Tyres are more than just rubber; they’re the foundation of your car’s performance and safety. From grip to fuel efficiency, the type of tyres you choose can significantly impact your driving experience. At MQ Tyres, we understand the importance of making the right choice, which is why we offer a comprehensive range of options, including all-season tyres.

In this guide, we’ll delve into the world of all-season tyres, exploring their benefits, cost-effectiveness, and lifespan. Whether you’re a domestic, commercial, or industrial customer, this guide aims to answer all your questions about all-season tyres.

What Exactly Are All-Season Tyres?

All-season tyres are designed to offer a balanced performance across a variety of road conditions and weather scenarios. Unlike specialised summer or winter tyres, all-season tyres provide a middle-ground solution, capable of handling both warm and cold climates.

The All-Weather Advantage

One of the standout features of all-season tyres is their versatility in different weather conditions. Whether you’re driving through rain-soaked roads or a sunny motorway, these tyres offer reliable grip and stability. This makes them a popular choice for drivers in Bedford, where the weather can be quite unpredictable.

MQ Tyres’ Commitment to Quality

At MQ Tyres, we ensure that our all-season tyres meet the highest standards of quality and performance. Our experienced team of fitters are fully qualified and accredited, ensuring that your tyres are fitted with utmost precision.

Do I Need All-Season Tyres?

All-season tyres are particularly beneficial for those who drive in a variety of conditions but don’t want the hassle of switching between summer and winter tyres. They offer a balanced performance, making them suitable for wet, dry, and mildly snowy conditions.

Comparing Tyre Types: All-Season vs. Specialised

While all-season tyres offer a jack-of-all-trades solution, it’s essential to understand how they stack up against specialised tyres. Summer tyres may offer better grip in hot conditions and winter tyres are designed for optimal performance in snow and ice. However, all-season tyres provide a balanced performance that eliminates the need for seasonal tyre changes, making them a convenient choice for many drivers.

Why Choose MQ Tyres for Your All-Season Needs

As an independent company, MQ Tyres takes the responsibility for your safety seriously. Our range of all-season tyres is fitted by fully qualified and accredited fitters, ensuring that you receive a product that is both high-quality and safe.

Are All-Season Tyres Expensive?

When it comes to the cost of all-season tyres, many drivers find them to be a cost-effective solution in the long run. While they may have a slightly higher upfront cost compared to budget tyres, their versatility can save you the expense and inconvenience of seasonal tyre changes.

The Cost-Benefit Analysis

Investing in all-season tyres can offer significant savings over time. Their durability and ability to perform well in various conditions mean fewer trips to the tyre shop for replacements or seasonal swaps. This makes them a financially sound choice for many motorists.

Budget-Friendly Options at MQ Tyres

At MQ Tyres, we offer a range of budget-friendly all-season tyres alongside our premium options. Whether you opt for budget brands like Autogrip and Runway or go for branded ones, you can be assured of quality and safety.

How long do all-season tyres last?

The lifespan of all-season tyres can vary depending on several factors, such as driving habits, road conditions, and maintenance. However, with proper care, you can expect them to last anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 miles.

Extending the Life of Your All-Season Tyres

Regular maintenance can significantly extend the lifespan of your all-season tyres. Simple practices like tyre rotation, proper inflation, and regular inspections for wear and tear can make a big difference in how long your tyres last.

MQ Tyres: A Commitment to Durability

We offer a complete service that ensures your tyres are well-maintained for maximum lifespan. Our experienced team of fitters will provide you with the best advice and assistance, ensuring that you get the most out of your all-season tyres. Contact us today.

All-Season Tyres in Snow and Summer

One of the most compelling features of all-season tyres is their ability to adapt to various weather conditions. Whether you’re navigating through a snowy landscape or cruising on a hot summer day, these tyres offer a level of versatility that’s hard to beat.

