Crombie - Timeless Elegance

One thing that I always stress when it comes to menswear is traditional elements mixed with modern aesthetic and Crombie is a brand that exemplifies just that. Crombie started in 1805 by John Crombie, son to a family of Scottish weavers. John established his first woollen mill at Cothal Mills in Aberdeen, Scotland and quickly established a reputation throughout Britain for the quality of his luxury cloth. By the mid-nineteenth century, the Crombie business had established its reputation amongst the fashionable drapers of London and Paris.

Crombie's fine wools, tweeds, cashmeres and merinos became the fabric of choice for Savile Row tailors and gentlemen of taste. During the First and Second World War, Crombie temporarily switched its production to military officers' uniforms for the British Army without compromising one important aspect, exceptional quality. With its war work over, Crombie reassumes its position as a purveyor of fine British fashion to celebrities royalty, and statesmen worldwide. Crombie wearers include such iconic figures such as Cary Grant, The Beatles, John F. Kennedy, Jack Nickelson, Mick Jagger, and Elton John just to name a few. Crombie has found a way to be a Iconic brand for over 200 years by developing top of the line quality as well as adapting to customer demands.

Below is my favorite coat from Crombie’s iconic outerwear collection!

British Army Green Authentic Great Coat

As you may or may not already know I am a huge fan of big pronounced collars on my wool over coats and this army green number has just the right size. I love the slim silhouette throughout the jacket as well as the bold gold buttons. I also am a big fan of its military inspired roots. The great thing about army green is it can be paired with a numerous amount of colors and outfits. Formally I would pair this coat with a slim grey window pane suit to add some depth, a tailored white pique dress shirt, a hunter green varsity printed tie with yellow stripes, and a two tone beige and brown leather wingtip boot. In a casual setting I would pair this coat with a chambray shirt buttoned all the way to the top, slim brown chinos with a slight cuff, and a dark brown distressed military boot tied all the way up to the top.

Seanol Canada Review

Just a couple of weeks ago I was sent a few products from this new men's grooming line called Seanol. Seanol is originally from Korea and is becoming known for their men's skin and hair remedies. This past May, the two young & trend-savvy female entrepreneurs behind Seanol introduced a new Korean brown algae skincare secret to Canada.

Seanol is luxurious, anti-oxidizing, direct from South Korea, and made of Ecklonia Cava. Ecklonia Cava is a sea polyphenol extracted from brown algae that grows exclusively off Jeju Island, one of the worlds 7 Wonders of Nature. Seanol Canada's brown algae has been proven to promote cell-generation, in turn, clearing and softening skin, promoting hair growth and thickness, and many other benefits.

Here's what I though of Seanol products.

Procava Shampoo and Conditioner:

At first I wasn't too keen on putting brown algae in my hair but after using it multiple times, I began to see results. My hair felt thicker and healthier and I would definitely recommend this product to people who have thin hair since it really helps to thickening up each hair. Another great benefit is that the bottle is quite small (under 100ml) and is perfect for people who travel a lot since it saves space and is airport friendly!

Procava Scalp Tonic

What a lot of people think when they buy hair growth products is that their hair is going to grow back immediately; sadly this is not the case. These types of products are not magical, they simply create the environment needed to promote hair growth. That is exactly what the Procava Scalp Tonic does! It's quick and easy to use: just a couple sprays when you jump out of the shower and a slight rub into the scalp and you're done. Seanol definitely had the typical time savvy gentleman in mind when creating this!

Seanol Toothpaste

I have to admit this was my least favorite of the bunch. This flouride-free, paraben-free and preservative-free toothpaste effectively controls bacterial growth in the mouth and on toothbrushes. It's also supposed to maintain healthy gums but personally I felt as if this product tasted like nothing. Once I would finish brushing my teeth I wouldn't get that minty satisfaction I get from other toothpaste brands and for that reason I wasn't a fan.

The Creme Cava

I hate having dry flaky skin but I was never really able to find a skin care product that worked with my specific skin type. The majority of the products I tried were always either too greasy when applied or smelt really sweet and feminine. What I love about The Creme Cava is that your skin gets the right amount of moisture without feeling slick and slimy. Also, it has a very pleasant but muted scent.

HP and Windows 8 NYC Launch Party

Last week I was privileged enough to attend a really cool event in New York City called ARTIST#TALK. The event was a live interview series with musicians of all different genres, developed by Arjan a music blogger from Arjanwrites.com, HP, and Microsoft. It was a really interesting segment which spotlights the careers and creative process of an artist though conversation and music in a very intimate setting. ARTIST #TALK is unlike most talk shows as it focuses in on the one thing that matters most, music.

