2026 will be held in abeyance and distributed to institutions on January 5, 2026. The timeline for a decision (of either approval or Stage II Assessment) through the Stage I process, will therefore be lengthened accordingly. [Note: Proposals received until December 5 will be distributed according to the standard distribution process.]

Updated Standards and Information Requirements for Program Assessment Process

The Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission (MPHEC) is pleased to release updated Assessment Standards and Criteria for its program assessment process. Included with this update are: (1) revised Information Requirements for New Degrees and (2) revised Information Requirements for New Certificates and Diplomas. These documents replace the assessment standards and information requirements included within the 2013 policy, Academic Program Assessment Prior to Implementation. The updated documents were developed through iterative consultation and revision including examining the program assessment process using Lean Six Sigma methodologies, researching policies and practices used by other Canadian quality assurance agencies, addressing feedback from universities and other interested parties, and incorporating lessons learned based on the experiences of AAU-MPHEC Quality Assurance Committee members and MPHEC staff. The MPHEC thanks all those who contributed to this work!

The MPHEC today released employment outcome figures for the Class of 2018 first-degree holders, surveyed in fall 2024, six years after graduation. The results are compared to those for the same Class, surveyed two years after graduation, as well as to the results of the Class of 2012, also surveyed two and six years after graduation.

The MPHEC today released its Annual Digest on university enrolment which contains a series of summary tables and charts of provincial and Maritime-level statistics, showing trends over one, five and 10 years. The report shows that in 2023-2024, 77,544 students were enrolled in Maritime universities, up 6.3% over one year and 15.3% over five years.