The Science Behind Weather Adaptability

All-season tyres are engineered with a unique tread pattern and rubber compound that allows them to perform well in both cold and warm conditions. This makes them a suitable choice for the unpredictable weather patterns often experienced in Bedford and the surrounding areas.

MQ Tyres: A Range for All Weathers

At MQ Tyres, we always have a wide range of all-season tyres available for cars, lorries, vans, and trucks. Our stock includes popular sizes, ensuring that we can get the correct tyre to you as quickly as possible, no matter the weather.

Elevate Your Driving Experience with All-Season Tyres

All-season tyres offer a versatile, cost-effective, and durable solution for a wide range of driving conditions. At MQ Tyres, we’re committed to providing you with the best all-season tyres, expertly fitted by our experienced team.

Are you in the market for new tyres but worried about breaking the bank? Budget tyres can seem like an attractive option, but many drivers wonder whether they’re worth the savings.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the lifespan of budget tyres and answer some common questions, such as: Are budget tyres safe? Are they a false economy? And how many miles should you expect to get out of different types of tyres, whether you drive a front-wheel or rear-wheel drive vehicle?

We’ll also touch on some popular tyre brands like Michelin and offer tips for prolonging the life of your tyres.

Understanding Budget Tyres

When it comes to buying new tyres, budget options can be very tempting. After all, who wouldn’t want to save a few pounds on something as seemingly mundane as tyres? However, it’s important to understand that not all tyres are created equal, and choosing a budget option may have consequences down the line.

So, what exactly are budget tyres, and how do they differ from more expensive options? In general, budget tyres are made from cheaper materials and have less advanced technology than premium tyres. This means that they may not perform as well in certain conditions or last as long as their more expensive counterparts.

Of course, this isn’t to say that all budget tyres are inherently bad. In fact, some budget options can be perfectly suitable for certain types of driving and vehicles. However, it’s important to be aware of the potential drawbacks and do your research before making a decision.

How Long Do Budget Tyres Last?

One of the most common questions drivers have about budget tyres is how long they can be expected to last. Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the lifespan of tyres can vary depending on a number of factors.

One of the biggest factors affecting tyre lifespan is the type of driving you do. If you primarily drive on smooth, well-maintained roads, your tyres may last longer than if you frequently encounter potholes, debris, and other hazards. Similarly, if you tend to drive aggressively or frequently take sharp turns, your tyres may wear down more quickly than if you drive more conservatively.

Another factor to consider is the specific brand and model of tyre you choose. While all budget tyres are generally made from cheaper materials, some may be more durable than others. It’s a good idea to read reviews and do some research on the specific tyre you’re considering before making a purchase.

On average, budget tyres tend to last anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 miles. However, it’s important to note that this is just a rough estimate, and your tyres may wear down more quickly or last longer depending on the factors mentioned above.

In the next section, we’ll delve into some of the potential drawbacks of choosing budget tyres, as well as some tips for prolonging the life of your tyres regardless of the type you choose.

The Potential Drawbacks of Budget Tyres

While budget tyres can be a good option for some drivers, there are also some potential drawbacks to keep in mind.

One of the biggest concerns with budget tyres is safety. Cheaper materials and less advanced technology can lead to tyres that don’t perform as well in certain conditions, such as wet or icy roads. This can increase the risk of accidents and make it more difficult to control your vehicle.

Another concern is durability. As we mentioned earlier, budget tyres tend to have a shorter lifespan than more expensive options. This means you may need to replace them more frequently, which can add up over time and ultimately cost you more money in the long run. However you can make your tyres last longer, check out our bog post on “How to make your tyres last longer.“

Additionally, budget tyres may not offer the same level of comfort or performance as premium tyres. For example, they may be louder or less responsive, which can make for a less enjoyable driving experience.

Of course, it’s important to remember that not all budget tyres are created equal, and some may perform perfectly well in all of these areas. However, it’s still a good idea to weigh the potential drawbacks against the cost savings before making a decision. In the next section, we’ll offer some tips for making your tyres last as long as possible, regardless of the type you choose.