The segment that I attended though was a little bit different than the normal version of ARTIST #TALK. This episode not only featured musical group The Far East Movement, but was part of a bigger HP initiative to mark the release of Windows 8 and to showcase some of their new products that include Beats by Dre audio technology. Throughout the iconic Terminal 5 complex was interactive games, an unforgettable show by two aerial acrobats, as well as a high-energy private show by the Far East Movement that included fan favourites, new songs and the very first live performance of “Little Bird” from their new album “Dirty Bass”.

During the ARTIST#TALK portion of the night, Far East Movement talked extensively about their humble beginnings as a band, growing up in downtown Los Angeles, interning with universal music, as well as their musical and fashion inspirations, quite notably, The Beastie Boys.

Overall it was a great experience and I would like to thank HP and Microsoft for inviting me to the event, Far East Movement for putting on an amazing show, and Toronto is Fashion for giving me the opportunity to attend!

One of the most common questions men ask me is how they can develop their own style. My answer is always to start from the basics and then invest in pieces that show your unique personal flare. I find the biggest problem men have when beginning to build their wardrobe is that they are missing the key basics or they’re not sure what makes a good basic. To help out with this common dilemma, I’ve created The Essentials List: Mr. Cavaliere’s Guide to Menswear! It’s designed to ensure every man has what they need in their wardrobe to make sure they’re always looking dapper, no matter the occasion. Today, we start with Part 1: Shirts!

When looking for any of the essentials on this list, keep in mind two key rules: buy quality and invest in basic colors. Well-made clothing not only looks better on, but it also lasts longer and ultimately will save you money. Also, when buying wardrobe essentials try to stick to colors like navy, grey, brown and black because they are the easiest to mix together and will compliment any of the bolder or trendier pieces you might buy in the future! If bought correctly, these basics will offer years of wearability and will be well worth your time and money. Think of these pieces as investments that will change your overall appearance, and ultimately, your quality of life.

So without further ado, here is The Essentials List: Mr. Cavaliere’s Guide to Menswear!

Part 1: Shirts

The White Tapered Formal Shirt

There’s nothing more versatile that a white dress shirt. Its classic and acts as a blank canvas, just waiting for you to make your personal mark on it. I recommend one with a 98% cotton 2% spandex blend for a little bit of extra stretch. Also, look for a semi spread collar for versatility, and a tapered fit no matter your frame.

The Denim Shirt

Denim shirts, or chambray shirts as they are sometimes called, are my go to piece when I want to look casual and rugged without putting too much thought into my outfit. The denim shirt began as the uniform for those men who worked in the trades and, because of its utilitarian history, it’s one of the most masculine pieces you can have in your wardrobe. I recommend you look for one with at least one breast pocket. This adds visual interest to your look and also adds functionality.

Another perk of this piece is its versatility. It can be dressed casually with a pair of chinos or dark denim as well as formally with a cotton or tweed suit. I personally like a lighter wash for my denim shirts because it looks better with my skin complexion but don't let this stop you from trying out some of the great dark wash western style shirts out there!

The Neutral V-Neck

T-shirts are probably one of the easiest items for guys to wear, but before I get into talking about them, let’s remember that these aren't your traditional boxy crew necks. Most guys probably already have a v-neck or a scoop neck t-shirt but there's one common mistake I see daily: the fit of these pieces. Your t-shirts should never be so loose that you look like you’re wearing a window curtain, or so tight that people can see your rib cage! A healthy medium between these two is the ideal t-shirt fit. Something that is not too tight but tapered enough that your shirt provides you with a slim silhouette.

The other great thing about a v-neck or a scoop neck is that it gives the illusion that your body is much more Adonis-like. The low neck line shows off your collarbone which makes you look more chiseled and covers any imperfections throughout the torso. This is something that your old crew neck just can’t do!

The Vintage Picture Tee

I love vintage picture t-shirts! I have always been a big fan of vintage black and white photos so putting them on t-shirts just makes sense. When buying any sort of graphic tee I recommend a white base because of its versatility in your wardrobe as well as the fact that any image will sit nicely on it. There are so many ways to wear this type of t-shirt and depending on your personality and style the look will vary. I personally love wearing this piece with a cardigan, driving cap, and jeans for a casual day look but would also wear it with a blazer, a colored chino, a pocket square, and black wingtips for a great night look.

The Neutral Henley

Some guys have no idea what a henley is, so here is my definition: a crew neck shirt that can either have long or short sleeves and often has buttons coming down the front. Now that we all understand what this word means lets learn how to wear it!

