Google+ Reunited Owner with DSLR After a Year on Ocean Floor

Wildlife photographer Markus Thompson was scuba diving in Deep Bay outside Vancouver recently when he stumbled upon a rusty Canon Rebel DSLR at the bottom of the ocean floor. After taking the SD card out and cleaning it, he was surprised to discover that it still worked, especially because the photos on it revealed that the camera was dropped back in August 2010. Thompson then turned to Google+ to find the owners, writing,

Actual story: found off the end of a wharf in Deep Bay, BC while I was diving on a job for the harbour. I removed the SD card, cleaned it up, stuck it in a card reader and after being underwater in a corroding camera since August 2010 - it works! Approximately 50 pictures on the card from a family vacation. If you know a fire fighter from British Columbia whose team won the Pacific Regional Firefit competition, has a lovely wife and (now) 2 year old daughter - let me know. I would love to get them their vacation photos :)

Thank you to everyone who responded with ideas (some listed below) - proof that the google+
hive-mind can be utilized to complete a simple gesture like returning someones photos :) Did I mention that I love Google+?

three pics were posted in the album from the SD card (photos aren't mine, so the child remained anonymous).
exif data was examined.
Kamloops Fire Rescue and Firefit were contacted.
Canon Canada was contacted re: camera serial number (reply received - no record of the serial number).
photos were dropped into google search and specific websites mentioned in the comments (no luck - nothing matching the exif serial online).
camera serial - canon eos rebel xs: 0520213746
SD card (for those who inquired): Sandisk Extreme III 20mb/s 2GB (it's not uncommon for SD cards to survive underwater - regardless of brand).

How To Photograph Fireworks

It’s summer and July 4th is fast approaching. That, of course, means some fantastic opportunities to capture stunning images of fireworks. Photographing fireworks can seem a daunting task if you’ve never attempted it before (or attempted without receiving your desired results).

Equipment needed:

Camera (of course)
Tripod
Remote Release
Blanket (optional)

Aperture

Contrary to most low light photography, you’ll want to use a low aperture between f/8 and f/16. The fireworks will provide a lot of light in comparison to the sky that surrounds the display, and you’ll want to take advantage of that. The darker the sky is, the more those colorful bursts of light will “pop” in your finished image.

ISO

You’ll also want to use an ideal ISO for your camera. Most digital cameras are actually at their best at 200 ISO but you can definitely do this at ISO 100. This is so that you get the least amount of digital noise and your images will turn out cleaner.

Shutter Speed

Here is your most important factor in getting great firework photographs. My preference is shooting in bulb setting and using the remote release. You’ll want to open the shutter right before the firework explodes and hold it open as the explosion occurs giving you long trailing light. If you are wanting to capture multiple bursts you can use a black card to place in front of the lens between bursts. If you go this route, know that too many bursts will overexpose the image if the fireworks overlap too much and this will cause your finished image to look overcrowded or cluttered.

Manual Focus

Cameras can have a hard time focusing in the dark so be sure to use manual focus and set it to infinity. If your camera won’t do infinity then use the landscape mode which is essentially the same thing. Another good tip if your using a point and shoot is to set your focus either before the show starts (if you have a reference point) or on the first set of explosions.

Focal Length

Using a wide focal length will help you capture the fireworks’ explosions in their entirety. This will help prevent the fireworks themselves from running off your frame. You can of course try some tighter crops by zooming in and get some really great abstract type imagery, but that can be hit or miss as it’s hard to tell exactly where the fireworks will actually burst and which direction they will head.

Framing

Vertical or Horizontal? It depends. Most often vertical is going to work best as fireworks are shot up into the air and fall back down. Often times, however, there will be a shorter wide series of fireworks that would do good to capture horizontally. Experiment with both so your options are open.

Google Adds New Search For Photographers

Today at its ‘Inside Search’ event, Google announced several new features. One of them being Google added a new search similar to TinEye.