Tips for Prolonging Tyre Life

Regardless of whether you choose budget or premium tyres, there are some steps you can take to help ensure they last as long as possible. Here are a few tips:

Maintain proper inflation: Keeping your tyres properly inflated can help prevent premature wear and improve fuel efficiency. Check your tyre pressure regularly (at least once a month) and adjust as needed.

Rotate your tyres: Rotating your tyres (switching them from front to back and vice versa) can help ensure they wear down evenly. Many tyre shops offer this service for free or at a low cost.

Drive conservatively: Aggressive driving, such as rapid acceleration and hard braking, can put extra wear on your tyres. Try to drive more smoothly and avoid sudden movements.

Avoid overloading your vehicle: Carrying too much weight in your car or truck can put extra strain on your tyres, leading to premature wear and potential blowouts.

Choose the right tyres for your vehicle and driving style: As we’ve discussed, not all tyres are created equal. Do your research and choose the best tyres for your specific vehicle and the type of driving you do.

Choose the right tyres for your vehicle and driving style: As we’ve discussed, not all tyres are created equal. Do your research and choose the best tyres for your specific vehicle and the type of driving you do.

Popular Tyre Brands: Are They Worth the Extra Cost?

While budget tyres can be a good option for some drivers, others may prefer to invest in more expensive options from well-known tyre brands like Michelin, Goodyear, or Bridgestone. But are these premium brands really worth the extra cost?

The answer, as with many things, is that it depends. Premium tyres generally offer better performance, safety, and durability than budget tyres, thanks to their more advanced technology and higher-quality materials. They may also be more comfortable and offer a quieter ride, which can be especially important if you spend a lot of time on the road.

That being said, not all premium tyres are created equal, and some may not be worth the extra cost for your specific vehicle and driving style. It’s important to do your research and read reviews before making a decision.

One potential downside of premium tyres is that they may have a shorter lifespan than some budget options. This is because they’re designed for high performance and may wear down more quickly than tyres made for more sedate driving.

Ultimately, whether you choose budget or premium tyres will depend on your individual needs and budget. However, it’s worth considering the potential benefits and drawbacks of each option before making a decision.

Conclusion

In conclusion, budget tyres can be a good option for some drivers, but they’re not always the best choice. While they may save you money upfront, they may not offer the same level of performance, safety, and durability as more expensive options.

When choosing tyres, it’s important to consider your specific vehicle and driving style, as well as factors like the brand and model of tyre you’re considering. Additionally, taking steps to prolong the life of your tyres, such as maintaining proper inflation and driving conservatively, can help ensure that you get the most out of your investment.

You’re in the process of upgrading the tyres for your vehicle but are curious about what all the writing on your tyre walls means? The tyre wall markings are mainly on the tyres, for two reasons; primarily to convey the size and specification of the tyre, and secondly to prove that the tyres have passed European necessary country safety standards.

At MQ Mobile Tyres, we make it our priority to know everything there is about tyres, and we can provide you with advice and expertise on each different aspect of tyre specification, safety, and suitability that is essential for your vehicle.

What Do The Number On Side of Tyres Mean?

The string of numbers displayed in the image (175 / 60 R 15) gives an indication of the size of the tyre that is required to fit your vehicle. These tyre numbers mean the following:

175 – Tyre Width: This indicates the width of the tyre in mm from sidewall to sidewall

60 – Aspect Ratio: These numbers follow from the / on the sidewall of the tyre and are expressed as a percentage of the type width

R – Tyre Construction: The letter ‘R’ indicates that the tyre is of radial construction. The other two types of tyre construction include ‘B’ (bias belt) and ‘D’ (diagonal)

15 – Wheel Diameter: This figure signifies the size of the wheel rim in inches that the tyre should be fitted to.

Other Tyre Symbols Explained?

Load Index

The load index is a numerical code, in the image above represented by 99 and this refers to the maximum carrying capacity (in kg) that a tyre can carry. The load index is directly related to the total weight in kilograms.

