Inspired by the blog "stuff on my dogs head"

Wags & Whiskers is calling all pets to participate in a contest of demonstrating self control, or more commonly know as "leave it."

Here's how it works!

1.) Submit you $10/per photo entry fee donation via paypal. You will get a receipt from Wags via email - please forward your receipt to: contest4wags@gmail.com

2.) Email your best photo of your pet(s) with something silly, creative, or impressive on their head to contest4wags@gmail.com. Please include your pets name, breed, and age, and anything else we need to know!

3.) Send your friends to "like" your photo on facebook to win! The photo will the most "likes" will win! We will email you the link once all the photo are submitted.

It's that's easy! Please submit your donation entry fee and photos by March 9th. Voting will begin March 16th and end March 30th. Winners will be announced the March 31st.

Prizes will be award to first, second, and third place photos. Prizes TBD. Winners will also be showcased in our April newsletter!

Unleashed Spring Trunk Show / Primp Yourself + Wags & Whiskers

Next week is our Primp event! March 6th, we will be on Twin Cities Live!

We will have 5 foster dogs walking down the runway with Primp's models! Make sure to tune in!

Then on March 8th, we will be in the Primp stores and they are donating 10% of their sales back to Wags! We are so excited and thankful for this opportunity!

We are so excited to announce that on March 8th, 2012 we will be hosting our 2nd annual Spring Trunk Show: “Unleashed”. We all love to Primp ourselves but this year’s event is all about benefiting Wags & Whiskers Animal Rescue.

Wags and Whiskers is a small, local, no-kill, volunteer-run program operating online. All of the dogs listed on the site are in foster homes waiting to be adopted. The rescue is not funded by public funds nor does it receive many donations so it is dependent on adoption fees to keep operating.

We will be “unleashing” our absolute favorite spring styles throughout the day. Whether you are in search of the perfect look for an upcoming vacation or you are just ready to update your wardrobe with bright transitional pieces, we will have an array of options!

From 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm in both store locations we will provide light hors d’oeuvres and beverages. We will also have “doggie bags” available for purchase of $10- full of discounts, coupons and gift certificates donated by local businesses. Total “doggie bag” proceeds will be donated to Wags and Whiskers. Participating businesses include: CRAVE, Toby Keith’s, Soprano’s Kitchen, Pampered Pooch,O’Garas, Flirt, Blue Plate Group, St. Paul Pet Hospital, Just Paws Training, LoveLo Beauty, Muddy Paws, Creative Kidstuff, Sidewalk Dog, Modern Life Photography, Lyn Lake Productions, Nelli Designs, Just Dogs Gourmet, and Tara Engle Photography to name a few.

Featured Dog for Adoption / Zoe - Wags & Whiskers, MN Animal Rescue

ZOE

Zoe has been in foster care with Wags & Whiskers Rescue for almost two years! She came into rescue as a 4 month-old puppy with her sister, Riley, who has long since been adopted. Zoe is (we believe) a pit bull / hound mix and is the sweetest girl! She has been with her current foster home for about a year and a half and loves her foster brother and sister (a medium and small dog) and doesn't seem to mind the cats. She LOVES people and would do anything for some loves. She is also good with children and loves to cuddle with them! She is pretty high energy and loves to be outside, go for walks and just run around. She has had some obedience training because she does like to "talk" and we have been working on her jumping issue. When Zoe first meets a person, she really really wants to make a new friend! She gets really excited and sometimes jumps but after about 5 minutes she calms down. Zoe loves her exercise and does very well on walks. She also just loves to be outside and stare at squirrels. She has been up north to her fosters' cabin and was able to be off-leash all day without leaving the property. She loves to swim and play in the water. Zoe knows tricks like sit, lay down, shake, speak and stay. Zoe has been waiting so long for her forever home, who will be her family?

Wags & Whiskers MN Animal Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to saving lives and finding homes for stray, abandoned, and surrendered dogs and cats from high kill shelters. We are a small, no-kill, volunteer run organization. We do not have a physical shelter. All of our dogs are in foster homes waiting to be adopted. This rescue is not funded by public funds nor do we receive many donations, so we are dependent on adoption fees and fundraising efforts to keep us in operation. The funds we do receive go back to the animals and rescuing efforts 100%, covering veterinary costs including vaccinations, surgeries, and spaying and neutering of animals.

This year Wags & Whiskers is proud to be putting together our 1st ever calendar. We are extremely excited for this fundraising opportunity, which will give more animals a chance for survival and placement in a loving home. But we can’t do it alone and we need your help!

How Thundershirt Works

Paws on Grand ~ August Dog Friendly Event

The sixth annual Paws on Grand, along Saint Paul's Grand Avenue, offers something fun for the entire family ~ guests will visit Grand to shop for a cause, participate in family and pet friendly activities, find the perfect purchase at sidewalk sales, and enjoy all that Grand Avenue has to offer.

The goal is to collect 5000 lbs of pet food and $5000.