Although a henley can be worn in a variety of different ways and comes in a ton of different colors and styles, the one everyman needs to have in his wardrobe is a neutral grey one. Also, look for a longed sleeved one that’s slim enough to wear on its own but has enough room to throw a collared shirt under. A henley in a finer fabric is great for pairing with a suit or, for something less formal, a pair of jeans.

The Polo Shirt

Having a great polo shirt is essential for every man! Whether it’s for golf or for leisure, it’s the perfect piece to look preppy and put together without having to wear a dress shirt. We North Americans hold sportswear quite dear to our hearts and the polo really embodies that idea. With this in mind though, it’s important to differentiate between fashion polos and polos you actually wear for playing sports. Fashion polos are usually made out of cotton and have quite the tapered fit to the body with higher arm holes and a shorter length. Polos for sports are usually made of Spandex or elastane, are cut bigger for comfort and are longer in length so they can be tucked in.

I’m also a big fan of tipped polos. A tipped polo has two stripes of color on the collar and arm holes of the garment.

The Contrast Collared Shirt

The contrast collar shirt, or a pinstripe shirt, should be thought of as your "ready to do business shirts". They’re as formal as you can get and they’ve been crafted for your 9-5 office job. If you want to look like the type of guy that deals with big transactions on a daily basis, then this is the shirt for you! If you’re working in a corporate setting, I highly recommend having both of these shirts in multiple colors.

Most of the white collared professionals here in North America don’t invest enough time and effort into the fit of their attire and end up looking over sized and sloppy. A wise man once told me this: "If you want to make a million, you have to look like you’re worth the money.” The easiest way to fix this issue is to buy clothing that is tapered to the body. Look for shirts with: higher arm holes to eliminate excess fabric on the arms, darts in the back that taper to the torso, a smaller collar as this usually means the shirt will have a slimmer body, and make sure your shoulder seams are on your shoulder NOT on your arm.

So the question now is, are you ready to look like a million bucks?

The Check Shirt

Plaid shirts in my opinion get a bad rap, but if chosen properly, they can be one of your best essentials. When people think of a plaid shirt they’re usually thinking of a thick, flannel, lumber jack type shirt. The plaid shirting I’m talking about has a small check, is slim, fine in fabric, interfaced, and transitional. This type of shirts has the same fitting rules as formal dress shirts but is more adaptable in your closet. Plaid and check shirting can be worn with a suit and a tie for a casual office look as well as with a pair of chinos and casual shoes for when you’re out of the office. The key here is to keep these shirts tucked in no matter the occasion since untucking them looks sloppy. Another key point for both formal shirting and casual shirting is collar interfacing. No matter what the look, make sure your collar has a canvas lining which will keep it stiff and overall make you look put together.

Another collar style that I love is button downs. They add a visual interest to your look as well as keep your collar close to your neck. For more information on what you should get rid of, check out my "What Not To Wear" post here.

The Perfect Nautical Blazer

Ever since I was young, I've always had a fascination with everything about the sea. As I got older it slowly became less about the existence of the Loch Ness Monster and more about how people dressed for a life at sea and the nautical trends and looks that they've inspired. One of my favorite nautical inspirations has to be the anchor! The nautical anchor has a very unique shape and is really a logo for all things related to sea living.

I always make it a point of looking to history when it comes to styling and picturing how an item was meant to be worn without compromising on my personal flare. When I first bought this blazer, I got a nostalgic feeling of fabulously dressed people on a yacht traveling on crystal blue waters in the south of France. With this in mind, I created the look below:

TIP: In my last post I talked about unconstructed suiting and its advantages and disadvantages. This blazer is also unconstructed and to check out more on this type of look click here!

TIP: I am not a big fan of solid ties, but this navy slim knitted version is an exception. Knit ties have a texture and a look that a solid silk tie just can't offer. This type of tie is appropriate for both summer time and a more casual look because of its light weight and ease of wear.

The Unconstructed Glen Check Blazer

One of the most popular trends seen the past couple of seasons has been relaxed tailoring and unconstructed suiting. Unconstructed suiting has no lining, no harsh interfacing, no shoulder padding, and is usually made of cottons and linens because of its casual nature. In fact, unconstructed suiting is actually more difficult to construct than regular suiting because of the jacket's exposed lining and visible imperfections.

This type of suiting is perfect for more casual occasions and, since it's lighter weight, it will keep you cooler on those warmer days. To give you an idea of what an unconstructed blazer looks like, I put together an outfit with my glen check version!