Speed Rating

The speed rating is displayed by a letter and this is the maximum speed that a tyre can service when is correctly inflated, and carrying its maximum load. The speed rating is the letter at the end of the sidewall, after the load index number. A tyre with a speed rating of W, for example, has a maximum speed of 270 KM/H.

The table below gives a more detailed representation of speed rating for car tyres:

Speed Symbol

Max Speed MPH

Max Speed KMH

Q

99

160

R

106

170

S

112

180

T

118

190

H

131

210

V

149

240

VR

131

210

W

168

270

Y

186

300

ZR

149

240

Table above illustrates the max suggested speed for your vehicle based on the speed symbol of your Tyres

Tyre Load Capacity

This number gives you a rough indication of the maximum load that your tyres can handle. This is important to know if you are loading your car with heavier items for lengthier trips. You can locate the tyre labelling on the sidewall of your tyre. Look for a two to three digit number which indicates the tyre load capacity.

Get in Touch!

We hope that this short guide has given you a better insight into tyre wall markings, understanding all the basic fundamentals of a tyre and knowing how to pick the right tyre spec for your vehicle.

If you are still unsure about tyre wall marking or would like advice on anything tyres related, please contact our team on 01234 327328 or use our contact form, and a member of our team will be more than happy to help you!

A question that we get asked frequently is whether or not it is worth buying budget tyres over premium brand tyres as a cost saving strategy. This is so often the case when people are looking to keep their current car on the road and are not looking to upgrade or buy new.

In this blog post, we are going to outline some of the things to take into consideration when buying budget or cheap tyres.

How Long Will Budget Tyres Last?

If you urgently need to change your tyres because you have punctured it, the tread has worn down or you are running low on cash for the month then budget types are a good alternative to premium tyres.

They can be a very good choice if you are not doing a lot of long distance commuting or are only driving when you really need to. If you drive your car quite frequently then budget tyres are probably not for you, due to the fact they are the least durable tyres out of all options available and will wear out faster than other alternatives.

It may be worth thinking twice about which tyres are right for you, you may think that you are saving money in the short term by buying budget tyres, but if they wear out quickly you’ll have to pay out for another set and will end up costing you significantly more in the long term.

Regulations For Budget Tyres in The UK?

In the UK, all new tyres that are sold have a threshold to meet the industry standards. With new budget tyres, there is no exception and they must pass all legal requirements and safety measures for them to be sold by retailers in the UK.

New budget tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 7-8mm

Tyre safety standards must be met to be sold within the UK

Budget tyres are much safer and more reliable than buying part worn tyres

What’s The Difference Between Premium and Budget Tyres?

Performance

Premium and budget tyres are tested frequently against each other for performance differences, to identify any trends in efficiency and durability. The results indicate that premium tyres will always beat budget tyres when compared for overall grip, handling and durability.

Premium tyres give road users improved traction on the road, and also provide greater fuel efficiency than budget tyres in almost any weather condition!

Durability

One of the biggest differences between premium and budget tyres of the materials used the manufacture the two grades of tyres.

Budget tyres are not made with the same level of materials and compounds as premium tyres, and will not have been tested and developed as thoroughly for quality control purposes.

This difference in materials can mean that premium tyres will be far more durable than budget tyres. Longer lasting tread patterns, and longer lasting when driving on any road condition.

Premium tyres are a worthwhile investment if you are commuting in your vehicle over long distances more frequently.

Are Budget Tyres Better Than Premium Tyres?

Choosing the right tyres for your car can be difficult, but it’s important to know that there isn’t a guideline for good or bad tyres. The tyres that you select should suit the vehicle that you are expecting to drive.

There are several factors that you should consider in your tyre choice too, we have listed some of these below for your own awareness:

Fuel economy: The tyres you choose will impact how often you are at the petrol station. Tyres have different treads and it’s best to look for tyres with low rolling resistance, whilst checking tyre specifications for the fuel efficiency grade.