HOME MADE DOG TREATS

2 cups whole-wheat flour

1 tbsp. baking powder

1 cup peanut butter (chunky or smooth)

1 cup milk

Preheat oven to 375'F. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk, then add to dry ingredients and mix well. Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Bake for 15 minutes on a greased baking sheet until lightly brown. Cool on a rack, then store in an airtight container.

Being a rescued dog foster is one of the most selfless and challenging things that a person can do to help animals in need. We let these dogs steal our hearts and then love them enough to help them find a new family. Over the past year, I have worked with many of you to teach foster dogs how to live and cope in a world that hasn’t done them any favors. When these dogs show up at our doors, we feel sorry for them and want them to know that things are going to be OK. Understanding how dogs communicate and what these dogs in crisis truly need from us can help us to become more effective fosters and put every dog on the fast track toward a new family.

I believe that every dog that leaves a rescue should be equipped with specific skills to help them stay safe, understand the world of humans, and remain calm when life becomes unpredictable. We can give a dog all of the vet care, food, rest, and affection in the world and they can still fail in a home due to lack of social understanding. As fosters, we need to focus on three skills with EVERY dog that we encounter:

1. Sitting for petting – A large dog that jumps on people can be scary, annoying, painful, dirty, and a deal breaker. Work with the dog to understand the “four on the floor” rule. “If four feet are touching the ground, then I will pet you and give you attention. If your feet leave the ground, then I will ignore you and go play with someone else.” Using a knee or pushing a dog down is not only dangerous, it can also invite jumping since physical attention is playful and seen as reinforcement. Mastering this behavior is really about consistency from the humans – be an advocate for your foster and always request that friends and family ask the dog to sit before they pet him.

2. Loose Leash Walking – The American Dream of Dog Ownership definitely includes the fantasy of taking your dog for a walk without pulling or barking or lunging. We all need to make sure that our foster dogs are getting DAILY walks. Walking teaches dogs to be team members. Walks are also a great way to practice socialization and desensitization. Put your retractable leash away and start to ask your foster dog to work with you on walks. Reward the dog for looking at you. Reward the dog for being calm and relaxed. It is vital that we provide exercise and mental stimulation for our foster dogs in this way. I am always available to talk about better leash manners!

3. Recall – I have strict rules for teaching recall. I want you to think about the last time you were sitting on the sofa relaxing. Suddenly a family member yells at you to hurry up and help them with something that is far less exciting than the fun you had planned for the evening. Showing up requires a lot of faith that there will be something in it for you – it is the same for our dogs. Make showing up fun!! Every time your dog comes back reward him with praise, food or a toy. Don’t ever chase after a dog – no matter what. You are teaching him to run away when you come near. Mix up the results. Dogs learn that you say “come” and then you make them leave the dog park or put them in the crate. Make sure there is something in it for them! The most important rule is that we NEVER punish a dog for coming up to us. Bury the hate in your heart and praise like crazy when they show up – even if he chewed on your shoe.

Training is an important part of rehabilitating rescue dogs. Let’s all do our part to care for the whole dog and get them ready for the love and security that is waiting for them in their much deserved forever home.

Teach your dog to LOVE his crate by following these rules:
The dog must be in the back of the crate to get treats.
The dog must be sitting or lying down for you to open the door to treat him.
The dog may also earn treats by being quiet in the crate and staying away from the door.
If he moves toward the door when you reach for it, remove your hand (the door doesn’t open).
The dog’s nose cannot come past the edges of the doorway unless you have given permission.

Pawing at the door or crying will not be rewarded with treats or sympathy. Look away from him or even leave the area quickly if he starts to cry. If you are rewarding often you will probably not have a lot of fussing. DO NOT open the door while he is crying – wait for a moment of quiet, then open the door to treat.

Step 1 – Introduce the crate with the door open. You can lure the dog into the crate with treats or a toy or just put his food dish in the crate when you feed him. Alternately, you can simply place the puppy in the crate and immediately give him several YUMMY treats, fed from your hand, reaching as far back in the crate as possible. Remove your hand and shut the door. Before the dog starts to fuss, open the door and deliver a few more treats as far back as you can reach. Repeat this every few seconds, GRADUALLY lengthening the time between shutting and latching the door and opening it again to feed. You may also feed treats at the back of the crate by offering them to the dog through the wires or the slots in the back of the crate. When you reach for the door, remove your hand if the puppy moves toward you. If you are consistent he will stay back in the crate or back up when you reach for the door latch. When he does, reward by opening the door, reaching in and feeding the dog from your hand in the back of the crate. You can offer the food at or above the dog’s nose level in such a way that the pup is encouraged to sit for the treats. Repeat until the dog is sitting or lying down near the back of the crate.

Step 2 – Now the pup should be sitting calmly in the crate and/or backing up when you reach for the door. Open the door a little wider than you have been and present the treat in the back as before. Shut the door. Open the door, be ready to close it if he moves forward, and reward at the back of the crate. Repeat until you can open the door wide and the puppy waits for his treat in the back of the crate.