Not so good for TinEye but good news for photographers: Google is adding reverse image search to their ever-growing list of products, allowing photographers to search using their photos to see the different places they’re being used online. Google says that the technology is similar to Google Goggles for mobile, but refined for the desktop experience. You can search for images four different ways by entering a URL, uploading from your computer, dragging and dropping onto the search page, or via Chrome and Firefox extensions. The feature will be rolling out to Google’s users over the next few days — once you see the camera icon in your search bar you’ll know you have it!
Search by Image

To search by image even faster, download the Chrome extension or the Firefox extension. With the extension installed, simply right-click an image on the web to search Google with that image.

Get Down and Dirty With Photography

Don't be afraid to get down and dirty, lying down to take photos presents a whole new world of creative photo opportunities. So many photographers worry more about lighting then different angles of view.

Lying down, flat on your stomach, propped up on your elbows, eliminates using a tripod to keep your camera steady. If wanting to get down even lower, one can always use a beanbag. Of course, if wanting to be really creative with angles, and not just make the mistake of producing a crooked photo, you don’t have to worry so much about the level of whatever it is you rest your camera on, but must still ensure the camera sits on it firmly to help prevent a blurry photograph. If purposely wanting a crooked, or angled photo, make sure the angle is quite pronounced, otherwise people who view the photo afterwards won’t believe you took a crooked photo on purpose!

Taking silhouettes, or other photos into the sun, is considered not correct by many. Just about everyone knows the sun should be behind you, but if wanting to be creative, rules don’t apply! When the sun is shining in your eyes, causing you to squint and worry about eye damage, getting down low by lying on your stomach in long grass to take a picture of something off in the distance – or even nearby – removes a lot of sun from your eyes, and introduces more interest into the bottom of the frame of your photograph.

When taking pictures of something that is usually smaller than you, for example of a small child sitting on the floor, taking the picture from above does not often result in a great image. If you are talking to a child, you get their attention more by kneeling down at their level, so remember this when taking photos of them too. Get down to make the photo more real.

Taking photos while lying on your stomach produces photos that puts viewers of the photos right in the picture, as if they’re an ant in the grass. Of course, you could also make people who look at your photos feel like a carefree child, or a tortoise on it’s back, by rolling over on the ground and taking pictures of the sky and clouds, with sunlight filtering down at you between thin and leafy branches.

"Models need more control over what we shoot!"

I was speaking with a model who said to me “Models need more control over what we shoot! Every tfcd shoot, the photographer is asking for skin. I’m a fashion model, I don’t want to show skin.” I said to her “Simple! Start paying photographers their rate, and YOU will control what you shoot!”

This totally made her mad and she brought up the fact that she’s done a lot of local publication work and that she had more of a name locally, than most of the photographers. While I agree with her to an extent, the bottom line is she wants to control what she shoots, there’s only one way to do so. Pay up! I realize the thought of a model paying a photographer is outlandish in today’s terms, but lets be real. The break down is a need based, for those who don’t understand, allow me to explane;

He who desires the work more, pays.

Pretty simple, right? Or not so. It really is simple, if I want a model in my portfolio, I’m receptive to what she says. If she wants to get paid, I will pay, if she will shoot tfcd but only shoot a specific genre, then that’s what we’ll shoot if it’s what I also want in my portfolio. I will pay the nationally published models to shoot them, cause they have a bigger name than I and it’s a simple addition game, but local models or those who want to be models, sad but I’d never pay them. Not because I feel I’m better than them, but because they don’t present me with the opportunity to advance my career.

Models want to bring your boyfriend? mother? best friend? an entire entourage? I can tell you most professional photographers will NOT allow this to happen on a tfcd shoot. Does that make the photog a “creeper”? or unprofessional? no, it makes them concerned with you making kissey faces or dozens of images of you looking off to the side to get silent approval from the person you brought. Or more often than not, you not working to your fullest for being embarrassed that they’re watching. If it’s your dime, you’re paying? I don’t care what you do! you’re totally responsible for those images!

Finally? time and time again, it has been proven that once there’s money involved, everyone is a bit more professional.

The Rise of the Ventura County Nightlife Photographer

Give me 15 minutes and I'll do the same. Discover a night in the life of a Ventura county nightlife photographer. As the adage goes, "Everyone gets 15 minutes of fame at some point in their lives." Well, for the clubbers and partygoers who venture out in Ventura County nightlife and entertainment scenes on any given Thursday night through Sunday afternoon, those 15 minutes seem to increase on a weekly basis and are by no means merely a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence (at least in the minds of those patronizing the venues dotting the landscape).