Noise: Since each tyre tread is different, some are going to provide a louder driver experience than others. Advanced, new tyres have technology that reduces sound levels for your car lower. It’s worth noting if this is important for you.

Price: When comparing premium tyres to budget tyres, you’ll basically get what you pay for. Premium tyres offer an improved driving experience, precise handling and longer durability but will be more expensive. Budget tyres come cheap, without the impressive technology features. All tyres have to meet the safety standards by low, so this is something to consider if you want comfort and a quality driving experience.

The right tyres for you depend on what you use your vehicle primarily for and your overall driving style. Avoid getting into the habit of buying tyres based on the price tag, think about which tyres would best suit your vehicle, individual requirements and your budget.

We are now into the winter season period of the year, the weather has changed, along with the overall road conditions. Frost, ice and snow will now become key factors that a lot of UK drivers have to consider before they even start their daily commutes.

Are all season tyres great for winter driving?

All season tyres are generally designed to be used in all seasons. They are different from winter tyres, due to the fact that they are made out of unique rubber and slightly different tread patterns that allow the tyres to provide better grip in the colder conditions. Generally, they are more durable and can last longer than tyres which are designed specifically just for the winter season.

It is worth noting that in extreme cold climates or heavy snow conditions, all season tyres may not be right for you. In most areas of the UK, all-season tyres can work in your favour and be an excellent choice if you don’t want to buy specific winter tyres.

Can winter tyres affect your steering?

Winter tyres are designed for higher grip in adverse conditions. The tread design for these tyres grip into the snow, the gap between the tread blocks will fill with snow and ice. It has got the ability to remove snow from its treads, and remain soft even in colder temperatures.

Winter tyres generally have more grooves and different tread features than general / summer tyres. These grooves help in icier conditions and maintain a much better grip on the road. They’re also deep enough to hold in thick snowy conditions, which helps with traction when driving in the snow, provide more grip and reduces the overall braking distance in these colder temperatures. These types of tyres also help to reduce the risk of understeering and oversteering.

How long do all season tyres last?

All season tyres are designed to maintain performance and assist safety further in both summer days and colder winter weather. All season tyres are becoming the more tempting option for a lot of drivers when it comes to overall cost minimisation due to its versatility.

Generally speaking, all season tyres can be used all round the year, and don’t need to be changed according to seasons, resulting in lower overall costs. They do come with a drawback, being that performance wise seasonal tyres tend to be better for the specific seasons, but they are good to consider, especially depending on your current location and if your average yearly mileage is quite low.

Summer tyres vs winter tyres?

We have outlined some of the key differences between summer tyres and winter tyres to ensure that you make the right decision. Each has its own benefits but again, it serves a specific purpose.

Summer tyres generally perform better when it’s either dry or wet outside, and temperature is relatively warm whereas winter performs better when it’s driving on snow and icy conditions.

Braking Distances

Summer tyres in dry, warm conditions have the best braking distance of approximately 110 – 125 ft. Surprisingly, even in rainier conditions summer tyres can stop relatively quickly between 135 – 170 ft.

Summer tyres in snow and icy conditions start to deteriorate, these types of tyres often stop around 200 ft

Winter tyres in dry, warm conditions have a braking distance of approximately 125 – 145 ft. In rainier conditions winter tyres can stop between 150 – 220 ft.

Winter tyres in snow and icy conditions start to shine, these types of tyres can often stop in 100 ft (half of the distance required for summer tyres!)

Summer tyre tread feature benefits

Continuous centre rib for good straight line stability

Larger contact area on the outside of tyre so cornering is easier to grip the road

Less tread depth overall helps with steering feel & responsiveness

Lack of tread features compared to all season/ winter tyres really good for dry grip

Stiffer sidewalls allow for better steering response and feedback

Winter tyre tread feature benefits

Tread designed to evacuate water and slush

Deep grooves can help hold impact snow

Zig zag sipes all over the tread pattern, creates biting edge.Great for grip in wet, snowy and icy conditions

Which winter tyres are the best for me?