Step 3 – Test the dog’s steadiness in the crate by opening the door, keeping your hand on it and move it slightly from side to side in front of the crate. Feed if he stays put. Shut the door if he moves forward. Repeat until you can open the door, move side to side or back and forth in front of the crate and the dog stays waiting for his treat.

Step 4 – Stand outside the crate and add a verbal cue like “house”. No treats are used outside of the crate – no praise – good stuff only happens when he is in the crate! When the dog finally enters the crate, then offer a jack pot, which is 10 treats fed in a row while you offer verbal praise!

Potty Training Tips

1. Pick an area to potty train your dog.
2. You must take your dog there before you walk him or play with him. Take your puppy out the same door following the same path every time. Your puppy will learn that this is the proper place to go potty.
3. DO NOT praise or play with your puppy until he has pottied.
4. If he does not potty in 5 minutes, bring him back in to his crate or tether him to you for 15 minutes and try again until he goes potty.
5. As soon as he goes potty, give him a treat outside and offer praise.
6. Do not punish the puppy for having an accident. You may interrupt him with a loud “eh eh” or clapping your hands, but leave it at that.
7. Crate your puppy until he is completely potty trained.
8. Offer your puppy measured food twice a day. Allow him 15 minutes to eat his food and then take it away. Control water and make sure to take it away a few hours before bed. Ice cubes are a great way to hydrate and entertain!
9. Be consistent and remember that most puppies do not have complete bladder control until at least 5 months old.
10. The crate size for training should only be big enough for your puppy to stand up, turn around and lie down in. If you purchase a larger crate, you will have to block it off. This will prevent your puppy from going potty in the front and sleeping in the back.

Prodigy Dog's Leash Walking Tips & Tricks.

Dogs are not born to understand how leashes work. Most of the dogs that your dog will meet in his life will be on leash. How we respond and advocate for our dog can impact how he comes to view these interactions. In dog world, social interaction is not designed to work well with long ropes tied to each animal and humans working the puppet strings. There are a few simple rules to follow to help keep your dog safe and improve social interaction:

1. Always ask permission before allowing your dog to greet another dog. This means that you will need to reign in your retractable leash and be aware of your surroundings. Shut off your cell phone and help your dog be on the lookout.

2. Do not allow your dog to approach another dog if he is not relaxed and calm. Many dogs are bitten because they appear to be a threat. Hyperactive behavior is not appreciated by other dogs and can set your dog up to fail. If he is too excited, then walk on by and do not allow your dog to greet the stranger.

3. When you do allow your dog to "say hi" to another neighborhood friend, it is very important to maintain a tension free leash. In dog language eye to eye contact is a signal for a direct threat. Dogs naturally sniff behinds before making direct contact. Allow your dog enough leash to be comfortable moving around the new dog. I call it the business card on the business end - sniffing butts is a good thing!

4. Keep leash interactions short and sweet. Keep moving and stay calm. Leash aggression is based in fear. Dogs feel trapped when held in on a short leash which causes them to act aggressive to let anyone in the area know that they are getting too close. The dog cannot escape, so it acts aggressively to protect itself.

5. Teach your dog not to pull on leash. He will appear more calm to approaching dogs and he will feel more relaxed when meeting new dogs.

6. Let your dog meet LOTS of new dogs. The younger the dog, the more socialization he needs. Get him out there and make new friends - early socialization is the main way to avoid aggression misunderstands with new dogs as your dog gets older.

~ Walking is the easiest way to improve the relationship with your dog and provide him with physical and mental stimulation that he desperately needs.

~ Develop a picture in your mind of how you would like the walk to go. If you can picture yourself as the leader, then you will be able to convey that energy to your dog.

~ Be on alert. Until your dog gets used to your new found leadership, you will need to be on the lookout for pitfalls. If you can redirect BEFORE your dog reacts to distractions then you will begin to change behavior.

~ Reward a few specific things that you want from your dog. Examples are eye contact, a relaxed leash, keeping the nose off the ground, remaining calm in the midst of distractions.

~ The reward must be equal to or greater than the level of distraction. SO, bring out the big guns on walks. Remember to REWARD the correct behavior, do not use the reward to try and distract the dog once he has already lost control.

~ Allowing your dog to pull you will most certainly increase his anxiety and fear. He is also likely to have complications with his trachea, eyes and joints. A relaxed dog is much less likely to have behavioral issues on a walk.

~ Have fun, be exciting and make your trips outside a part of training – if the rules remain the behavior will improve.

Who We Are:

Wags & Whiskers Animal Rescue is dedicated to saving lives and finding forever homes for stray, abandoned and surrendered dogs in high kill shelters.
We are a small, no-kill, volunteer run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All of our dogs listed are in foster homes waiting to be adopted and because of this, we get to know the dogs' personalities very well and use this information to match them to an appropriate home. We do not have a physical shelter. This rescue is not funded by public funds nor does it receive many donations so it is dependent on adoption fees to keep operating.