TIP: I am always talking about how much of my inspiration comes from traditional and classic gentlemen like my grandfather. In the photo above, I have on a club collared shirt and a rounded lapel that my grandfather would definitely approve of. Yes the fit is very different than what he was used to, but it's about using even the smallest classic details to make a wonderful modern look!

TIP: When wearing in a handkerchief don't put too much emphasis on how it sits in the pocket. When you fix your handkerchief to be too perfect, it ends up looking stiff and over done. Throw in it your pocket and forget about it!

TIP: Wearing an unconstructed blazer feels a lot like wearing a casual sweater. Think of it this way when deciding what to pair with it and don't be afraid to dress it down! My shirt and tie could have easily been swapped for a t-shirt and this still would have been an awesome look. Click here for a casual look on my good friend Joseph Lancione!

How a Poker Player Dresses Impacts How they Are Perceived

I'm sure that some of you out there follow poker in some fashion whether you watch it on TV or actually play. Successful poker players know the importance of setting up a strong table image and using your overall table image as an advantage. However, did you know that what you wear at the poker table can affect how players perceive you? Let's take a quick look at a few examples.

Look at the image above. If you saw this guy sit down at the table, what would you think about him. You might think he was somewhat of a conservative, especially if this person was a bit older. Odds are that this guy will not make too many big bluffs and play a somewhat solid style of cards. Not someone you will be too worried about.

How about this guy? This guy is dressing to show off his own style and projects a "devil may care" type of attitude. He gives off the vibe that he may be a bit of a wild card and will play just about anything. Chances are that your read would be spot on and that this guy will indeed be involved in a lot of hands and will play just about any two cards dealt to him. As long as he isn't one of these young guys with a chip on their shoulder or bad attitude, they should be a lot of fun to play with.

If you saw this guy sit down, some of you may lean towards him being a bit like the loose player. However, at closer examination he gives off more of a Steve McQueen type vibe or maybe a modern day Fonzie. This guys is cool and looks like he has his stuff together. Chances are that this guy will be among your most difficult opponents at the table and he will be able to adjust to any of the players he faces.

By and large, you will notice that poker players' behavior and playing style will match the clothes they wear. However, there is one category where this does not always apply.

Yes ladies, we are calling you out but in a good way. The ladies have learned over the years how to manipulate people, including how they dress. What a lady wears to the table will not often indicate how they play as they may dress how they do for a myriad of reasons. Unlike guys, they have more on their minds than just being comfortable. The lady in this picture looks like she could be a wild woman, but actually may be the biggest poker shark at the table. Often, you cannot go by how a lady dresses to determine how they play.

As you can see from above, what you wear to the poker table can affect how players perceive you. Knowing this, you can actually use this to your advantage and maybe experiment with your wardrobe to try and fool players into thinking your style of play is something other than what it is perceived.

Denim & Royal Blue Chinos

Last week I briefly talked about colored trousers becoming one of the hottest menswear trends and showed you how to wear a red pant easily and casually. This week I decided to put together a look with another great colored trouser: royal blue!

If you don't already know, blue has to be one of my favorite colors to wear. No matter the shade, blue always works in a monochromatic look and the color itself is quite masculine.

TIP: Beat up your denim! The great thing about denim is that it's a strong fabric that can withstand a lot of wear and tear. The more you wear it, the better it feels on your body and the more it takes on your shape. In my opinion, creases and fades give denim character and individuality, which always works with such a classic piece!

TIP: Accessories are those little things that make a man's look unique. The key to finding accessories that work with your style is to just try them out. For example, I'm not a big bracelet wearer but I love vintage sunglasses and necklaces!

TIP: Invest in blue loafers! If you've read some of my past posts, you should be quite familiar with my suede blue deck loafers. When I first bought them I thought of them as a shoe that would only work with casual wear. As I've tried them out with different looks, they've become my favorite shoe because of their versatility. I love them so much that I bought the blue snake skin pair above!

Be Bold - Red Chinos

One of the biggest trends in menswear over the last two seasons has been colored pants! It’s been all over the runways of Paris, Milan, London and New York, and it’s been featured on billboards by all the major retailers and designers! This trend has to be one of my personal favorites of all time and I can see myself incorporating colored trousers into my look often. This trend has really forced men to push the comfort zone of their style, but a lot of the guys I talk to are still quite hesitant to adapt a colored pant into their wardrobe. A lot of the time, men are hesitant to try out new trends because they may be unsure how to wear them or they think they’ll look like a fool if they wear a particular trend the wrong way. For these reasons I’ve put together a casual look featuring one of the best trouser colors available: red!