Winter tyres perform at its optimal performance, whenever the temperature drops below 9 degrees centigrade (appropriately 48 Fahrenheit).

Here at MQ Tyres we stock a wide selection of affordable and efficient winter tyres that are suitable for a variety of makes and models of cars Any of the following lead tyre maker brands have got some excellent winter tyres on offer – Continental, Pirelli, Goodyear, Michelin and Hankook.

We all know that tyres have tread on them but do we all fully understand why? This article will explain to you exactly what the purpose of the tread is, why it is so important and all the different kinds that you can get for different situations.

How Tread Helps To Keep Us Safe

Tyres work by having good traction, so when there is a lot of friction between the tyre and the road, there is much less chance of slipping. However, when you add water to the equation, this will make the friction between the two surfaces weaker. This means that when it rains the chances of slipping are increased which is why in the rain, ice or snow you are told to keep more of a distance between cars as it will take longer to stop when there is less friction between the tyres and the road.

Now although the rain will make it slightly more difficult to stop all of a sudden, without tread on your tyres, stopping would become very challenging and very dangerous. The tread is there to create a pathway for the water, it allows it to escape from under the tyre. This works the same way when you are in mud or snow as well, the deeper the tread the better the traction will be which is why there is a minimum tread requirement.

As well as having the main deep tread pathways, there can also be very small grooves all over the tyre as well. This maximises the amount of water that can escape from under the tyre. However, it isn’t just as easy as putting some lines on the tyre wherever you want, which is why there are so many different kinds of tyres for different situations.

Different Kinds Of Tread

Different kinds of conditions will require different types of tyres to keep you safe. For example, tyres made for the snow will be less inflated than normal tyres, making it easier to drive on the snowy ground but harder on normal ground. Winter tyres are made of a softer kind of rubber so they can stay flexible in cold weather but in warm weather, they will wear down a lot quicker and won’t be as efficient. As you can see, having tyres for the right weather is very important.

There are also different kinds of tread designs such as symmetrical, asymmetrical and directional. Symmetrical tyres are your average kind of tyre that you would find on most cars, they aren’t specifically made for one thing in particular, just for general driving. They are not great in tough weather conditions but will generally get the job done. Asymmetrical tyres are a hybrid, the outside of them is designed to help you turn corners and the inside is designed to help shift the water, improving safety in wet weather. Directional tyres are the best of the three for harsh weather conditions like snow and rain as the design of them means they can channel away the water making it safer on the road.

Wheel alignment is an important part of car maintenance. However, it may be something people forget or even don’t know about. This post should help you learn a bit more about it and the benefits that come with getting it done.

What is Wheel Alignment?

Wheel alignment is the angle and direction in which your tyres are set. Your wheels need to be positioned inline with what your manufacturer’s specification recommends.

When Do I Need Wheel Alignment & How Will I Know?

Hitting kerbs or going over potholes at high speed can result in damage to your wheels and could lead to needing your wheels aligned.

When driving make sure you look out for the following signs that your tyres may be misaligned:

Difficulty steering

Dragging or pulling to one side

Uneven tyre wear

Steering wheel vibration

Squealing noises at low speeds

What Are The Benefits?

These are the 5 key benefits associated with wheel alignment:

Longer Tyre Lifespan

When your wheels are aligned properly, they work in harmony. They will all be used equally and evenly so when one has been worn down and in need of replacement, usually they all will. However, when your wheels are not aligned properly certain tyres may be used more than the others, therefore, shortening the lifespan. Tyres are not cheap so the longer you can keep them for the better.

Increased Fuel Efficiency

Since your wheels aren’t working together when your wheels are not aligned, it makes your vehicle work much harder when you move. This means that when you drive, your car is working twice as hard to move you forward and in turn resulting in poor fuel efficiency.