I should know. I'm in the trenches taking grenades in the form of spilled drinks and belligerent insults. I am the one who helps you get more mileage out of those fifteen minutes than even your Facebook or MySpace profile could. I am a nightlife photographer, and this is my job...
If I had a dollar for every time I've heard the phrase, "Dude, you have the coolest job ever!" I wouldn't have to subject myself to the slings and arrows of drunkards. In many ways, however, such observations are indeed accurate. This job does kick more ass than most. I mean really, how many occupations list job duties as "get drunk (for free), mingle, meet celebrities, shoot bands, attend ultra exclusive invite-only events, network," and of course, "meet hot chicks." As with any job, however, there are the inherent occupational hazards. Not the least of which is the 'roided-out and entirely too aggressive Alpha male (ease up on the injections there bud, they shrivel ye testes). I needn't launch into a description of said individuals, as they are easily noticed at a mere glance: oversized frame stuffed (literally) into a button-up striped dress shirt or Ed Hardy tee. An overbearingly aggressive demeanor rounds out the package.

I was at a club in Hollywood and I was apparently shooting a photo of this guy's girlfriend when he came out of nowhere and pushed me. He didn't say a word, just pushed me. Here's a tip gentlemen (and I do use that term loosely in this regard): don't get pissed if I, or any of my photographic pals happen to be shooting photos of your hot girlfriend/wife/fiancée. Sex sells, and the companies we take photographs for are in the business of selling themselves. In fact, weekly event and nightlife photography has escaped the '06 confines of EventVibe and NapkinNights, to become a prominent marketing strategy for many media outlets and promotion companies. Want proof? Check the watermarked logos polka-dotting the Facebook and MySpace profiles of Ventura county/Los Angeles socialites all over the county. So, if anything, be flattered we're shooting your significant other, as a testament to their beauty and/or sex appeal. After all, you're the one who's taking them home at the end of the night.

I offer the following tips for those whom we train our respective lenses upon:
1. (And this is predominantly for the ladies.) Don't ever ask us what the photos are for. I know you probably always bump into random douchebags who just so happen to be moseying about the swanky clubs you frequent every weekend with a $1,500 camera in hand because they have nothing better to do on their Friday and Saturday nights, but seriously, don't flatter yourselves ladies. We're not uploading your pics and then making sweet passionate love to ourselves as they cycle through a slideshow on our computer screens. That's why God invented Internet porn.
2. "Please" and "Thank you" are worth their weight in platinum these days. If you want us to shoot you and your girlfriends/bros, ask nicely. Or were you absent the day they taught that in pre-school? It's called tact, manners, couth, kindness or how about good old-fashioned respect for your fellow man. Addressing us as, "Hey picture guy!" or "Take my picture!" will get you nowhere fast.
3. A lil' something for the photographic effort goes a long way. Buy me (or "us," for that matter, as I'm sure I'm speaking for a number of nightlife photographers in Los Angeles and across this great striped world of ours) a drink every now and then and it will not only make our jobs easier, but will inevitably dull the pain of enduring rudeness, stupidity, disrespect and ignorance on an-almost nightly basis. I know from an outsiders' standpoint, this job seems like the greatest thing since the hotdog on a bun (and in many ways it is), but you haven't a clue the rash of ridiculousness we endure when we're busily shooting at any number of crowded clubs. Plus, a drunk photog. result in better photos. And that, friends, benefits everyone. So the next time you're out and about, keep a lookout for the fellow shooters and keep in mind what you've just read. Believe me, we will appreciate it more than you can even begin to fathom.

How I created the image of me holding my own head.

I have been getting a few questions how I created the image of me holding my own head.

I first started off by holding a ball in my hands. I set my flash on the floor 45 degrees camera left. Then started snapping shots.

It took me a total of three shots to get the composition and expression I wanted.

I then set the ball down and started making different faces with different expressions. It only took me about 4 shots to get the final one I was happy with.

I then took the two images over to photoshop.

with a simple layer mask I masked the second image I wanted to be in my hands.

After the masking I converted it to black and white and this was the final result.