TIP: I am a big fan of tipped polo shirts! A tipped polo is a golf shirt with a contrasting color or a pattern on the collar and sleeves of the shirt. They’re easy to wear and also look great paired with colored trousers!

TIP: I love wearing my shoes sockless in the summer, but when those shoes come off, my feet are usually sweaty and stinky. I’ve tried powders to try and fix the problem but nothing really worked until I found these no-show socks! They provide a thin layer to keep your foot from directly touching the leather sole as well as absorb moisture like a normal sock! Pick a pair up and you won’t regret it!

TIP: When wearing a very bold piece such as a colored trouser always keep the pieces you pair with it very neutral. If you want to add another color, use it as an accent so it doesn’t compete with the bold color of your trousers.

The Chambray Shirt

Chambray shirting has to be one of the most versatile and masculine pieces that a man can have in his wardrobe. Chambray has been around for quite a while but its original purpose was similar to denim as a work-wear item. As time progressed, chambray became the lighter weight alternative to denim and for this reason became more and more popular among wearers.

This work wear staple is a piece that can literally be paired with anything and is my go-to when I don't have a lot of time to get ready. In the photos below I decided to incorporate my blue chambray shirt in a very easy casual summer look.

TIP: I'm a big fan of long sleeve button up shirts and I probably only own 2 short sleeve shirts altogether! When your look is casual don't be afraid to roll your sleeves up; not too high, not too long, just to the elbow is usually perfect!

TIP: It is summertime so don't be afraid to lose the socks and roll the cuffs of your pants! A rolled cuff will make you look taller and leaner, and will let your footwear shine!

TIP: A good pair of sunglasses is a must for the summer, since your eyes need protection from harmful UV rays! Find something that works with the shape of your face, or, try a pair with a slightly circular frame since that will help elongate your face.

Last Friday was a very exciting day for me! I was invited to The Morning Show on Global to talk about winning the tittle of Canada's Sharpest Man, where my style inspiration comes from, and a small feature on my blog; Mr. Cavaliere. Grafic approached me last month with an opportunity to collaborate with them and offer my perspective on style. With my menswear expertise and the amazing product Grafic has to offer, I knew our collaboration would be beneficial for the both us!

With that being said, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday I will be giving my advice on typical male style dilemmas, style inspiration through street style shots and photos of fashion icons, as well as using my own style for some added inspiration!

As you may or may not know, I have tried out to be Canada’s Sharpest Man! Strellson Fall/Winter 2012 Preview

Hey guys,

Just last week I was privileged enough to attend the Strellson Fall/Winter 2012 preview at The Bay. Before I go into the collection let me give you a brief synopsis of the history of Strellson.

Strellson is based in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland and it’s the largest menswear manufacturer in Switzerland. Strellson was founded by fashion entrepreneurs Uwe and Jochen Holy which rebranded the coat manufacturer Friedrich Straehl & Co. that they acquired in 1984. It is owned by the Holy Fashion Group and produces mid-range products aimed at the innovative new generation of men. Strellson's goal is to give the customer a modern, high quality product that is both functional and fashionable. Strellson carries two separate lines, their Premium line and their Sportswear line.

Below are some of my favorite looks from Strellson Premium collection!

Premium - "Deep Surface"

What I love about this brand is how they focus in on traditional fabrics and make more masculine menswear with a modern fit. Unlike other brands they focus solely on menswear which allows for their designers to focus on one thing: the modern male. As one can see with the images above, all of their pieces are slender. For example, a more modern version of the double breasted blazer, slim and cuffed pants, and, most interesting in my opinion, their revival of the single pleated pant as opposed to the flat front. Other interesting details include contrast stitching and piping, open edge finishing, and pockets for smartphones to enhance functionality.

My personal favorite of all the looks has to be the last one. I love how slim the blazer is in the torso as well as the length of the jacket. I'm also quite fond of the peak lapel on the jacket as well as narrow width. Last but not least, I love the monochromatic color story of the look with the subtle brown shadow plaid and the fine gauge cinnamon turtleneck.

Strellson X Bianchi

Strellson has also partnered with bicycle manufacturer Bianchi, for their ‘Rolling Style – White Edition’ collection. The clothing and accessories for the line was developed with fashion and functionality in mind. The bi-stretch suits are breathable and repel both water and dirt, feature reflective strips under the collar and on pockets for riding at night, and also have security zippers to keep mobile phones and other valuables secured. The collection includes 3 suits, a biking shirt, a helmet, shoes, socks, and a bag all innovatively designed for biking.