Smoother Driving

When driving with misaligned wheels, you may notice that even though you have your steering wheel positioned straight, it may want to steer off to the right or left-hand side of the road. This results in having to constantly adjust the steering wheel due to bad alignment on the road, which can not only be annoying but dangerous too.

Enhanced Safety

Generally keeping your vehicle in good shape will improve the safety of your car and ensuring that your wheels are aligned properly is just one of the many things which can ensure safety in your vehicle.

Reduce Repair Expenses

Driving with unaligned wheels will cause the parts in your car to wear unevenly and prematurely. Every time you hit the kerb or drive over a pothole, your driving and suspension will wear down slightly, When your tyres aren’t evenly distributing this impact, certain areas of your car will take the hit worse than others, meaning they will break down earlier than they should. Ensuring your tyres are aligned could save you paying for some expensive auto repair services.

Checking that your tyres are of legal tread depth is one of the most important checks you should do for your car. This is so important because if the rubber on the tyre wears down too much, you can lose traction, this will prevent you from effectively braking. As well as putting your life and others on the road at risk, you are also breaking the law. If your tread depth is below 1.6mm it is against the law and you need to get your tyres changed imminently.

What Is The Recommended Tread Depth?

Although the legal requirement for your tread depth is 1.6mm, experts recommend getting them changed before they reach this point.

The UK organisation MIRA conducted a test and concluded that once the tread is below 3mm the stopping distance increases significantly. They tested cars at 3mm and cars at 1.6mm in wet weather, the braking distance was as much as 44% further in the 1.6mm cars, which can be incredibly dangerous.

How To Check Your Tyres?

If you don’t have a tool that is specifically for measuring the tread depth, you can simply use a 20p coin.

To measure your tread, simply take a 20p coin and insert it into the grooves on the tyre, if the outer band of the 20p coin is not showing after you insert it, then your tyres are within the legal limit. If the outer band is still visible then they are below the legal limit.

This test is advised to be done every two weeks or before any long journeys.

What Will Happen If My Tyres Are Below 1.6mm?

Legally, if your tyre is below this limit and you are stopped by the police, they are allowed to fine you up to £2,500 per tyre as well as giving you up to 3 points on your licence.

Your tread is there to allow water to pass by the tyre without hydroplaning. Hydroplaning is when your tyres lose contact with the road surface and travel on top of the surface of the water. This can be very dangerous, as without that contact, you will not be able to steer, brake or accelerate effectively, ultimately causing you to temporarily lose control of the car which can lead to fatal accidents.

The short answer is, winter tyres are not mandatory in the UK. The main reason is that most of the UK rarely goes through extreme periods of cold that would warrant the need to make winter tyres compulsory. However, fitting them during the colder months is highly recommended.

Other European countries, such as Estonia and Finland have made winter tyres mandatory during certain periods of the year, whilst others, such as the Czech Republic and Portugal accept chains as a substitute where instructed. In the UK snow chains are also permitted however there aren’t any laws in place that dictate you are required to carry them around with you.

So, you may be asking yourself, if neither winter tyres nor snow chains are required by law in the UK why should you even consider them?

Why Should I Change To Winter Tyres?

Two words, road safety. Winter tyres are designed to provide superior traction, grip and braking performance during bad weather conditions. There are many differences between summer and winter tyres, however, the most significant one is the deeper tread grooves. They help to more effectively displace water and to gather as much snow inside as possible since nothing grips better than snow itself.

In our opinion, this leads to one conclusion. Although extreme weather doesn’t characterise the UK, we definitely get plenty of rain and snow to justify the need for winter tyres, especially in certain regions.

If you do believe you could benefit from changing your summer tyres to winter tyres, there are a couple of things that you need to be aware of.

What Are The Requirements To Fit Winter Tyres?

Winter tyres are legal in the UK which means that the only legal requirement that you need to concern yourself with is ensuring that they have more than 2mm of tread. However, you do need to check if your insurance provider requires prior notification of the change. This is because should you have an accident and it is found that you had winter tyres fitted without informing your insurance provider first, some can render your cover invalid.
